Hi everyone,
I have only 5.96GB space available from 16GB!!
I've read that you can only use about 9.62GB but I don't even have anything close to that!!
I went to the storage option and here is what I see-
Total Space-9.62GB
Applications-327MB
Pictures,Videos-24.00KB
Audio-60.00KB
Downloads-3.16MB
Miscellaneous-43.03MB
Available space-5.96GB
Where are the other few GBs that I am missing?
Thank You

I believe when u did your factory reset you forgot to format /system and /data. (Most likely (/data) and its probably media and other apps and files that have left their files on your phone from your previous run.

I did a reset from CWM twice with everything that I saw that said reset or wipe. And I did a factory reset from the settings menu on the phone and I also formatted the phone storage from my PC. When I open my phone's storage there is nothing on it.
From phone root: /data/media/clockworkmod. See if you have any files there.

Yup, I had backup files I wasn't even aware of. I deleted them and now I have 8.92GB!
Thanks

How would you know what would be safe to delete from that? I seem to have 2 backups there holding quite a bit of space, or would it be best to transfer to my sd card?

Well, /data/media/clockworkmod are nandroid backups you've made in recovery.. So, if you have newer versions stored on your SD card there would be no need to keep them; otherwise, definitely move them to your SD card.

I tried to do that but it kept saying "operation failed" and I had a few backups on my PC so I just deleted them. When you do a back up, do a ext sd card back up and it will put it on your sd card.

Mine worked, I used root explorer (the paid version) and it gave me the option to transfer, took 5 minutes to move each file, roughly 3.6gb each, now my internal storage went from 1.4gb to 7.63 :good: and I am also having success with apps2sd, but on the international rom that supports it.

How do I fix this? I've checked the lost.dir folder and it is empty. I am not using a rooted device if it matters.

Backup the files and format the disk then copy everything back.
As above. Its fixed in the latest 1.29.401.11 so either root and flash a rom on that base or have to suck it up until you get OTA im afraid!

I've got the same issue, when i use disk usage app it shows 12GB+ of "system files" that's ridiculous but im now formatting my sd so will report back if it works or not.
As for rooting. Im not to keen on rooting just yet as the phone is still new and covered by warranty

you don't need to root to flash an RUU as long as you use the correct one depending on location/carrier
Copy files from SD card to your computer, Format the SD card in FAT32, copy items back onto SD card and done.
You shouldn't have to worry about it happening again.

My phone is showing +19GBP of misc. Files on my 16gb device. Any ideas what's up?

It could be backup files if you have done several nandroid backups (check backup folders)?
Or go to recovery, delete backups, restart phone - check if it helped, if yes, do 1 backup.
Other than that it might need a factory reset.

I believe the problem is that it says 19gb of misc files which is more than his internal memory can handle, not that he has to many misc files.

That was my interpretation as well, though I don't have a clue why. Try swapping another card to see if it reads correctly
I'd say it's because he is plugged into his pc and is reading files on his pc through his phone, that or a 32gig chip fell in his phone during 16gig assembly

That is most likely not to happen as the gs3 has a special file that's able to deffirientiate between int., Ext., And mass storage so even if he was to plug it into he's pc and it hiccups then it would see it as a mass storage with multi storages separate if he has any others installed.
Now back to topic, most likely it may have something to do with ure back up files specially if u nandroid, most tell u to nandroid to internal sd, and when u recover from clockwork mod usually what happens since it's in internal memory it erase itself after nandroiding but the Data still remains hidden, and if u do it more and more over time it built up.
Other reason could be that if ure on a custom rom and u flash new roms or re flash whatever saved info usually doesn't erase even if u wipe data through cwm and it remains as clutter. Only way is to factory reset, usually that fixs the problem.
So I went back to stock system because I needed to unlock my phone and I placed some files on my Internal SD, then installed PA 2.10 and when i try to access my Internal SD its completely new, my old stuff disappeared. Any suggestions on what i did wrong or how to access my files?
Another thing to mention, on the Internal Storage (when i plug in my phone to my PC) it says I only have 10GB of space out of 12, even though my "new" directory doesn't contain even 100mb of data.

This is a great reason why it's a good idea to invest in a $10 micro sd card. Did you format /system and/or /data?
They are stored in a folder call 0 now. Look in there. 4.2 rooms move all your data files there. You can find them all in there and move back if you like

You can use adb and navigate to /data/media.
Or you can get a file manager, navigate to /data/media, then move all your files to the 0 folder then do whatever you need to after.

Hi I have been dealing with this problem for awhile now and still haven't been able to find a fix (without rooting). After I updated JB from Kies when it came out my internal and memory card folders are completely different? Also it says I only have 11.95GB total in my internal memory. The internal memory folder says :sdcard0. And my memory card folder is: extSdCard? I'm not rooted. Does anyone know how to get the folders back to the regular names ext sd ect? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

That is how it they are formatted now. It's not a mistake or anything being messed up. I guess I'm just used the internal being sdcard0 and ex sd card being extsdcard. I don't use myfiles much. I use root explorer and it can displays it as storage and then inside that folder is extsdcard and sdcard. Or there is a fodler just called sdcard for the internal in the root of the file system.
What problem is it creating, other than just being different than you are used to ?

Yhea, i'm having some trouble too. After the update my extCard is totally mess-up. The folders with the pictures and songs are not recognized, and the Gallery doesn't show hundreds of pictures, but i see if i use a file manager. I've synced all my songs so far, but with the pictures is a mess: seems also the format is not recognized anymore and with Kies i'm not seeing a way for put the pictures in the new folder named "Photo". It's really frustrating.

I cannot use the Apps2sd app anymore. And basically I would just like to be like before the update.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
i'll try not to rant too hard but Kies and OTA firmware updates are a joke. you are essentially dirty flashing one rom over another with no real clearing of caches, no resetting, no way for all the programs to regroup, rebuild and run on the system hardware/software properly. the thing about dirty flashing is, it sticks well with some devices but generally not with many others. you'll see these types of issues many times among the avid flashers and those that must have the latest release of a developers rom.
i would recommend backing everything up, booting into stock recovery, wiping data/factory reset and wiping cache. if you decide to perform another update via kies in the future, i would do this procedure before AND after the update.
yes, you have to start over when you perform these sorts of actions but you have to ask yourself, are you happy with how your device is performing now (before the update)? is it worth starting over? (it might be if you're going to run on the updated OS for a year or so) and how well do you want it to perform after you install the update?
cheers
EDIT: i just assume everyone accesses recovery and download mode so i didnt post the button combo. recovery is: Volume Up + Home + Power. release just the power button when you get a vibrate.

This is normal for a 16GB SGS3. 16GB is advertised but actual formatted available space is less. 11.95GB is right on par. This is the case for just about all devices that have memory that is writable, including hard drives on a computer.

Any particular reason why you are using Apps2sd? $10 to $20 will land you an external memory card with huge amounts of space (32GB at least). This is plenty to store music, photos, and other misc. files. And even with a ton of apps installed to internal, you still should have ample space left over. There is just no good reason to use Apps2sd on this phone as it has so much internal memory. If this is just to keep you from losing data, then I would suggest rooting and using an app such as Titanium Backup as it makes it super easy to restore apps and the corresponding data after anything that requires a factory reset.

As stated by xBeerDroidx, factory reset from stock recovery. You will have to re-setup your device but it will be a one time frustration for now until the next update.

Actually i did.
After the update, without factory reset, everything was (almost) fine… except a strange malfunction of the Gps (lock signal lost after a while) and sporadic reboot without reason. For the Gps I’ve found here the solution (NV Rebuild), but for the reboot… I wasn’t sure about it. So I decided for a factory reset. After that my ext card, with the ICS paths, was not recognized. So bucked up everything, format the ext card and let Kies sync my files and create all the folders needed from JB: Camera Photo Video for pictures, and media for the music. Now I’m let’s say 90% ready to go… I’m curios to test especially the Gps.

Are you saving larger files like pictures, video, games, etc. To your internal? Maybe time to go through and do some cleaning and change camera settings to save to external sd card...move stuff from internal to external and just be aware of where you download stuff

It will graphically show you what is using the storage space.
It helped me the other day when I realized some app had made 1.5 Gb of thumbnails on my internal storage.
The Android folder takes up a lot of room. Like the person above said download disk usage or android tuner/system tuner..http://bit.ly/10ccwQw
..Also if it is your sdcard/Android folder. try JB ExtSD App Binder. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021049

I deleted some files last night I had around 600mb of free space, then this morning when I woke up. A warning message on the notification bar said storage system memory low. I went to the storage setting, the internal storage available space is zero!.
All my photos are saved in the external SD card, music are in the external SD card
Don't know what is happening, any ideas.
I will transfer the CWM backups into the external SD card, I will check if the problem still presists.

What is the file size of your CWM backups?
Presently the file size of my CWM backup are more than >1GB, before it was just maybe less than 100mb.
I don't what was is causing this. Has I unknowingly chnage a setting?
This is probably the reason why I am running out of space.
