I'm planning on buying a Moto Z Play but it's a verizon version. So, my question is that will the ROMs that are actually made for the original Moto Z Play work on this Verizon version? I'm asking this because the other Motorola Verizon phones for e.g the Droid Turbo 2 and Moto Z Force had locked bootloaders because of which you couldn't install custom roms on them.
If you find an unlock key for Verizon version you could use them. But there aren't, so get a useable version
As far as I know all current Verizon phones are completely locked. Total shame on Verizon.

If you end up miss having a rooted phone, like I do, look into DNS66. It does a really fine job of getting most ads and I don't notice any delay or resource issues. Also, through Google play, there is an app called MATERIAL NOTIFICATION SETTINGS. It allows you to theme your pull down stuff.
same you
i bought moto z play droid verzion
can i install different stock rom ?
cause i want arabic language, that not include in verzion moto z play
pls help

i have a r800x (all i've done is root and then removed all bloatware i can find, and running adw launcher pro)
my wife has a droid x2 (also rooted and most of the bloatware is removed)
now she is coming up to her upgrade, i'm trying to decide if i want the larger screen and dual cores (no way to unlock bootloader, but one dev is almost got Kexec working) or stick with the xperia play and go with unlocking my bootloader so i can run cm9 (that is until cm10 gets more polished)
so you guys with verizon play, how is cm9 (other cm9 based roms) i see camera works fine now and touchpad support (not that worried if all my games work right) is it smooth enough for daily use and not get agrevated?
also, it not a deal breaker to have the gamepad, its nice, but i find i don't use it as much as i thought i would, but i still like the form factor of the phone, just getting opinions i guess on how you guys with unlocked bootloaders on verizon like your phone

My first two android phones were Moto and I will never again in a bajillion years ever touch their stuff again. I came from a Motorola Droid, Droid 2 Global, Samsung Captivate and now the Xperia PLAY. Hands down this phone is my favorite bar none...... the Droid X2 did not do too well. In all honesty I would stick with the Xperia PLAY and sell the Droid X2 while it can still be sold for some cash....just my opinion if it were me in your shoes.

I once owned a Droid X2, and sold it off.
Not really worth it. Your choice in ROMs is much better with the Play, and is a Mich better phone than the X2.

thanks guys, i follow both of your guys post on here due to you seem to be a lot like me (at least as much as i can tell from the way you type)
i still like the play a lot, and from what i can tell the battery life is still much better than the x2. i'm thinking if i just unlock the play, get an overclocking kernel (cm9/10) and good governor, then i'll probably be golden.
which kernels do you guys run?

I run FXP Turbo on CM9. It is a great kernel if you are looking for performance and stability, and seems like it will be frequent updated.

Any comparison between 480 and 720 record. I heard it isn't any better but its something I would like to see from the play.

If you're talking about official update - no. Sony stopped development for out phone with 4.1.2
But I'm sure there will be unofficial ROM here on XDA
yes i'm talking about unofficial of course
but i saw that raymanfx is no longer here in xperia s section so i thought that it might take a while to get the update on our device
My crystal ball isn't very good, we can't predict yet what drivers are going to be broken with Android L. If not much changes, a port to Android L is very likely, but otherwise we'll be stuck at KK or maybe the Android L builds will be less functional. All things we can't know yet.
Also, RaymanFX isn't the only developer for the fuji platform so if he develops for a bunch of other devices now, that doesn't mean our devices are getting no love. We have Android 4.4.4 based ROMs already, what more could we ask for at the moment?
To see if Android L will be supported, the buildable sources for the final version will need to be released. Right now is much too early to speculate. I'm quite hopeful as well, although I'm planning on getting the next Nexus phone or a Nexus 5 if I can't wait any longer, having a phone for 2 years is enough for me.
android L on xperia s
clearly no android L will be coming to xperia s
How to know when ?
There have not yet any release...

Many people said that for KitKat .
Xperia S has the necessary power, remains to be seen for basic compatibility...
Xperia S has a really good hardware, I hope it will be enough for Android L
U know what
Sony should learn from Motorola
They are updating old handsets to kitkat like droid Razer and atrix HD.AND SONY doesn't

Are we going to be ranting about this again? Those Motorola devices don't have a Snapdragon S3, do they? No, the Razr HD and M have an S4 Plus (the older Razr doesn't get an update to KK), and the Atrix HD also has an S4 Plus. You see where I'm getting at? I'm pretty sure we would have gotten to Android 4.2 if Qualcomm hadn't dropped the Snapdragon S3. It's a hardware problem, can you still not get that by now?
Yeah Sony shouldn't have used such an old SoC, we all knew that but we still bought the thing. Right now the phone is over 2 and a half years old, you can't expect any updates anymore, not even Motorola does that: Atrix HD and those Razr's aren't 2 years old yet.
I'm not saying Sony isn't to blame, the Xperia T should have gotten KitKat but didn't, and it took way too long to get KitKat on even the newer devices. It's insane to see Sony take over half a year while Motorola is faster than the Google Play Edition devices. The Sony skin isn't even that different from Holo.
If quick official updates are important to you, learn your lesson and get a Nexus or GPE device. Moaning about what Sony should do doesn't help since A) the hardware doesn't support it (without straying from official drivers) and B) Sony will never learn. Updates have been an issue since the Xperia X10, the very first Android phone they made.
But the great thing about Android is how open it is, at least compared to other handset os'es, so at least we're getting unofficial KitKat updates and I bet there will be Android L ports. If not for RaymanFX, deedwar and the other dev's, I would have gotten a Nexus 5 months ago.
I want to upgrade from my Moto G 2013 to the Moto Z Play series as I already invested in a Livermorium Keyboard Mod and I love the long battery life of the Plays. Usually I would buy the Moto Z2 Play because of its aluminium back, bigger internal storage and higher RAM. But I also look at the community and custom ROM support.
What I do before buying a phone or tablet is checking XDA and have a look at the current development status for the devices and if custom ROM support is good (never trust the marketing guys ). The Moto Z Play does have a huge advantage of a healthy developer community. What's the situation like with the Moto Z2 Play, are any developers planning to support both devices? The code base shouldn't diverge too much I think (or am I mistaken?).

Not just better support, the Z Play is a better phone than the Z2 Play. Same amount of ram (32GB version), same screen, negligible CPU difference. The main difference is the Z2 Play has notably worse battery life. There's no reason to choose the Z2 Play over the Z play, it just worse, unless you absolutely need an FM radio. Storage size is negligible, it supports micro SD.
Considering the main strength of this phone is performance combined with awesome battery life, they took a great phone and made it an average phone with the Z2.
Custom rom support is not great with either though, since the stock rom is almost stock Android, there's not a lot of reason to install a custom rom. I haven't even rooted mine and that's a first for me.
Seconded. Moto Alternative to Z Play for me would not be the Z2 Play, but X4 or G5S+ or something. Z2 Play runtime wasn't that good in tests. Z2 Play may be preferred if you need longer update support (later model probably implies this) and want the modules. I personally won't use modules, because I want to use a belt clip. AFAIK all cases for Z series with belt clip won't fit if you attach a module.
Where is AOSP Extended? RR? Viper OS?
Bunch of reasons, though the primary one that I would guess is the phone is bootloader locked for Verizon. I'm not sure how wide spread this phone is on other networks at this point that are unlockable, but the most are probably
on verizon. I stopped using the nexus line when it stopped. Moto phones are close to stock and with the projector mod, a cheap entry price deal from verizon, I took a risk and went with this phone. My most durable nexus phone was the 6, which was made by motorola. I'm loving the quality of the phone and the battery life. I even picked up a dirt cheap moto z play on craigslist and love it just as much and its even better battery.
If you really care about custom roms, you gotta do some research and follow the developers, not necessarily the other way around. I'm not sure what I am going to do in a year for my next phone, but I do liked trying out the other vendors.
I feel, there have not been many buyers of the Z2 Play, hence the community support for this smartphone is quite low.
Before the Z2 play i used to own a Galaxy S4 mini, which has great support till date, and threads for different Custom Android versions of Viper, XenonHD, RR,AOKP, AICP, are still active.
There are a lot more Custom Android versions for the s4 mini but they have got inactive only some months ago.
Even now development for Android O version for the S4 mini is going on.
The main reason according to me is, s4 mini got a lot of buyers, and the small form factor plus the removable battery made a lot of its users stick to it , and luckily a lot of them seem to have been Android developers .
Is that because phone is relative new?
I hope soon this changes!
So I guess I will keep using my rooted Droid Turbo.
I guess I wrongly assumed that since the bootloader could be unlocked, there would be developement.
Don't get me wrond. I totally appreciate what has been accomplished!
I am grateful for root and TWRP!
I find it hard to believe that Motorola/Lenovo has not posted the stock firmware for this device.
I really like having a rooted phone, mostly for the ability ot install dark themes. I really hate white backgrounds and status bar icons.
I prefer Motorola phones. I wonder what my next phone will be...
I will surely wait until stock firmware is actually available, prior to purchase.
A few days ago they (Lenovo) released the kernel source code for Oreo so that might help some devs to start developing for our device if they want.
We're not gonna see a lot of developer support for the device for one reason: not a lot of people have a z2 Play. At least, not enough for devs to actually care about supporting our device which not enough people are using it to garner enough interest.
It also helps that the z2 Play was a push in the wrong direction towards battery life and thus, most potential buyers, most of which are going to be Moto Z Play owners, are gonna stick with their current phones.
Hey just wondering if any Devs on this happen to have gotten there hands on a Moto g6 play. I have the G4 play but just got the g6 and while there's root not a single one of us knows how to clean it up and make custom ROMs ?? I kinda feel bad for em so I'm just curious if anyone over here on the g4 play side wants to help lol prolly goes against the rules on here but I don't feel like I'm asking any Devs to solely work on a rom. Just curious who has one and has messed around with it lol

I have the Moto G6 Play, I unlocked the bootloader, installed Magisk root with TWRP, and have just been messing around with modules and other root apps on stock, I myself am waiting for some custom roms to pop outta the woodwork, we're also waiting for device trees for the G6 Play, once those are made available then we can get started on the custom rom scene for it
Yo

Out here!
Right now with a Moto G6 Play [thankful that i didnt waste my extra bucks on the trashy G6]
Yeah, i have just finished up developing roms/mods for the Micromax Canvas Fire 5 Q386, planning ahead for the development of Moto G6 Play.
Great device though.
Lets all unite and do this, guys! XD

I think 424 ppi, octacore SD 450 and adreno 506 beat the Play hands down any day.

So what about the battery!?
A cheap 3000 mah for an octacore proc!?
Lol when i had my Fire 5 just with a quad core proc and just 2500 mah was equivalently sufficient.
And all those complaints regarding a noisy cam in the night and battery backup!
Lol G6 Play would stomp in the major factor, except that G6 has a 400+ ppi dpi [not a concern for me] and an octa core [i have a mac, so i dont need to do **** on a droid] XD
Just another Moto g4 plus. XD
Yet another worst G series droid.

I got the xt1922-7 boost mobile variant also with root and twrp and magisk working good. I don't technically own a computer or laptop though I used a friend's computer to do all that otherwise I would get into making a rom also lol. Magisk hide works with Pokemon go so I know it all works and I got a permissive switch module working to. it's just little rough for newer users to root still and I feel bad I suppose cause I notice some people messing it up or it not working right for them. I wish I had a computer otherwise I'd be able to help contribute more. ?
What I also find annoying is that we have 64 bit CPU but the stock os is 32 bit
