HTC m9 Messaging App Time and Date Stamps Vanishing - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I have a very annoying bug going on with my stock messaging application. When I go back into my messages I see the date and time stamp but as I scroll up none of the messages have a date and time stamp. This is a big problem for me right now as clients sometimes message me and I have no dates to reference. My phone storage has been low on the phone but I have been keeping some space by clearing it out.
Regardless does anyone know what the cause could be here? I have some really old messages and they are showing no dates.

From my experience, when HTC messenger is broken, I uninstall any App updates and presto. Good as new.

Thanks for the reply, so the application has no updates that I see on play store. So you are saying you uninstall it, don't your messages disappear when you reinstall it? Don't know if the application is even on play store for reinstall.

If you're worried about the messages, use a back up service like Gcloud or similar, but backing up only the messages. But you can't uninstall it unless you you're rooted and yes it's In the play store. But you might want to abandon backing up messages all to together and just email the important ones to your PC.
Just uninstall the app updates already. Lol

I've got the same issue, uninstalled re-installed still don't display and they used to.
have you tried going to the application settings?
then customize the style and enable contact picture?
maybe its disabled in the new update

I done that too, and I enabled large picture under the 'display contacts picture' setting. still no luck
in that case its probably an issue with handcent, itll probably get updated soon so keep your eyes open you can always leave a comment on the market?
You can add me to the list . I thought it might have been something I uninstalled, but doubt it.
Contact the developer of the app.
I got the same problem , only a few pictures works ...
It seems to work well with Chompsms, but i dont want those damn "iphone" bubbles
I'm having the same issue but I am doubting that it is due to Handcent.

I have my contact sync'd from Google and Facebook for HTC Sense on my HTC Incredible. Any SMS or MMS message I receive will show the contact image except the 10 or so contacts that I have in my Google Talk list. I have tried "un-linking" them but it didn't correct the problem. The same thing is happening in the original Messages application so that is why I am questioning the cause being associated with Handcent.
Any other thoughts about this?
I'm having the same issue. I recall I fixed this once by going into the contacts application and clearing the data. Everything synced up again.
OR perhaps I just uninstalled Facebook for HTC Sense and reinstalled it..I can't remember. Damn.
Yep..uninstalled FB from syncing, and reinstalled..takes a while..but they are all back in hancent.

Facebook +1 on numbers

i know it's been asked and i don't see any solutions, but facebook adds +1 to every number of it.
i just added someone, and i added their number manually, but they also happen to have their # on facebook. since i sync my stuff, it automatically synced, and the FB number with +1 over wrote the regular number, so now when i send them texts, they don't get it. i don't want to unsync it, but there's GOT to be a way to fix this. yet another reason why facebook is utter crap.
You can go into the "dialer" app and clear the cache, I read that that worked for someone.
If not, click on the app at the top of this list to download the Contacts Cleanup for our CDMA carrier. It'll get rid of the plus signs before every number. Be sure not to get rid of the "1" that's in the country code field! Make sure you save that .apk file on the phone somewhere and re-install the app manually if you flash another rom, because the market will just install the regular "Contacts Cleanup" that doesn't really work with our phones too well.
I also use "Contacts Analyzer" to clean up duplicate contacts. They pile up pretty high if you flash roms often.

[Q] Looking for App to secure delete or shred old files

I'm looking for an app to automatically and securely wipe previusly deleted data from my phone. Preferably when its idle and sitting in the background.
When I get rid of my phone, I don't want anyone to be able to recover my sensitive data such as my emails, and my text messages. It could be a little embarassing.
I've tried SHREDroid for the Sprint Galaxy Nexus but it crashes everytime I start it. Does anyone know of other available options?
The difficulty for someone to recover your old files (if even possible) is not worth the time.. You really shouldn't worry because your emails are gone when you remove your account, and if you delete a text it is gone. I think the only thing you have to worry about is your Google login data, and even that is more trouble than it's worth to recover (unless someone really hates you) and even then 99% of potential buyers probably don't even know it is possible (or care).
I'm not sure this is entirely true. Here's my example: I have a Verizon HTC Thunderbolt that I have been using since Dec '11. I wanted to make a back up of my text messages, so that I could restore them to me new phone.
I downloaded an SMS backup from the Play market, entered my gmail credentials to store my SMS and when I checked the next morning, I had over +8000 backed up SMS messages. I was curious, and looked through to see what was somehow restored. I have routinely kept my text inbox tidy because it feels slower when one thread has over 2000 messages.
This is what prompted me to search for an answer.

What app? I will give it a go as well, but I do not believe the phone keeps the deleted texts. Could be wrong though.

Transfer SMS from iPhone to Galaxy S3?

Is there a way to do this? I read that in the UK, Samsung have a software available to do just that, but I don't think that is accessible from North America. Does anyone here know of a different way?

You can download a software called Backuptrans iPhone SMS to Android Transfer to help. It lets you do the transfer on computer directly.
Best luck!

I did that as well and while the process went well, the default SMS app was less than thrilled that I added 10,000 messages to it.
Had to manually delete the database to get it working again.
I did it in a local RadioShack store the have a machine calle "cellebrite" and transfered all the stuff I had on a old iPhone for free.

Was it a seamless transfer? Basically after you transferred the SMS from your iPhone to your Android device, did the SMS on your Android device appeared like as if it was sent and or received from the Android device?

The fact is it will take a very long time to refresh 10,000 messages on Android by the Messaging app. Your Android will run slowly when messages refreshing. You should split your iPhone messages into small parts for transferring. 1,000 messages in a part may work fine.
As you have transferred 10, 000 messages to your android. You can simply use Handcent on your Android and then disable default Android Messaging. To disable Messaging, click System Settings => Apps => Messaging => Disable. Check the attachment.
Hope this can help.

Yep, I could do all of that, but in the end I decided that I really did not care about the messages enough to jump through hoops. Getting them out of the iPhone backup and into the importable file was enough for me, now I have them somewhere and can access them if need be.

No, because it exports all the messages to an XML file.
encrypted error
Hey all, sorry to dig this thread up.
I got my new S3 today and have been going about transferring everything over, so far so good except for my mms messages. I have followed the instructions here but run into the same problem both times. It seems my sms file pulled from itunes is encrypted somehow. I get an error message "file is encrypted or is not an sms backup file" or something to that degree. I tried the online upload which returned the same encrypted error.
Has anyone else run into this? Thanks.

Do you setup encrypt iPhone backup in the iTunes for your iPhone? If yes, please uncheck the "encrypt iphone backup" from your iPhone and try again. To do this:
Step 1: Plug your iPhone into your computer via a USB cable. If iTunes does not automatically open, manually open it.
Step 2: If your device automatically begins to sync, allow it to do so. If it doesn't, continue to the next step.
Step 3: Click on your iPhone in the sidebar on the left in iTunes. Make sure you are on the "Summary" section.
Step 4: Uncheck the "encrypt iphone backup" option.
Done!
Hope this can help.
What plan are you on, most come with loads of or unlimited text bundles. Use a spare Sim and just forward them all to your new phone.
You may read the guide below, it helps you in transferring SMS from iPhone to Android.

Push Email Not Working

I am getting a little frustrated at some of the things that don't seem to be working. I came from a S8+ and use Aquamail. Push email doesn't seem to work. I also tried it with Nine email as well and I can't seem to get it to work in either app. I don't know, maybe it could be notifications that aren't working. When I open the app, the email is there but I don't get any notifications of a new email.

Out of curiosity, why not use Gmail? Do these apps have some features over Gmail that make it worth while? I use Gmail for my exchange account and push notifications and it works there though

I use K-9 email and have the same problem, I'm pretty sure it's an Oreo thing. Oreo goes to great lengths to stop apps from running in the background for better battery life. The good news is that you can stop Oreo from optimizing the battery for a specific app, the bad news at least for me so far is that your phone won't doze any more. This doesn't really kill battery life but it kinda goes from awesome to not so good. So unfortunately I don't believe there's good solution so far.
I'm getting the same issue with the Gmail app and I've confirmed that the app is not battery optimized. I kinda need this to work ?
Same here! November update, Gmail does not refresh. Kind of a serious issue, I would say! I already submitted feedback.

It will certainly continue to doze when you disable optimization on any application. The only difference is that the doze will be interrupted by that particular application while its alarm runs. Naturally, anything that causes the CPU to wake up, will reduce battery life. This is a fact that there simply is no way to avoid.
FYI: This change first appeared in Android 7. Not new to Android 8.

I couldn't tell you about the implementation for exchange, since I *will not* use any ms product ever.... but I can tell you that the AOSP email client (which is visually merged into the Gmail application when it is installed) does NOT support any form of push notification for IMAP.

The gmail application is NOT what needs to be battery optimized to receive gmail notifications. In fact, I'm not sure if the gmail application does any networking *at all*. Gmail push notifications are implemented through GCM/FCM (google/firebase cloud messaging), which is through Google Play Services.
Blue Mail is working great for me.
I started having issues with Exchange email syncing this week and am noticing Gmail keeping the app awake for hours each battery cycle. Even tried removing the account, clearing Gmail data and cache, and rebooting.
By chance, did any of you clear a bunch of stuff from Google Framework to force the November OTA?
ouch
I did reset it and then the problems rolled in. How are you meant to get Now 17 when a new pixel 2 xl I got on Tuesday is on October OTA. I have had to factory reset and start to add everything back in. Touch wood that the sync and emails seem to be working fine now!

I meant October or whatever is the latest OTA. But, doing that method of clearing framework causes the issues you're having.

Interestingly enough, enabling battery optimization for the gmail app is what fixed my problem (account wasn't syncing unless I opened it and swiped down). Now my exchange account syncs properly. I understand what you're saying, but I think my issue was with the gmail app itself and not the push notifications within the app.
go into battery optimization. turn OFF battery optimization for these apps you require push (i even disabled it for whatsapp)
Is there a fix if you did clear the data from Framework?

I had the same problem. Have used HTC Mail on many previous phones and like it.
Found a standalone version of it that will install with any apk installer.
Works fine with no issues on the Px2-XL.
