[Q] Is it the Battery or is it something else?

Hi there.
My Mother has a One V which she is really happy about. But recently she says that it has been draining the battery so fast. At first i didnt really believe it (you know old people and tech), and asked if she had charged it correctly. She then told me that the charging process was also quite strange.. She had plugged it in one night, and the phone displayed that it was charging.. Then 8 hours after, in the morning it had only charged 2% ! This doesnt happen all the time, but only some times.
Now she has given it to me and hope that i can fix it. At first im just going to factory reset it, even though i dont think that is the problem. But i have noticed that what she is telling me is true to some extend. I have had the phone sitting on the table all night. No simcard and no nothing.. It had only used about 5%, but as soon as i began using it, to take backup and prepare for the reset oh boy.. It uses 1% in merely seconds! Approx 26 seconds per 1%!
I think this is rather strange and im unsure if the battery is the problem.. Do you guys have any ideas ?

Oh and i have to say that the phone is running newest stock software. It has never been rooted or anything like that.

Well, the charger port is probably bad. My first htc one m8 and my droid incredible 2 both have weak ports on them from the factory. Send it in for warranty and say nothing < about a possible bad charging port if it still has warranty. And, if nothing Less try a brand new charger, and see if that one works and if it's loose when it's plugged in. If it Is loose with new charger it's a bad charger port.

The first time this happened my One V dropped from 100% to 27% in 20 minutes! And just like it randomly happens it randomly goes; battery consumption goes back to normal after a day or two.
A possible reason is the charger and USB cable that is used. My cable is worn out so that might be why charging is slow but it doesn't explain why the battery drains so fast even when the phone is disconnected from the charger. So the only reasonable explanation would be some hardware problems in the battery pack.
But this is all just me guessing... I don't know for sure.

It could be the charger port. I tried cleansing it with a toothpick (heard dust could be the problem), but the problem persists

The problem here is that it happens every second time or so the phone is charged at the moment. But i have bought a new battery and will try and change it. Ill write here how it goes and if there is a improvement, so that you know where the problem relies if you are thinking about doing the same.

Same problem here. Every few months the battery drops from > 50% to 2% or so. This happens within some minutes and my phone gets really hot.
But normaly I use it with a 2 amp charger and I think this happens more often if I use chargers with 1 amp.
Edit: This happened for me with every rom I used.

I changed the battery two days ago, and i can already feel a huge improvement.. 8 hours ago i took it out from the charger. Data and Bluetooth has been on all day. Been browsing a little, and sent som SMS and stuff like that.. 65% now.
The conclusion must be that in my case at least, it was a battery hardware fault.

I'm also thinking about replacing my battery, was replacing it easy?

Yes it was actually pretty easy. Although i have done it on my One S too, and that was even easier.
Some recommendations: Get your self a repair tool kit before you start. Everything has been so much easier for me after i got that. It is all the money worth it . First i took the plate off at the bottom of the phone (the one where there behind is sim card and sd card). Unscrewed all six screws. Once done you can take all the plastic off the large plastic part (the one below the simcard and sd card when inserted, and covering everything behind the outer cover). This part is also taped/glued, but should not be a problem to get off.
After you have taken that off, use a pry tool to pry the plate open around the camera lens and flash (beware that this plate is also taped together. Unscrew the last screw behind.
Now comes the tricky part. You need another more solid pry tool to pry the lcd/board out from the front. Use the pry tool in between the screen and the cover of the phone, and all the way around. The LCD and board needs to come out from the phones front.
After that the battery becomes visible. There is nothing special to getting the plug out for it as far as i can remember and should just be pulled towards the battery to get it out. Battery is glue to the inside of the phone, but using the solid pry tool you should be able to get it out. If you order the battery i linked to, it comes with new 3M tape.

My One V is retired but since the battery is cheap I will buy one and replace it just in case I ever need the phone as backup.

Strange Charging Issues *Please help!*

I'm at a loss as to what's going on. A few months ago I was changing up my ROMs and went to charge my phone and left the room. When I came back I was smelling that dreaded burning circuit board type of smell. Now none of my stock USB cords work with my stock charger. In fact I have 50 or so USB's and the only one that will still work is an old one from my Samsung device.
Just today I got a quick charge 2.0 and plugged it in and to my surprise it worked! Then about 30 minutes later noticed it was not charging. Hold the phone up to my nose and sure enough I smell a slight burning smell again. Is my device no longer going to be able to charge normally? I can't think of anything else to do. Could it be kernel related? Any help or troubleshooting ideas would be wonderful. Thank you so much guys!

Seems like that is a problem with your phone components not with software.Tell me about your battery life.If you connect your phone to a PC did your phone charge?Did you tried changing your rom with the original one?

Thanks for the reply. PC only would work if the cord being used was one of the 1 or 2 that actually work. I did have a little increased battery drain that seems to be decreasing my battery about 30% or so faster than before. I was going to investigate further, but it wasnt at an alarming rate as of yet. I honestly chalked that up to the ROM. I have Multiboot installed and CM6 is the same...100% hardware issue at this point...just not sure if the root of it started from the kernel or not.
I do have an update though...so it seems the part that burned last night was the final straw and now even the 1 charger that worked won't do anything...seems like I'm dead. Took it into Sprint (I have insurance) and they are going to replace it. Sadly looks like it won't be here until Tuesday. I tweeted Sprint about the issue and they'll be calling me shortly. If my insurance/warranty covers my issue and it's believed to be a defective phone I do not understand why I should be without a phone for 6 days. At the very least give me a loaner...but even that doesn't seem to be the best solution for an issue such as this. Good news is my phone won't take a charge so there's no need for me to try and make sure they can't tell I'm rooted.
Sprint used to be really good about customer service w/ having phones overnighted to your house or in store exchange. Those are distant memories now though.

Ig that helps you.My phone is in the repair store too and a guy from HTC told me that the repair for my phone will last for 40 working days ).So...6 days it's a WONDERFUL period.I am not so lucky as you.

Exceptionally bad battery life.

Now, I know...the M9 has ALWAYS had a reputation for being bad on batteries.
I also know, that Facebook and Messenger are two nasty apps that eat batteries alive.
Saying all of that up front, the battery life on my M9 has very suddenly become VERY bad (even with Facebook and Messenger not installed). I thought it might have been a battery calibration issue, but trying a calibration program out seems to yield no improvement (even in the accuracy of the battery indicator).
So, now, if I'm lucky, I'll get about 2.5hrs of battery life even if the phone is in airplane mode indoors. My battery will get to about 65% and then the phone will shut off. When I try to start the phone, I'll get a 0% indicator sometimes, but after plugging it into the charger, I'll then see about 65% battery instantly.
Is there anything I can do or should I throw in the towel and upgrade to an HTC 10? Things are to the point I can't use the thing when its plugged into the charger!
I was using the last nightly build of CM on the thing for months before it got THIS bad. I thought maybe keeping it plugged into the charger too much was the problem, but wiping the dalvik cache after fully charging might help too... no change. I tired flashing Lineage and the battery life is the roughly the same.
Should I try flashing back to stock or try a firmware upgrade or somekind? I honestly have no clue what to do with this thing.

I honestly believe it's a hardware issue. I've tried most anything and I'm there too! I was just going to buy a lightly used m9, flash my current ROM onto it, and wait for the Pixel 2 (the HTC is looking like a disappointment).

My brother​ had a similar issue with his M8. Sprint refused to acknowledge any kind of hardware issue and insisted that he must have too many apps running, even after a factory reset. He eventually switched to an HTC 10.

I currently have my HTC 10 in for warranty so I have to us my M9 in the meantime. I tried upgrading to a nougat rom only to get terrible battery life. I switched to the santod stock debloated marshmallow and it lasts the day and a couple of hours. I read on the thread that there are no nougat radios for the M9 which causes the battery drain.

I figured it out. It was the battery all along. Replaced the battery, and the phone is getting the best battery life it has ever gotten.

Did you replace it yourself? Was it that hard? My battery will randomly die at 23% sometimes. Debating on replacing it. Can't afford a pixel at the moment.

Yes, I replaced it myself, and your situation sounds VERY similar to mine. It was one of the trickiest operations I have ever done on a phone by far, but the M9 has a few things that make it much easier to do then the M8 for sure (I was dreading having to replace a USB port on my old M8). I replaced the USB port for my M9 while I was in there and also did the thermal mod to help cool the CPU down. I have a very steady hand and some experience doing these types of things, but am by no means a professional.

Only additional note I have is, that the Amazon seller I bought my battery from is now out of stock. A friend of mine who just bought a M9 is ordering a new battery for his, so I can update you with that experience soon. As some people seem to be getting old batteries or batteries that aren't holding a charge even from the vendor I bought mine from. I almost wonder if some scumbags are returning batteries to Amazon saying they didn't use them, but are actually sending back their old batteries!
I did notice while looking for new battery replacements on Amazon the other night, that there does appear to be generic non-OEM replacement options on the market now, where I did not find those at the time I did my replacement. My friend is getting his battery off ebay from a Hong Kong seller, so it will likely be a few weeks before we have it in hand.
I also used this video on youtube as reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYm-2dUW03M I stopped and did the USB board replacement before most of the steps (that is actually quite easy to do by itself). You can watch it to get a REALLY good idea of what you'll have to deal with. I had the Verizon version of the M9 to deal with, so I only had one antenna wire instead of two (most be a different antenna in the VZW version of the phone), and getting the CNC connections back together was harder then ANY of the ribbon cables shown. I had to remove my contact lenses and look at the motherboard really close to see it clearly.

@TheXev Thanks for all of the info. I heard that conducting the battery swap was notoriously tricky. I ended up just buying a m9 for cheap and porting everything over to it... when this battery inevitable dies in 6 months I may give the self-replacement a go (or move on to a Pixel or something).

Just finished replacing my battery this morning. Took me about 45 minutes. I followed this video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDvBvrWN73s&t=180s .... I just hope this will delay me buying a pixel. Expensive!

Glad it worked out for ya.. but on a stranger note... WTF IS UP WITH THAT VIDEO!? lol its EXACTLY the same as mine, only with a different logo, the font was changed from blue to red.... and the music is different but it is otherwise EXACTLY THE SAME. lol

Disassembling and repairing HTC HTV31 Butterfly 3

Heey everyone,
My phone has some serious problems. I'm talking about percentage not showing correctly, because of that the phone will go off at random. As the percentage that is shown (for example 43%) is actually a lot less (it's actually 0%). And when I try to turn it on, the phone must be charging, otherwise the chance of data getting deleted is almost 100% (I think around 85%). And with the data deletion problem comes the storage problem, because the data is probably still on there but not accessible by android or something and therefore my phone can't install updates now(the apps are all stock) even though they were on there the moment the phone shut off.
I hope you guys still understand the situation, but now my actual question
Because these problems are all the cause of a faulty battery, I want to replace the battery with a new one.
I couldn't find replacements for our butterfly 3 phone, but there are ones for the M8, M9 and M9+.
These batteries look very similar and I actually think they are the exact same size and they do have the same connector.
Since so many things are similar between the M9/M9+ and our Butterfly 3, I thought those batteries also fit our phone.
But since taking the phone apart is not easy and of course risky, I would like to ask if anyone here has taken apart a HTC (HTV31) Butterfly 3 before.
If so, could that someone please tell me how this phone can be disassembled and maybe even tell me what the size and the connector of the battery are.
I could of course just buy a new phone, but this phone is the only one on the market(!!!) that fits all my needs. And replacing the battery is cheaper than buying a new one. As I got lucky somehow that I didn't have to pay any taxes or anything when I bought it around 1.5 years ago. And the prices on ebay are definitely higher than back then.
If any of you has some other ideas to solve my problem or has a better phone with almost the same specs, then place say so
PS. If it's possible to use the battery of the M9, then I will try to put a larger capacity battery in it, as this capacity is a bit low.

HTC 10 Half of Display Not Working After Screen Replacement

The battery on my HTC 10 was completely shot and needed to be replaced. I'm a careful person by nature and this being my first phone repair, I bought an extra screen just in case something happened getting it apart. Followed a guide by jerryrigeverything on how to take apart the phone, got the battery replaced, everything seemed to go smoothly. When I went to test the display before screwing everything together, the new screen I installed lit up, but the right half of the display only showed as a repeating segment from the middle of the screen. Thinking the connector was loose, I disconnected and reconnected the display and made sure everything was tight: same problem. I reinstalled the original display, which I made sure had worked after cutting through the adhesive before I disconnected it, and now the old display is also showing the same issue.
The touch screen on the broken side of the display still works, I'm able to type PIN numbers and whatnot even though I can't see them properly. Only thing I can think of is maybe the connection actually got some debris or something inside of it? I don't think I damaged anything, as I was super careful, but it was also my first time opening up a phone.
Sorry for the inefficiently worded post. Any help would be really appreciated.

I have exactly the same issue you describe after my screen replacement (with two new screens) Believing the first was a dud.
I have done many screens/batteries on my m7, m8's previously never having a problem.
I'm currently back to running my M8 and miss my 10!
Anyone reading this and has any suggestions they are all welcome!!

I have been having the same problem. I just tested screen number 4 that has the same exact problem. Is there a specific brand that is known to test well?

I dropped my 10 in water at work...believe it was a salty water at that. It stopped working completely. I opened the phone to check the internal components for damage and I broke the LCD doing so. I replaced the battery and the screen at almost the same time. I think it may have been a week or two apart.
The battery is still working. The screen worked initially but the phone kept getting really hot and the heat kills the phone. I tried keeping it cool at all times which kept it operational. It hasn't been activated since I quickly replaced the phone with another of my lines upgrades. I went back to the phone to check it out and try using it as a replacement for my daughter but the screen no longer works.
The battery charges just fine...the led light indicates that well. I've tried reinstalling it several times with no success getting the screen working again. I tried the original screen to check and I could see light and it was responding but its not usable so I'm stuck with a phone that has a new non-working display. I think the brand was called DIYRepair or similar.
If anyone has encountered this and has advice...I'd be happy to try anything.
