What is contained in "Other" Storage? - Honor 7X Questions & Answers

My dad just got an Honor 7X yesterday and asked me to help him set it up. Today while I was checking out the storage, I noticed 2gb of storage used by "other". I tried to tap it but it didn't do anything. What is contained in this section of storage and can it be deleted?

Try This..

Most likely files within your internal storage that don't exactly correspond with the the other categories. For example, I have about 90 apps backed up in my internal storage from Titanium Backup. And I have a few TWRP Backups too.

check for folders called Lost.Dir
If present, just delete them.
if not, then Perform a factory reset, sometimes a phone/Card 'Leaks' Memory, I don't have the Knowledge to explain it to you, but it was a recurring problem on my Satio a few years ago.

This happened to mine too. I already transfered sd contents to pc and reformatted the sd partition and transferred back to sd card and i gained 3gb from 5gb free to 8gb which was great but woke this morning to have lost another 1gb overnight. I thought i had solved it but obviously not. Hope this gets sorted soon.

Yes, thats a strange SD behavior, but this happens very often here with HOX.
The only working way yet, is to backup your SD onto PC, then format your HOX SD from PC.
Reboot and if the phone does not recognize the SD then format it over phone directly.
After that put your backup back.
You should be fine then.
Good luck!
The problem is that after files deletion their space goes to the bad sectors - just run chkdsk to see this. Seems problem with internal SD driver or something like this

Are you saving larger files like pictures, video, games, etc. To your internal? Maybe time to go through and do some cleaning and change camera settings to save to external sd card...move stuff from internal to external and just be aware of where you download stuff
Disk Usage is a good app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.diskusage&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5nb29nbGUuYW5kcm9pZC5kaXNrdXNhZ2UiXQ..
It will graphically show you what is using the storage space.
It helped me the other day when I realized some app had made 1.5 Gb of thumbnails on my internal storage.
The Android folder takes up a lot of room. Like the person above said download disk usage or android tuner/system tuner..http://bit.ly/10ccwQw
..Also if it is your sdcard/Android folder. try JB ExtSD App Binder. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021049

I deleted some files last night I had around 600mb of free space, then this morning when I woke up. A warning message on the notification bar said storage system memory low. I went to the storage setting, the internal storage available space is zero!.
All my photos are saved in the external SD card, music are in the external SD card
Don't know what is happening, any ideas.
I will transfer the CWM backups into the external SD card, I will check if the problem still presists.

I've been reading a lot of good feedback with TWRP. I like to try it, how I get TWRP
What is the file size of your CWM backups?
Presently the file size of my CWM backup are more than >1GB, before it was just maybe less than 100mb.
I don't what was is causing this. Has I unknowingly chnage a setting?
This is probably the reason why I am running out of space.

I believe when u did your factory reset you forgot to format /system and /data. (Most likely (/data) and its probably media and other apps and files that have left their files on your phone from your previous run.

How would you know what would be safe to delete from that? I seem to have 2 backups there holding quite a bit of space, or would it be best to transfer to my sd card?

Well, /data/media/clockworkmod are nandroid backups you've made in recovery.. So, if you have newer versions stored on your SD card there would be no need to keep them; otherwise, definitely move them to your SD card.

Mine worked, I used root explorer (the paid version) and it gave me the option to transfer, took 5 minutes to move each file, roughly 3.6gb each, now my internal storage went from 1.4gb to 7.63 :good: and I am also having success with apps2sd, but on the international rom that supports it.

[Q] Wheres my space going?

Hello guys,
This might seem like an idiot question but I totally confused here
My internal note 2 memory says 3.19GB free of 10.4GB. I am trying to clean my space so I plugged the note 2 to my pc on WIndows 8.1.
I selected all the files and folders in the memory and checked their size which summed up to only 3.24GB! I am really trying to find out whats taking so much space. Should I connect my Note II to Linux and check or how do I find out the total contents of thiis internal memory??
Please help me!
Thanks

As about this,
This is exactly what I would be keeping as my last option. Essentially wiping internal memory is almost equal to factory reset, something I don't want to do unless I don't have any other choice..
Any way of of checking whats taking the memory without formatting would be great
Thanks

In Titanium Backup app you find the exact memory stats devided in system and internal. To optimize internal mem push as many apps to ext sd as you can.
Besides: From Windows/PC you normally can't see hidden or system files.
For further information (eg more space in system) feel free to ask.

Hello,
Thanks for your insight. I am aware of the Windows dilemma hence was trying to get through using Linux but I could not :crying:
However I am already using the Titanium Backup app.. I have pushed almost all possible apps to external memory however I came across a problem where the majority data and memory are still being taken up on the internal memory by that app. Clearing Google Camera, Chaton and Camera Awesome's data, I almost got a GB in internal memory!
Speaking of this I have run into a very weird problem. :silly:
after rooting, I force transferred many apps to external memory. Since this Every time I restart my Note II its forgets my default launcher
Any idea what screwed this up?

You can't move or force all apps to ext sd, especially system or system related apps, so I recommend to reinstall your rom and try to move step by step, so you can revert back by only changing one app back to int. I remember an app which forces apps to ext and also with that app it is recommended to change quite a descent amount of apps.

Your problem can be related to apps that uses root access - this type of apps leaves a lot of trash even after uninstalling, so I recommend you to use only those apps, that are really needed.

[Q] Free space in internal memory

Hi there
I have a serious problem with my S4 Mini Duos GT-I9192. The problem is that the free internal memory space is wrong. At the moment it's showing about 1GB free space, but I confirmed my installed apps and it's impossible I have 5GB of installed apps. In fact I have about 2.5GB of installed apps, then I shoud have about 3GB of free space.
I made a test, plugged the device in the computer and it shows I really have 1GB free in internal memory, after that I selected all folders into it and get properties, and it shows 2.4GB size. (you can see in attached images)
My question: If the internal memory has 5.39GB and my all files has 2.4GB used space, I should have 2.99GB free space, not just 1GB free!!! Where is this lost space??? I need it, because I want install apps and games, and at now I cant!!
My andriod version is 4.4.2 kitkat (not rooted), manually updated from sammobile, but the problem was the same before update. The original version was 4.2 Jelly Bean.
Best regards for all.
You should look for hidden folders with a dot before the name. I think you probably got a big .thumbnails folder. That's a common problem, try searching on google for solutions.

Did u play heavy games in the past? If you uninstall those games, occasionally their cache/data remain on your device. Go to internal sdcard > Android > Obb and look for any folders that correspond to the apps u used previously. Delete them and see if that solves your problem. I had this problem once in the past when I uninstalled gta3, the com.rockstargames.XXXX folder remained in the obb folder. I had to manually delete that to free up space.
If that does not work, backup everything u got on your internal sd card onto microsd card/usb drive and wipe internal storage via TWRP recovery.
Try what I suggested. hopefully it works. good luck.

Nope, I don't have old data/obb games in device. As you can see in attached screen capture, I selected all existing folders in my device and get properties, it shows I have 2.5 GB used, the refered space is really lost, maybe in some partition which windows does not recognize...

But wipe what? wipe not used files? I can't do this because all files used, I don't have unused files there. Or this wipe process is something which can find the lost space in device?

No what we meant is : You first copy everything from your internal storage to external sd card or usb drive. Then go to TWRP recovery and choose wipe>Advanced Wipe and select internal storage. Then swipe and your internal storage will be cleaned up off everything. Now you can transfer the backup files from that usb drive or ext sd card back to internal storage.Do not format internal storage via windows pc.
Do that only with TWRP recovery. Good luck.
Have you considered that the internal memory is shared?
Infact the internal sdcard is the folder /data/media.
The S4 mini has the /data partition of 5.4 GB.
So if you have 1 Gb free and 2.4 occupied into internal sdcard (/data/media), maybe you have 2 GB occupied into /data? In particular into /data/app e app-asec? (these folders contain the apks of app installed from play store).

Sorry for late reply. You wont lose installed apps but you will lose those photos, videos and any downloads or documents you have on internal storage. That's the reason I said backup/Copy everything on your internal storage to usb drive/external sd card and then format. Later you can move them back to internal storage and reboot.

Ok, guy, thanks for tip, I'll try this
I've got this problem today. Only 800 MB free in internal SD, but when selected all files/folders they only had 1,2 GB!! Where the hell was the remaining GB?
I've entered the recovery and found a backup in the internal SD. Deleted it and recovered the free space!
2 days ago, I've made a backup to the external SD (waiting for the M10 release!), and it really is there, but I don't know how, the backup was made to the internal SD too!
See if you don't have any backup in the internal SD, but you have to go by the recovery.
