Your bootloader, radio and vendor should match whatever ROM you want to flash.
Basically you should flash and boot March stock first, set up and set pin
Download rom, twrp installer zip
Remove screen lock pin
Fastboot boot (twrp.img)
Factory reset
Flash rom + twrp installer
Reboot system
If you want to flash a 9 based ROM like carbonrom you'll have to format userdata and flash and boot August factory image then repeat the steps above
Either way you should learn the fastboot commands and do things manually, it comes in handy updating both slots if needed.

oh yea i got it figured out! now, if i go back to stock from a custom rom, using the stock March image, will i still get OTA updates or will i need to flash through the OTA images that are provided?

You'll need to relock your bootloader, just make sure you're full stock on both slots or you will brick your phone. I personally don't think it's worth the risk and just update through twrp or fastboot

Than i still have twrp installed.. (Tried this a long time ago..) and than i cant install the ota.. Is there a zip with the original recovery..? Retue
My recommendation usually is not to flash twrp at all. Just use fastboot boot when needed. Disadvantage is that you don't have it handy if you're not at your computer, and you need the cable any time you want to start twrp.
Original recovery is contained in the stock ROM archive. Just flash only recovery. You can take the command from any guide how to flash stock ROM. But you need the one that is delivered with your software version. That's why I recommend not to flash twrp, if you want to do OTA it can be a hassle to find the right original recovery.
When you flash the original ROM it will have the stock recovery which will bring back your ota ability. Stock recovery is flashed by, fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Factory images are universal for this device. All carriers are supported. Just flash the June factory image.
You can flash the boot, system, recovery, and vendor images through TWRP. Those same images can be flashed in the bootloader. Radio and bootloader images must be flashed in bootloader. Does that answer your question? If not, read my guide and see if that resolves your questions:

So when you install a new rom you don't need to flash the vendor image also? Because some ROMs say to also flash vendor image when installing a rom

This is covered in-depth with FAQ #9 of my link above. But in short, each monthly security update brings a new vendor image that must be installed. Each time your rom updates to a new month's security update, you need to install that vendor image. If you flash back to a previous month's rom, you need to flash that respective vendor image. Only exception is if your rom includes the vendor image in the rom zip.

Sorry one last question. I am on the latest security update stock, if I was to flash the latest AOSP extended on the latest security update all I would have to do is flash the ROM and gapps? But when the new security update is added to the ROM then I would flash the vendor image. Sorry if I'm asking to many questions but I don't want to run into a problem.

You're fine, ask away! Yes to both questions. Let's say the July security update is released for your custom rom. You would flash the July vendor.img then your rom and then that's it.

Sure? You're wrong: the mentioned link include only bootloader+modem that are coming with every OOS release.
There's no system partition, because that packages are built for custom rom users.
I used them for a long time, until I went back to modded stock.
Ps also full firmware include bootloader+modem partitions, otherwise you would get in hard brick especially with major updates.
Are you referring to a particular partition? What you mean for firmware?

Yes they do include that bootloader img i have tried flashing multiple boot images but i used a bootloader zip from. A dev that changed the setting of my selinux of bootloader from enforced to permissive in order to use magisk 14.2 with oos as magisk earlier didnt support enforced state.... That is only poossible to replace when you have a bootloader zip that include instructions to do so .. So the default bootloader zip will have that instruction as default values
Did you find any solution?

Recovery 2.51.617.32 or help

I've installed the deodexed Dev Rom 2.51.617.32 and I have received the OTA to Oreo, or how can I install Oreo in a developer.
Also I can't run the RUU or I'm making a mistake.

It won't install with TWRP.
You'll also need an untouched fully stock /system partition. Before rooting, and as soon as you install TWRP, you should make a backup of /system if you plan on updating through OTA
Here is the stock recovery for 2.51.617.32
It won't help if you don't have a stock system backup though (that you'll need to restore with TWRP before flashing the stock recovery), but you might be able to find one with a search.
If you are trying to run the Oreo RUU, you'll need to flash the firmware for it first. It's a known issue. The easiest way would probably be to run the 2.51.617.32 RUU, then you should be able to update from there via OTA
I am also on the deodexed Dev Rom 2.51.617.32. I want to go to LeeDroid, but I am not sure how. It looks like I need to be on Oreo. Is there a way to install Oreo manually, while keeping TWRP? Can I just flash the Oreo firmware through fastboot? I'm s-off and unlocked

No tutorial needed. You just need the stock boot.img. Put it into your adb/fastboot folder, then: fastboot flash boot boot.img
Do you need the stock boot.img? If so, tell me here what it says next to "OS" in download mode, and I'll hook you up with it.
Hey can i get the stock boot.img please!

Okay. What does it say next to "OS" in download mode on your phone? Let me know that and I can probably provide you with it.

Global OTA 9.5.4.0 + TWRP = fail

My phone has unlocked bootloader, TWRP, and is rooted with magisk. Got the OTA for (global) 9.5.4.0 last night - it downloads/de-crypts ok, reboots into TWRP, and then fails to flash. I also tried to flash manually via TWRP by locating the downloaded file, still fails. During the night, it rebooted itself (to try again I suppose), and my alarm didn't go off.
So here I am, late in work, wasting more "work time" to ask you for a possible solution
Go back to original miui recovery then you can update your miui successfully. After update, reflash twrp and magisk.

Sounds easy, but I don't know how to do that. Could you point me in the right direction?
you can't flash an OTA with TWRP
Flash recovery img with fastboot
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
then boot your phone
settings->about phone->system update->update
it will get in origin miui recovery and update system automatically
after update finished, reflash twrp and magisk
Thank you very much @jimandy60
With all the respect though, I would prefer downloading the file from a popular location. Is there any way to find this hosted somewhere else, maybe by Xiaomi?

Hello!
I got the same problem but instead to come here and ask for help I tried to solve myself. I downloaded the lastest TWRP version and the device was not going into recovering mode. Then I installed again the previous one without results. I downloaded the TWRP app from Play Store and trying to solve I made wipe data, cache and I am not sure but I think also choose wipe system. Now my phone is stuck on the fastboot screen. Does not start. Using ADB I installed back the stck recovery but the problem remains. Somebody can help me please?
reflash the full rom?
download&unzip full rom package, get in fastboot mode and run flash_all.bat
