I am trying to decode a serial number to find if it is the correct model number. Is there a way to do it?
Reason behind this is there are lots of phone on ebay that are Unlocked to GSM however they are actually Sprint or Verizon phone that has been rooted to make it look like T Mobile, hence you miss some important bands.

It doesn't mean that the device is rooted, root access is applied at software level and not on firmware level. it can run stock software without root. It does mean that the device is made S-OFF in order to convert it from CDMA to GSM firmware, i'm not into CDMA - GSM conversions but i believe it comes with a certain risk of bricking the device.
If you need a GSM device i would only go for an original one, not a converted one. Your question about the serial number stands, i don't know if there is a public record of those numbers.

I'm not sure that this is any help since I don't see that it provides what you're looking for, but it should explain how the serial number is built.

Just bought via ebay Gnex Verizon but really need some answers here..
1. Please info if Verizon Gnex is an inject type or RUIM type? because there is microSIM slot available
2. I'm checking through adb shell using "su getprop" that the parameter
[ro.cdma.home.operator.alpha]: [Verizon]
[ro.cdma.home.operator.numeric]: [310004]
Anyone know if this mean the operator is locked? and please someone help me how to change these to match my local operator.
Thanks a lot.
really need help here...any links related or anything that sounds similar would be very much appreciated. thanks
vzw stays on vzw.
sorry you can only activate it on vzw.
I may be wrong here, but as long as your CDMA operator is willing to activate a device that is not their own (which doesn't happen at all any longer in any North American carrier), then I think it may be possible.

the carrier has to be willing to also flash/change a bunch of items on the phone itself (which they arent anymore really). to do this, you have to have a expensive piece of software ($99) to even complete the process.

These guys here have made progress. From what I read, phone and text work fine on other carriers, but they are still working on data.
@Zepius @efrant, dunno if it will work or not...but it is a start.
many thanks to you guys...and xda
Hi, i am new to xda and i am totally unaware of its policies rn, so pardon me if i did something wrong
The question is how to check the international version of used htc m8 before buying from market ? Because i m fond of flashing roms, and previosly i owned korean devices, and usually there is huge variety of custom roms for international varients , so i want to buy an international variant of m8 , so i was wondering if any expert could help me out ? i have searched alot but i have no idea about MID or CID, i mean how am i supposed to run adb while buying Guidence would be much appreciated . Thanks
When you restart the phone, hold pressed volume down (same if you turn it on). It will enter bootloader menu and there it will have firmware number. It should be 6.14.401.xx (can't remember the last two digits, but they are not important for your need).

Just put the IMEI of the phone you are looking at https://imei24.com/imei_check/HTC/
It will tell you all the details of the phone where it was originally sold and whether it is locked, unlocked, international. carrier. everything.
I've bought many M8 phones by just checking online through their IMEI information.
Every M8 has Model ID written on the bottom back on the phone under the antenna line. for example mine is 0P6B100 which is International/European MID.
I've seen phones with the back completely cleaned/changed. Also I've seen Chinese/Korean phones looking exactly like M8 from outside. Even the software same. But they had some strange lag. When I checked IMEI then I found out the truth.
In short, the device's frame can be changed. Software can be changed but if the IMEI is genuine it will tell you the truth.
Hello everyone,
I bought the OP7T international version HD1900 but I didn't realize that it does not have the american certification FFC ID, as the HD1905 does. The problem is that because of that I cannot use my OP7T HD1900 in my country because that particular model is not authorized. So my plan is to somehow by software change the model reference ID of my OP7T from HD1900 to HD1905 so my operator now let me use my phone to make calls. I already rooted my phone for this purpose and is currently running Oxygen OS 10.0.8HD65AA.
Does anybody know if is this possible? Thx!
If they're finding out the model number from the IMEI, you're not going to be able to change what is on their database.

Thx. Since that is uncertain, I still would like to give it a try to change the model number.

If you're going into a store and they're looking at the number on the phone's screen you can maybe change that, but if you're calling them up to do this then it's almost guaranteed it's being determined from the IMEI and you can't do anything about it.

Thank you so much. I didn't know that the IMEI somehow "encodes" your brand and model number within it. Cheers!

No problem. I don't know the details, but there are websites that buy phones that can tell the model/ storage/ colour just from the IMEI, so it's definitely data that exists in some big database.
Im not 100% sure... but pretty sure that if you install the American firmware it also changes the model #
... @ least in the settings on that device... now obviously it would conflict with the websites that have all the information on that particular device via the IMEI... but in your settings it should change The model number also.. I'm like 99% sure this was the case when I bought the T-MOBILE version of the 6t and converted it to the international version.. If I were you I would flash the North American version..UPDATE Check this thread... I think it should answer your question

Tl:dr Verizon is showing sm-n975u-wc as my model number after flashing from xaa to vzw firmware. this doesnt show a device picture in my account.(neither did sm-n975u1
I wanted to buy the galaxy watch4, but verizon said that my device didnt support number sharing. I bought my device from spectrum mobile and paid it off before bringing my device to verizon on unlocked firmware. I thought it might have had something to do with the firmware, so i flashed it to verizons firmware, but this gives me a model number of sm-n975u-wc, still with no picture and ability to enable number sharing. Any ideas? i really dont need to upgrade phones, but also dont want to spend 400$ upfront for the watch
nevermind, i guess i just needed to give it some time. all good now
What do I look for in the About Phone section to see if my 2 XL is a Verizon model, I bought used off Swappa? My OEM unlocking in Developers is grayed out and trying to see which phone I have. Is it in the Build number? Understand the Verizon models can't be unlocked, but would like to try if it's a Google model. Thanks...
While not an absolute, if the box is missing French Canadian information near the barcodes on the box AND you have a fifth barcode with a SIM number, you have a Verizon device.
A better alternative is to simply run the device's IMEI through an IMEI check site. If you see some variation of "VZN" in the model number, you have a Verizon device.
Last, a quick alternative is to try unlocking the unit. Successful or not, you'll know.
Well I did contact the seller and he did say he originally bought from a Verizon store so appears I am SOL...
