Question about going between OOS and custom roms - OnePlus 5T Questions & Answers

So, right now im on ob4 firmware and on the custom rom train. I want to try out OOS 5.04, can I just download the firmware, wipe everything and flash it? is it ok to downgrade back and forth like that? Can I flash nougat if I want to? Thanks for any help.

First: the firmware is already contained into the oos zip.
I have successfully reverted from custom to oos by formatting in fastboot first, then flash oos.
When I tried to wipe in recovery and then flash oos the os booted but stayed forever in the 'just a sec' initialization. Maybe a problem with encryption, maybe I forgot to disable pin secret before flashing, I don't know. Fastboot format did the trick.
As of Nougat, I think same procedure with format should work.
If you look into the OOS beta topic there is a guide to flash coming from custom.

Here's a screenshot of about screen.
Proof of root on oreo
Hi.Can I update my firmware if bootloader is unlocked and root is installed? If so, how?
You want to upgrade to oreo? Or just update your current firmware?
Just wondering. Are phones updated when the bootloader is unlocked?
Yes you can update phones with unlock bootloader's, if you want official updates you need the stock recovery, the twrp flashable roms i made will give you stock recovery.
Where is the stock recovery to take?
Flash any of the twrp stock roms i made and it will give you stock recovery.
Download firmware from the official website of asus, install it via twrp
and I get stock recovery with the new firmware???You don't know when to do an unofficial unlock of the bootloader?

Hi. I flashed the stock rom you uploaded because I accidentally lost mine... aside from audio/video lag issues, audio from calls were also unable to hear. Will patiently wait for your stock rom with firmware files. thaaaaanks
Go into recovery and flash the official oreo zip this will flash firmware files and fix no audio/video lag issues.

If you flash my oreo zip with no firmware and boot it up, this will give you stock recovery, which you will need to flash the stock oreo zip , and ofcourse you will need to reflash twrp after.

Global OTA 9.5.4.0 + TWRP = fail

My phone has unlocked bootloader, TWRP, and is rooted with magisk. Got the OTA for (global) 9.5.4.0 last night - it downloads/de-crypts ok, reboots into TWRP, and then fails to flash. I also tried to flash manually via TWRP by locating the downloaded file, still fails. During the night, it rebooted itself (to try again I suppose), and my alarm didn't go off.
So here I am, late in work, wasting more "work time" to ask you for a possible solution
Go back to original miui recovery then you can update your miui successfully. After update, reflash twrp and magisk.

Sounds easy, but I don't know how to do that. Could you point me in the right direction?
you can't flash an OTA with TWRP
Flash recovery img with fastboot
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
then boot your phone
settings->about phone->system update->update
it will get in origin miui recovery and update system automatically
after update finished, reflash twrp and magisk
Thank you very much @jimandy60
With all the respect though, I would prefer downloading the file from a popular location. Is there any way to find this hosted somewhere else, maybe by Xiaomi?

Hello!
I got the same problem but instead to come here and ask for help I tried to solve myself. I downloaded the lastest TWRP version and the device was not going into recovering mode. Then I installed again the previous one without results. I downloaded the TWRP app from Play Store and trying to solve I made wipe data, cache and I am not sure but I think also choose wipe system. Now my phone is stuck on the fastboot screen. Does not start. Using ADB I installed back the stck recovery but the problem remains. Somebody can help me please?
reflash the full rom?
download&unzip full rom package, get in fastboot mode and run flash_all.bat

Help. Going back to stock rom from custom rom

Help. How can I go back to stock rom if im using custom rom right now with magisk and custom kernel. Can someone teach me the process of what needs to remove before flashing the stock rom. Do I need to remove the custom kernel that I installed, magisk and twrp? Sorry for bad english. Help will be appreciated
You dont need remove nothing
Only download XiaoMiFlash, download a stock rom https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/how-to/ota-v9-6-4-0-odlmiff-t3823913 (Fastboot) and unzip the file, Off the device and restart in bootloader, connect to pc and flash the rom
That´s all
Best practices should be followed - always backup your settings, data, photos & documents, anything else you do NOT want to risk losing with the partitions being possibly wiped clean with a fresh stock installation - a) onto a formatted mSD card and/or b) onto a PC's stoarge/data drive(s) ... just in case.
Then, you can dirty flash stock rom without wiping data; or, for best results, wipe it for a clean, fresh install (then, restore save data once it is rebooted & running smoothly, settled down)
I guess, being lucky, running stock Pie roms, not downgrading back to Oreo stock roms as the tricky partition_A and partition_B can be confusing to newbies just starting out to learn the ADB & fastboot basics, etc. Good luck !

Sorry, I've never used oos recovery. For oos recovery I'm one of the most incompetent users around. I even don't know how to get logs with oos recovery...
@xuser: please notify the moderators on answers belonging to your thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/help/upgrade-unrooted-enc-stock-oos-5-0-8-t3942790 but posted here. They can move that.
Mentioning me (as you have done) is best practice to get my attention.
You don't need to show bad habbits (the additional unpatient posting) to get my attention. The attention you get now is: please move that all to your thread. Thanx.

If you are unlocked, then you have 3 options:
1. Relock your bootloader - It will erase your userdata partiton (/data and internal storage [a.k.a. sdcard])
2. Flash via fastboot twrp 3.3.1-0 and then the official 9.0.3. Stock ROM - It will erase your userdata partiton (/data and internal storage [a.k.a. sdcard])
3. Flash via fastboot twrp 3.3.1-0, and use [url="https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3t/how-to/guide-cope-9-0-3-5-0-8-firmware-barrier-t3941164]the modded FW by nvertigo67 AS A TEMPORARY WORKAROUND[/url]

Going to try this step
OxygenOS
flash official twrp-3.3.1-0 and reboot to recovery (you can skip this, if you already use twtp-3.3.1-0, of course)
take a nandroid
(dirty) flash OxygenOS 9.0.x rom's flashable zip
without rebooting(!) flash
for Oneplus 3T: oxygenos-9.0.4-bl-km-5.0.8-firmware-3T.zip
for Oneplus 3: oxygenos-9.0.4-bl-km-5.0.8-firmware-3.zip
without rebooting(!) flash twrp-3.3.1-0 again
wipe cache and dalvik
reboot to system and enjoy OxygenOS 9.0.x!
Wish me luck!!
Hi to all,
Currently I am in the same situation of xuser_ but with a ROM and no encrypted data. Could I follow the steps mentioned by xuser (using the nvertigo firmware).
Thank you.

Your bootloader, radio and vendor should match whatever ROM you want to flash.
Basically you should flash and boot March stock first, set up and set pin
Download rom, twrp installer zip
Remove screen lock pin
Fastboot boot (twrp.img)
Factory reset
Flash rom + twrp installer
Reboot system
If you want to flash a 9 based ROM like carbonrom you'll have to format userdata and flash and boot August factory image then repeat the steps above
Either way you should learn the fastboot commands and do things manually, it comes in handy updating both slots if needed.
oh yea i got it figured out! now, if i go back to stock from a custom rom, using the stock March image, will i still get OTA updates or will i need to flash through the OTA images that are provided?

You'll need to relock your bootloader, just make sure you're full stock on both slots or you will brick your phone. I personally don't think it's worth the risk and just update through twrp or fastboot
