im on a stock rom not rooted and new battery and old battery both discharge really fast. Totally dead in 5-6hrs light use. Im guessing there is a hardware issue with the phone as this isnt normal. Any ideas?
lets see I did a factory reset after Jellybean update
changed the battery for a new one
biggest power drain is showing up as screen 33-39%
I have the thing on power saving mode and mobile data I turn off when not in use.
only thing I can think of that I didnt try is flashing another radio. But I doubt thats it because ive put it in airplane mode and it still looses power fast.

Get Better Battery Stats and check your wake locks. A lot of information in that thread. Might have a rogue app draining you.
Edit: also screen on is always going to be your biggest drain. Keep brightness down as much as you can. App called screen filter is good for achieving lower brightness than system allows. You could try the ktoonsz kernel, undervolted as well. Turning off sounds in settings (key press, vibrate, etc as well). Toggle data and WiFi when not using. These are just some basic suggestions.

This is my second s3 and the first one never had a problem going 10-12 hrs normal use. Im thinking it is a hardware issue as I did a factory reset and it still persists on fast draining.
Edit.. I just disable google talk maybe that was causing it?
It's not Google Talk. Check your battery and it'll show you what's drainage ng it the most. Also check screen brightness

lol sd card?? well I tried it anyway and no, it still drains like a pissing racehorse. Ive noticed this phone gets pretty warm sometimes even with light use. Im not sure what is causing this but must be a factor in why the battery life is so poor. When I talk on phone, not very often, the ear piece actually gets hot. Im gonna send this puppy to samsung and see what they can do.
GSam Battery Monitor can offer better details about your battery usage, including wakelocks, cpu usage, etc.. It's more detailed than what Android offers.
I'd also recommend using an AOSP based rom as they include out any carrier/Samsung services that may adversely affect your battery life, particularly in a fringe coverage area or with many sync and push items. I'd also stay away from powersave mode for the time being.
If you want to know for sure, I'd do something like this:
- update PRL on current rom
- wipe and format everything in CWM
- flash rom as per developer suggestions
- wipe battery stats
- boot and do not sign in with your Google account (very important!)
- do not install or restore any apps
- turn off auto-sync and leave data on
- enable auto brightness
- confirm that phone signal is somewhere between -50 and -90dbm
- turn off phone and charge overnight
- turn on in the morning and use normally for the day
- install GSAM if issues persist
Please post back with updates.
It could be a hardware problem also you know.... if something ground off in the phone then the battery will drain faster than anything....I had a n96 with a grounded problem and it use to dead in 4 hrs....

Is it my phone? I can't work pig wot it is. I checked the battery usage #*#*4636*#*#) and it seems the Android system is using A LOT of it. I tried charging with phone off, clearing battery stats, not overcharging, but just can't resolve this issue.
Also, I have sync set to update manually and have mobile internet off always, only on wen needed. Same with WiFi. Screen is on auto and time off screen lock set to 30 seconds

I could feel WiFi siginal of 2.2 is much better that stock 2.1,
I suppose that the better performance will bring the fast battery drain,
if your custom ROM support WiFi N mode,
that really makes your battery life short that before.
I have the same problem and same settings as you. I read on other forum that people who updated to official 2.2 have even better battery life.
I cant even squeze 20 hours out of my battery :/
You guys should always post what ROMs you are using...
Opendesire 3.3, its the same with defrost.
i also had really bad battery life on those 2 roms
even doing nothing the phone would just keep dropping
go to official froyo 2.2
neophye roms for me have amazing battery life = 48 hrs..

Check if the phone goes to sleep correctly. Spareparts > battery usage: other usage, since last unplugged.
I had the same problem, until I found out that the phone was not going to sleep. (running and screen on percentages were way off. Almost 100% running and a lot less for screen on.
update to the last radio
I found that after forcing everything to install to SD card my battery life plummeted. There were apps/widgets that should have stayed on the phone. Once I moved these back, battery life was back to normal.
I use Systempanel to see the battery drain graph and could see a pattern to it.
Same issue here, Will try Neophyte tonight
Using this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741663, and it's fantastic! However batt life on .08 and .20 radio is a shocker. I watched a 1 min trailer on youtube, in and out and I lost 4% battery. Before with OpenDesire I'd be shocked if the battery percentage even twitched slightly.

I use Defrost 1.5a and I just use about 2% every hour when the phone is sleeping, and that's with auto sync and mobile data enabled. (disabled it's 1%/hour)
Always underclock to the lowest mhz when the screen is off using SetCPU and when you do use your phone make sure the brightness isn't too high.
I could make a whole list of tips, but I'm sure you'll find more than enough of those on the net.

When your screen is off, your phone should automatically go to sleep. Sometimes widgets or apps keep this from happening (like the music player), making it use battery as if you are constantly working on it.
How I resolved this issue was to find out what app or widget caused this. I ended up starting from a fresh reset, installing first all apps I really use (calendar/message widgets, powerstrip etc.)
I tested by installing an app, rebooting (or sometimes not), check the running time of the phone, turning screen off, and check again in 5 minutes. The phone should go to sleep in about 30 - 40 seconds. I am telling you this, because most apps causing this are widgets/apps running constantly.
However, I found in spareparts also that 'settings' was taking alot of usage time in usage statistics. A simple reboot did the trick from here on. But I am guessing I had installed something which made some app not close properly..
Maybe it is better to have a task manager/killer for these situations.
Running and Screen On percentages should not have too much of a difference if your testing and not using the phone while screen is off (music, bg stuff)
You could try juicedefender, it helps improve battery life by disabling unneeded connections while the phone is not in use
So...I'm using 2.1 and for some reason when I'm not even using the phoone..the battery drain is ridiculous. Since I'm new to 2.1, does anyone know what is causing this? Any processes I need to end? Any thing I need to remove?
I'm straight up rooted stock 2.1. No custom roms, just a custom kernel. I only downloaded Pandora, Wordfeud and SetCPU.
Edit: I also wanna add that I leave on 4G as well and I see it idle out and when I turn it off and leave it off I still experience the same amount of drain so I dont think its 4G.
And for more details on the drain...I went to sleep for about 3 hours and during that time I went from 91 to 42.
Edit2: Im gonna actually see if maybe it was just the kernel...I was using the first version of a kernel, not its latest version so Im going to put on the latest. But still, Id liike to know if it was a common problem and how most people fixed it.
Kill the omadrm process with each phone reboot. (Forgot exact name, but that is close) If you aren't always in a 4g area, having that radio always on will drain the battery.

Edit: Also double check your phone standby time and see what percentage your Time Without Signal (TWS) is at. Toggle Airplane mode after each reboot will correct that bug.
Also fyi you can use Tasker to toggle airplane mode for you automatically every boot

Battery life even with removing a few apps is pretty bad.
I think the most I got after a week of tests was about 18 hours and that was with almost no use.
Try downloading JuiceDefender from the market. It's free. What it does really is enable/disable your 3G/4G/WiFi connection when your phone is not in use. It also enables it every 15 minutes (default setting) to get email other updates such as weather. I am not kidding when I say went from an 18 hours to 72 hours hours. Granted, that was with little use.
Can download JuicePlotter as well to get an idea of how your battery is dropping and holding.
Side note that WordFeud constantly runs in the background, so that WILL rape your battery. JuiceDefender will keep it in check. Best app I ever got.
For reference, under 2.1 with JuiceDefender I would lose only about 1%/hour at night when I was sleeping.
Under 2.2 it's more like 2% per hour >.> and I've yet to figure out what's draining it.
I thought I'd chime in since the OP mentioned Pandora. After installing Pandora I noticed my battery drain had gotten significantly worse even when properly quitting out of the app. After uninstalling Pandora battery drain has normalized to the way it was before.
Also, setting your network to sprint only helps with battery too.

maybe where you live it does, but thats an awful idea if you are in a town with little service because it will spend more time searching for service because it can't roam (i live in the middle of nowhere in new hampshire).
instead try to update your PRL. download the SDX stock app removal apk. remove the drm crap. and reboot. then charge your phone all the way, reboot into cwm, and reset your battery stats. then let the battery drain all the way and recharge. that should improve it significantly. thats what i did and it worked pretty damn well. battery life is upwards of 36 hours nominal charge now. and my phone used to drain battery WHILE i was charging it if i used it at all. and that was with a 1 Amp charger. also dont let your battery overcharge, mine seems to drain easier when i leave it plugged in all night.
Ok so ive installed alot of custom roms on my wildfire s and on all of them my battery life sucks. If im on wifi my battery goes down 10 to 15% in like 2 to 3 minuets. Do you guys think its because of the roms or i just need a new battery. Please help.
Type in the call menu : *#*#4636#*#* and go to battery menu.Wrote there all the informations.

Try to delete the batterystats.bin file via CWM.

10 - 15 % in 2 minutes? WTF?
Are you sure your battery isn't faulty?
Even in worst conditions my battery never drained that fast.
Anyways here are some tips:
-Charge phone to 100%
Go to CWM and delete battery stats.
- Dial: *#*#4636#*#*
Go to phone information, In preffered network type Select GSM auto PRL.
- Use juice defender or something which would turn off wifi whenever its not being used.
- Make sure all the accounts aren't set to push as it takes a lot of battery.
- End processes by going to Apps-> Running services.
- Don't use heavy widgets on homescreen or launchers.
- Brightness to auto and timeout time must be less.
I could remember just these. But I guess if it's true that your battery is draining that fast most probably your battery is faulty. Get a new one.
sounds like a faulty battery.
Kill/Uninstall Apps
Yeah, I had this problem :/
What I did was
- download a battery saver app, It closes mobile networks when you're not using them.
- Set the screen to a low but visible setting
- Uninstall some of the memory draining apps
- and kill some of the RAM munching apps.
Hope this works :L
ill try some of them
Don't download a battery saver app, it'll just use cpu cycles and battery even more.
Manually turn off mobile data and wifi when you're not using them.
Don't overclock.
Lower your screen brightness.
And ultimate solution, get an extended battery.
-----------
"You can overclock as much as you want, your phone will always seem too slow."
What kind of charger are you using to charge the battery? If the charger's voltage and Amp's out put is higher then what the phone can take it could be over charging your phone and charging your phone way to fast. If your charger is normal then I would invest in a new battery, a o.e.m battery is good.
So I searched all day for an answer similar to mine and I did not see what I could do.
I was on rooted on ICS until this weekend when I updated to Jelly Bean and rooted again.
My Battery usage was working fine in ICS, what I would call normal battery drain.
After the update I am getting terrible battery use!!!!
I have tried closing, diabling all apps, radios, I have diabled bloatware.
But my battery keeps draining at a rate of 10% and hour!
All this with minor use.
I have opened a few apps and the Play Store but nothing else.
The S3 has just be inJust in standby.
In the settings, under battery it show my main power consumption is the SCREEN at 60%
I dont know how!
When the screen is off, I dont have a video wallaper and when I do power up the screen its so DIM I can hardley see anything.
All this happened after the Jelly Bean update!
Any idea on what I can do?
Do you think a factor restore would help?
Yes, back your dat up first though (contacts, calender, ect.) because you will have to redownload your apps. I did a reset and was on stock after updating but still had terrible battery life. The fix? Take the battery out 40 minutes, put it back in and run it COMPLETELY dead, and recharge it while it's turned off. Make sure you have time to do this without needing the phone because it takes a while. Like 7-8 hours. I've went a day now without much usage at all (still at 90% charge) and have a day left on standby. The battery reset helped more than anything I believe.
Yep same as mine jb update has a heavy battery drain..and my skyvalex callrecorder stopped working..i just flash back to ICS.

My opinion, factory wipe and Re-root it.
Install SetCPU and the Ktoonsez kernal to manage the power settings. Also Go Power Master is a good app to tweak power settings.
In SetCPU you can have it clocked down when the screen it off.
Had the same problem. Called att went through the ranks until I was told by att warranty supervisor that they had no work around and I should root my phone. Shocking they told me that. But I found the problem. I uninstalled the update to Google now and then shut it down. Battery seams to be doing good now.
Got a free battery from att though. I guess cause there higher ups have no idea how to fix drain.

Semi-solved
I somewhat have solved my problem.
What I did was Factory Reset from the Setting menu. I thought I would have lost Root doing this.
It was already set in my mind to just wipe the S3 clean and start over but the root did not get washed out.
So, I used Kies to only restore my contacts.
Instead of having any old apps restored I downloaded them all over again from the Play Store.
So far so good!!
I have better battery life than prior to the reset.
I had been losing 8% and hour in Standby and 10%+ when in use.
So far today I have used the phone with my screen brightness high, made about 10 calls, surfed youtube and I only down 6% in the last 2 hours.
I consider that better.
If there are some things I can add to my diable list that you all know of to give me an EVEN BETTER result please let me know!
Poor battery life here too. Battery settings says screen is eating 78% and Maps eating 10%. I'm a heavy user but its mostly surfing this site and Facebook. I don't play games or watch YouTube much
Does this solve the battery drain issue?
Hiya all.
I haven't got a S3 so I can't confirm this works.....
A friend was having the same battery drain issue and I was going through his settings and noticed that "Sync All" was on.
Turned it off and the battery drain stopped. We think.
It seems to easy to be true. So I'd like more S3 owners to try.

search and install betterbatterystats (read the whole first post) and it will tell you if its wakelocks etc.
Service disabler apps will need a setting to show system apps (or something similar) ticked or switched to etc.
greenify system apps in greenify also needs to be selected. You may also need to cut wake up paths to get it to stay greenified.
You could alternatively delete the apk of hibernate it (byfar the easiest option of all this).

Your 3rd image shows googlequicksearchbox had 370ms (milliseconds) of wakelocks over a 9hr period. I really doubt that is your issue.
If it is your top app, then it is probably because of Google Now launcher listening for OK Google spoken keyword.
I seriously doubt that is your battery drain problem as almost 90% of people probably have OK Google turned on and are using Google Now launcher and only a very few have serious battery drain.
BTW wakelocks aren't the issue usually. In the past it has been "partial wakelocks" which means an app locked the device from sleeping, but never released the lock, so the device never goes to full sleep. If you see some app with partial wakelocks or if you see some app with hours of regular wakelocks then that might be an issue. Minutes or microseconds of wakelocks are inconsequential.
I suggest you flash factory image and install your battery tester only. Turn off wifi, bluetooth, nfc, cell radio. Test the drain overnight. That is a baseline for the minimum drain your device can have. Then enable what wireless stuff you normally have turned on. See what that drain is. Then start installing apps and see what that drain is.
If you have reasonable/expected battery drain with stock and everything turned off, then it is just a process of elimination to see what is causing your battery drain.
If you can't get reasonable/expected battery drain with stock and everything turned off, then you probably have a bad battery.
For the record, my overnight battery drain with everything turned off is 0-1% With wifi turned on about 1-2%. With wifi+cell about 2-3%.
IMO the biggest drains for standby are wifi and/or cell signal related. Either bad signals or apps sending data in background or apps that are polling all the time.

What is your battery drain per hour with nothing installed and all wireless turned off and everything stock?
I'd only return it if that is significantly more than 0-.2% or 1% every 5 hours.
Otherwise it is something you have installed or something to do with the signal and how it interacts with your phone.
Once you start installing stuff or turning on wireless (wifi/bt/cell) then it is no longer purely about the battery and there are more factors that need to be isolated independently.
You really need to establish a baseline to see what the minimum battery drain is. Then you can determine if the battery is the problem or something else.
If you just install everything and turn everything on, there are too many moving parts.

Do you think I should use Adaptive brightness for more battery life?

Which battery life was the one you think you have a problem with, standby or in use? IMO for in use battery time this phone is about average. Your title of "wakelock" made it seem like you were concerned about standby battery time as it doesn't matter if there is a wakelock if the device is already turned on and in active use.
When turned on, the screen is probably the number one thing eating power, so adaptive brightness could help, but if you are in a bright area, it might be worse than if you fixed the brightness below max.
Even if you have adaptive brightness turned on, the slider scale still is useful as you give the adaptive brigthness mechanism some idea what level of brightness you feel comfortable when the mechanism detects dark, med, bright situations.
One of the worse things for eating power is for the cell radio to be turned on but have no signal, like inside office building or just a bad signal area in general. The reason is the cell radio is power efficient once it establishes signal, but when it is searching for (or loses) signal it uses a lot of power.
If you are doing a lot of disk activity like taking video or hdr pictures, it would probably help to have your userdata unencrypted as this device does software (kernel) encryption and doesn't use the fast/more power efficient co-processor.

Standby is the problem, on screen times are good enough.
Anyway, I don't even know what to do at this point. Android N didn't help enough (cell data is off), I guess I can flash Android 6.0 again and then try to fix it using apps...
What do you suggest I should do, I'm out of ideas at this point.

What is the power drain over a couple of hours with *no apps installed* completely stock, and wifi/cell turned off? What is the change when wifi is turned on?

Have you set "WiFi on during sleep" to "Never"? in the Advanced WiFi settings?
In the original release, there was a bug where WiFi would stay on even if you had set it to "Never" draining battery in standby.
Somewhere between MDA89E and MHC19Q they fixed it and WiFi will go to deep sleep after being in standby for a while, but they introduced another (or exposed existing) bug where WiFi will not resume after coming out of sleep, unless you cycle WiFi off/on. So you're standby battery should be better with this setting, but it'll be a little more annoying when turning on your device.
