Reducing WiFi power emission - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry, I'm not sure if this is the right section to ask this.
I'm looking for some option, or tweak, that lets me reduce the wifi power emission (electrosmog).
I know that it can be done in Windows, for many wifi cards, where you can select the power level for the outgoing signal.
I cannot find anything similar in Android.
Thanks for any suggestion.

You may need special kernel for it which isn't exist for now... I know it was once available at Linux kernel several years ago but people get troubled with power management system because of Wi-Fi issues related to low power applies.
I don't know linux kernel still allows you to lower power because kernel was fixed after that issues and don't know too how that fix done which way(removed or optimised? probably removed).
Just look up google for linux terminal codes, i haven't found anything as i guess...

Phone won't wake up from standby?

Hi All
Not sure if this is potentially a general problem or specific to my build of WM6..
I'm running Dutty's v2 of WM6 - all seems stable on the whole....
Except that if the battery power is at, or below 50% remaining.. when the phone shuts itself into standby & is left for an hour.... No matter what i press.. power button, tapping the screen etc... the phone refuses to wake up....! - (When the battery IS fuller... it DOES spring to life when you tap the power button on the side.)
The green signal light DOES remain flashing all the time though...
Even calling the phone doesn't kick it up the ass.... I just hear the ringing in the earpiece of my land line.. & the tytn remains silent!!
The only way to sort it out is to remove the battery & reboot - pretty crap!?
So is this a BUG? - & if so, something specific to Dutty's build on WM6, OR is this something more generic that other people with different OS's like 'Black' 2.5 or 3.01 are ALSO experiencing???
Your kind answers welcome.
Cheers,
Al
WOW, do a search. This is almost as bad as asking if WM6 is available for Hermes.
Thanks for your POINTLESS ANSWER!
I did a search, & all that is found is page after page of dross, with people saying "it might be this, it might be that... is it the radio version..? is it your storage card, is it too many apps in the background!? BLA BLA BLA
To save time... for all you no-patience types....
WM6 Dutty v2
My radio version: 1.40
storage card 2GB Sandisc... 250MB left, with Tom Tom 6 & European maps... only activated when manually run.
Any background programs like weatherpanel? - NONE
DO you know the Answer or not - YES or NO!?
Don't waste my life with cocky responces. - If there is a definitive SOLUTION, state it, instead of your pompous snobbery!
"Your kind answers welcome." - What's the point of even being polite to you people?

There are other threads on this matter, but no solution has been found yet.
All the WM6 roms I've tried have had this problem.
For me it happens 2/3 times a day if I set IMAP mail to check periodically.
I had this problem with every WM6 rom too. I solved it by disabling the auto download/sync with my IMAP email accounts. I set it to 'manual' to check for email, which is a pain, but my 8525 wakes up every time now. I used to have this problem several times per day regardless if I was going through different singal networks (as people said it was that problem)...also people said it was my memory card, it was not as it happened regardless if that was installed or not.
Once I stopped autodownloading and syncing of my IMAP email, all was fine. i hope this works for you.
This seems like a fairly major bug!
Activesync works fine. Shame you can't sync two exchange accounts over the air! It would be interesting to set up an IMAP server and look at the logs to see where it is getting stuck.
I found also that the mSD card made no difference.
Hmmm
Interesting, i DO have my Pop3 account to auto send/recieve every 10 mins.. I've just disabled it... & shall see what it does...
So this is looking like a WM6 generic bug.... I wonder if Black's 3.01 which is based upon a slightly newer core build from M$ has addressed this.... But i'll wait a while from updating my rom... as it seems pretty stable in all other areas.
Al
P.S . Thanks for the polite & informative replies!!!
It has the same problem and so does the latest LVSW.
It's a bit of a bummer actually! Not sure what to do about it!
Very common problem - no answer
This is the same problem that MANY of us have. I've read its possibly due to the Sandisk microcards (a Kingston is supposably more reliable,) but most people are reporting its due to email checking while the device is in Standby. It has NOT been corrected with the Latest ROMs or OS's. Good luck - if you find an answer let us all know!

Damn, where did I put that silver platter....
I think that mSD cards can cause the problem, but I've had it happen many times without a card in the slot.
My gut feeling is that something goes wrong while checking the IMAP mail. Remember that the machine is woken by a notification and is in a state where it is on, but the screen and sound are off. I have noted that activesync is much quicker at checking than IMAP. Perhaps it takes too long sometimes and thus becomes stuck.
By any chance are you locking the phone with 'Device Lock'?
My phone (on any version of WM) would lock up at least once per day.
I found that if I stopped locking the phone using device lock and just switched the phone into standby with the power button, it hasn't locked up since.

On my phone I have 100% connected this issue to leaving the WIFI on and letting the phone time out into standbye. While I do have the Taiwan 2GB Sandisc mSD card - the problem happens regardless of if the card is in the phone or not. The problem only ever occurs on my phone if I have the WIFI on and let it timeout. If the WIFI is disabled, it NEVER has this issue and if I manually put the phone into standbye (tapping off button) it almost never has this issue. With WIFI left on, I can expect my phone to freeze on average once or twice a day!
Now there may be many issues that cause this with differnt phones but this is what happens on my phone.

I don't have the problem anymore, but when I did have it using different ROMs it was always when it timed out with WIFI on. Having read all the threads on the subject I to think there are several things which are causing it for different users.

I saw the same problem on my old Prophet. The solution for that phone and it's AKU2.0 ROM was to set backlight and standby timeouts to the same value.
I've had this with:
WiFi off;
Email off;
Device lock off;
Power at 90%+.
And all of the above at the same time, hehe.
With computers, it can be something that appears completely unrelated, that causes the problem.
As an example, I once built a new machine (I've been a custom system builder for more years than I care to remember), that kept coming up with hard drive errors, massive hard drive failures, loss of partitions, you name it. Even with known good hard drives.
I changed the IDE controller. I changed the motherboard. I changed the memory. I changed the CD drive. I changed the powersupply. With all known good components.
Same errors.
I gave up, and went to bed to sleep on it (usually a very good idea when a problem is wearing you down).
In the morning, I realised that the only thing that I hadn't changed at least once, was the graphics card.
Yep, it was the graphics card that was persistently producing hard drive errors, hehe.
My guess is there's some sort of driver incompatibility (some companies have a very bad track record regarding their competence at supplying decent, compatible drivers), or clash with a couple of otherwise unrelated apps. Something like that.
My gut feeling hollers ATi driver (I think I have had more headaches caused by ATi drivers the last approx 20 years, than everything else put together).
Could well be wrong, but might give someone an area to start looking.

My Hermes has the same problem and only when the screen/buttons are locked. I will try to set the timeouts as you suggested and see what happens. It was not a problem in Black 2.0.
Hi
Regarding Wifi... I usuall have it off, unless i'm using it.... so it can't be that.
I disabled my mail account auto connection last night... & left the phone....
Now it WAS plugged into the charger, but upon clicking on the phone power button this morning, it DID come out of Standby!!!
However... as i noticed already, when the battery is full or over 50% it did seem to want to come out of standby.... only when the battery starts to run low, did it refuse to wake up...
I'll let the power run down today.. & let standby activate..... now that the email auto connect is disabled, if it DOES still fail when the battery is getting low... then we know it is something to do with the power...
If it DOES come on, with low power, then it will point towards the email problem...
"set backlight and standby timeouts to the same value." = Well this is an interesting little quirk..... I'll give it a try too. - Cheers
I'll let you know.

Most functional Android rom

I just flashed my Kaiser with Fat Free Froyo RLS5. I really like the Android OS, but the lack of functionality is bothersome. I can't type into the Google search bar that is on the desktop, the camera doesn't work and, worst of all, the USB to PC data connection is inoperable. These things along with some other minor things like the fact that I can't change the volume of the alarm clock make me want to try a different flavor. I've only been using it for about an hour and already found all these problems so I can image that there are more.
All I am looking for it a version of Android that will allow me to use the camera, browse my SD card from my PC, and has a working WiFi. Speed is also a concern.
If I could get some suggestions I would be appreciative.
Thank you.

Camera not working is related to your kernel/radio rom. Also you could use not so super froyo if you want the same with more features. If you want more speed I suggest a Cyanogen based rom as these are the fastest currently. I suggest changing your kernel to l1qu1ds latest .32 kernel via the thread that is stickied at the top.
USB to pc is not working through my computer right now but adb is at least. What I do for data transfer is just use System on NAND and Data on SD and use a card reader for the data.
Lastly, remember that android on the Kaiser is by no means perfect and is still more or less of a thing to be like "Look what my old phone can do!" thing. If you want everything perfect then Windows mobile has that already. Otherwise if you want a cooler newer OS on your phone then its going to take a little time for us. We have come a long ways but not all the way there yet.

the search bar will work if you download google search from the market, it was removed since it can be installed from the market, fat free is fully functional you just have to work to get it going out of the gate, now in contrast not so super froyo is ready to go from the get go

USB to PC works perfectly in linux It works for me on windows 7 too, but you just have to wait a long time (maybe 2-5 mins) for the computer to recognise it.
To change the alarm volume just roll the jog wheel while in that menu (or press whatever buttons you have assigned to volume up/down)

That part really isn't a big deal; I probably would never even use it. It was just one of the many small glitches I was noticing during normal use. Things like there being no way to bring the phone back from sleeping except the power button (not even opening it!). At one point, when it is just sitting on my desk, the screen turned white and the phone was completely unresponsive. I had to hard reset it. They keyboard works except when dialing a number where it seems completely random.
If there is a workaround to these things, I'm fine with doing some personalizing, but if not, I would like to know if there are flavors that don't have these kinds of issues.
I think I will try Cyanogen like you suggested and see if I like it any better.
Thanks again for the help.

the white screen is a known issue apparently overclocking improves this
White screen is present when the system didn't draw the screen before it power up.
When you overclock the system is faster so it spend less time to draw the interface.
Sometimes you have with screen when the system sleep but it can't resume because the main app crashes.

This changes "Ring volume" regardless of what I have opened.
Thanks for all the input, everyone.
I have tried four different Android builds now and I haven't gotten a USB data connection with any of them. I noticed that one of them had a Network option, as though I might be able to browse files of computers on the network which would solve my problem. Unfortunately, that particular build just says "Error" when I try to turn WiFi on.
Is there an android app I can install that will allow me to transfer files between my phone and a PC? That is really the number one priority right now. To test these Android builds I have been reverting back to WMP every time I want to try a different one because I need to put the androidinstall.tar onto my card. I tried loading a bunch of different ones on the card to avoid this, but I get "Permission denied" when I try to rename a file in the andboot folder.
Thanks again.

I have a kaiser with froyo kernel 2.6.32 date 9.9.2010 I have overclocked with atools to 500 mhz and also overclocked the GPU, battery is standard setting. My radio is Neon 1.65.24.36 Together with thoughtlesskyle`s (thank you!!) fat free release 5, i have a very stable situation here. I have to admit i am not a heavy user. Merely phonecalls and sms (or whatsup) and sygic navigation software . I only have to reboot once a week. I am not sure why, maybe because i use cachemate once a while.
For connection between pc and kaiser i use SD Share Dual Mount. It works perfectly. I had flashed the latest kernel(s) of l1q1d because of the alleged stable reboots. I am sad that i did not have stable reboots, it got stuck and i had to reinstall my apk`s again. And most important for me, the SD Share did not work with the latest kernel(s), thats why i reverted back to the 9.9.2010 one.
As for the white screen, it only happens to me if my kaiser goes asleep and i awake it immediately. If i take some seconds between asleep and awakening, it`s okay.
I have to thank many people here to be able to use my kaiser like i bought it yesterday or so. Maybe someone can try my settings and profit from it, like i do.

[Q] How debug the phone?

Hi. This is my first post here, so please excuse my naivety.
I have a stock phone running a few basic apps. Not many apps are ever running simultaneously, and I don't believe they are particularly CPU hungry.
My phone is usually very unresponsive. I often miss incoming phone calls whilst waiting for the touchpad to respond! Opening a new app can take around a minute! However, sometimes the phone works normally. I can see no pattern connecting the problem to a particular app or any updates. The problem comes and goes as it pleases.
Using an app called OS Monitor I can see that the CPU typically runs below 15%, with Android itself running between 5% and 12%.
The only clue I have is in the log of OS Monitor I can see literally HUNDREDS of errors per second, almost all of them look something like this:- [TSP] ID: 0, z:84, w: 1 (the numeric values vary).
Are these errors significant, and would they explain the phone's unresponsiveness? How do I find out what these errors mean?
How do I go about debugging the phone, and what do I look out for? I don't have root access to the phone.
My background is in programming, so I know how to debug Windows apps. And a long long time ago I used to do assembly language programming using embedded controllers and in circuit emulators - but I don't have any kit now, and it certainly wouldn't work with today's technology! I really don't have a clue where to start with Android phones!
Ideally I want an easy means to discovering the cause and solving the unresponsiveness. Suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Alan
If you're running a stock rom, it sounds very unstable. I don't know much about debugging OS's, but from the little I know about "general" android, I think you have 2 choices........
The first choice will have many members here shaking their heads and tutting...lol but I will suggest it anyway.......
You could try connecting your phone to your computer and using Samsung Kies software.....there is an "emergency restore" function that *may* recognise that there is a problem with your phone and do something about it....it's basically like doing a factory reset.
The other option is to do what most of us here have done.....root your phone and flash a custom rom....it sounds like a custom rom will be MORE STABLE than your stock rom (there's not many folks who can say that lol).
You do have one other option that I can think of......return the phone to your retailer and get them to send it away for assessment and repair......
There may be other options that I don't know about, maybe somebody else can tell you what they are....
Anyway, good luck...I'd personally recommend the custom rom route....a lot more satisfying.....

Rebuilding Pure Android v6.0.1 (Please help!!!)

Greetings,
I'm trying to rebuild an Android v6.0.1 from a old/leaked rom I stumbled upon for an older Samsung phone not widely supported.
I'm running into a few problems and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction regarding what I am missing.
Stuck in "Factory Mode"
I've been battling this issue by doing various compare directory / compare files to try to track down the issue.
From what I've found so far, supposedly if I jump into /efs/FactoryApp/factorymode and change the value from OFF to ON, it will fix the problem; but it's proven to not be that simple.
I've found some settings floating around /system/csc/ that look like good places to stab at, but every attempt playing there has caused the phone to bootloop.
Additionally, there are two directories in /system/ that don't appear on the retail rom; /system/factory/ and /system/data/. Deleting these seem to do nothing, but don't result in boot loops, so I at least consider it a win killing these.
Google Contacts won't sync
This one is driving me almost mad. I can't figure out how to get this one working.
I feel like there are services I am missing. Android properly lets me see that I can sync the contacts using the latest version of Google Contacts, but it can't seem to actually do it.
- GoogleContactSynAdapter is installed in /system/app/ with the correct permissions (I've tried several different versions of v6.0.1)
- mcRegistry is using a known working file set with other roms; but neither the original mcRegistry nor ones from different roms work.
- Android Download Manager is installed in /system/priv-app/ and seems to be working with just about everything else.
Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Voice all sync correctly, though they won't, for any reason, hit contacts without producing an error.
Power Button powers off immediately
This is another one that's boggling my head.
/system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl properly defines the power button (button 116) as "Power", but it doesn't produce the power menu. HOWEVER, I can map to the Power Button with any of the various button remapper apps --- I just can't map it to the power button. I'm really confused where this menu is being pulled from or where the "Power" function is being defined at.
Lock Screen won't start
I haven't really started tackling this problem as I've been trying to track down the other issues for the better part of the last two weeks.
I feel like something massive is missing and wanted to see if anyone had any immediate thoughts why the lock screen won't work. Any kneejerk thoughts welcomed on this one.
---
Any help for tackling any of these problems would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Speed Sensitive Volume Control via Tasker + Root

I've been playing around with speed sensitive volume control via Tasker (and ROOT is necessary for this function) on my Dasaita PX6 Android 10 MTCE_HA_V3.56_1, and I think I've reached a point where I'm satisfied with the functionality. Since it took me a while to compile the information needed to achieve this, I thought I'd share it for others who may be interested.
Basically, you need to create a looping task that reads GPS and converts it to MPH. You then need multiple profiles that will monitor the GPS loop task and increase the volume when they become active at a certain speed (and decrease it when no longer active). The trick, however, is that in order to actually change the volume you will need to use a broadcast intent to the MCU (which will require ROOT to work properly).
I found a list of key codes that work for my particular unit posted here by Serge_SM: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67855471&postcount=17 I'm not sure that this list is exhaustive, and different MCU versions may use different codes for the various functions, so you may need to do more digging if the volume tasks do not work on your headunit.
I have attached the prj.xml file so that you can simply import it into Tasker as a project. From there you can take a look at it and see how it works (and also make any tweaks that are necessary for your own needs).
I found that the volume transition points were best when placed just under various cruising speeds to avoid hysteresis issues, but you can adjust the speed points as you see fit. A two-second delay on the GPS loop seemed to work well without too much of a delay and while not being a huge burden on the system
As always, with stuff like this, there are no guarantees that it will work for you and you try it at your own risk, but hopefully this will be helpful to others out there!
