Help restoring /config partition - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was using stock 6.0.1 .223 firmware with unlocked bootloader and TWRP 3.2.1-0, I was going to try the BORETS ROM, so I did a TWRP backup of everything [data, system, config, etc], I didn't like the rom, so I went to TWRP and restored, but I get Error: unable to wipe config, I restored everything but the config partition, and now the SIM 1 does not work, how can I flash it back?

The same happened to me and I get "failed to mount config" I have been looking for it I couldn't find the files of that partition so the device stuck on loading the ASUS logo..please let me know as soon as you solve it

I solved it by flashing the .raw of the same version without wiping the data on the Asus Flash Tools, good luck.

Config partition
Can anyone help me about this problem? I still got stuck at logo after flash .raw file w/o wipe data.

Hi
First lets get you on a proper recover:
Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2000138 and download the right version. I would suggest using CWM_RecoveryTOUCH_v6.0.3.0_N7100.zip. Download that and then copy that to your ext sdcard. then put the sdcard back in you phone and then boot back into recovery and then flash the new recovery from ext sdcard. Reboot and profit!! :highfive:
If that do not work, get this file ODIN-KashaMalagaTOUCHCWMRecovery-V6.0.3.0.zip from same thread and flash that through ODIN.
reboot annnnd Profit!! :highfive:
Now that you are on propper recovery you can flash anything.. Happy Flashing!!
Ps: DO A BACKUP OF EFS PARTITION!!! I am not JOKING! IT CAN SAVE your Phone! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2389426 Just google invalid imei note 2 and you will see.. Anyway hope this helps. :fingers-crossed:

Can't root after latest firmware update :(

Hello guys, i have an a5 2k17(sm-a520f), i flashed the latest firmware for the phone after being stuck in a bootloop(ksa firmware)
And the problem is that i tried many root methods like cf auto root which after flashing it the phone asks me to factory reset (no other options after booting)
And the cf auto root package generated by firmware.mobi gives nothing (not working i guess)
Also tried to flash the twrp recovery and then flash the supersu zip file after and i get the same messege i that verification failed and i have to factory reset, any help or ideas please?
Thank you

Flash latest firmware then wait for the blue android screen that says installing updates etc etc...
After that screen immedietly boot into download mode and flash twrp then restart and again immedietly boot into twrp

I don't have any lags or micro lags on my device at all and have flashed the zip.

HIGHLY unlikely considering it is encryption itself which causes lag. An unencrypted device isn't going to introduce lag.
It is more likely root has caused the issue.

I was using your patch before I found this trick and it was lagging in lock screen with the patch and magisk.
After that I tried supersu still lags in lock screen. (because it's unencrypting phone like your patch)
Then i tried only magisk without any verity disabled force encrypt disabled patch.
And bum! no lock screen lags no verity error.
I have the same problem. I stitched A520FXXU2BQK1 firmware. (latest). After that The vendor disabled recovery. And now it is impossible to stitch others. For this reason I cannot stitch Twrp, Cwm and root.
Recovery msg : Only official released binar ies are allowed to be flashed (RECOVERY)
I also tried to stitch the previous firmwares to return root and twrp.. It did not help. I tried to return on the android 6 - he is not stitched

Root issues in Oreo

I'm installing twrp but whenever i try to boot into twrp all my data is wiped and twrp is unable to mount it
"Could not mount /data and unable to find crypto footer"
I need to manually change the filesystem and then again change to ext4 for twrp to mount data.
Main issue is i want to use snapchat and for that i need to boot into OS, login into snapchat and then root in twrp
but again as soon as i boot into twrp my data partition is not mountable. I have flashed no_encrypt_no_verity.dm_ashyx to disable dm-verity.
Flashed various twrp version from 3.0 to 3.2
Also did a clean OS flash from odin but still no luck.
Any suggestion and help will be appreciated.

As soon as i boot in twrp, data is not mountable. So I then go to
wipe-->adv wipe-->(select data partition)repair or change partition-->change partition format-->fat
TWRP then wipes it to fat filesytem, then i change it to ext4 (which is readable by OS)
then only data partition is mounted.
Afterwards I flash no-verity-no-encryption_ashyx and RMM patch
Boots normal to OS
Again boot to twrp i get error unable to mount /data
I had this issue in nougat but it used to happen only once. After flashing patch i used to not get this error repeated

Hope it works I can t think of something else.

Which twrp version are you using?
Try...
The universal "no verity opt encrypt".
Magisk for the above, or safetynet evasion.
Backing up snapchat in /data/data/ and /sdcard/Android/data/, and load the backup. By PC or external sdcard, or load the backup later.

Tried the universal version for samsung and applied RMM patch, unfortunately same issue again.
I think that this has to do with SEpolicy. In nougat i used to get a small red warning at the edge of screen while booting to twrp. That time i did not face this
issue. Now I dont get any warning..boots into twrp with data partition corrupted.
I dont know, ive tried everything possible but no luck.
This is how I did and it works on my A320FL:
1. I installed Ashyx's version of TWRP via odin.
2. Boot into TWRP and "Format Data" from "Wipe" menu.
3. Flash SuperSu.
4. Flash Ashyx's patch.
5. Reboot phone(into recovery again).
6. Update TWRP with McFy's version.

So I think is something concerning the MM firmware that was not fixed with the N and O updates, 'cause I bought it very close to his launch too. I solved it by flashing a custom rom, so I think the problem was in official MM firmware or something went wrong in the OTA updates

At this point the only advice I can give you is to do a full wipe including "Internal Storage" (if you didn't) before flashing with Odin.
I really don't guess it will solve the problem on an official firmware, but there's no harm in trying

No matter what you try at this point you're data will always encrypt and will need to be formatted. TWRP will always reset.
This requires a whole different route and needs you to edit system files.
I'll get back to you with details.

This method requires intermediate knowledge of Windows and CMD commands....I've tried to simplify it and hope it is easy enough to go through
The files that need editing are the ramdisk fstab files.
Basically you are going to unpack boot.img, edit the files and repack it.
Here's how you do it:
In windows...From the firmware, open the AP file with WinRAR. Extract boot.img.lz4 and save it to your desktop
Go here https://github.com/lz4/lz4/releases/download/v1.8.2/lz4_v1_8_2_win64.zip
Extract it then just place your boot.img.lz4 to directory of lz4
Next open up cmd as admin and cd to the location where lz4.exe is located
In cmd type lz4.exe boot.img.lz4
This will unpack the lz4 file.
Now download http://www.mediafire.com/file/93a3f4bikaxh6tj/MTK_Extractor_V2.6.3.zip
Just open exe go to boot tab select the unpacked boot.img
This will extract the files you need and it will create folder called "initrd" and it will contain the contents of boot.img.
Make sure you have Notepad++ installed to edit the files.
Go to the MTK folder where your files have been extracted
Right click Fatah.goldfish and select open with Notepad++
Next find the phrase ",encryptable=userdata"
Delete it
Close the tab in Notepad++ and click to save
Back to MTK folder and right click fstab.ranchu. Open with Notepad++
Find the phrase ",quota,forceencrypt=/dev/block/vdd"
Delete it
Find the phrase ",encryptable=userdata"
Delete it
Close the tab in Notepad++ and click to save
Back to MTK folder and right click fstab.samsungexynos7880. Open with Notepad++
Find the phrase ",verify"
Delete it
Find the phrase ",forceencrypt=footer,quota"
Delete it.
Close the tab in Notepad++ and click to save
Next, go back to the MTK program and press the repack button
This will create your new boot.img file
Go back to the MTK folder. You should see your old boot.img file saved as "boot-old.img" and your new file as "boot.img"
Install 7-zip
Back to MTK right click your new boot.img. select 7-zip then select "add to archive"
This will open up another window. Simply select "tar" from the dropdown menu for "Archive format"
Press OK
This will create a new file "boot.tar"
Flash this via Odin with phone in Download mode
The boot will now be patched and you can set up TWRP as you need.
This whole process will need repeating if a new AP is flashed

Ended up in a bootloop during restoring twrp backup

I was on pixel experience rom and wanted to try out other pie based roms on my device. So i backed up all the partitions from twrp recovery and went on with flashing arrow os. But when i wanted to revert back to pixel experience by restoring the previously made backup, it showed that system partition mount was failed during the restore process. So i tried booting into twrp again but the device just bootloops. I tried entering recovery mode by using volume up and power combo. But twrp starts bootlooping after the logo appears on the screen. I also tried flashing redwolf twrp but it also fails to boot. Any help would be appreciated.

if you ever stuck in such situation again!

power off the device from recovery
boot recover again (fastboot boot recovery orangeFOx.img ) and FLASH the custom ROM you wanted to!
you will be fine!

I experienced that too.. i think some ROM does something to vendor partition, example:
1. You backup data,system,boot etc...lets say u do that on "A" rom..
2. then u install "B" rom, and u like not satisfied on that..
3. Then u wipe everything and restore your "A" backup..
if you do that like what i said.. you will ended with bootloop or just stuck on mi screen..
I found a workaround ..
You just need to re-flash the "A" rom (clean install), then wipe everything again , and restore your backup..
? Sorry for my english btw
In my 16GB model, when I did a recovery through TWRP, I had a bootloop problem.
However, 'OrangeFox Recovery' does not cause this issue.
And, SD card with 'exFAT' format is recognized as normal.
I strongly recommend.

Swiped "allow modifications" in TWRP, now bootloop

First unlocked the phone.
Then flashed and booted to twrp-3.3.1-2-grus-20190609.img
I believe here I swiped "allow modifications".
Then installed:
no-verity-opt-encrypt-6.0.zip
magisk-v19.3.zip
Rebooted and... Stuck on boot logo, then restarts back to recovery.
Is there a way to solve this without losing user data? I have a pattern/fingerprint set and some important data that could not be backed up (like google authenticator).
Any way to restore system perhaps?
Short update...
I have downloaded latest stock ROM for Miflash. Extracted it and did this:
Code:
fastboot flash system system.img
After this it booted fine, but none of sensors work: no proximity, no camera, no wifi.
Mobile data works, but no calls.
I have tried both roms, Global and Europe.
If I reboot it, it won't boot, goes to stock recovery, not OS.
However, if I boot to TWRP in fastboot:
Code:
fastboot boot twrp-3.3.1-2-grus-20190609.img
It actually boots in to OS again. Still no sensors.
I have tried to wipe everything and flash a fresh ROM via EDL mode and Miflash, but it asks me to log in to xiaomi account and then says I am not authorized.
So the device is kinda bricked now.
What next? Can I flash some other partition to get this going again?
Same problem here ? you did it ?

Same problem here ! you did it ?
I could not get it working.
When I flashed system.img, wifi and sensors did not work.
This could be solved by flashing persist.img, but that partition is write protected.
I could not reflash the ROM with MiFlash because it asks to log in and says my account is not authorized.
However I searched around and found a cracked version of MiFlash on GSM developers forum that actually worked (in fastboot mode, not EDL).
I have reflashed it completely and, while I lost all of data, wifi and sensors work.
I then tried to restore only data from backup, but it crashed the system again.
So I had to reflash it again and install, configure and restore data for over 100 apps, manually. Two full days wasted.
I have looked for a reliable way of restoring individual apps and data from TWRP backup, but there seems to be no convenient, reliable and free way. Possible (not easy) with some linux scripting, but it's not how I roll.
But hey, I have root and adaway now, so no ads. Worth it.

Why did you flashed no-verity-opt-encrypt-6.0.zip ?
