Z Play or Z2 Play - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

I want to upgrade from my Moto G 2013 to the Moto Z Play series as I already invested in a Livermorium Keyboard Mod and I love the long battery life of the Plays. Usually I would buy the Moto Z2 Play because of its aluminium back, bigger internal storage and higher RAM. But I also look at the community and custom ROM support.
What I do before buying a phone or tablet is checking XDA and have a look at the current development status for the devices and if custom ROM support is good (never trust the marketing guys ). The Moto Z Play does have a huge advantage of a healthy developer community. What's the situation like with the Moto Z2 Play, are any developers planning to support both devices? The code base shouldn't diverge too much I think (or am I mistaken?).

Not just better support, the Z Play is a better phone than the Z2 Play. Same amount of ram (32GB version), same screen, negligible CPU difference. The main difference is the Z2 Play has notably worse battery life. There's no reason to choose the Z2 Play over the Z play, it just worse, unless you absolutely need an FM radio. Storage size is negligible, it supports micro SD.
Considering the main strength of this phone is performance combined with awesome battery life, they took a great phone and made it an average phone with the Z2.
Custom rom support is not great with either though, since the stock rom is almost stock Android, there's not a lot of reason to install a custom rom. I haven't even rooted mine and that's a first for me.

Seconded. Moto Alternative to Z Play for me would not be the Z2 Play, but X4 or G5S+ or something. Z2 Play runtime wasn't that good in tests. Z2 Play may be preferred if you need longer update support (later model probably implies this) and want the modules. I personally won't use modules, because I want to use a belt clip. AFAIK all cases for Z series with belt clip won't fit if you attach a module.

[Q] Xperia S or Xperia T

Hi guys i've been exploring these two devices and their forums. The fact is that this friday i'm getting a new phone but i don't really know which one of these is right for me, i mean in specs they are pretty much the same.
Physically i like a little bit more the XT because of the bigger screen, the nav bar instrad of the Not so nice notification led bar on the XS, also the XT Has the possiblity of adding an micro sd card. The downside i see about the XT is the Thermal throttling and the dimming screen when playing or else, but don' really know if this also happens on the XS. The camera quality of both devices are good, some claim XT is better but XS is really close.
The development section on the XT Is really young, i mean there are not many roms nor kernels etc. So this is a point for the XS which development is a little more advanced and explored.
So those are my thoughts anyways i want you guys to help me decide by telling me which pne would you buy and why?
Pd. Also recommend a rom for the device you'd pick.
In my case for the XS i think i'd go pac rom or cm9
For the XT Any stock rom deodexed and optimized and then cusromize it at my taste
Thanks in advance :fingers-crossed:

Xperia T is great. I actually have Xperia S. I was wondering if I should upgrade, and decided to stay with S
to get the quadcore Xperia which should be out next year.
Xperia T is slightly faster and has improved interface elements over previous Xperias, but the difference is not massive.
So if the price doesn't count, get the newer. If the price counts you can safely take S which is still a great phone.

Agree with you. Xperia S is a good device! I'm going to buy in the future the new quad core device from Sony ,so decided to stay with my XS for now.

I was able to compare both so it's true for sure.
If you're at least concerned about the price, pick the Xperia S, definitely.
If you're rich or really just don't care about money, get the Xperia T.
The Xperia T does everything just a little better, but there's no major change.
I'm loving my Xperia S. Anything I'd wish it had, the Xperia T doesn't have either.
Get the Xperia V.
It has the new Qualcomm S4 Snapdragon processor which offers a substantial performance boost over the S3 processor in the Xperia S. It is also more energy-efficient.
Xperia T.is.good phone (a little bit better than XS), but look at this:

I'm gonna buy this or Z3 Compact. Honest opinion?

Hello!
This Christmas I'mm gonna buy a new phone for myself. I'm really in love with Sony, and I also don't like more-than-5-inch displays, so the two options I'm considering are this phone (Z1 Compact) or the newer Z3 Compact.
The thing is, looking at specs, the biggest differences between them are a bit larger screen, a larger battery and the newer SD801 (in contrast with the SD800). I believe the camera sensor is the same, as is RAM, connectivity, etc.
I can buy the Z1 Compact from Amazon at 350€, or get it second-hand at 250-300€. However, the Z3 Compact I can get at Amazon for 460€, a bit less if I get it second-hand.
My question is: Is this difference in price worth it? Or would you recommend me to buy the Z1? (I think Sony confirmed that all "Z" family will upgrade to Lollipop, right?)
Go for the Z1C!
In my opinion the difference is minor, but the price is much higer.

I think this is something you only know the answer for, here is a detailed video that explains the differences between the two devices :
Though, if I were you, I'd go for Z3 Compact as a device (even after looking to the price)
but, if I wan't to chose in terms of software, I think I'd go with Z1 Compact
cuz I believe not many users that already have Z1c (like me) would wonna switch to the almost the same Z3c!
which means no devs are gonna be there as well
So as I said, your personal needs control what decision you should make
Regards,
Omar.
Z1c. As previously stated not much difference (bigger display, faster CPU, 4k video) but much higher price.
Best regards,
Coempi
as z1c owner, i would pay the difference for z3c.
the display size and dual speakers win it for me as major improvements in my eyes.
huge downside z3c cant be rooted with locked bootloader, you must unlock BL to root :/
i would go for the z3 compact if i never bought my z1 compact because of the ps4 remote play and daulshock 4 compatibility
If money is not a problem, go for Z3c all the way.
But if you consider the extra money Z3c asks for, then by buying the Z1c you won't feel really bad, the differences are minor in my opinion. Of course a bigger screen in the same body and a bigger battery would be welcome, but I don't think they are important enough to justify the price difference.
Buy the Z3c . It's better than the Z1c, but that does not mean the z1c is bad.
I think the z3c is worth the cost of the upgrade, but as a z1c owner I will not upgrade unless sony changes their policy on unlocking wrt DRM keys, or someone finds an exploit. Root isn't optional for me, but I'm not willing to tank my camera performance to get it, so I'm sticking with my z1c until something comes along in this form factor that is better and also non-destructively root-able.
Z1 compact owner here:
If you already have a Z1c = don't get the Z3c
If you don't already have a Z1c = get the Z3c
Quite simple brah
there is 2 issues with the camera on z1 compact.
1) LED bled, and black marker made it ugly on my white phone.
2) My camera freeze once in a while. And recently, it freeze when i try to take consecutive shots. (First shot ok, 2nd shot freeze)
Get the z3. And z3 has double tap to wake. I doubt ps4 game would look nice on such small screen though.
Thank you! I'm more decided now on buying the Z1C!
Honestly, I don't need the PS4 Remote Play function (don't own one, to begin with). Also, losing the DRM keys and general camera functionality when rooting is a real bummer.
I watched the video Omar posted, very helpful! Also, the Z1C will get 5.0 Lollipop in this coming year, as is all the Xperia Z family, right?

Yes don't worry Sony has promised to bring official Lolipop to Z1 Compact alongside with the rest of Z family (in next the February or so)
also, Z1 Compact will get official Lolipop support from many AOSP-Based ROMs, as soon as CyanogenMod team do so
As I mentioned no worries about software for Z1C, it should get more custom support than Z3C ever will
Regards,
Omar.
Not a worthy phone to buy for Rs.15,000 more
Me too was confused between z1c and z3c
But after a lot of searching and review,i decided to go for z1c
I could go for z3c if sony priced it less.
The sales man tried to convinced me to buy z3c,then i convinced him
Go for the white version gud luck
The main problem now is z3c needs unlock BL to get root so you will loss warranty and some of Sony features. If you need root or want to backup your TA before unlock BL, Z1c is more recommended.
There are many good stuffs on z3c like better battery life(bcoz of s801), a bit bigger screen, dual front speaker and 4K recording w/ video stabilization(our 4K mod no stabilization), a bit better camera focus and more light weight.
But z1c is really good for its lower price and the looking is better because of metal bumper it looks like more a premium design and I think the LED notification is also better on z1c.

Overall love

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Moto Z2 Play, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Moto Z2 Play is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Superb
I love my wife and kids, but I really do like this phone!
It's slim, light, quick and battery life is MUCH better than any smartphone I've had. With the same daily use and charging in nav dock, while driving, I have from 60-100% at the end of the day. Other phones, my last DD was a Moto X Pure Edition 2015, would have 30% in the evening or sometimes need a charge for evening use.
Some nights, I don't even put it on the charger as it has above 90%, because I just got back from a drive. Between 2000 and 0500, the Z2 Play drops only 4%, sitting on my dresser.
like Pizza_Pablo above. I too upgraded from a Moto X² Pure. I am loving this phone. outstanding battery performance. perhaps because I'm almost always connected to wifi.
and the Moto Mods! particularly the super slim Turbopower Mod, something I hardly ever use but love having all the same.
i don't drive, so I'm on commuter trains a lot, in the past I would have to find a seat with a power outlet, making sure I'm topped off for the day just to read the news. Now, I don't look for outlets, and instead of news I'm playing a graphic intense game.
it's such a relief to be able to ignore the battery gage, with a nice looking phone.
Nice phone, if only it had 64 bit stock ROM...
ROM Stock
Just wanted to understand why the motorola put the system to 32 bits in the z2 play. I'm looking for a more stable ROM in the 64bit version to install on my device.

You're going to be so disappointed when you find out 64bit won't make you coffee in the morning.
Average at best if you come from the original Moto Z Play. That one had ****ty software updates too, but at least it had 2 days battery life without having to worry. On Moto Z2 Play it's 1.5 days if you rarely use it.
@kewlzter I wouldn't be surprised if 32 bit is part of the reason for the incredible slow updates. Google already made it quite clear that 64 bit is the future and I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same for drivers
The phone has a beautiful feel to it, but the updates and development is disappointing
Bootloader
Does anyone know how to remove the unlocked bootloader message motorola Z2 PLAY?

You can't remove it, you can just overlay it with a logo. There is a guide in themes and apps

Why don't have many developers for Z2 Play?

Where is AOSP Extended? RR? Viper OS?
Bunch of reasons, though the primary one that I would guess is the phone is bootloader locked for Verizon. I'm not sure how wide spread this phone is on other networks at this point that are unlockable, but the most are probably
on verizon. I stopped using the nexus line when it stopped. Moto phones are close to stock and with the projector mod, a cheap entry price deal from verizon, I took a risk and went with this phone. My most durable nexus phone was the 6, which was made by motorola. I'm loving the quality of the phone and the battery life. I even picked up a dirt cheap moto z play on craigslist and love it just as much and its even better battery.
If you really care about custom roms, you gotta do some research and follow the developers, not necessarily the other way around. I'm not sure what I am going to do in a year for my next phone, but I do liked trying out the other vendors.
I feel, there have not been many buyers of the Z2 Play, hence the community support for this smartphone is quite low.
Before the Z2 play i used to own a Galaxy S4 mini, which has great support till date, and threads for different Custom Android versions of Viper, XenonHD, RR,AOKP, AICP, are still active.
There are a lot more Custom Android versions for the s4 mini but they have got inactive only some months ago.
Even now development for Android O version for the S4 mini is going on.
The main reason according to me is, s4 mini got a lot of buyers, and the small form factor plus the removable battery made a lot of its users stick to it , and luckily a lot of them seem to have been Android developers .
Is that because phone is relative new?
I hope soon this changes!
So I guess I will keep using my rooted Droid Turbo.
I guess I wrongly assumed that since the bootloader could be unlocked, there would be developement.
Don't get me wrond. I totally appreciate what has been accomplished!
I am grateful for root and TWRP!
I find it hard to believe that Motorola/Lenovo has not posted the stock firmware for this device.
I really like having a rooted phone, mostly for the ability ot install dark themes. I really hate white backgrounds and status bar icons.
I prefer Motorola phones. I wonder what my next phone will be...
I will surely wait until stock firmware is actually available, prior to purchase.
A few days ago they (Lenovo) released the kernel source code for Oreo so that might help some devs to start developing for our device if they want.
We're not gonna see a lot of developer support for the device for one reason: not a lot of people have a z2 Play. At least, not enough for devs to actually care about supporting our device which not enough people are using it to garner enough interest.
It also helps that the z2 Play was a push in the wrong direction towards battery life and thus, most potential buyers, most of which are going to be Moto Z Play owners, are gonna stick with their current phones.

Free Moto Z Play (with conditions, idea at the moment)

Hi there, long time lurker here and Z Play Custom ROM user as well, mainly the AOSP 8.1, 9 and LOS16 (currently on the phone). So I have recently been planning to switch to X4 due to the official LOS16 support and I like the form factor of that phone a bit more (slightly less tall). Recently I have been thinking to maybe contribute to the community by donating my Z Play as developer device so that maybe someone can bring a stable Android 10 ROM. So to start this off, I am willing to donate a Z Play XT1635-02 version to a very dedicated developer, under the condition that it will be used as a developer device only. I am not sure if that will be possible or a smart thing to do, but I guess ideas start like that and maybe the community can chip in, etc. The phone is 10/10 condition with battery still giving me 10hr SOT+ and amazing standby but it's not a G phone so just pure LOS16 flash with Magisk and few modules, one being the ACC module to limit battery charge to 80% and also I think it controls the current if the stock charger is used. The phone looks and feels brand new and is located in Canada.

Yes, probably my #1 choice and maybe Alberto but I think he moved on to a different device. It would be good for a developer to respond here and make a statement or some other senior member advise them of this opportunity. I would be willing to pay for shipping, or split the shipping or some form of donation for shipping would be nice too. It's a team effort, the way I see it.
