Hi there.
You have not specified which model G3 you have but either way the best custom ROM 5.1.1 (based on CM 12.1) at the moment is BlissPop and you can have more info here http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/development/rom-blisspop-v2-0-ls990-t3022685
It is a an extremely stable ROM, with lots of Official releases for all G3 models, it comes supplied with LOADS of options to customize your phone the way you want it and it has many dedicated people helping others for support, including myself.
As far as options to custom it surely has lots more than stock ROMS. It is much fluid and smooth. And this goes for any AOSP ROM compared to plain stock.
As far as battery goes surely depends on usage but you can get with a few extra tweaks around 5 hours SOT and up to 2 days with little use.
Your phone will not be worth more in the market shall you want to resell it but you can always go back to stock anytime.
Rooting and flashing custom ROMS is way better than stock and more fun. There are risks involved but if you are careful and take the time to understand and read and learn first BEFORE doing something wrong you will be fine.
Hope this helps you.
*I rooted my phone the same day I bought it 6 months ago and been having lots of fun with it. Just take your time to read things and don't jump too quick into things and you will be fine.
Hope this helps and if I did please press the thanks button.

Why install ROM over just Rooting ?

Please help explain to my Brother who just got a GSM Nexus from the Play/Market store, what benefits there are to installing a good stable ROM over just Rooting the phone ? My bro is super smart, he's a programmer, and knows a ton about technology, etc..He just mentioned he's happy Rooted and that's it.
I have the Verizon Nexus, and rooted and ROM'd the first day I bought it, and love trying out different ROM's. But what is a good reason to install a nice ROM, instead of just using the stock Nexus that is Rooted ? How would you explain that to someone new to this phone ? And why do it ?
because when you root your phone, it does a lot of alterations and depending on what you do with root access (such as... put something in /system/ etc etc) there are a lot of variables. This may affect future OTAs, and if you do accept them and you did those altercations then your phone will not brick but there will be problems booting up/applying it etc etc.
So in the end, you might as well take things into your own hand and flash. If you're going to root, do it the WHOLE way. Not go half in, and half out. That's just my opinion.
And sigh, another thread about what ROM to choose from. Look at the dev section and look at all the ROMs and depending on the comments + features (OP post) have to offer. Select your choice there. The most popular combo is AOKP with Franco Kernel.
And if someone is new, I'd leave their phone stock. Otherwise, you'll be holding their hands and asking you questions on how to do things. A rooted phone is that person's responsibility.

Are you trying to insist your brother flash? Maybe he is quite content with stock and knows it is stable and root just gives the extra privileges he wants. I am running stock and almost pure kernel rooted and very happy.
let it be.

If he doesn't see the need for it, then he shouldn't put a ROM on the phone. Don't push him to do it. He's a smart guy, let him make his own decisions. The worst thing you can do is force him to use a custom ROM when he doesn't want to, and have him regret it.

Im too a software developer and a electronics engineer, and i was a stock lover until i tried AOKP Milestone, i would never go back to stock, the feature rich/stabilty/power saving/customization of this rom its just godly.. He wont ever know what are the ICS's real calabilities until he try out whats there.. He can always go back to pure stock.. So i dont see the point on non flashing and testing roms..

He could always stay stock and sit at the "my phone always works" table .
Such a simple question. Because it adds tons of features and functions. You can't really make a judgement saying you're fine stock if you don't know the other side of the question what the other roms offer. Only when you try both can you say yes or no you're happy with or without stock.
My personal opinion, the roms on this phone offer god like amount of features worth using.

Stock Rom Mods

Hey! With all the scares of IMEI loss and all that, I don't feel the need to flash any custom roms. I was wondering if there are any mods for a stock rooted rom that can be applied? to give the feel of a custom rom without actually flashing any?
Good question and smart thinking. I have been extremely cautious with how I go about flashing things on this AMAZING device. So far I have flashed nothing! I can't find a single flaw that would make me want to flash a custom rom and risk losing funtionality. I have owned many smartphones and this is the first one that had me content with STOCK. We know that flashing enhances functionality when hard working devs come up with custom roms, kernels and mods, but come on?, how many devices have left you content with stock until more is learned about the device?
Not sure if you could get Google wallet by modding a stock rom. Tethering is possible
Sent from my GS3
Yes Google wallet can be had on the stock Rom with just root and a build prop edit, then install the modded Apk it's a sticky somewhere in these forums. And just installing a new launcher can allow you to change the look of a lot of the phone.. I for one flashed a bunch and still have my imei but maybe I'm just lucky.

I flashed AOPK and couldnt be without my full working camera and phone. Functionality and especially the camera is important to me. I rooted mine though and installed the cwm recovery and flashed faux123 kernel. I love it. This is the first android phone I own and havent gone flash crazy with it.

the reason I have rooted all my other phones has mainly been to get the tether feature working, but FoxFi worked on my Note and is working on my S3...LauncherPro got rid of the TouchWiz, FoxFi took care of the tethering, not much left that it can't do stock...
I have been watching the threads and have nearly pulled the trigger a couple times, but I just can't think of any reason that I absolutely HAVE to root this one...
Besides.... supposedly we can expect a Jellybean update in the next month or two, if rumor's are correct.

I was absolutely shocked when the rumors turned out to be true about the Note getting the ICS update as early as it did...I was expecting ATT to drag that out for months or not release it at all...maybe since Samsung has gotten to be such a powerhouse and Apple is losing ground almost daily, we might finally start seeing some love....

Here's some tips...
- don't start flashing and modding until you have read....read...and re-read. If you follow instructions and cross reference, things will be fun. If you skip details and take foolish risks...you may end up getting a soft/hard brick or just getting jammed up. Take your time, read, absorb...and GO SLOW.
- don't just flash because you can....unless you can afford to throw away TIME and/or MONEY. My stock rom runs near perfect. Battery drain, speed, multitasking yadda yadda...is the best I have ever experienced and I DO COMPARE my stats with those on so called BETTER ROMS. Custom tweaked roms can be very rewarding...but I can see that a huge amount of users are having many uses such as Hot Reboots, unreliability, battery drains etc. Start off with things like replacing your Touch Wiz home screen with something like Go Launcher EX. But if your new here, you may not even realize why it IS or why it COULD be better.
- I always decide to test new apps and or mods...for one main reason. Because I am unsatisfied with a feature or operation. In Android world, there are always multiple solutions or options. If it's not here today, it will be next week or next month. Searching is the key. Good Luck!

Is Custom Rom worth it?

I've been running stock for the few months I've had this phone but keep wondering if flashing a custom rom is worth the effort? Is there one that's the best?

Yes it is and no there's not. It's all down to personal preference and only you know what you like best.
It depends on your preference. Ever since safetynet, custom roms have been a nightmare with security issues or being up to date with making it pass.
Also, having a Google device, you'll be giving up running the latest software updates as you would have to wait for when the developer has the time to integrate it.
Android has matured much since it's induction and the use of EZ Root for a one-click root as it now has ways to customize it in a functional matter in ways that you needed a custom rom for.
If you enjoy changing colors or themes and are willing to sacrifice security and some functionality, then you have your answer.
To me honestly, it's no longer worth it. Having to scour the forums every time there's a bug, troubleshooting issues, or for updates takes way too much time that I no longer have. I just want a phone that does eveything I need to simplify my everyday life, not make it complicated. Don't care for red, blue, green status bars or settings app, or having a custom boot animation for a device that never needs a reset. Function over form for me.

I've flashed most all of the popular ones, and while I like most of the features they offer, I have settled on plain ol stock + root with some substratum themes to darken things up. I don't think it's particularly difficult to flash a custom rom now that I've pretty much got the A/B partition thing figured out, but I like to update my device the day a new factory image comes out, then just flash twrp and root again, and I'm up to date in about 20 minutes time with no data loss. But it's like P70shooter said...it's really up to your personal preference, and what your looking for :good:
I haven't flashed any ROMS recently, but it's because of the reasons mentioned before. They don't offer enough benefit over stock + rooted to be worth losing GPay and monthly updates. Root access basically let's you tweak any part of the phone to your liking anyway.
I think ROM developers realize this and it's contributing to a scarcity of quality ROMs anyway.
I've thought about this also. But Stock is so good on this Phone. That just Rooting to use Edge Sense to change squeeze actions and TWRP, black Bootmation. I'm good. Plus installing custom ROMS isnt easy with the A B partion stuff. Stock + Root:good:

P70shooter, are u the maker of the screwd ROM on angler?
AquariOS had been Rock solid for me, and I know @Badger50 would agree. I get his position about the updates process though so your best bet in my opinion is to try one and see what your own opinion is. The squeeze thing is missing from custom roms, so if you dig that you might miss it. I'm still on Feb. Update and might just hang here for the summer unless I get bored. Lol again I would at least try one before you decide...

That's not me I'm afraid. I use to be the maintainer for Candy on angler but now I'm just a tester and thread bouncer for AquariOS.

Not worth it anymore. Haven't unlocked bootloader or did anything since the first pixel release.
I've tried most of the custom roms as well. Most of them have some nice touches that I use. However, the one thing missing for the last several months on all custom roms is verizon wifi calling. You should try them out yourself and decide.
I used to run Gravity Box when I had xposed installed on a previous device, but from what I understand, it's not possible to use xposed and pass safety net....is that still true?

That's right
I've been a big time custom ROM user, flashed them as often as I could on previous phones. Stock+root+xposed does every single thing I need on the p2xl though.
has anyone noticed that display quality seems better on custom roms?
specifically Carbon rom vs Stock for me.
screen looks more bright and clear.
It really depends on your usage. I used to flash custom roms on all of my devices, primarily for themes and debloating. Up until the Nexus 6, it was well worth it. However, with Google's monthly security patches, maintaining a custom ROM is a lot more work. If you use custom themes, expect to have to disable themes every time there are app or rom updates, then reapply. With a busy work schedule, it simply became too much of a hassle and to be honest, stock ROMs have gotten a lot smoother.

hello i am new to all this but first off thanks for all the work you put in here ...you guys are f-ing nasty at what you do..I love it!!:good::good:
So i rooted my phone about a week ago. twrp recovery, magisk, played around flashing roms, been reading, doing research etc. After a week of about 8 hours a day of playing ( i am not working at this time):silly:.... i see i have not even scratched the surface of rooting, etc. Anyway, after researching here and online i have not found a custom rom for my device. I am looking for a lineageOS rom but would be happy with any one that is compatible with my phone. Am i missing something here? I see lots of other roms for other devices and none for mine.. I am Assuming my phone is not that popular and may be the reason? Idk if it is good to say this here on an android forum but i usually use iphones lol... BUT android is def more interesting to me . Now here i am addicted to rooting/androids, flashing, roms etc! So i got this phone sort of just for that and maybe not very popular as i said? Either way still could use a few more hours in the day to play lol. Soooooo my question, Any info for a custom rom that at i can use or anything other info to help as a newbie is greatly appreciated. Thanks again for all the great work, time, and creative thought process you put into all this here, (and wherever else you put all this cool [email protected]# together for us):good:
