Battery drain like that happens rarely, but they're annoying. It happens on clean stock (only factory apps) as well as on custom. Something keep CPU awake and phone won't go into deep sleep for some reason. For first time I thought that battery is simply dying, but since CPU is always awake I suspect device itself.

If it happens after clean flash stock ROM it's an hardware problem so send it to a repair center.

Hey everybody,
Just made the jump from the iPhone 4S and have done the custom ROM/kernel thing the past week. Things were good at the start but I feel them slowly deteriorating.
I find my battery life during sleep has become much worse than before. I mean, it still kills the 4S which would see ~25% overnight. But I'm seeing 10% overnight right now, and was ~2% earlier in the week. I normally have my phone on the charger at night, but didn't last night and I'm kinda glad I got to see this. Makes me realize why I was likely chewing through more in the day too.
You can see what I'm running below in my signature. Last night I had 5 instances where the phone woke on its own. Likely due to emails coming in.
Am I expecting too much from my modifications? Am I doing something wrong? I'm ready to toss AOKP aside because of other issues anyway, but yesterday I also read it was known to have some excessive battery drain as well. Without turning this into a battle to defend the ROM you use (like half the threads in here), if you have other suggestions, feel free to throw in a ROM suggestion. I'll attach some pictures of my battery screen so anyone willing to give me a hand can help.

I had this problem when I was running franco too. Switched to leankernel and never looked back. I get about 4-6% drain overnight as long as I dont do something stupid like leave something running by exiting with home instead of the back button. I also have wifi on 24/7 and gps off unless im nav'in. No BT

I'm hesistant to blame the kernel. I was using franco prior to AOKP without issue. I didn't make that clear in the OP. I went 4.0.4 Stock -> Stock + franco -> AOKP b31 + franco. Things were good the first two steps and I'd like to think the first few days on AOKP.
Perhaps I have some background processes chewing battery - but there's nothing with a higher battery drain than Chrome beta with 2%. My phone idle and Cell standby had huge drain though. Could a weaker than normal signal cause this? Could my radio be the culprit?
Steps to best diagnose idle battery drain.
-Install CPU Spy and Better Battery Stats.
-Charge phone to full and let it run for several hours undisturbed (easiest to charge before bed, then unplug it when you know it won't be used till morning).
-Take quick note of your % loss per hour. Around 1%, you're golden. 1-2 is pretty normal. >3 and you've got issues.
-Launch CPU Spy. Most of the time should be deep sleep (we're talking about 95%). If your phone has been awake a lot, there's either an app that refuses to let your phone rest, or an OS/Kernel issue. If it's not extreme but noticeable, you likely just need to reign in settings on some apps to keep them from syncing so often or working in the background.
-Launch Better Battery Stats. Select Partial Wakelocks from the menu. These are all cases of apps waking the phone up, sorted by length. Go look at problem apps' settings/consider uninstalling if you don't need them. Kernel wakelocks should be low too.
Keep in mind that the goal here isn't really to get all these things to zero so do not obsess over small showings. Facebook with push notifications but updates set to never keeps my phone awake for about a minute or two every night, for instance. So does Handcent SMS. If you flash a rom and your phone needs to do a lot of syncing it's likely to show up in this kind of test as well. But for a night with nothing going on, nothing should be keeping your phone up for more than a few minutes total.

Weaker than normal signal can kill a phone battery, when I'm in lecture out in the bumfuck nowhere school I go to, I get -100 to -120dbm, which kills my battery while i'm at school. If thats your situation not much to do besides hope radios may increase your signal, but if not then your basicly as SOL as i am and may have to just charge it

This is what every user should use to diagnose battery problems at first.
Tried CM9 RC2 and Full Throttle 7.1, the same thing happened:
I unplug my phone in the morning after browsing for a few things, then left the phone basically idle for a few hours. Then use it for a few minutes of different activities. For the first few hours the phone goes into deep sleep, after I use it for a few minutes the phone will refuse to go into sleep again, awake until I restart it.
I have been using CPU Sleeper to force the phone into sleep, doesn't really help at all.
Any clue?
Install Better Battery Stats to help determine if an application is keeping your phone in wakelock.

not yet, seems behaving as expected after installing the app. Still deciding between CM9 RC2 and Full Throttle 7.1, so may need a couple more trials to point things out.
hi friends, my HOX acts funny sometimes. in idle mode the battery drops by 30-40% and when i check the power consumption, android os is the main culprit, consuming 30-40% and sometimes up to 70%. Also when this happens the phone gets warm...i haven't rooted the phone. however after reboot the issue seems to resolve. this happens once a week. other wise the battery is performing good... i have watchdog lite but there aren't any rogue apps as such that it can detect...
any inputs would be appreciated...

Its difficult to say what the exact problem is as 'Android OS' could be many things.
I don't know Watchdog Lite, but you might want to try Better battery Stats, it has many options and ways to find rogue and batteryg hungry apps. Perhaps this wil help you solve your problem.
It sure helped me solve some battery drain problems.
Otherwise, try disabling as many automatic syncs and try uninstalling/disabling apps one by one, you might find the culprit that way.
If nothing else helps a reset to factory defaults and restoring all apps and setting one by one after that migth help, but seeing your not rooted that might be a big pain in the ***.
Oh, and make sure all your apps and your phonesoftware are up to date
im on a stock rom not rooted and new battery and old battery both discharge really fast. Totally dead in 5-6hrs light use. Im guessing there is a hardware issue with the phone as this isnt normal. Any ideas?
lets see I did a factory reset after Jellybean update
changed the battery for a new one
biggest power drain is showing up as screen 33-39%
I have the thing on power saving mode and mobile data I turn off when not in use.
only thing I can think of that I didnt try is flashing another radio. But I doubt thats it because ive put it in airplane mode and it still looses power fast.

Get Better Battery Stats and check your wake locks. A lot of information in that thread. Might have a rogue app draining you.
Edit: also screen on is always going to be your biggest drain. Keep brightness down as much as you can. App called screen filter is good for achieving lower brightness than system allows. You could try the ktoonsz kernel, undervolted as well. Turning off sounds in settings (key press, vibrate, etc as well). Toggle data and WiFi when not using. These are just some basic suggestions.

This is my second s3 and the first one never had a problem going 10-12 hrs normal use. Im thinking it is a hardware issue as I did a factory reset and it still persists on fast draining.
Edit.. I just disable google talk maybe that was causing it?
It's not Google Talk. Check your battery and it'll show you what's drainage ng it the most. Also check screen brightness

well after the screen 40% we have android OS @ lower 30%
Do you have an SD-Card in?
I was getting the same battery life, took out my SD-Card, and I'm getting 7 hours on screen time with stock battery.

lol sd card?? well I tried it anyway and no, it still drains like a pissing racehorse. Ive noticed this phone gets pretty warm sometimes even with light use. Im not sure what is causing this but must be a factor in why the battery life is so poor. When I talk on phone, not very often, the ear piece actually gets hot. Im gonna send this puppy to samsung and see what they can do.
GSam Battery Monitor can offer better details about your battery usage, including wakelocks, cpu usage, etc.. It's more detailed than what Android offers.
I'd also recommend using an AOSP based rom as they include out any carrier/Samsung services that may adversely affect your battery life, particularly in a fringe coverage area or with many sync and push items. I'd also stay away from powersave mode for the time being.
If you want to know for sure, I'd do something like this:
- update PRL on current rom
- wipe and format everything in CWM
- flash rom as per developer suggestions
- wipe battery stats
- boot and do not sign in with your Google account (very important!)
- do not install or restore any apps
- turn off auto-sync and leave data on
- enable auto brightness
- confirm that phone signal is somewhere between -50 and -90dbm
- turn off phone and charge overnight
- turn on in the morning and use normally for the day
- install GSAM if issues persist

It could be a hardware problem also you know.... if something ground off in the phone then the battery will drain faster than anything....I had a n96 with a grounded problem and it use to dead in 4 hrs....
My HTC One M8 dies in just about 12h-15h with screen on time of 3h-4h. It is connected to Wi-Fi network 90% of the time and I don't use a cellular data connection. Auto-Sync is on. Screen brightness is either 25% or 50% in direct sunlight. I am on stock 4.4.4 Rom software number 3.28.401.9
I haven't came across any other M8s so I don't know if the issue is just with my phone. But one of my roommate has an Xperia Z1 and a friend has SGS4 both get around 30h of battery life with moderate to high use. The standby time is not so good because I lose about 15%-25% battery in about 3h-4h everyday when I wake up in the morning. I've tried factory resetting my phone thrice but to no avail. I've installed GSAM and included the screenshots. I want to know if its normal and if not what can I do? Would re-flashing the firmware help?
Take a look in gsam > number of times being held awake or something. I think you have a process or app that is causing the issue. You can try resetting the device and install your apps back one by one to see which app is causing the issue.
Yup, you need to be rooted and have Gsam root companion installed. Then you can post times waking device and held awake time. That's where your issue is. Without root... It will be extremely hard to help. Could be anything. You have near 8 hours of awake time. That's really bad.
