The wait begins for the developer image
OK, please don't kill me since I'm new to this.
I just got a Shield and rooted it. How do I upgrade to 6.3 without bricking it or losing my data?
i would say to wait for the developer images to be available before upgrading.

yes wait for the developer image that way you can just flash it over current build without data loss
Well, installed the update on my unrooted Shield , showing in the changelog that finally Tidal can stream music in hi-fi res. Nevertheless nothing has changed, in the Tidal app (Android Tv, obtained from the Play Store and registered with my payied account ) in the settings it shows Hi-fi quality, but I get Pcm 48kbps, 2 channel music. Nothing more.
At the contrary in my Marantz Avr, the same service active through the Heos App, gives me 320kbps AAC 2channels, at least.
What is the reason for this? Is there a setting I should adapt, to have the same quality as in my Avr on the Shield?
Thanks for your interest

According to this 2 Users answered:
Absolutely nobody cares about this, and you're not wrong. But. The hit comes from having to disable some forms of branch prediction / speculative execution when context switching between user and supervisor modes of the processor. This manifests as "around disk and network I/O" but other compute workloads could also be slowed depending on the amount of context switching.
Streaming media really doesn't cause many context switches so that's most likely safe (there could be another process running that could cause slowdowns.)
You can benchmark your context switches with a bunch of different tools. I'm a Linux guy and I don't have any windows boxes at hand so I'm not sure what you'd use there, but I'm sure there's something. Once you have a benchmark you can probably determine the likelihood of having problems with your given workload.

The performance hit comes from Meltdown, not Spectre.
Most ARM-based chips are not vulnerable to Meltdown with the only exception seemingly being Apples ARM designs, as well as potentially the unreleased Snapdragon 845 and Samsung's new Exynos.
So if Nvidia's fix is exactly that from the January security bulletin then there's essentially no performance hit.
Spectre is a pretty bad exploit though because essentially the exploit can't be easily fixed so it's mostly just reducing the potential for exploits. Further mitigations may be necessary in the future both in hardware and software.

Depends on Nvidia if I remember right 6,2 was post in like 3-5 days but 6.1 took 2-3 weeks
Interestingly, updating my non-rooted 16GB Shield to 6.3 resulted in a weird bug.
Now if I use Gamestream, my second xbox 360 controller is no longer recognised as a controller, instead it's recognised as a keyboard and mouse.
This is when using multiple 360 controllers via the wireless dongle.
If I downgrade/flash the 6.2 developer image, will it update to the 6.3 dev image, or will it be the consumer version?

I can confirm that I guinea pigged the 6.3 update from a rooted 2017 Darcy expecting it to fail. To my surprise, it validated and installed without a problem. Lost root but you only have to temp boot into TWRP to flash SuperSU or Magisk and you're back in business. Hope this helps people.
Rooted 16gb 2017.
Inadvertently clicked to apply the 6.3 update.
update installed and rebooted.
Now on 6.3, lost root.
I thought that the OTA would not install on a rooted device ??

Perhaps I'm reading post 11&12 incorrectly but I wasn't running a developer image of 6.2 when I updated to 6.3. It did however, download and install a full system image due to the size being over a gigabyte. There is now an option in developer options entitled "provide full system upgrades" (always install full system images instead of incremental images). That option really has nothing to do with rooted devices specifically but perhaps that's how this was possible. Anyhow, glad it worked. Lost root but that was easily flashed back and it was a simpler method of updating rather than flashing the factory image then flashing root.

Odds are pretty much zero that you will be able to root. Without root, you can't downgrade. All you can do is sideload. You can still use this guide to determine if you can root: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-dete...ersion-and-rootability-on-first-setup-screen/
If you can't root, you can block updates to keep yourself on the oldest version possible to improve your chances of being compatible with a future root method. Update blocking guide here: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-setup-a-new-fire-tv-without-blocking-root/
what to do first? imo Return it or cancel your order then get one imported from the US (pre-rooted)
Works out roughly same price.
Unless of course you don't need root, but there is so much potential with this thing rooted.

You will need root for the storage side. But I think the XBMC launching immediately side you can just use the SPMC flavor of Kodi which comes with a launcher. And I think there are some other options for that too...
Sections 4 & 5 will be your best source... http://kodi.wiki/view/Amazon_Fire_TV#Bypassing_Amazon_Home

Sorry I think I got two posts mixed up.. Need this info... Where did you buy the FTV from & did you try to block the IP's before it updated ??
Either way... US/UK/GER. If your FTV has upgraded to latest & greatest FW. You are all in the same boat. There is no downgrade or any other method to root at this time. But you should still be able to launch XBCM at the start of your FTV.
So here are my 2 cents as a "casual" user of the Fire TV. By casual I mean non-rooted.
I use my Fire TV every day. I use it to watch Netflix and I use it to watch streams on Twitch.TV via SPMC App.
If I ever want to watch a movie that I downloaded, I watch it via SMB. I have a folder on my computer where I put the movie files and stream it from there.
I don't feel like I'm missing much that I don't have root...

There is no way to downgrade or root that version of firmware currently, you could try network sharing your music and videos from a PC via SMB to xbmc, that works perfect.

There is a 1080P HD YouTube MOD on xda which works very well on Fire TV especially when you have a keyboard like Logitech K400r.
No rooting required for either one.
OK thanks.
Now... i have block the Amazon Update service on my Router.
BTW: Youtube MOD on XDA?
Can i use the YT Version with Android app from my smartphone too share the Video on AFTV? Keyboard on my bedroom is lil bit Fail i think.
I doubt the extra features work properly on Fire TV,but the 1080P part worked fine since the last time I had it before rooting.
You may very likely have subscription and login issues.
If you just use the app to view videos,it will work out just fine.
Thanks for the replies guys

I'm using this youtube app, it's pretty good.
http://www.amazon.de/youtube-com-Yo...e=UTF8&qid=1415794343&sr=8-2&keywords=youtube
I'd say that this keyboard works pretty well as a "bedroom keyboard". Its small, cheap and easy to use. It also has a trackpad.

People in reviews state that this keyboard is working really well with the Fire TV.
*sigh*
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1529715
I found it by searching "youtube mod" in the main forum page for all forums.
Hi!
Couldn't find any threads about this from XDA-OnePlus 3 section.
Anyway I've seen that some people do have ability to watch these videos in 60 fps but mostly if a video is in 60 fps the Youtube app gives only up to 480p resolution.
Only workaround is known to be to use youtube via chrome and request desktop version, where one can choose the 60 fps option.
Does anyone here know about the YT app resolution/framing restrictions or fixes to this particular problem?
As far as I'm aware it's something that OP needs to add support for. That is all I have been able to find on Google.

Drats, can't root because of banking apps have root checks, and while there are root cloaks. It's a hassle.
It has been said that 1+3 is now whitelisted in the Youtube app for 60fps play (hearsay from oneplus forums)
But apparently seems now that the VP9 play has to be whitelisted also, will check that.

Same here (and I came from a Nexus 5 where I unlocked the bootloader first day!)
By the time I had added my bank app, my two-stage authenticators for steam, microsoft...etc etc I suddenly thought about that too.
But in all honesty, with OxygenOS currently I feel no need to root it (yet?) and erasing my whole device just to fix youtube and have to re-setup all of that is a massive pain in the but.

Though slightly off topic, move your authentication to Authenticator Plus (has android wear support too) or Authy, and then even if you wipe your device, you can just re download an app and they will re-sync Authy is free, but i prefer Authenticator plus.
You can always use the OGYoutube app, but you won't be able to login unless you have Xposed installed
I've heard that it is something that Google has to do by adding OnePlus 3 in to their database and OnePlus cannot do anything about that until Google sorts it out. (People with LG G5s and HTC 10s are also having this problem)

Their really isn't too much of a reason. I like a few root utilities e.g to access kernel settings and that's about it. For banking, I know Halifax and lloyds work with systemless root. Like you don't even need to turn it off. Just opened the barclays app as I'm not with them and it doesnt seen to like systemless root, or more it works with systemless root but it detects the SuperSU application. If you can mask that with systemless xposed you should be sound

Yes the infamous whitelisting of Google Corp.
I've contacted Youtube support to specify if the OnePlus 3 truly is whitelisted for 60 fps although not expecting an answer from them. Because on the official oneplus forums, one of the users said that it 1+3 is now whitelisted (as of newest version of the YT app)
But it still doesn't work so either the user is wrongly informed, youtube support lies or VN9 - decoding must be whitelisted also. Or I'm way too far in the speculation swamp and the problem lies somewhere else.

It should be whitlisted by now or at least in some regions I guess?
I'm getting 1080p 60fps on the stock youtube app running OOS 3.2.2
I've had the same issues but ever since the 3.2.1 update that came out 3 weeks ago, I have been able to view 1080p60 videos. I had to clear app data and the cache a couple times but it works for me.
I watch a lot of gaming vids in 60fps so having to watch them in 480p for a while was maddening.

Hello,
I have the Samsung S20 Ultra and I'm extremely impressed with it. However I'm paranoid about the integration with Google and the tele-metrics.
The phone is amazing and makes my iPhone 11 feel like 4 years old, the battery is better, the screen, it's fast - the first time I've considered switching full time.
What is the best way to improve privacy on this device?
Is there a way to install xLuaPrivacy, or it root needed?
Is there a custom ROM that has privacy features?
Is there a firewall I can use to control traffic out?
I'm a little out of date with the development world as I last had a Samsung Note 4.

There are private dns and VPN options built into the device (at least the unlocked ones), which you can point at any service you want, so you just need to find one that suits your specific needs or run your own at home (which you can do easily with even the cheapest Raspberry Pi and the free Pihole app). It's always best to use this method rather than local software - it's less resource intensive, doesn't require root, and gives you more assurance that things are working the way you think they are.
As above, pihole & dns.adguard.com
For maximum security, do not root the phone.
And put the apps you feel that require more security on secure folders. That's an extra layer of protection there. There is a dedicated chip for encryption and security on the s20 just for the purpose of security and privacy.
If u know what u are doing, you can even root the phone, miss out on knox and secure folders, but install other more interesting stuff like firewall to control what apps get to use internet.
For me, secure folders, vpn is good enough.
I love the extra privacy of the secure folders.. It has its own phone book, phone app.. It's like a second phone in there and not accessible from outside.
And you can hide many things in there Including apps. Just rmb to switch off notifications from the app in secure folders..
I have a wife that loves digging through my phone.. You can customize the secure folder name and icon. I even put it on my app drawer.
You can also freely move stuff in and out of secure folders.

If you want to get away from Google, then you need a Google-free phone. Something that runs LineageOS. Of course, installing LineageOS requires rooting, which also compromises security to a degree. So it is a trade-off. But if you are *really* paranoid about Google tracking you, then you need to get rid of everything Google, including Google Play Services. And the only way to do that is by using a phone without Google Play Services preinstalled.
xPrivacyLua requires Magisk, which requires unlocking the bootloader. If you have a Exynos model, then you can unlock the bootloader. If you have Snapdragon, then you can't. And any software firewall will require access to system files, which is impossible without root.

Agreed. I use Pi-hole at home, and dns.adguard.com as my default DNS. Both are very effective at blocking ads, but neither are comprehensive solutions for extremely privacy-focused individuals.

This is OT, but if your wife (or anyone else) is constantly snooping your phone, then there are obviously trust issues that should be addressed.
I use adguard + nordvpn + dns to block all ads and to control the Internet filtering better.
With ADB commands you can uninstall all bloatware and unnecessary stuff or disable them with package disabler Pro.
I'm on snapdragon and waiting for root release so I can use more privacy apps with magisk/xposed.

Any ideas which filter blocklist is stopping my S20U from checking for firmware updates?
If I set private DNS back to automatic it works fine, using nextdns kills it

Disable blocklists one at a time until you can check firmware again, and you'll have the answer.

Odd, I've been using nextdns for over a month and on 2 June I was able to download & install ATE6 (the Australian releases are always slowwwww ...).
You can look at your nextdns logging to see what's being blocked when you try an update. The results are pretty much live; I used the logging to work out what was causing an app problem and whitelisted a few sites based on the blocked results in the log.
Is the beta rootable thru the usual method? Or did I need to download a beta or canary version of Magisk?
Rooted the beta thru canary version of Magisk. The beta is definitely not a daily driver at this point. Almost all Google apps won't stay open. They just close, even in safe mode. Also, getting lots of random reboots.
Edit: Removing canary magisk has caused most of the issues I was experiencing to stop.
Yeah, get rid of that app or keep that app and use mirror versions of the Google Apps and manually update those as they come available. Google Play once it detects any one app on a huge list of "risky" apps Google will shut it down for "security " reasons, they have been known to blacklist accounts and or devices and completely wash any account attached to it for violation of "their piss poor security provisions") not sure how that's legal and it's completely b.s but whatever. There are all kinds of ways around it, it all boils down to, knowing what your doing, what to look for and basically manipulating the Google Apps or play store, it's really about how important is it to ya, because all the work around are time consuming and a pain in the ass at best, hope that helps?

I've been rooting my phones since I first got a Razr. I have never had an issue with Google's security. My guess is since we have to use a canary version of Magisk, it has got some bugs that need to be squashed
A majority of the issues is Google, it started around the first of the year, they are playing I'm your daddy and you will comply games. Samsung is getting ready at some point in the future to wash their hands of Google/Android and do their own thing over it and other issues. Google has gotten to big for their pee pants and all of us have started feeling the backlash of Google and their big daddy fight

Well, if Google is gonna start acting like Apple might as well get an iPhone
Using beta Android and rooted it using the canary method. It's behaving pretty stable. On the first beta my phone was crashing and bootlooping (at lockscreen) as I had enabled the media resumption feature. But I was able to disable it from safe mode. But since beta 1.5 (June 17 update) it's working fine too.
Only issue I'm seeing (not necessarily to this update) I'm unable to have more than 2-3 apps in memory. They reload everytime. I guess 4Gb ram is too less

How did you load the beta, system update or flash factory image? I enrolled in the beta program and did the system update.

I was on a custom rom. So I had flashed a factory image and then a OTA for 1.5 beta.

At some point, I will clean flash and see if that helps. I only use root for ad blocking and the non-root methods aren't very good

Just simply go under settings to "Network & Internet --> Advanced (Or "More Connection Settings" on other phones) --> Select Private DNS mode --> Private DNS Provider Hostname --> type the following: dns.adguard.com and hit save. You are done! Now you have system-wide Ad blocking on all apps. It's that simple. No need for root or anything else. I've tried this on my Note 10 + 5G and my Pixel 3 XL and it works like a charm.

I had already added adguard in the private dns settings. While it does block ads, using energized pro with root is much more effective at blocking ads.
I did a clean install of Android 11 Beta and rooted again thru canary Magisk. Same issues with Google apps closing or acting sluggish. I decided to turn on Magiskhide for all things google and that fixed the issue. Looks like Google is clamping down harder on Magisk users

Installed the factory image (less -w) of 1.5 and latest canary. No issues at all with Google apps or any apps actually. Apparently its case by case.

Could be. My Pixel has been plagued with issues since I got it. Bought it off Swappa. The funny thing is if I revert to 9, the phone runs smooth.
I'm on beta and flashed the latest canary over the weekend. No issues to report with any app so far.

It's Android 11 working ok for "daily driver"? my concern it's for my banking apps my country has really really bad devs, and take like 10 months to fix stuff hahaha but it's reliable for a daily driver? i don't mind random crash times to times, and i guess is a "small" upgrade from android 10, I will wait next month the next beta

It's great for me. Signal strength took a bit of a hit, but otherwise no real issues that I can see.
For what it's worth to anyone wanting to try the beta 2 root, it doesn't work. After fastboot flashing the canary magisk (app-debug.apk) the digitizer stops working on boot. I'm guessing topjohnwu removed the other apk for that reason, but save yourself the effort until he gets the other apk out.
Edit: I was able to get past the "beta warning" popup, by plugging in a mouse, but outside of that workaround, the digitizer still doesn't work. Root DID take, but only with the digitizer caveat.
Greetings All,
New to this community, running a Moto Z2 Play (albus), with stock Android 8, which was the last update available to me. Here we are 5 years later and the phone is still in amazing condition but I'm having trouble with the PlayStore telling me "this version isn't available for your device", and the older the phone gets the more apps I learn no longer support it. So I learned how to sideload apps (like Microsoft office, OneNote etc) but I figure that the writing is on the wall unless I upgrade Android.
After a quick google search I learn you can root your phone and there is an Android 11 image called Lineage OS 18.1 ... which sounds pretty sweet. BUT after additional searches, I'm reading so many cons about rooting a phone.
What's really at stake? I don't have any warrantee to void, I also figure if I brick the device I was probably going to buy a new phone sooner than later anyways.
Questions: If I install Lineage OS 18.1 successfully...
Will the Play Store and Apps continue to update, or will I stop receiving notifications regarding available updates? Or am I forever stuck with sideloading?
If I don't install G Apps is this bad? I don't use stock Google Apps, I've opted to use the Microsoft equivalent like Outlook for email and calendar... or do I still need to install Google Apps to gain the ability to layer Microsoft products on top?
Why is there so much negative talk about malware infection with rooted phones? If I'm not downloading and installing apps constantly, the risk would still be no more threatening than it is now correct?
I heard that Moto mods stop working, no biggie - I never used any of them anyways (I thought the included LCD Micro projector was cool, but ask me how many times I've actually used it = 0). While discussing moto stuff, would the gestures still work? I do like shake for camera, and the flip upside-down for silencing the ringer but I could learn to live without them.
Would the camera still work? Its probably the only real feature I use that I couldn't live without.
Are there any apps that would realize the phone is rooted and refuse to run? Some searches told me that security apps may not like a rooted phone. Does rooting it affect Microsoft Authenticator app?
I mean what's really at stake? My phone is fighting to be relevant for the few select apps I use (mostly Microsoft stuff) and I don't play games.
It looks like win-win, unless I'm missing something really important.
Thoughts?
Firs of all Flashing a rom doesn't actually count as root but some apps (will refuse to work) will detect an unlocked bootloader or something like that if you install the LineageOS rom

there is also Pixel Experience and Dot OS roms to flash (I already test both) so:
when it comes to Pixel Experience:pros:
Stock "clean" Rom
Android11 so your phone will have access to the apps you said refuse to work on Android8 also the phone will be detected as a Pixel 5 by Google Services.
all Google apps and support out of the box for basically everything you would normally use on a stock phone
somehow with this rom the apps wont/never detect any unlocked bootloader unless you install Magisk
unlock 64-bit and use all 4GB of RAM so it perform just better than stock rom with the same or even slightly better battery performance
MOTO MODS support
Google Camera support out of the Box
cons:
there is basically no cons of using this rom unless you want to root it.
somehow this rom is the most unestable when it comes to install magisk addons and slide load things cuz it can randomly brick/bootlop by just accessing to the custom recovery TWRP. Could also be a fault of my phone but I doubt it..
Dot OS:
pros:There is a GAPPS version of this rom and it basically has all the same pros as Pixel Experience
this is by far the most customizable and beatiful rom when it comes to UI personalization
cons: and also the reason I avoid using it
huge battery drain even on idle whithout GAPPS installed

That is the rom I actually use
Lineage OS wont have installed the Play Store/any Google Play Service/related app.., out of the box but
- you can actually slide load the pico opengapps package just after install the rom using TWRP so:
you will have the same support and features of Google Play services that the Pixel Experience rom has (like streaming to a nearby device, gps auto location, sync accounts/passwords/contacts, find my device, updates notification, install new apps, etc), heck opengapps even add out of the box support for nfc payment
pico version of open gapps will just install the Play Store and no other Google app so LineageOS remains very stock and lightweight.

As I said you can install pico gapps which are a very lightweight version of Google Play services without compromising any feature the stock version has, also the battery drain of picogapps package is barely noticeable comparing it with stock gapps

Magisk(is the only recommended method of rooting these days) is pretty safe, it even has a Github repository. As you said unless your a noob and dont even know what are you installing you can get infected even on a stock phone..

Yes the camera will work normally, if you dont like the camera app LineageOS include you can always install the Gcam (support out of the box if you install opengapps)

Sadly Google Play services will detect LineageOS as a rooted rom even if you dont root it so any bank app, streaming apps like Netflix, CrunchyRoll, etc., won´t work.
Though Microsoft app will work even if you dont have gapps installed (except lite versions) and I think Microsoft apps dont detect root and even if they do you can easily bypass that by using Magisk deny list. As for Microsoft Au I confirmed it does not detect root

Yes, is a win-win, specially because LineageOS have the best battery performance of the three roms I listed before and you can make it more efficiente by installing the Stratosphere addon for Magisk by CRANKV2
