[Q] Sleep Battery Life - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey everybody,
Just made the jump from the iPhone 4S and have done the custom ROM/kernel thing the past week. Things were good at the start but I feel them slowly deteriorating.
I find my battery life during sleep has become much worse than before. I mean, it still kills the 4S which would see ~25% overnight. But I'm seeing 10% overnight right now, and was ~2% earlier in the week. I normally have my phone on the charger at night, but didn't last night and I'm kinda glad I got to see this. Makes me realize why I was likely chewing through more in the day too.
You can see what I'm running below in my signature. Last night I had 5 instances where the phone woke on its own. Likely due to emails coming in.
Am I expecting too much from my modifications? Am I doing something wrong? I'm ready to toss AOKP aside because of other issues anyway, but yesterday I also read it was known to have some excessive battery drain as well. Without turning this into a battle to defend the ROM you use (like half the threads in here), if you have other suggestions, feel free to throw in a ROM suggestion. I'll attach some pictures of my battery screen so anyone willing to give me a hand can help.
Thanks in advance.

I had this problem when I was running franco too. Switched to leankernel and never looked back. I get about 4-6% drain overnight as long as I dont do something stupid like leave something running by exiting with home instead of the back button. I also have wifi on 24/7 and gps off unless im nav'in. No BT

I'm hesistant to blame the kernel. I was using franco prior to AOKP without issue. I didn't make that clear in the OP. I went 4.0.4 Stock -> Stock + franco -> AOKP b31 + franco. Things were good the first two steps and I'd like to think the first few days on AOKP.
Perhaps I have some background processes chewing battery - but there's nothing with a higher battery drain than Chrome beta with 2%. My phone idle and Cell standby had huge drain though. Could a weaker than normal signal cause this? Could my radio be the culprit?

Steps to best diagnose idle battery drain.
-Install CPU Spy and Better Battery Stats.
-Charge phone to full and let it run for several hours undisturbed (easiest to charge before bed, then unplug it when you know it won't be used till morning).
-Take quick note of your % loss per hour. Around 1%, you're golden. 1-2 is pretty normal. >3 and you've got issues.
-Launch CPU Spy. Most of the time should be deep sleep (we're talking about 95%). If your phone has been awake a lot, there's either an app that refuses to let your phone rest, or an OS/Kernel issue. If it's not extreme but noticeable, you likely just need to reign in settings on some apps to keep them from syncing so often or working in the background.
-Launch Better Battery Stats. Select Partial Wakelocks from the menu. These are all cases of apps waking the phone up, sorted by length. Go look at problem apps' settings/consider uninstalling if you don't need them. Kernel wakelocks should be low too.
Keep in mind that the goal here isn't really to get all these things to zero so do not obsess over small showings. Facebook with push notifications but updates set to never keeps my phone awake for about a minute or two every night, for instance. So does Handcent SMS. If you flash a rom and your phone needs to do a lot of syncing it's likely to show up in this kind of test as well. But for a night with nothing going on, nothing should be keeping your phone up for more than a few minutes total.

Weaker than normal signal can kill a phone battery, when I'm in lecture out in the bumfuck nowhere school I go to, I get -100 to -120dbm, which kills my battery while i'm at school. If thats your situation not much to do besides hope radios may increase your signal, but if not then your basicly as SOL as i am and may have to just charge it

Android System eating the battery

Hey all, I don't know if anyone has even noticed on their Evo's but on mine, the Android system usually eats most of the battery. I noticed there is a ton of processes under Android system that are running compared to like five on my Hero. I've never seen the core system processes take up more than maybe 15% of the battery, but right now, I'm at like 41% with 16m 6s of CPU total and 47s of CPU foreground. If anyone knows why this is or a way to fix it, please let me know. I'm on the first MR update. I've been able to get a lot of battery stuff figured out, if I can get the system to calm down, then I should be able to get even better battery life than my Hero.
I'm seeing the same thing, android system is at 96% battery use after letting the phone sit overnight. Never saw that on my nexus, this is strange.
Could be related to the fact that everything is syncing up, I just activated last night too.

Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
Yeah, the system seems to have calmed down a bit today, though I also have the OC widget running to keep the processor lower during sleep. I'm guessing its helping, but I'm not sure if there is something else to get it down. I almost never even saw the System show up in usage on my Hero, now its one of the top contributers. I got used to having custom roms on the Hero, but so far all I need on the Evo is unrevoked. I know a lot of people around here don't like it, but I found I only needed a couple of apps that require root and so far love it. That OC widget really comes in handy.
maybe i can clear things up a little bit for you guys...what you see in the battery use section is distributed across 100% of the time since you last had it plugged in. if you notice all the percentage numbers add up to 100%.
if you plug your phone in and turn it on and off on you will see that android system is probably around the 90's thats because android system has used 90+ percent of the phone since you plugged it in....over time that number will lower, becuase other things will start using the battery power... what you see is a percentage based on time. not based on whats actually working RIGHT THEN AND THERE do you guys understand?
I too am having that problem and at 15% battery life warning - it still shows my Android system @ 40-44% usage after 8hrs of work.
I mostly text message all day long due to work - make phone calls and recieve calls from work every hour. GPS on for no more than 15min all day long to get direction when my keymap book doesnt help.
4g off, bluetooth off, background data 15 min only (gps) than off, gps off when not in use, mobile network (3g) off when not in use.
I would have figured my screen being on would have drained my battery life since I check text message every 10-15mins for 8hrs...
So went to work at 9am, 100% life
got off work 6pm, 25% life
I've done all the tricks, cdma only, force stopped a bunch of apps, goggle talk off, sync off, making sure maps/gps has been closed (forced or not)
still disappointed with battery life.
Unrooted Evo
My crappy AT&T Razr lasts me 2-3days with text message + call + 1.5hr of playing Bejeweled a day
*facepalm* you guys don't get it....

check your hardware version there is a thread about different types of evos and it seems like everyone who has the hardware revision 0001 has really bad battery life. i would exchange your device.
Yes we know, Freelancerx, or at least I do. But after over 8 hours and the system is still using more of the battery than anything else is a little disturbing. Never seen that on any other device. I have Hardware 0002.
I have this same issue with hardware version 0002. I run Fresh 1.0.1, i use Netarchy-toastmod kernal, have latest radio. I have also tried Damage Control (did get slightly better battery life out of DC but not amazingly different)
after 7 hrs since unplugged my andriod system is at 39%, cell standby 28% phone idle 20% display 9%.
i dont have bluetooth, wifi or 4g on. I use juicedefender+ultimate to turn off apn when screen is not on. I use set CPU to underclock when i am unplugged and go down to 128 when screen off and i am Stilll lucky if i make it all day with moderate usage.
Every day it is the same andrioid system is around 40% of the usage for the time it was unpluged.
the following is listed under included packages (not sure if this shows the same for everyone or if it shows what packages are running)
BRCMBluetoothService - Bluetooth is not on so if it shows packages running this may be an issue
Sync Feeds - I have all android syncs off and mail at 6 hours
settings storage
Rosie Utility
Acounts & syync
Account and sync settings
settings
HTC Widget Download Manager
Network Location
Setup
HTC Checkin service
Checkin serivce
VPN services
Android system
Wonder if there is something to the android system on these (ie something not turning off that should) or if we are all just crazy and happen to get the same results.
I had a hardware 0002 model and often experienced the same thing with high system % usage.
My phone was replaced, due to a screen issue, and now I have the 0003 model and seems system % is much lower so far.
I haven't installed any system update yet, so I am on the first original release rom (not rooted yet).
Going to be testing it for a few days before I update and root, so I can make a fair comparison between the original and current oem's.

I think everyone here understands this. the question i think we are trying to figure out is why with similar usage and configurations some people get 40-60% android systems usage while others get 10% over the same period of time.
Android system is way too high.

Yes but if it is configured in an optimal way then android system is always beneath cell standby and phone idle.
For example, today after 15h 28m 23s since unplugged I have...
Cell stanby 38%
Phone idle 37%
Android System.....12%
That is with background processing with auto syncing every hour or so.

[Q] Cell Standby/Phone Idle battery woes

The battery on my Evo has been plummeting recently. A while ago I could make 36 hours easy, and now I am lucky to get 12. The reason it seems is cell standby/phone idle, according to battery info. Over the course of last night I went from 85% to 28% while I just slept, and according to battery info these two things are responsible for that.
I'm not sure what they are or how to decrease, however. I read that NV and PRI 1.90 was causing problems for a lot of people so I tried downgrading to 1.77 as suggested, but I have no idea where to find the information to see if I successfully downgraded. I am running CM7 nightly build 23, I have wiped battery stats once and I am currently waiting for the phone to die before charging it again, but this has been going on for quite a few days over numerous roms and battery wipes. If I put my phone into airplane mode, the battery is hardly touched overnight. During the day I need my phone on however and the battery drains just as fast, whether I am using it or not.
Any suggestions?
ps. under accounts and sync the only thing I have set to sync is email by push, I receive only a few emails a day and a couple at night so I don't think that would be the problem. Facebook is also set to sync contacts, but only find status updates and the like when I refresh manually. Twitter, and my google account in there but both of those are set to sync manually.

I have never used spare parts in my life so bear with me; but when opening it now all I see is device info including battery history, battery info and usage stats, and general options which all have to do with animations, font size, haptic feedback, or compatability mode. I don't see anything that talks about wake lock in here
You click battery history, then on the first tab, click partial wake lock, and on the second, you can click since last boot.

thanks! under partial wake usage since last boot, it's hardly nothing.
Android system is by far the winner with almost 11 minutes of usage, email is next at just under 2 minutes, facebook at about 1.5 minutes, and a couple other things (dialer, sms, google voice, google services) all coming in between 5 and 30 seconds.
Hmm...are you in a bad signal area or leave your radios [3G,wifi, 4G] on all the time?
I suppose I have 3g on. I never leave wifi or 4g on and my signal is between -85 and-96, according to battery info my time without signal is 0%
Well you should turn your 3G off when not using it, that'll definitely save your battery.
I will try that in the future, but it still does not explain why I am getting 1/3 the battery life I used to while doing much more to conserve battery. Could it have to do with my pri and prl and such? Maybe I need to update profile and such, like it's not looking for the right towers? I don't know much of anything about how polling and service works.
What's your wake time vs. your up time?
It sounds like you have something staying awake.
Have you gone to menu>setting>About Phone>software information to see if your PRI version & NV have been downgraded?
What kernel are you using?
Are you using RA or Clockmod for recovery?

I'm not sure how to check wake time vs up time, but it would likely be useless right now, as I nandroid backup, flashed a sense rom, updated my prl and profile, checked to make sure i did downgrade pri/nv and then went back to cm7, so any battery info it is going to give me right now will be inaccurate while I wait for it to charge/discharge again over the course of the night. It does still have my previous information though since it was a nandroid backup and I've had it plugged in entirely since then.
I did succesfully downgrade to 1.77 PRI
kernel is savagedzen 0.2.1 cfs havs wimax GB (2.6.37.4)
RA for recovery.
I also uninstalled a few programs including facebook and twitter in case there was anything like that interfering with my services. I still use Go contacts and Go sms however, but I have unchecked any options with them to have facebook integration. If you could tell me how to check up/wake I can check that tomorrow morning when I wake up to see and go against whatever I had. Currently I'm just trying a few things out before tonight to see if anything had helped. An idle phone sitting on my window sill for 8 hours should not drain the battery THAT much, so something is off.
Go back into men>settings>about phone>battery (you can check it now)
If your up time and awake time are the same, you have a program that's stuck in wake. I also use a program called "system panel" that will show me live time which programs are using the most resources. OR you can use "Battery Monitor".
If you have wifi at home I would suggest you set up your phone to connect to wifi and shut your 3g off. I use a program called "Y5-battery saver". It automatically connects me to wifi at home and disconnects and switches to 3g when I'm away from the house.
attached is a screen grab of the graph from battery info
if needed:
cell standby says time on 15h 44m 47s (same as time listed on battery)
phone idle says 14h 46m 58s
(these 2 items used 47% and 44% respectively
thanks for the wifi tip, i used it on sense a lot but with most aosp roms it causes problems unless you set it to never sleep, and i didnt know what that affect it had on battery so i usually just turned it on when necessary or when in a low-signal area like school.
That doesn't seem that bad for ~14hrs on battery.
my problem is that it's while I'm sleeping. I used to get 36 hours of battery before getting to 15% and being told to plug in, and now I used it a little last night, went to bed and woke up to it being at 28% and was told soon after to plug it in. I just dont remember sleeping destroying battery life like that in the past. granted 15 hours isnt that bad, but when 10 of the 15 hours the phone is just sitting there it worries me because if I were to go through a normal day, where I charge it at night and use it during the day, there is just about 0% chance that I'll be able to make it through the day without plugging it in sometime in the middle.

yeah, that's not bad. You're still at 87%? LOL. Maybe I need to switch to AOSP ROM!
I'm Back to 87%, I've been on the charger all day, hence the battery graph raise. the dramatic raise was from when I flashed the sense rom to update my profile/prl. (obviously it wasn't monitoring during that time and when i came back and started monitoring again the battery was much higher)
it actually died after ~15 hours, with 10 of those 15 hours having doing nothing. I got systempanel to see if it gives me any more info and the main reason i use aosp is because of the terrific backlight handling. I like it to be super dim while inside and bright outside, and find on sense roms the auto backlight is too bright under normal conditions. I should be getting much better battery life than this. I'll try again tonight with the battery being monitored to see whats up and I'll try going into airplane mode tomorrow to see what that does at night for comparisons sake. hopefully there is just some program using lots of data that I don't know about. i'd love a quick fix lol
It's almost as if there's an Evo "battery curse"!!!!!! It has been HELL finding a ROM that I love that has great battery life. I really liked Myn's but for some reason I could NEVER find a kernel that would give me great battery life. I'm currently using ultrablakk 3 by King's and love the interface, just trying to find the right kernel myself. I think I'll do a nand and try an AOSP for a change. Vaelpak looks stable. Good luck with the battery life issues!
I'm using an unrevoked-rooted evo and at 10% wake time, it lasts for about 15 hours unplugged. That is why I usually keep it plugged in whenever possible. I have task killer and do not synch anything except for weather and news. I do have 3G running all the time as well. I wouldn't do that if it weren't for the email checks (4 accounts checking every 30 min). If the 3G could be automated to turn on during the checks, that would save more battery life, but I don't know of anything to do that yet.

If you get great battery life, please share your tips here!

I'm currently on the CM7 ROM, I have juice defender and done all the minor tweaks as far as disabling wireless network location, turn off the wifi and GPS, and an app killer. I still only manage at max 9 hours before my phone tells me to recharge.
If your getting great battery life, help me and others by sharing your tips here.

Yeah, I need some help too. I get about a day and a half with no use at all, and about 10 hours with minimal use. 4 hours with real world usage... I can't deal with this. Could it be the battery? It performs like a 1 year old, used, refurb battery came with a stock phone!

Have you configured the battery since flashing the rom?
I get decent enough battery life, with light usage I can go about 36 hours w/o a charge but on my heavy usage days I usually have to use the car charger a few times a day.

all of these... biggest one is to turn off data when the phone is in your pocket. use wifi when u can, avoid using 4g unless plugged in, configure the battery in recovery (i've actually notice that this helps less than anything else for me), and finally: get an extended battery. it's worth the extra hours u can squeeze out of it. don't expect more than 4-5 hours screen on time with any rom/kernel/modem combo with a stock battery.

Yeah I also did that wipe battery stats at recovery.
I just thought maybe my expectations were too high, although it seems as if my battery drains drop pretty fast.
I would say about -10% battery drop every hour, just checking the time and send/receive text messages. Occasionally I surf the Web on the phone when on break at work. Other than that the phone is in my pocket, and after my 9 hour workday my phone demands the charger.
This is with the stock battery, so I guess this is normal unless I'm using the extended battery?

u could also run a kernel that allows for over (under) clocking/undervolting. that helps some, too
get the duricell portable battery extender, add milliamps to your arsinal in one way or another with extended batterys or whatever, if you call sprint and complain loudly and dickly they will rebate you the cost that u spend on a new battery or batt extender whatever... that being said all the above options work great, u can also use night mode on chainfire 3d to save battery, or perhaps half your pixel rate, or perhapes turn off some colors (havent seen an app to do this yet) and reset your battery memory in cwm, kill ur batt, charg while off, then cycle again like that. (theres an app for that) if your not rooted, root your phone. if you dont want to root your phone, cycle ur battery the old fasion way or pop it into a rooted phone and do it.
I used to get really poor battery life (due to my phone not sleeping as evidenced by Spare Parts app). I rooted, used Titanium Backup to freeze various apps, and got an Zboost antenna booster for the office and called Sprint who sent me an Airave for the house. I wiped battery stats and cleared my Dalvic cache and the thing the finally got me right was finding out the Amazon MP3 app was still logged in though not running. Once I made sure I was logged out of that and Lattitude (Google Map feature) and Facebook, I haven't had any problem with a sleeping phone. Stock Froyo, standard battery, but rooted. When they say a bad app keeps your phone from sleeping I think they mean an app that requires log in...although this does not seem to be a problem if you stay logged in from a browser, only from an app!

You may be shooting yourself in the foot with some of those things. App killers aren't that useful on Gingerbread since they keep killing apps that just reload on their own, and every time the reload it uses power. Just because an app is loaded doesn't mean it is running. Try letting the system take care of it. Juice Defender may help a little but it keeps shutting down data and starting it up, which means you don't get as much usefulness out of the phone and may waste power in some circumstances.
See what you have set to sync. Turn off any autosyncs you don't need, like weather screens, facebook, etc. If at all possible set them to only sync when you open the program.
I use the exchange option for gmail using the stock samsung app, which gives me push email but doesn't have to keep polling the server. I don't know if that makes a difference compared to imap, but it works well for me. don't think you have that option in CM7.
Wifi is a much more efficient way transfer data than 3G, use it whenever you can, and set it to never sleep. Otherwise the 3G radio keeps starting up again and wasting battery.
You can freeze the DRM stuff if you don't use it. I don't know if it really makes a difference but everyone thinks it does, so I do it.
Having a black wallpaper helps a little because on a AMOLED screen a black pixel uses no power.
The biggest battery killer is being in a bad signal area. If you always have 0 or 1 bars then your phone is going to always be draining the battery trying to find a good cell. In that case Roam Control may help you.
That's about all I do, and with the latest Stock gingerbread EH17 and EI22 I'm sitting with about 40 to 50% left after 12 hours, that's with light to moderate use.
I've been through the ringer with this. I'm pretty comfortable now, routinely managing to have 33% of battery left after 12hrs w/3g always on, sync always on, intermittent music listening, 2.5-3hrs of gaming and general "screen on" time (auto brightness), 1.1 GHz OC, no undervolting, and GPS always on. Here's what I'd suggest:
Flash a ROM w/ NO CIQ (thanks k0nane!) - In addition to being a leech on your privacy it's a leech on your battery. It's old news to long-time Epic owners at this point, but ditching CIQ improves battery life and overall responsiveness of the Epic. A popular stable Froyo ROM for this is SFR 1.2.
Minimize always-running services - Long press your homescreen, select "shortcuts," select "settings," and select "running services." Tap this to see what's running ongoing services (not apps) your phone is running. All of these are drawing current to stay in RAM. Things like Juice Defender, Tasker, and others show up here and draw power in doing so. JD and Tasker especially can drain a lot because they perform constant tasks as well. Uninstall them and let your phone manage itself.
The same goes for task managers and app-stoppers - Froyo and above does this fine on it's own
Freeze/Uninstall system services you don't use - This includes things like Sprint voicemail, the "Email" app, and the "SprintAndroidExtension.apk," and SNS services. You'll most likely find these on the "Running Services Page" as well. You can Titanium Backup to uninstall them, but I recommend the SDX Stock App Remover as that can restore them (TB can't reliably). TB can freeze these as well, which accomplishes basically the same thing. SNS is connected to Facebook, so if you use that a lot you might want to keep it. DRM services can also be removed, but may cause problems reading the SD card. I stay away from it.
Use Spare Parts to monitor wakelock and CPU usage - If you notice something giving you persistent trouble, shut it down. This is time-consuming, but you'll get a good feel for what apps are out there to accomplish similar tasks and which one best suits your needs.
Uninstall apps you don't use - Next time you wipe and flash a new ROM, reinstall or restore backed up apps as you need to use them and not all at once. You may find you don't need quite a few of them, allowing you to keep more space open on your phone and requiring less current to maintain them
Don't charge the battery overnight - most phones can reach capacity in 2-4 hours depending on charge level. Beyond that, holding at or around fully charged will degrade the battery by denying it the ability to release the stored energy. I charge mine in the evening a few hours before bed and top it off in the morning before leaving for work.
Get an 1800mAh battery sold for the Epic Touch - this is what moved me form "getting by" to "definitely comfortable." For around $25 (incl shipping) on ebay, I've gotten a new lease on my Epic's life. It may seem like cheating to bring in a new battery, but it makes a lot of difference WITHOUT adding more bulge to your phone (makes it a tad heavier though).
Hope this helps. Remember, of course, that what works for one phone won't necessarily work for another. Despite being the same model, minor imperfections in silicone can create individual temperaments for each phone.
I as always trying to make my battery last by stopping this and uninstalling that. Then I thought; why did I buy this phone with all of these capabilities to turn them all off
So, something like the "Hyperion Sprint Samsung Epic Touch 4G 2 x Battery + Charger" (too "young" to post a direct link)
Would fit in/work with the Epic 4G (without needing a new cover)? Even though its for the Touch?
Lol, I've been doing many of the suggestions across the board, and have gotten much better results. But I'm still not "comfortable" with my battery strength, especially when I'm unable to charge my phone all day...
Looking into your running services is a big one. week ago my battery life greatly decreased. I kept seeing market update pending and it wouldnt go away. Never update never go away. I manually updated the market and the battery is back to wonderful. It drops 2-3% at night off charger. Thats about 8 hours.
A sticky with all the main running services and which ones you can stop would be wonderful. I have sns services running. I think i can stop it but not positive. I also have sanservice running supposedly some type of samsung update. Its not doing anything but its been running for 2 days. No negative effect on battery(that i notice) but its running. Also make sure you turn location off. Ive also noticed that even when you back out of google maps its still in running services. A restart fixes that but thats annoying.

SNSservice is a Facebook and Feeds and Updates Widget service. ALWAYS stop it. It does not matter to Facebook, even if you use it, but if you remove the Feeds and Updates Widget on one of your screens, that service continues to search for it and will kill your battery in a matter of hours (it starts a "restarting" loop). Either leave the widget on or kill this service after every reboot or if you are rooted, freeze it along with DRM service.
My other battery tips are to log out or sign out of every app such as Lattitude, Facebook, Amazon MP3 (it's ok to use them, but don't just back/exit out, actually sign out of them so you have to log back in next time). Apparently, staying signed in causes your phone to not sleep and you can't find what is causing it (i.e. you can't see it "running" anywhere...people call it a misbehaving app, and you would have to delete apps one at a time to find it by trial and error).

[Q] High "Awake" vs "Screen On" time

Let me preface this by saying I'm not complaning about battery life as 36h is very good. That said, I feel like my phone is awake much longer that it should be. Anyone have any ideas why my Awake time is so much higher than my Screen-on time?
Once again, I'm not complaining but considering my phone was awake almost 5x longer than the screen was on, I feel like I could squeeze some more life out of the phone. I had 1 exchange account @ 15min, 1 gmail on push, no talk/g+, ~2-3 hours off wifi (4g), gps on, bluetooth off, 4.0.4, leanKernel.
When analyzing the wakelocks, I don't see anything that would explain almost 6 hours of extra awake time:
Considering most of this charge I was on wifi, I think I should have been able to achieve more than 1.5h screen-on time. Especially when I see people getting 4-5+ hours on theirs. What could be causing this seemingly excess awake time?
Since those screen shots, I've done another full cycle and here are my results. Same settings as before. It looks as if I did a bit better with the ratio of awake vs screen on, but I still only got ~20 hours. I'll admit, this had much more 4g time and heavier usage.
As you can see it's better, as it was only awake about 3x as much as the screen. You can see where I was at home in the second screenshot (The long bar of wi-fi) and that included me sleeping yet it shows that the phone was consistantly waking up overnight without any usage. Short of "email", I'm not sure what could be causing it. I got MAYBE 3 e-mails overnight.
Signed out of talk/g+/latitude
Location services was NOT disabled in either set of screenshots. Disabled it and charging now. Maybe that will help?
Have you checked out your wakelocks using BetterBatteryStats (found here on XDA)? Also, download CPU Spy from the market and check how long your phone is in what state. If it isn't in deep sleep too often, you might have an app or service keeping your phone awake. Background Data of any kind usually does that. Also, the first culprit I would investigate is Google Maps. Uninstall that bad boy and test your phone out. I am betting you that 60% of the time, the problem with your phone being awake too often is with Maps running unnecessarily in the background. And to be clear, Maps self-restarts itself even after logging out of Latitude and closing the app completely

I have attached all the wakelocks to the previous two posts. I didn't attach CPU spy but I did check it every time. Usually it's between 60-80% but most often it's >70% in deep sleep.
Just did a fresh wipe with a app restore using the market. Location services have been disabled. I have uninstalled all gMaps updates and disabled the app. Is this good enough? Should I convert to user and uninstall using TB?
Just wanted to chime in and say I'm seeing a very similar profile to what you posted. And I'm not entirely sure, but I think this started when I flashed this ROM. What I feel like I'm seeing is that active use of the phone seems to be more of a drain than it used to, but I'm not sure how much of that would be placebo (i.e. remembering when I first got the phone around the holidays and there were a lot of relaxed days at home with constant wifi).
But right now I'm seeing 5.5 hours of awake time and 1 hour of screen on time, with 27% remaining. Total time is 42 hours, which seems to round everything out to a decent battery life, but again, 1 hour of use for 70% of the battery seems lower than what I remember. Not sure if a vote for seeing the same behavior is one for this being normal or us both having the problem, but I can try to post screenshots/more detailed info later if it would help.
This is on the above linked rom with stock kernel, 4.0.4 radios.
That's the same ROM I'm using and I agree, 70% usage for 1h screen time seems too much. I've seen people get over 2.5h screen on time on pure 3/4g
I'm going to see if disabling maps and location services help. Will report back.
I would be interested to see any SS you have, might help.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
This is after a fresh wipe, fresh kernel install, no maps, no g+, no gTalk, no GPS, no location services, just gmail and 1 exchange @ 15 minutes
Any advice as to what's going on would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.
I also have a problem with wake-locks.
Since phone is relatively new ~2weeks its still stock 4.0.2 GSM. After some time my battery life fell and thanks to XDA i think i found the problem Google backup.
I disabled Google backup to see if i get the same awake time tomorrow.
If the problem doesn't go away, is it possible to resolve this problem without factory reset of the phone?
Here are some screenshots I made the other day, taken a bit into a charge but immediately prior the phone was down to <6%. Didn't get a capture of the kernel wakelocks but as you reported, the screen on time falls far below the wake time, and the wakelocks don't seem to come anywhere near to explaining the difference.
I just installed the 6.3.0 google maps, which claims to increase battery performance for location and latitude services. I'll try to make a comparison next time my battery is drained.
I've signed out of latitude before but generally don't redo this upon rebooting the phone. Does it sign in by default on every reboot?
Well after disabling backup thing im still getting 90% wake time from backup service so i will try to do a factory reset over weekend and hope it goes away... Will post resoults in case some 1 else gets this problem.

This looks to me like some sort of Maps issue. Try to uninstall/disable maps and see if it goes away. Looks like it's stuck trying to locate you with maps somehow based on those wakelock names.

Hopefully the factory reset will fix it, that is an odd problem.
It seems to me like my problem was the version of leankernel I was using. I went from 10.0exp2 to 2.01exp2 and it's much much better
Actually, the kernel upgrade did not fix my problem. I did seem to figure out what was happening though.
This entire time I've noticed that my phone would standby and sleep very well on Wi-Fi but when I switched to data it seemed as if I would bleed juice. I discovered that my "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" was set to "always" and I believe that was causing my excess wakes.
I've changed it to "Never" and I'm doing some tests. I'll be sure to report back if anyone is watching this thread.

mine is opposite of that, i standby fine on data but terribly on wifi. im guessing that is background syncing. i just have to figure out what is doing it
i have my wifi set to never too for better battery life. It seems counter intuitive, but wifi is better on power than 3g/4g. So preventing the phone from leaving wifi back to cellular is better for battery. All my phones have been like this.
yeah thats what i thought it does but mine drains faster on wifi...i leave it on cause i barely get signal in my room an if i sit on 3g it just takes a long time to do anything
What type of drain do you get over 3g vs wifi?
Yesterday I was playing around on 3g all day and I was seeing an average of 6%/hr. My phone is consistantly awake 20-25% of the time according to betterbatterstats. Screen on will always be far less than half of my awake time. Wifi drains around 1%/hr
I did a wipe of my 4.0.4 install and flashed a fresh kernel download. I'm not logging into exchange because, for some reason, I think that's my problem.
Also, changing to Never didn't really fix my issue.

S3 Massive battery and "Android System" usage with and without charging

I'm having a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S3 (rooted, but no custom ROM) through AT&T where it's losing battery power at a much higher rate than normal every once in a while.
Specifically, today, I was using the GPS feature and charging it in my car, and yet, even though it said it was charging, the battery continued to lose charge. Also, in the past, the phone has lost charge very quickly, and when I check the battery usage, "Android System" is very high on the list, up to 60% (with "Screen" being at 11%, which is usually the biggest culprit for me since I leave the screen on a lot). One time, I went to bed at around midnight and had forgotten to plug in my phone. When I woke up it was off. I turned it back on and looked at the battery stats using 3c's Battery Monitor Widget and saw that it lost charge quite slowly until about 5am, when suddenly the usage went up dramatically, and the phone went from about 60% to 0% in the course of an hour and a half of non-use.
Because this is not a problem I can reproduce on command, I'm not sure exactly what application/process is causing it. Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone else experienced things like this happening before? (Besides me having to pay for the "betterbatterystats" app?)
Edit: Also, "Android System" sometimes is sometimes listed as "gsiff_daemon" in the battery stats, and within 3c's Battery Monitor Widget, Android System is separate from "gsiff_daemon", where gsiff_daemon's usage is almost 15 times the usage of Android System.
Checkout this thread to see if the gsiff_daemon is your problem. tl;dr when the system is hot and tearing through the battery, go to system settings -> Developer options -> and check Show CPU usage. If gsiff_daemon is the top or second highest on the list, then that is your problem. To solve it for the moment, use system tuner, or something else, to kill gsiff_daemon. There is no permanent cure at the moment, other than to delete gsiff_daemon. Both of those fixes require root, the non-root fix is to reboot.
If gsiff_daemon is not on the list, then something else is the problem, but Show CPU Usage should give you an idea of what system process is running hard.
Samsung Push problem
J M L,
Thanks for the information. I'll do that if the problem arises again. However I also did something else that looks like it may have been the solution for my particular problem, which was disabling the "Samsung Push" service in the Application Manager. So far, my battery life has gone back down to very reasonable levels.

Interesting, I installed "micro cpu monitor" shows thin line at top of screen showing both cores.
I haven't had this happen for some time now but after playing with google play and maps downloading offline maps etc I noticed my 2nd core pegged out.
Having seen this in the past & ignoring it I now realize that majorly drains the battery as well as it getting warm.
A simple reboot seems to be the only thing that fixes it. Clearing ram and closing recent screens dies nothing to clear the "cpu jam".
If left alone, it always shows the culprit as "android system"
As to what part of "android system" I don't know.
But until we figure this out for good, that little micro cpu monitor. App is sweet for peace of mind to know all is well or whether a reboot is needed. For what it's worth, I also noticed that after the event, that my auto rotate to landscape was mysteriously unchecked?
If it jams again, I'll have to see if it gets unchecked again, unknown if there is a relation.

do any of you guys have the "increase volume in pocket" setting on in phone-->settings?
also do any of you have motion settings enabled and/or autorotation on?
Seems it has to do with the gyro issue
also are you guys rooted or non-rooted?
Contact sync?
i noticed this today and while troubleshooting, noticed contact sync from google says "sync is currently experiencing problems..." maybe?

I read the thread about gsiff_daemon culprit. I had it listed as a possible battery drain culprit. The thread says the issue may happen after a hot reboot...which I did have. Killing gsiff_daemon was not immediately effective. I renamed the file so it wouldn't get used...like the thread recommended. I had to reboot to get normal battery drain back and have yet to see the issue again. But i wont know for some time...or maybe when/if i get a hot reboot...which is really rare. Do yourself a favor, and buy better battery stats. Its a must have tool...and it's not expensive.
I wonder if this problem has been solved with latest lj7 jellybean from sprint

so with some trial and error i found some resolutions ..
first, i used Watchdog and it told me that the media services is killing battery too.
so doing a full wipe does not always fix this.. but what does, is reboot and wait about 1 hour charging and it will calm down. this was just something i noticed. so what i did is wipe out my SD cards, both of them, cleared them out 100% formatted the External SD, and used recovery to format the internal. From there it seem to work, i put my stuff back, and it seems ok.
problem is, when you install a lot of rom's and have bad reboots some files get messed up and you have to do it all over again..
problem was with AOPK, CM and TW roms.

My experience with froyo/gb/ics is that things have been getting progressively better over the years. But with each so called UPGRADE of an OS or even APPS, we often have to deal with bugs or incompatibilities. I am eager to upgrade to a stock based JB soon, but wisdom says, for 20 things improved, there will be 5 things broken....or hurting in some way. Early adopters suffer the most as usually these issues get ironed out...most of them.
BUT...these stuck drains...wake locks etc., it seems they will happen when they do no matter how many issues get fixed. Over the years, I've had random standby drains caused by Maps/Nav. Maybe it's ok for months, then after a particular update, it's back...and unpredictable. The YES...a reboot, just like with a PC, is a quick short term workaround.
Finally, with the App CURRENT WIDGET, there is a provision to watch for high drain in standby. It watches MilliAmp (ma) readings over time..to determine if you have a rogue drain. That's different than monitoring the CPU. (Some drains do not cause much CPU activity) BUT UNFORTUNATELY, that app won't work with our S3's because of a lack of hardware support. Works great with HTC and many others. It's a bummer because I used to use it and have my HD2 reboot if a 15min consecutive high drain was recorded in standby....thereby saving the battery and usually killing the bug.
Crapppp
Jellybean didn’t solve it. Gsiff_daemon just popped up for me. Just renamed it AGAIN.
Hopefully it won't pop up again
