Buying Google Pixel 2 XL in 03\2018 - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

So it's time to change my old phone to the new one. I want to buy Pixel 2 XL but I'm so frightened because this phone has launched with a poor screen quality. Did someone buy this phone in february or in march and could tell me something about Pixel 2's blue-shift, burn-in or grain?

I think the screen it's good I don't have a lot of blue shift, but I think you must pay attention to the 4gb of ram , I have 4 mobiles and 3 of them are 4 and 3 GB of ram and they suffer a lot on multitasking.
And now I have a one plus 5t with 6gb of ram and that's much better.
By the phones are , Google pixel 2 xl, s8+ , ipx .
But the rest you're be good with pixel 2 XL , speed , fast updates, by the way the android P its right on the corner

I purchased the pixel 2 xl 15 days ago and yes, it has blue shift, but no more defects or burn in. My aunt has a S8 and I'd recommend the pixel 2 over the S8.

In my opinion, blue shift is overrated. Burn in issues seemed to be solved. Only the first batch at launch seem to be affected. Plus Google gives you a 2 year warranty so that should give you some peace of mind.
My girlfriend has the iPhone X and my roommate has the Note8. I highly recommend the Pixel 2 XL over both the phones.

Agreed about the blue shift. Way over criticized. I only notice it when... I read someone post something about it then I go look, say to myself, yep, its there, then continue on like nothing at all.
However, if I was buying a phone right now, I would hold off until I can hold the S9+ in my hands. With most sites saying its just a refreshed S8+ I would prolly pass and stay with Pixel.

This phone is top notch. Switched from the S8+. No looking back.

I'll weigh in:
I just got mine last week (third week of Feb '18) via a Best Buy deal. The phone was built in Oct of '17. I was coming from a Note5 which I really loved.
Lots of things to like, a few things to niggle naggle about and a few things to really hate.
Likes:
Oreo 8.1+
Squeeze Assistant
Fingerprint reader gestures
Google Lens - It's amazing.
Camera. Just wow.
Lots of things you can customize without root (via ADB)... You can move the nav buttons around, etc...
Battery life is simply great. I get 4+ hours of screen time and can go 8+ hours while sleeping and only loose a percentage or two. It's quite amazing actually.
Dislikes:
Not a fan of the fingerprint reader on the back... to use it, you always have to pick up the phone... on other models where the reader is on the front, you can unlock the phone while it's flat on the table or work desk or whatever. Having it on the back does have some upsides though... so this one isn't a big deal.
Not a fan of the power button and volume keys all being on the same side and so close together... I find myself pressing one when I mean the other.
Rounded corners on the screens... seems like a good idea aesthetically but you actually loose a fair amount of real estate... for example, the status bar icons are moved in a fair amount to compensate for the rounded corners so you get a lot of black space to the left and right of the ends in the status bar... I would never sacrifice function for form like that. Dumb.
Blue shift. It's there... not a big deal but it's there.
Hate:
Extremely long charging times. Just to go from 90 to 100% is like an hour++. This is in NO way a quick charging phone.
No charging LED indicator. Boo. I did load an app for that but Boo.
No wireless charging. Boo and boo.
Double Hate:
Screen protectors are a nightmare with this device. I've never had such issues finding decent, inexpensive protector that doesn't curl, bubble, etc... and I can't find any quality tempered glass protectors. There are a couple liquid adhesive protectors out there but they cost 1 arm and 1 leg. Really?
I'm really hoping the charging time issue can be fixed in a future OS update. It seems that this started happening after the Feb '18 update. We'll see.

I was going to give mine to try an iPhone X and then to come back to pixel but i have felt in love with this device.. Blue shift exists a little bit but I had forget that issue.. I agree with the charging time that sucks from 90-100% but overall it's an fantastic device.. On mine i have deleted nav bar, i use only gestures and its a pleasure all this huge screen with these nice rounded corners..

Can you give some details on your nav bar deletion decision? Do you have to root for that? What launcher, Nova? How to you get your recents, back, home functionality and map them to gestures?

UPDATE: Oh, I guess in Nova you can just turn the nav bar off. Will it allow for all the proper gestures for recents, back, home?

Yes I am rooted. I am using nova launcher but it doesn't matter. I used all in one gestures app from play store. The nav bar hide automatically if you don't use it. You can set it on premesive mode threw app. But now i have deleted at all nav bar with an command on build editor and i use only gestures.
Here I made a video month ago how I had it and how will work. (now it's totally different )

Thx!

I purchased mine 3 weeks ago, it was produced in November 2017, and the screen doesn't have any of all the issues reported right and left.
It has a very slight blue tint maybe when you look at it at an angle... but you know what? My Galaxy S7 edge has it too. AMOLED displays HAVE blue shift, no technology is perfect.
I'm pretty happy with mine. I'm far from being your typical Google/Nexus/Pixel apologist, but after having Samsung flagship phones for years, I can honestly say the Pixel 2 XL is the best phone I've ever owned :good:
It doesn't have all the bells and whistles a Galaxy or Note has, but it works so great, without any issue. Everything with this phone feels silky smooth, without a single dropped frame. Everything you try to run looks "effortless" and easy for the Pixel. I'm amazed by that phone

You don't have to root to get rid of the nav bar. There is a Substratum theme that changes the nav bar to any size you want including 0. I found it here on XDA. I'll see if I can find it and link to it when I get home.
*edit
Here is a link for the nav bar height
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ne...-height-changer-android-nougat-t3447956/page1
and here is one I use to fix the lock screen swipe issue
https://www.xda-developers.com/fix-lock-screen-swipe-gesture-issues-android-81-oreo/

I just sold my 7 plus and received my pixel 2 xl yesterday. The blue shift isn't bad, it's only noticable to the person on the side of you looking at your screen. Screen quality doesn't seem bad but colors may be dull to some. There is a Oreo colorizer app that will force the display in wide color gamut mode which richens up the color. Google does offer a new vivid saturated display mode but that app works way better. Only thing I don't like is how Snapchat looks like poo.. which it does on every Android but yeah.. this is probably the best camera quality you will get on Snapchat Android due to visual core enhancing the photos which does a pretty damn good job!
On a cold rainy cloudy dark Washington day, camera doesn't look as nice as what my iPhone 7 plus would've took with it's camera..

played with a Pixel XL today

Went to local Best Buy today and the guy at the Google booth had black XL that he let me pay with for a good 15 minutes.
Quick thoughts: 1.The black looks really nice, like really nice!
2. A feature I haven't seen in videos, double tap the power button opens camera app imcredibly qyickly even with a locked phone. Makes my Note5 camera look slow.
3. He had the 32gb version with 21gb available, but he had quite a few photos and store demo software on it, I'd expect 23gb available out of the box.
4. It had pre-production software and Assistant was not fully functional on it.
5. Swiping down on the fingerprint sensor to bring down notification bar worked perfectly and I'm already in love with this feature.
6. It is very light, and much more comfortable in hand than my note5
7. Sweet lord it is fast and smooth in comparison to my phone AND more importantly my wife's S7 edge (snapdragon 820)
8. Snapped a couple of pics, under the fluorescent lighting and compared then to same pics with Note5.......PIXEL LOOKS BETTER!.
9. Size wise, it is just a pinch smaller than Note5, screen looks definitely better.
10. He was also carrying a 5x, there is obviously not comparison,in terms if screen and performance
That's what I can think of off the top of my head, typing this in Best Buy parking lot. Lol
Thanks for the info! - Man.... that's whetted my appetite

Obviously I need to see some reviews, and the price is something each individual will have to decide on for themselves, but I was impressed. I didn't order one yet, since I haven't decided if 32gb is enough (probably not), but barring some seriously bag reviews, this will be my next phone
Nice! I'm on the Google wait list :good:
If you guys have a Best buy near you, the guy specifically told me that this was not his phone, and it was given to him for express of letting geek's like me check it out if they asked. I don't know if all locations are the same, but the one here has a Google display with all their chromebooks, and an actual Google employee there that you can talk to.
I might check Best Buy out...thanks
this makes me so hyped that I preorded the 128GB quite black. Hurry up and ship!!!! lmao
Thanks for the info OP!

Looks better than my note5 which is getting something that looks like light bleed after a year. This is subjective, but it looked comparable to the S7 edge. I'm sure detailed reviews will tell us technically which one is better, but in Best Buys lighting, to my untrained eye, the Pixel looked at least as good as the S7. The colors looked good, it was bright, and the color saturation looked good to me, but Amoled screens are all I've been staring at for the last year. This may be because I'm not a fan of the edge screen, or it could have been because of the glare or distortion that it causes, but the Pixel screen looked "crisper" to me if that makes any sense. I can't point exactly to the reason why, everything just looked a little clearer to me.

Sorry, I can't compare it to the 6p, since I've never held one. Fits in the hand more comfortably than my note5 though. With the swipe function in the fingerprint sensor, one handed usability seemed great. I am a small guy, and the fingerprint sensor was easy to reach, and I was VERY impressed with how the phone felt
The main question is. How was battery life? Lol. Jk. But were you satisfied overall in your short time with it? Did it feel like a whole new android experience. Or just another phone? Thanks

double tapping the power button to open the camera is already a feature on the 6p. i use it all the time.
Double tapping the power button to open the camera is a standard feature on most AOSP ROM's on most phones.
I use it on my current Moto X Pure.
Works locked or unlocked. Been doing it this way for over a year now.

Is screen burn really an issue?

Do you guys think over the next year it could really affect the use of phone? I've never had any problems with screen burn in so I don't know much about it. Just wondering as I really love my XL, but I'll return it if it's going to be an issue later on. I do have a little burn now.
Thanks!

for me, its never an issue unless u look at it everyday and get bothered.
I just discovered it in my Pixel XL. I would have never noticed it until I did the gray screen test. In normal use, it just doesn't matter.

I tend to agree. However, is there a chance that it can get worse where it does become visible in normal use over the 2-3 years we will have the phone?

I have had more oled phones than I can remember. Every single one has had burn in my note 4 had it th worst. It was never an issue 99 percent of the time. It really is only noticed on very specific solid color screens and even then you don't really. My pixel XL had it I didn't even notice till I checked the other day .

IMHO the nav bar and status bar are the worst offenders. Using expanded desktop helps by keeping the icons off the screen except when you need them.

No no no. A lot of people are looking at this issue in an inverted way. Literally everything except the navigation bar and notification bar is burnt. With OLED black=off.
When looking at the grey image, the navigation bar stands out because it's not burnt. The buttons on the nav bar are burnt, and if you check, they will match the top 95% of the screen.

Your right. I was being lazy. It's the buttons and it drives me nuts. Immersive mode (expanded desktop) relieves the problem for me.

Good point. One that's perfectly obvious now that you mention it. The good side to that is that making the navbar dynamic should alleviate that issue. I've always preferred a dynamic navbar, and like you said, a dynamic navbar would cause the navbar to burn equally with the rest of the screen, thereby making the whole issue null and void. Burn navbar burn!

While that is correct, the navbar still is the problem. People wouldn't be complaining if the screen was degrading at a uniform rate.
I had the galaxy nexus. Man, that phone had some burn in... Same with the Samsung s3. My nexus 6 has burn in. For a long time I was trying to run inverse mode with just the navbar active to try to wear the pixels at a more uniform rate. That seemed to help though I stopped doing it long ago. That being said, my wife's note 8 isn't seeing any burn in after a month. Now, I am sure it will come eventually, but a week seems really quick.
I had a 6P for 2 years (on eBay sale now if interested) and saw no burn in. My Pixel 2XL is a few days old, and I don't see any burn in either. I keep my phone at 50% brightness, because anything above sgives me eye strain. Maybe that is a contributing factor to those getting burn in.

Beyond brightness, doing anything special? Immersive mode? I think the culprit on my pixel is Waze. Hours on end. I don't think everyday use like Facebook YouTube etc will impact my device as much.
I guess my eyesight must really blow because I don't see any burn-in/discoloration on the 2 XL that I've had for 5 days or on the Nexus 6 that I've had for over 2 years. No sense changing my prescription now.
I don't really notice burn-in but image retention. When I bring up the full-screen grey image i still see the navbar but it slowly goes away. Just to be safe for now, I downloaded navbar app from the play store. I changed my navbar to be white in mostly white apps like chrome or facebook. Makes it harder to see the nav buttons that are also white/shadow, but I know where they are.

This is what i'm thinking of doing too. Might be worth buying one to test for yourself and send it back if you don't like the 5T? It'll be interesting to read others users thoughts on this.
Sorry, I moved from galaxy s8+. Other than the camera, I am loving it!
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Hey I love the 5T...the Pixel XL is junk, well, at least the screen is. It has issues no doubt. 5T screen is better IMO. Camera, obviously not as good. Neither has an external SD Card?!?!?! Why!!!!!
Anyway, for the money, 5T is hard to beat honestly. Dev support is descent, but not like HTC or Pixel/Google phones.
I had an S8+ for 1 day. Of course, since you can't root without breaking everything like Android pay and Safety Net...no thanks. The S8+ is a near perfect phone, but their abillity to allow you to unlock the bootloader and customize...is nonexistent. Got rid of it. I'm in the US, so the exynos won't work in this country which does allow bootloader unlocking...ridiculous.
I've been an HTC fan for 8yrs now. Just sold my HTC 10. The camera on this OnePlus 5 is better than anything HTC has produced ever. The camera isn't that bad. The OnePlus takes photos as good as my daughter's iPhone 7 Plus. And that camera is no slouch. In fact, head to head, my photos are often better with the 5T.
Anyway...I can imagine the 6 and 6T are going to be a pretty nice. Snapdragon 845 already confirmed for the 6 in a few months they claim it will be released.
Otherwise, I'm not personally dropping $800+ on a new phone no matter who makes it. Which rules Pixel, Huawei, Samsung whatever, and Def iPhone garbage out of the picture. I never spent more than $500-600 on any phone the last 8yrs. HTC resell is pretty good, plus I would wait about 4-6 months after their premier release version to buy it and it is discounted.
Also, my HTC 10 charge port started smelling like burning plaster and wouldn't charge. I had to send it back, and it could take 4 months for them to "evaluate" the burning in Taiwan, then send it back to Seattle, where they say they might not even replace it. They just want to examine it. It is under their uh-oh warranty...so don't know WTF they even care what has happened to it, they will give almost anybody a replacement phone.
Oh well...saw further below that you got the 5T and are keeping it. Version 6 will be out by end of March...so, take it from there. So far, really like the OnePlus...just wish it had a slightly better camera and an SDCard slot.
I was using a Pixel XL for a year and pre-ordered the Pixel 2 XL on launch day.
I got my Pixel 2 XL on October 18th and used it for 2 weeks and there were a lot of good things about it that I liked. It only had a few issues that I could not overlook:
The screen was of poor quality. I'm not talking about unsaturated looking, either. It had harsh blue shift that was impossible not to see in normal day-to-day usage. It also had very poor picture quality when used in a dark room at low brightness. Like everything was too dark yet bright parts of pictures were very bright. Like the contrast of the screen was junk. This was also apparent when viewing pictures at full brightness, but only if I held up my Pixel XL next to it and compared the two. Again, very apparent at low brightness, not as much at normal brightness. Since I like to use my phone at night in the dark, this was a huge pain point. I had no burn-in or noticeable grain in the screen. I was worried moving from a Pixel XL with a quality Samsung panel to a Pixel 2 XL with a questionable LG panel would be a problem, and I was 100% correct.
The battery charging speed. This was something that the Pixel XL wasn't very good at, and I couldn't even get 1% per minute. The Pixel 2 XL was in the same boat, slow charging. Even slower than my old S7 Edge with a larger battery!
These two things were just too much to accept with a $950 device. I returned it to Google for a full refund. Bought the 5T 128GB model on launch day and received it on Black Friday. The 5T has a good screen (like the Pixel XL) and the fastest possible charging option. I also saved like $400 buying the 5T so I got a PS 4 Pro with the extra cash. It's been the best decision I've made since buying the original Pixel XL which was a great phone.

Do you have some camera samples from your S8+ that you could replicate with the 5T and share them with us ?

At first I got OnePlus 5T.. in this phone everything was great, except for camera. Camera is a complete disaster - I do not know how people can be taking decent pictures without optical image stabilization. In my case when you look carefully at edges - there was a blur. Tried many camera softwares - the phone simply can't take good pics without OIS. Based on rumors, OnePlus 6 doesn't intend to include OIS in the camera either. Which is sad, as camera modules are about $15 a piece.. likely OIS would be a few dollars more. So, in summary:
OnePlus 5T:
Pros:
- Everything about the phone, screen, performance, development community
Annoyances (not a deal breaker)
- Separate switch on the side of Do not Disturb, Silent, Loud mode. Why on earth this can't be done via volume keys (Mute -> Vibrate -> Loud) and perhaps few other modes?
- Fingerprint reader., especially in the middle of the screen. Mobile device makers are attempting to convince us that bio-metrics are safe, while even US government wasn't able to prevent breach of biometric data of its own employees..
- Mobile camera in the corner, not in the middle of the back panel - in place of a fingerprint. Sometimes camera is obstructed by fingers, perhaps it is just a matter of habit.
Deal breaker:
- Crappy camera with lack of optical image stabilization. No matter what software does via EIS - it is not the same
Outcome: OnePlus 5T returned.
Then - decided to get Pixel 2 XL, hoping that it would get better shots. What a disaster of a phone it is.. around 1,100 Canadian - that is on sale.
Pros:
- Perhaps camera, but in two days took some photos, they didn't look nice either
Deal breaker/disasters:
- Screen - non bright, cheap looking
- I also didn't like the curvy screen. No benefits, as the image is displayed on front of the screen, not on the curves. Only adds to ridiculous and unnecessary cost of the device.
- Screen edges - round. Maybe this is Google's "Style", but falls into a complete disaster category in my book. Even worse - initial version of the software had these roundish corners on top, and at the bottom had three white software keys on black background. Of course when the menu was on, lower corners were squared. When you look at combination of round above, and squared below - you feel like you are not seeing right, and time to visit a nuthouse.
- Even better - with the update to fix burn in issue - menu became lighter / grey color, with transparency - with white buttons. When you are hitting the soft buttons - your mind registers as if you are hitting background.
- Support.. Google won't admit that they include screen burn in issue as part of their warranty. But they do - it took > 10 minutes in chat with Google Support to squeeze out of them the simple confirmation that burn in is covered by the 2 year warranty. So if you are unfortunate to end up with Pixel XL 2 and can't squeeze the confirmation from Google - IM me, and I will gladly share the conversation transcript
- Even better.. when you tap on the phone while it is off (and on too) - it is making hollow sound in the middle, hollow surface is approximately 2./3 of the width of the phone (in the middle) and 3/4 of the phone vertically (in the middle). This gives a feeling of a very cheap and uneven device which doesn't feel solid.
Outcome: Pixel 2 XL returned..
But the phone is still needed.. I looked on Ebay - there are many brand new Nexus 5 and 5X for couple of hundred bucks.. Also, yesterdays hardware is dirt cheap brand new. E.g. Lg G4 is $120. Yes, G4s randomly die, not all of them can be rooted, but still.
Nexues run Camera NX.. Also, just realized, that before Pixels, Google used to publish their camera software without limitations to their own hardware. APK sites should have old versions of the software. When you are looking for older hardware, remember that Camera NX needs 64 bit CPU.
If you are still on the fence, good luck with the choice! And remember that if you do not need latest and greatest - you can get solid performers (models from a year or few ago) for 1/5th of their initial price.
You may consider the camera.
Went from Pixel 2xl to 5t.
I miss the dual front speakers
I miss the camera
5t charging speed is insane
5t battery is amazing
Do I regret it, hell no.

In hand the 5t feels slick and lighter than the 2xl. The 2xl I had it without a case and was able to grab the phone a lot better than I could with the 5t without a case. That being said yes both phone have fallen from my hands or from my lap when I get out of the car. The 5t is able to take a hit better than the 2xl. The 2xl casing cracked, the 5t casing only has scratches. Also, ive actually dropped the 5t in the bathtub of running water as I watched better call Saul while showering. I did Grab it quick but it was fully submerged. Phone still works. Sweet.
Didn't notice much screen size difference.
One other thing the lowest screen setting isn't low enough when laying in bed at night time, you'll need to download an app to make it lower. My wife has the pixelxl, her screen goes much lower than mine.
I grew up Google fan from original Nexus to Nexus 6p, pixel XL, pixel 2 xl. In an attempt to sell my slightly damaged p2xl someone offered me this new 5t in box with $300 cash in addition. I figured why not... I'm glad I did.
I stopped flashing ROMs due to always coming back to original stock with magisk.

Great, and regarding the screen quality / colors / contrast & black crush ?
I went from 5T to first gen. Pixel XL. Simply put, 5T camera is crap. I got a feeling that the problems with the camera wont never be fixed properly. If good quality photos are needed, I cant recommend the 5T.
Otherwise 5T is a great device and I liked it.
I'm switching from the 5T to a Pixel 2 XL (ordered with a good deal) just for the pure Android/fast updates and better camera. 5T is an awesome device specially for money.
5T is amazing. The biggest and pretty much only downfall is the camera between this and pixel XL 2, and I personally am talking from coming from the original pixel XL, which camera was also better there. If you can get past the camera, 5T is the way to go.

Also came from the 2 XL and I'm not one to try every flagship on the market before deciding which one to keep.
I had exchanged the 2 XL for defects twice. From touchscreen issues to dead pixel clusters. I eventually decided the display wasn't worth the price of the phone.
The blue shift is way over blown. Two of the devices I received had it and one didn't. It's not something that bugged me or noticed in daily use.
What did bug me was horrible brightness uniformity and graininess. And between receiving 3 different devices there were massive variations in display quality (color temperature, graininess, digitizer response). So it seems like buying one is like playing the lotto.
I miss the camera and the front facing speakers (no where near HTC m7,m8, m9 quality but better than the 5t).
It's a nice phone but it's not worth $1k.

I came from an original pixel to the 5T, yes the pixel camera was better but imo some pictures look more natural looking with the 5T camera. I guess it's down to personal taste. Low light photos the 5T isn't as great as the pixel but it's still a good camera on the 5T.
I came from the 2nd gen Pixel and would not hesitate to recommend the 5t. The screen on the 5T has better color saturation and higher max brightness. Scrolling/smoothness isn't quite as good on the 5T, but it flies just as fast. Dash charge is insanely fast. The camera on the 5T can perform just as well as the Pixel under the right conditions but I wouldn't count on it for every point and shoot situation like you can with the Pixel. I snapped the attached pic a couple of week ago and thought it turned out great with absolutely no editing. The Google cases were cool, but the OnePlus Ebony wood bumper is the best I've had on a phone and now that there's a sandstone white variant, it looks just as good without a case. The biggest reason for me to switch to the 5T was the developer community. Since you're on XDA I would assume you're in to ROMs and customization which has already exploded for the 5T only a month or so in and for the Pixel is pretty well nonexistent. Phones are pretty much expensive toys for me and the Pixel was way more expensive, offered a great experience, but was ultimately way less fun.

That's an awesome shot indeed, and a lovely looking dog
I think I've got a pretty rough idea of what I want in a phone, and sadly as of now, there is no such thing.
I'll probably be taking a 5T and see how I like it. I know the camera isn't gonna to be as good, but I've seen like every YouTube videos that exists on the subject in the past few days and I think the only way I can decide is to try by myself.
I will keep this thread updated when I'll be receiving mine if I indeed do take one, so that the people that are in such situation, having a supposed superb flagship and that are disappointed can find a bit of information switching to a supposed "worse" phone.

Any former Pixel/Nexus owners here?

Hello all,
I'm currently rocking a Pixel XL and I'm absolutely itching for an upgrade. I'm also a Project Fi user, which limits my choices on which phones I can use. I love the performance of my Pixel XL, along with the vanilla Android experience. Unfortunately, my Pixel XL purchase was a bit of a rushed decision due to me breaking my Nexus 5X the day before I took a road trip. I ran out to Best Buy and snagged this phone, which, while it's a great device, is a bit too wide of a phone for my liking. One handed use is a bit cumbersome. Not a dealbreaker, I don't regret my purchase one bit, but now that I'm looking to upgrade, I'd like to get something a bit smaller. Last year I helped a family member of mine phone shop and they landed on the LG G6. Even though it has a bigger screen than my PXL (6.0" > 5.5") it felt smaller in the hands, which I really liked. So, when Project Fi announced that the LG G7 ThinQ was coming to their network, I was naturally very curious.
Things that appeal to me about this phone
Headphone Jack (with the Quad DAC)
SD Card Slot
Loud Speakers
Bright Screen
Wireless Charging
Better Screen-to-Body ratio while remaining slightly smaller than my current phone.
Detractors
Skinned OS (No app drawer?)
Small(er) battery
Less-than-stellar Camera
Non-OLED screen
I would've pulled the trigger already but I'm also curious about the new Pixel phones being released 3-4 months from now. From leaked information it looks like the new XL will be too big of a phone, but the regular Pixel 3 is supposed to be nearly what I'd consider a perfect size (much like my N5X was). Other than that we don't know too much about the new phones to know whether or not they'll be worth waiting for but I'm willing to wager there will be a huge price tag associated with them. So I'm still very much on the fence.
So, I figured some input from former Pixel or Nexus owners who have moved on to this device would prove to be very helpful in my purchase decision.
Any input is appreciated, Thanks!
I have had the N5X, pixel, pixel xl, pixel 2 xl, and like you prefer AOSP. I have found the G7 to be acceptable through use of nova launcher with the companion app for Google now. I also like the ability to have themes, I have found a material black theme that is very well done and a whole lot better than the bright colors of AOSP.
The battery has been a little inconsistent for me but seems to have settled down, now easily getting me through a long day. The camera is no pixel, although the wide angle is neat. Overall I like the g7 over the pixel 2 xl or pixel, although my dream phone would be an essential phone 2 (assuming the problems with the ph1 were solved) as even the g7 is a bit bigger than I want.
As far as "unthemed" Android phones go, I had the Nexus S, Moto X, Nexus 4, and Nexus 6P before getting the G7. I was hoping to wait for the Pixel 3 or potentially the Motorola One Power with AndroidOne, but since the volume rocker on my 6P was damaged (and the battery life was declining fast), I grabbed the G7 deal on Verizon. One thing I will say is if I was not on Verizon, I almost certainly would have picked up a OnePlus 6 instead. That being said, to address your detractor points:
Skinned OS - the built-in launcher DOES have an app drawer version, it's just not set by default. Otherwise, I've been using Lawnchair V2 that has Google Feed integration without a companion app.
Small(er) battery - haven't had any problems with battery life so far; I usually end the day anywhere between 50% (low usage) and 20% (extremely high usage). However, I would be surprised if anyone was able to consistently hit two days between charges.
Less-than-stellar camera - I'm not very picky on the camera, but I have noticed it is just a hair slower to open than my wife's Galaxy S8 (using double-tap power button). Image quality is good; I'd say it's better than my 6P was. I never use the AI Cam. The wide-angle lens is neat, but I haven't found a lot of use for it in day-to-day pictures.
Non-OLED screen - I haven't noticed this as much as I thought I would, even with Ambient Display turned on. The times that I do notice the LCD display is just before bed, if the lights are all off and Ambient Display hasn't turned off (I set mine to turn off from 11:00pm - 6:00am), you can see some light coming from the black portions of the screen. Overall, not a dealbreaker for me.
I'll add a few more points regarding the skinned OS concern:
The phone app is the most annoying part of the skin. I miss Google Dialer, and it's actually an app I use very regularly.
Lots of bloatware. I disabled/uninstalled almost everything, and replaced a lot with Google's apps (e.g., Calendar, Messages).
Settings is another heavily modified portion of the OS. However, in this case, I actually like LG's tabbed settings; I think it's more intuitive to navigate.

Themes are a huge plus. The eye-murdering bright white "Material" design is getting old very fast. As for the camera, I'm not a huge picture guy, but I do still find myself quite impressed with my Pixel's camera whenever I snap a quick photo. Would you say that you don't quite have the same reaction when taking pictures with your G7?

Appreciate the detailed reply!
Looks like you've echoed much of what reviewers have said as well in regards to battery life and camera. As I stated above, Camera quality isn't os the utmost importance but I do really like a fast shutter speed and I enjoy when a regular picture I take comes out great thanks to the sensor in my Pixel. If the G7 isn't capable of this, that will be a bit of a letdown, but not necessarily a dealbreaker. Backlight bleed is kind of expected with an IPS panel, it shouldn't be much of an issue. I do like that it gets extremely bright for daytime use. I totally forgot about third party launchers, which would alleviate my concerns about the lack of an app drawer or anything else almost completely. It's disappointing to hear about the bloatware, but at least you can disable or uninstall most of it and use the Google alternatives if need be.
It sounds like I should wait to see if Root and Bootloader Unlocking becomes a thing on the US version of this phone. If I could snag this device, unlock, root it, and flash an AOSP ROM I'd be very tempted to pull the trigger. These things take time, and time I have. The Pixels aren't being released until the end of October to begin with.
with substratum and andromeda i was able to theme the whole system black, including notifications. theming not an issue.
no camera will be as good as google's software allows the pixel to be. if you want the best camera, stick with pixel. everything else is second, including samsung and apple.

Another option if you don't want to use Substratum and Andromeda and are willing to pay a couple bucks: there is a thread with apps by NNG (I think?) that uses the LG theme engine that has a pretty good dark material/Pixel theme. I'm too lazy right now to use Andromeda (I know, I know...) but may go back and give it a shot if I get tired of the LG theme.
One more data point: the camera is still much, MUCH faster than my Nexus 6P was near the end of its life, so it's been a huge step up for me. Something that I did notice and have seen mentioned a couple times elsewhere is that certain photo modes take a little more time to save the picture. I've lost 2 food pictures this way when I closed the camera to quickly after using food mode and snapping a picture. Make sure you give it some time! I haven't noticed this when using the auto mode though (have not tired with AI cam or other modes).
Ok your pros list is spot on with this phone speaker and dac are phenomenal, I'll try to clear up the cons no OLED does suck but it's honestly not that bad. it's a really good display and gets bright as hell, the camera is pretty good (I do some photography in my spare time but to broke to get a real camera) probably not as good as a pixel but it holds it own I'd say give it some time it will probably get a Gcam port (hopefully) battery has been great I haven't had any problems. The skinned OS, LG UX isn't the best but it's not that bad and after throwing on a launcher on it I haven't had a problem. I hope I was able to give some insight if you have any questions feel free to PM me
I appreciate all of the feedback I've received so far. I might pull the trigger on this phone next week. Project Fi is now offering a $300 service credit when purchasing and activating this phone from them. This makes it very hard to wait for the Pixel 3 lol.
Had a pixel 2. It somehow ended up with the OS corrupted, and it was all stock. Last google device I'll ever buy. Went with a G7 nd have not looked back.

Glad to hear. I haven't had a non-Pixel or Nexus device in a long time. Ordered the G7 yesterday so I'm hoping I'm as happy as you all are with this device.
Former Pixel\Nexus guy here. With Bloaty LG stuff, some are able to disable, some are not like Contacts, Messaging, Calendar, Clock. I just put the Pixel 3 Rootless Launcher and works just well. This version of G7 actually lets you select which LG stuff you want from the phone setup process.

Sorry for the thread necro, but does anybody have a writeup about disabling the stock apps? I'm coming from using the Google versions of most stuff, and would be happy to ignore the LG stuff and keep using the Google ones -- but not so happy if I have to pick the right identically-named icon every time, and maybe get double notifications, "which app should I open this with" prompts, etc etc. I'd just as soon uninstall / disable them completely.

There's a thread about package disabler pro (lg)
I found one thread, with "it work I am using it" and not much else. Last night, I think I managed to "disable" the built-in calendar just by turning off its permission for calendar access -- it might keep its own local calendar data but as long as I'm not using it, I don't think it's going to bother me. Same with their mail client. I was also able to totally delete the preinstalled Facebook and Instagram (eww). Their Contacts, Calendar, and Clock apps seem fine (and actually pretty similar to stock) so I'll probably just keep using them. I'm on the fence about keeping the stock launcher, but I don't need a special lock-down / uninstall procedure to do that.

So, I figured some input from former Pixel or Nexus owners who have moved on to this device would prove to be very helpful in my purchase decision.
Any input is appreciated, Thanks!

If you're interested in this phone just wait for the G8, it still has a skinned OS but you could always install pixel launcher and it would have an app drawer, battery is pretty big I think 3,500 mah, camera won't be as good as the newest pixel but with a gcam port you should be able to pull off some really good shots. The G8 has an OLED screen

General Initial impressions

Got my Sunny Yellow one delivered this morning so been playing with it most of the day. Initial impressions are very good, some are listed below. Feel free to list your own.
The fingerprint scanner was a little off but after an update came in i deleted my fingerprints and re-did them and its been fine ever since. Couple of times it hasnt worked but i think thats because the screen is so smooth/slippery that my thumb slipped on the screen as it was trying to read it.
I dont have a 5g plan or even 5g signal where i am to test but so far 4g speeds are exactly the same as my pixel 2xl and oppo reno 2 ive come from.
I dont really like having the "internet" tile, id prefer having them seperate the wifi and mobile data tab. Just seems strange to add a further click to enable/disable wifi when i want to instead of just hitting the tab.
On the home screen if you make a folder then the apps slightly overhang the edge of the circle which just looks odd to me, i wish they were all within the folder.
I wish there was an option of disabling the big clock on the lock screen. I have a picture of my partner on my lock screen and when picking up the phone id rather see her than her face covered by a huge clock
The phone got very hot when setting up and transferring apps/data from my old phone but has been fine since.
I love the screen and how smooth everything flows. I dont see any issue with brightness personally. Ill see how battery life performs over the coming days
Hollow screen sound is a bit strange
Nova launcher crashes which is a shame because I don't like the search bar forced at the bottom of the screen on the pixel launcher.
Camera is brilliant
Power button is in the wrong place and should be swapped with the volume buttons is.
Lack of screen protectors available to get delivered is frustrating but not Google's issue.
It's fast, smooth and had a great camera. The rest I am still get used to. Prefer it to my S21 ultra, maybe not loving it as much as my Mi 10 Pro.
The camera hump on the back really exposes the glass to potential damage. If I were designing the thing, I'd make the entire back stick out higher than the camera glass, and fill in the space with more battery.
The rounded edge screen is pretty terrible. There are optical distortions along the sides. The radius of the edge should be reduced to around 1 mm.
A little more width on the screen would be nice. This is 71.5mm. Nexus 6 was 74, which was a lot nicer. 80 would be a dream.
A little bit of border around the screen would also be nice so you have somewhere to actually hold the thing. Function should be paramount, not form, and especially not goofy/ugly form like these have. A bit of border above the screen would make space to get the camera out of the screen instead of the ugly hole. I also hate the rounded corners on the screen. Software rounded corners are ok, because you can disable them, there is no reason to force it with paint on the inside surface of the glass.

feel the same way with filling up the space with more battery... but then you have ppl complaining about how fat the phone is
Love it so far, so fast and fluid. As mentioned above it gets real hot, and was still discharging while using old pixel charger.
Camera is amazing the details captured are stunning.
Phone is very slippery to hold and would be easy to drop with the top weight of the camera hump. Tried to buy a case for grip and protection, and was told that they can until tomorrow because that was the day the phone was supposed to be delivered, but because of our crap postal service they sent a day early so that people would or should get them by that date
Real time translation works very well, even with the new update still seems a little buggy
Screen for me is fine for brightness I have high brightness mode widget and it is much brighter than the 4xl
I could buy pixel charger which I might take back because it doesn't seem to charge an faster.
My wireless car charger for the pixel 4xl charges this phone at about the same speed as the old wall charger, need to see if it throttles for heat though..

I agree, but it also would be heavy
This is concerning "Nova launcher crashes which is a shame because I don't like the search bar forced at the bottom of the screen on the pixel launcher." Hopefully there will be an update to Nova soon.
All the negative feedback on the rounded edges are making me consider the Pixel 6 versus the Pro. I think the base RAM on the 6 is fine. Giving up the Zoom is tougher to consider.

There as a day when heavy meant PREMIUM and light meant junk.
My laptop (lenovo), not even old, actually had some weights added into it to make it feel more substantial.
And so what if its a little heavier as long as it isn't burdensome. You can easily carry around several pounds without it being burdensome.

If you were referring to the rounded CORNERS, there will be kind-of software solutions for the rounded corners. Right now you can run "wm size 1440x2890" to reduce the display area (persistently). This brings the display area past the camera hole and past the rounded corners. Now normally, there would be a system property available to adjust the corners, however this one has multi-radius corners which are set in a config for systemui, therefore will actually require a rebuild from source to fix, but once that is unset, it should have square corners.
However the side effect of course, will be a slightly smaller display area. Still wider than the non-Pro, but less than it is now. Not that you need all that height for any practical purpose.
And for that matter, you could use the same "wm size" command to reduce the display width to work around the rounded edges. "wm size 1300x3120" pulls the display area all the way into the flat part and eliminates the optical distortions. You could probably establish a better balance that lets it in just a little bit and probably gives the same width as the non-Pro.

Nova Launcher was crashing for me but it seemed to be a clock widget I had previously and it wasn't displaying it.
I deleted the widget and rebooted the phone and it has been perfect since and all day today.
My screen now looks like my 3XL only longer, faster, smoother
I can't find a was to Turn off Always on Display. Ist ist me, or isn't there an option?
Thanks for the tip on Nova, might rebuild my screen from scratch with it too ID the issue. The pixel launcher without some custom apps and grid sizes is a bit of a jarring experience. Search at the bottom is all wrong too.

Have you gotten the small 70 MB Android update yet? Mine was buggy with Nova Launcher Prime, in particular, but after the update, all good.
I like the fingerprint reader better than the ultrasonic in my Note 10+. It's working much better and faster for me so far. Here's hoping that stays true.
