rapid battery drain 8.1 - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Ever since I flashed 8.1 , battery is draining very rapidly. After sending one email just text no attachments, battery went from 100 to 96%. Has anyone else had this issue?

Nope. At least give it a couple of charge cycles to see what's going on. I've noticed no changes since I installed 8.1.

I did, after using GSam Battery to find the problems it was play services and RCSService. So I uninstalled RCSService and cleared data on Google play services and it's been fine since.

Have you by chance used, or are using the magisk module for doze on Google play services?? Seems to work pretty well.

Ah, gotchya. I had no difficulties with stock either. At least for the week I had it before it wasn't stock

I have only unlocked the bootloader. I have no other mods on my phone. I have done a restart and a fresh install of 8.1 and nothing is helping. Nothing is running in the background either. I don't get it

Do you have a weak mobile signal when you are on wifi? I think Google changed the default to be keeping mobile data on even while WiFi is on in 8.1. For me, i have crap mobile signal at my wifi location, so the scanning for a signal might drain my battery. You can change the setting in developer options. Have no idea if it will help though...

I am on 8.1 since 3 days (not rooted), on full charge I have got 7 hours SOT consistently... dont think so the drain has anything to do with 8.1 update..
pls check ur apps

Go into settings/Google/instant tethering and see if it's on. That being on killed my battery life...

I have noticed quite a bit of battery drain since activating the Pixel visual core. .. definitely noticeable loss of battery and especially on the camera.

Adb buddy.
Turn on usb debugging. And get to a PC then,
Adb shell
pm uninstall -k --user 0 <name of package.apk> with out the <>.
If my memory serves me right, it's com.qualcomm.qti.uceShimService.apk for the RCSService
This tells the phone to uninstall said apk for that specific user. And not the entire system. Which root is needed for.
Be mindful. These can come back after a factory reset.

Thanks a lot... Was hoping I didn't need to get on a PC. I feel like we're in a day and age with Android where this shouldn't be necessary.
I discovered an option in developer settings where it seems "keep mobile data on " whole on wifi which I am hoping is the culprit to my battery issues.

It def drops faster since 8.1 not like what the OP is talking about, but over night it uses hardly anything then I can use it half the next day pretty much

I can confirm that battery drain on iOS 8.1 is pretty bad...
on 8.0 i regularly used to get 6.5 to 7 hours SOT, on 8.1 its come down to 5.5 to 6 hours SOT

Verizon - dropping wifi and really bad battery life

Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this or not.... But I am experiencing two major problems with my phone:
1) It periodically just drops wifi. I have great signal strength and none of my other devices (and I have a lot) ever behave this way. And I have seen it happen on other wifi spots as well.
2) This one is even worse. I am not able to get more than about 9-10 hours on a charge. Not using the phone *at all*. When I checked what was using the battery power all I saw was normal google stuff, no app itself directly consuming
Mine is a brand new verizon phone.
anyone else experience these? Worth seeing if I can get verizon (or LG) to replace the phone?
Factory reset and if that doesn't work, exchange for sure.

I disabled all the Verizon apps, including DT Ignite. I have not activated the phone yet (waiting for root or Helium to work), and now the battery usage graph has almost flatlined when not in use.

Just an update after disabling VZW apps, 22 hours, 17% battery drain. This is on a non activated phone, WIFI on, minimal use). Not a great metric, but much better than with them enabled.

Application Manager. Scroll over to "ALL" tab. Click on the individual apps. It should have the option to Disable near the top. Those apps will be moved to the Disabled tab if you should ever want to enable them in the future.
I always factory reset after leaving a store because their first priority is to get the phone into a usable state and they bypass the Google login to start syncing my information.
The first thing I install is Nova Launcher. To disable Apps, I just click and drag to the desktop for "system info" then uncheck "Show Notification", click "Force Stop", then "Disable".
I just clear out the crap out the App launcher. I haven't gone in through Settings > App Manager and disabled any services or background apps.
I've also had (and still have WiFi issues). Just got my phone replaced today from T-Mobile and my WiFi has intermittently cut out a couple times today already. Perhaps its something that will require a software update to fix.

If I'm understanding the articles, it is an app so carriers can install Bloatware after your purchase. Even after a factory reset. The good, the bloatware doesn't have to be installed and part of the factory ROM. The bad, everything else...
According to a post on Reddit, the small update on ATT was to fix 5ghz Wi-Fi issues. Hopefully all carriers push it.

On VZW I do not have any issue with WiFi, I do however have not so great battery life. I did disable all the useless items I can. I get about 9-10 hours with 1-1.5 hours SOT. Guess it's OK, but would have liked to get more of what others are reporting (3+ hours SOT).
Coming from the G3 on 23C, I did notice that my battery time did drop a bit, so it's not far off of what I had, not going to return the device, just going to deal with it for now.

Yea, I'm in the same boat. Not sure exactly what to do. I can return it and get an S6 which I hear is faster and has much better battery life. Or I can stick with it and hope a patch fixes or that it gets unlocked and we can run something else...
Oh and another thing, has anyone tried to recondition the battery?

Huge battery drain

After upgraded to Android 6.0, the battery drain apparently is much higher. Especially while I am sleeping at night, I found the battery might go down to 2-7% from 50%. I have no idea if it is caused by the new Android 6.0 or any new app I installed. Can someone advise me how to ascertain it and fix it. Thanks!

Perhaps you could try the app "Wakelock detector free" to see what applications are causing your trouble.
It's a common issue that's been present since lollipop...
It's probably Google Play services...
Go in Settings/privacy and search for google framework and play services and block them from starting on boot and autostarting.
Next thing you want to do is of course shut down WiFi/bluetooth/NFC or any other connection (just put it in airplane mode).
Another thing you want to do is downloading the Greenify app from the play store and hibernate EVERYTHING but the messaging apps (otherwise you won't receive any message.)

This issue is most of the time caused by fast dormancy.
Just disable it and u will be fine
Go to the hidden menu, type *#546368#*815# (replace 815 with ur model number, so 812 if u have the 812 model etc)
Then go to field test>Modem settings>PDP setting>0 and sellect fast dormancy off.
Reboot phone and you should be fine.
Report back, i'm kinda curious

Do this only after you have determined your network does not support fast dormancy. If it does and you disable it you will get more drain.
fast dormancy only applies to 3G. if you're on other G's and not connected to data it won't be doing anything.

Depends on what your sim settings are. Do you select 2/3/4g ?
In that case if the network signal is weak it will switch to 3g. Now if your 3G network does not support fast dormancy, then disabling it in the hidden menu will help. The problem with hidden menu settings is they dont stick after a reboot. So i suppose you need root to make them permanent.

Apps not updating

My apps on the play store don't seems to be updating even after I manually press update, it takes more than an hour to start. I have a stable internet connection (wifi) and loads of space. Any advice?
Clean google playstore app cache and data. And try to download apps
Sometimes it's an error from the playstore, just clear data and wait for couple hours and try again

Sync and app downloads happen at their own time and have tried from clearing playstore services cache to resetting the phone to factory settings.

I suspect Honor's rigorous battery saving mechanism has to do something with it, both True caller and Tapzo are quite invasive apps, they want to display more ads and need more access to info on phone. I hope they attend to this emailed their support.
Yeah I guess thats the reason, downloading apps after getting the update has become an issue though. I hope they fix it soon.

I think it's Huawei to blame, but what surprises me is that Huawei is clueless about this, and except for the standard troubleshoot they've got nothing.
Especially since smartphones are more capable than ever I feel like they could at least have some diagnostics to run and ID whats causing such simple issues.
May be if they really listen, they might release a patch soon. So far most of their cs are clueless and are technically incapable.
I guess Google is to be blamed because I encountered this error 497 on my previous device as well. By using VPN, this error goes away.

Getting about 6hours SOT. Also, after clearing both Play Store and Play Services cache/data, and rebooting, I now have a certified device and was able to re-add my debit card to Google Pay.
Playstore uncertified is fixed now! Google fixed it today!
Google Playstore uncertified issue with Beta3 is now fixed. Just clear data of Playservices and Playstore and reboot. You will then have Certified PlayStore!

Google Pay works fine for me.
App suggestions now show in the app drawer. Also weather now shows on the lock screen (didn't show for me in previous beta - just had a blank space)

Not the best battery life still (but that's more for my device being nearly 2 yrs old and being used heavily rather than any software issue).

com.google.android.gms wakelock

Com.google.android.gms is wakelocking like a banshee and its driving me crazy. I have location history on, but always leave location off unless using it. Og pixel xl stock P. Ideas?
Well by the icon it has something to do with Google play services no ?
Mine is much worse. Google play services draining my battery. And this happens only when I'm connected to mobile data..no issues on wifi. It used to happen on Oreo and still happens on pie. I tried safe mode too. So definitely no other apps are causing it. I tried other ways like disabling location history, location, turned off double tap to wake and all other gestures, turned off adaptive brightness, turned off web and app activity in Google account settings, turned off auto sync, denied Google play services permission to modify system settings, etc. No I don't know what else is left to try. This is so annoying....
Mine all have "sms" something or other in the alarm title. I have location turned off, why is it trying to ping location? Any idea?!

I feel it's related to Google account because this is happening in safe mode too so it's definitely not a 3rd party app causing this drain. It would be great if someone could help us find a way to figure out the cause.
There's a Magisk module for adding Google play services to the list of apps that are put to sleep when not in use. I would try that.

Not for a system service like that running wild. You can use Greenify for non system applications (if not rooted), but you'd have to root in order to take care of this issue. You could always try doing the laundry list: wiping app data/cache, force stopping it, or even starting fresh and wiping the phone. However that would take longer than it would to root the device.

With Magisk it will, it is a very easy app to navigate , and rooting w/ Magisk only takes a few steps. Boot into TWRP via fastboot ( there are TWRP.img files , that's what you'd want here ) flash Magisk, reboot to system.
Looks like it's not just me...my friend who is using a pixel 2 xl is also having play services battery drain.
Any fix for this?
