Android 8.1 slow fingerprint reader - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Anyone else notice or experience a slower fingerprint unlock after applying the 8.1 OTA update? A VERY noticeable difference in unlocking speed after the update.

No issue here mate, still as fast as it was before on 8.0.0. Might wanna try another reboot to see if it fixes your issue. You could then always try a factory reset as well.

I just downloaded and reinstalled the 8.1 factory image. Went through and setup phone from today's backup and added fingerprints. While the phone was finishing downloading apps from backup, the fingerprint unlock was fast and normal as usual. After apps updated and restore finished, I restarted the phone. Immediately, the slow fingerprint unlock returned. I have very few apps and this wasn't an issue until after I applied the 8.1 OTA side load before the initial posting of this thread. Additional testing of the speed by pressing the power button then unlocking with fingerprint reader yields inconsistent unlock speeds. At this point, I do not want to say that maybe it's because of a particular app that is installed on the phone, but rather it's possibly a problem with 8.1.
Any thoughts?

To put it into perspective, the fingerprint unlock under normal speed feels almost "too sensitive" because it's so fast. Now it registers my fingerprint touch right away but is followed by a slight pause/stutter before unlocking the screen.

I have this exactly

I too am facing similar problems. My phone on 8.1 takes about 1.5s to unlock while it only took <1s on 8.0. A workaround I took was to have always on display activated. And I ain't a fan of the always on display.

Yup. First thing I noticed was this delay between when the fingerprint is actually recognized (vibrate), until I actually get visual on the screen. Around a second or more

I actually had this issue on 8.1 DP2. But since doing a fresh install of the 8.1 official release, my finger print reader is just as fast as 8.0. Maybe try a new fresh install.

I too, am not a fan of the "Always On" display but can confirm that this does fix the problem. Thanks for sharing your finding.

Sadly, I actually went through a fresh 8.1 install but fingerprint scanner is still slow with ambient display off. Off to reinstalling my apps...

I found hit super hit or miss. When I flashed my rma phone to dp2 it was slow to unlock. When I flashed 8.1 final it was fast again. I had to flash 8.1 final again but this time the phone was slow to unlock. I got my new device flashed 8.1 on and it is thankfully unlocking quickly. I wish you all luck

I submitted it to Google under DP2 and it has been deferred to a future build... maybe re-submit under the final 8.1 as well??

Today I also noticed a random "static pop" noise coming from the phone while Chrome browser was open. It was quite distinct and loud and happened twice.

Same problem, gets fixed with always on display but if the screen is not on in between the seconds of pressing the power button and ambient display kicks in then the problem is still there. Also tried deleting the fingerprints and redoing the fingerprint initiation, but it did not help. The sensor registers the fingerprint by vibrating but screen gets on only after a second or more. sometimes though it is instantaneous. another problem for Google to fix I guess in next month update.

Same issue here since updated to 8.1
The fingerprint is recognized quickly (you fell the short vibration) but the screen turns on with a delay of about a second.
I have the same issue when I just press the Powerbutton - it also takes about a second until screen turns on.
Guys, I'm so disappointed with my Pixel 2 XL. Never had so many issues with a stock firmware phone.

Been running 8.1 through the beta for awhile now and haven't had any of these issues. Not sure if I'm just lucky or what but it's been humming along just fine. Just installed the 8.1 official over the 8.1 beta and haven't noticed anything as of yet. Will pay attention to see if I notice anything being slower.

I am also seeing the issue after updating to 8.1. It takes about 2 seconds for the screen to appear. AOD does make it faster but I can deal with it and hopefully google fixes it soon

I searched he'd the issue on google- obviously because I HAVE IT TOO. This is infuriating. This is major functionality. after 8.1 the finger print reader is slow AF. It feel like my old galaxy s4 that i just came away from when i would swipe to unlock it. How many times do we unlock these things a day? We just went from the fastest unlocking phone to the slowest. Why is this effed up? I'm pissed.
We have ppl whining about the freaking hamburger emoji having the cheese on the bottom and the wrong foam in the beer mug, meanwhile it takes forever to get into the phone to do anything much less get to the Emojis. How does BASIC functionality go BACKWARDS with an update?
What's even more infuriating is I can't go back to 8.0!!! Google doesn't allow it do they? I am coming to this phone off a Galaxy s4. One of the big benefits of the pixel family is the "fast updates."I saw someone argue that this isn't necessarily a plus sometimes these new Android versions slow a phone down, and it's done. Sometimes, like in this case, bugs are introduced. The very first update I took on this phone largely argues his point.
Another thing I'm noticing is the battery life seems to be dropping much faster. I'm wondering if it's the flash kernel 2.0 I installed though.
I will be filing a complaint on the link someone so kindly posted above (thank you), and I will be going into the chat option through the help menu on my phone to file a complaint there.
EDIT: it also seems like Google assistant isn't working now either. "Ok Google" brings her up. The mic registers my talking, but no results are displayed.
EDIT 2: I also forgot to mention that along with the slow unlock the swipe function on the finger print reader has been altered. Smiling up and down to toggle the notification drawer is very inconsistent and buggy. I have the finger print quick action app installed. I had a single tap set up to lock the screen. I had my finger print reader un/locking the phone and toggling the notification drawer. While the notification drawer has always been a little buggy, it was VERY functional and very acceptable. Something has changed on the reader so it is having a harder time differentiating between the different movements. Now it usually registers a swipe as a tap and the screen locks. I expected this to happen when I first downloaded the app on 8.0, but I was pleasantly surprised when everything worked through the sensor. Now I am very disappointed. The issue is NOT constant. It comes and goes. Idk why it does that. I'll be seeing if I can figure out why. I will NOT be activating the always on screen as a means to circumvent this issue. I don't want burn in. I've been concerned with that issue associated with always on before the pixel showed up.

Face Unlock Lag

Is anyone here experiencing this bug:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=23197
The lag happens BEFORE the face recognition takes place. It's clear the lag does not come from the face recognition. Instead it's probably coming from the time it takes for the camera to launch/activate. Now, the lag is not serious, but it did tend to get worse. However, I am very very sure that when I receive the Galaxy Nexus the first day, the lag wasn't there. The camera was ready to recognize my face almost instantly. I have 4 Galaxy Nexus in my family, and I had to set up the phone 4 times, so I am pretty sure that Face Unlock starts up really quick the first day.
Honestly I think it's just Android itself. The longer you own an Android phone and the more you use it, the laggier it gets :/ .

Well, this is applicable to almost every OS. It happened to my Mac, my Windows 7 PC, and a quick search in Google reveals many iPhone users complaining about the same thing (of course, they won't admit it publicly -- but they can't hide it in a Mac oriented forums ;-))
But it doesn't feel right in this case because the lag actually seems coming from the fact that the camera or the Face Unlock app wasn't in the memory ready to be used. If this is in fact the case, there are things Google can do to improve the experience.
On a side note, if I recalled correctly, I used to see Face Unlock in my running app list, but I no longer see it now. I wonder if this has anything to do with this bug.
Yes! I've been noticing this. And it is definitely only since I got the 4.0.2 update a couple of days ago. Before that it was near instant, now it lags
Although I have to admit, it recognised my face so poorly with 4.0.1 that I had to turn it off. Now with improved face matching I can use it all the time, I just hope they fix the lag.
Maybe someone running a custom rom on 4.0.3 can confirm whether they have the lag too.

Face Unlock rarely has problem recognizing my face. When Face Unlock fails to work, it's almost always due to the lighting -- I could barely see my face from the camera's preview myself at those time, how could I expect the phone to recognize me? Generally speaking, if my face is right around where the dotted face outline is, and there's is enough light for me to see my face in the camera preview, Face Unlock always work for me.
I was also suspecting the 4.0.1 update was the cause of problem. I just didn't have the time to confirm it.
I get this too. I wonder if its that it has more pictures to use to analyze in 4.0.2 vs 4.0.1. It annoys me that it takes just a little too long.
---------- Post added at 11:34 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:18 PM ----------
Does anyone with a 4.03 rom have lag on face unlock?
I bet it happens over time because we start to load apps and android naturally bumps the camera out of memory and so each time we go to screen unlock it has to load it up and start the camera which takes a bit of time.

I don't think it has to do with more pictures to analyze. I've tried clearing all the data and start from scratch, but it did not fix the problem. Also, the actual facial recognition work really quick -- if having more picture is affecting it, it will be because there're more data needed to be read to initialize the app. However, I see no reason why the app needs to load all the data before it even starts to recognize the face.
New Gnex owner here (of a grand total of 3 days). Rooted my phone my first day, flashed milestone 4, and all is good--except the face unlock screen seems to take 1-3 seconds to boot up the camera.
I don't recall it being an issue on day 1, but it is definitely now noticeable. I love the feature and would be immensely satisfied if the delay could be minimized...does anyone NOT have the lag?

Yup, same here. This feature is really useful for a phone as big as the GNex -- it's not that easy to swipe unlock with just one hand. I am using 4.04 and the bug still hasn't been fixed. I have tried all kind of tweaks, and none of them work.
I suggest you to comment on the official issue tracker and "star" it. The more people complain about it, the higher the chance it gets fixed soon.
I've only started using Face Unlock for a few days on 4.0.2 and only then to impress girls. I haven't experienced any lag so far. Face Unlock takes some time to set up for me though, and I have to tilt the phone in a unnatural angle to allow the camera to see my whole face.
Same issue here, after yesterday's update to 4.0.4 the camera literally never starts. Just a blank screen with clock and no back software button. I have to press emergency dial then back to get to the pattern lock. Happens 1 in 5 times I try to unlock.
I updated my Galaxy Nexus with Jelly Bean and Google seems to put a "fix" to this bug. Before you celebrate, here's the bad news -- no, I don't think they actually "fix" the underlying problem. In Jelly Bean, when you wake your phone up to use Face Unlock, instead of seeing a black screen, there will be an "animation" that gradually transits from a black screen to the camera. Amazingly, that simple trick seems to make the lag much less annoying, to the point that I don't feel there's a lag at all.

Ok I think I've done it but need further testing ...
Only possible on rooted devices ..
Go to folder
/data/data/com.android.faceunlock/shared_prefs/
in your root enabled file browser (I used es file explorer)
Open the file inside
Edit delay number to 1
Save file
Then change permissions to read only by all
And ownership to root
Go 1 level up and do the same with the shared_prefs folder (perm and owner)
And again 1 up and same settings to the com.android.faceunlock
Come back here and report if it improved
Not sure if all the permissions must be like that but I went safe on it since file got replaced first few times I tried
Please do.come back here to report if it worked for you too
My delay was 1730 after changing to 1 it worked like charm once but then it changed to ~700(file got updated again) then I've changed the settings of files and folders to present override and now I did not experience the lag yet
Let me know if you need more info or more detailed instructions 0,O
Also I feel I should mention ive done it on moto g 1st gen running 4.4.4
And that minimum time for it to open is same as time it takes to swap from back to front camera in your stock camera app plus time it takes to detect light conditions and in dark places it takes longer to do that

Fingerprint sensor not working occasionally

I've been recently getting some instances where I would lock the phone and the fingerprint sensor won't respond to my finger.
This really started when I changed my lock to pattern swiping. Anyone have the same issue? I rebooted and changed it back to pin lock and it seems to be working all the time again, but I don't know what caused it in the first place.
Thoughts?
How many fingerprints do you have saved? I have 3. 2 of my left index finger and one of my right. 95% of the time I use my left. Set up several and see if that helps. Move your finger all over the sensor when setting it up so it gets a broad picture of your fingerprint

It's not that it doesn't recognize my fingerprints, but it doesn't recognize fingerprints in general. So when I put my finger on it, it doesn't do the double buzz, it's just non responsive.
this happened to me yesterday several times. And i received phone yesterday... . I have two prints. Left and right index fingers. It didnt fail, just was as my finger wasnt in the reader

experienced the same thing this morning. phone was plugged charging and finger print would not detect, had to manually hit the power button then it worked. i find there are a lot of issues when the phone is charging though, screen sometimes becomes very unresponsive while charging. i think there was a similar thread about that as well.
Just started having this today as well. Sometimes doesn't acknowledge fingertip at all; works if i press lock button to wake the screen. Kind of a bummer, otherwise very satisfied overall. Hope it's just something that can be ironed out with a software update.

Nothing out of the ordinary installed. Twitter, Instagram, Dropbox, etc. Nothing to interfere with lock screen. I do use pattern unlock.
EDIT: Will try PIN unlock instead of pattern for a while to see if it acts any differently.

Any luck? I did a system wipe after unlocking, and flashed new factory images but still happening.
No luck. Still happening either way. I'd say maybe 10% of the time, fingerprint unlock works correctly. The other 90% I have to wake the screen with the lock button first. Sometimes after trying fingerprint multiple times, when I press the lock button and the screen wakes there is a little message at the bottom that says "Fingerprint hardware unavailable" in red where the little fingerprint icon usually is. But then it immediately changes to the fingerprint icon and it works fine.

I was able to find a bit more about this issue. When it happened again, I pressed the power button and quickly checked the fingerprint icon at the bottom of the lockscreen and it turned red and said "fingerprint hardware not available" for a split second before turning white again. I searched that error message and got this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/nexus5x/comments/3pm3lv/fingerprint_hardware_not_available/
I'll try wiping the cache and see if that helps at all. If not, I'm going to RMA.

I'm not much of a tinkerer, but I'll give this a shot. If it clears it up then okay, but if it happens again I'll probably RMA too. Not willing to put up with such inconsistencies on a brand new phone with such a highly touted feature.
Unrelated, this is actually already my second Nexus 5X. The first one I received would not take a charge, and I didn't have another USB Type-C cable to test, so they sent me an entirely new package. If wiping cache doesn't do it, I'm really not sure if I should bother with a third Nexus 5X. Kind of disheartening. I really enjoy the device otherwise.

I chatted with a Google support rep today, describing the issue and sending links to other message boards that are discussing this topic. He had me restart the phone in safe mode and sent a follow-up email, asking me to check back in after a few hours or a day or whenever, and let him know if the issue happens again. This was about seven or eight hours ago, and I haven't had the fingerprint sensor fail once when pulling the phone out of my pocket. It seems possible that a third-party app is interfering with the sensor's ability to function when the device is locked and the screen is off. I haven't installed very many apps, and they're all mainstream ones that everybody uses. My next step may be to factory reset the phone and stick to stock install for a day or two, then maybe add apps like Twitter, Instagram, etc., back one at a time per day and see if the issue returns. If it is a software issue, I don't think an RMA is necessary.
EDIT: Well it just did it, never mind all that

I've spent the past week emailing back and forth with Google tech support, sending in bug reports, even sending a video of the problem happening (and showing the fingerprint sensor working immediately after pressing the lock button). They've determined that the fingerprint sensor hardware itself is fine, and the problem is that instead of waking the screen it's telling the phone to go into Doze. I'm still sending them bug reports, and they're trying to replicate the problem on their own Nexus 5X to determine what (possibly an app?) is causing the problem. I'll report back in with any more information, in case anyone else has the problem and ends up here.
It happened to me too, stock phone, no third apps installed. I will keep an eye on this.
off-topic: the discoloration of the back of the phone it's very bad!

I believe it's not the hardware as well. I've noticed that it's mainly when I get notifications from something that the sensor stops working.

Did a factory reset, and the problem came back almost immediately. Google tech support wanted me to reinstall OS entirely, but I don't have the right cable (type C to type A) to hook up to computer, so they just gave RMA. Got the new one on Friday, so far so good. But then, with the last phone, the issue didn't appear until after a week or two. Fingers pressed. Tech support really seemed to take my case as a rarity, and they were unable to recreate it with their own device. Here's hoping it's just limited to a few devices.
P.S. Off topic, but Google support wouldn't give me anything for the Black Friday deal. I asked multiple times in multiple ways. Oh well.

Fingerprint scanner stopped working, can't be found

Suddenly the fingerprint scanner became less responsive the past few days. Then today it's just stopped working. Restarted, cleared fingerprints, restarted and system could not find scanner and bring it to support. Another restart and I was able to add fingerprints, but it still does not unlock the phone.
Any thoughts?
I'm done with LG too. V10 dead. G7 thinq dying. DONE!
Hey guys, I'm actually a Pro! I repair phones all day everyday and the G7 is my daily, my fingerprint scanner actually quit working and I replaced it, and it works totally fine now. I believe it is a manufacturing defect, but LG is a **** company and they don't own up to stuff like this. I love my G7, but I wish they handled things better. If you can send it in on warranty, otherwise replace the fingerprint scanner. Any local shop should be able to to do it 60-80, Mobile Defenders has OEM ones. Different colors work Fina as well. I have a pink ok on my blue boy. It's dope. Only real issue I've had, that and my battery is starting to get mediocre
I'm in the same boat. A reboot does the trick, but it's sooo annoying. Wish LG would own up and fix it.
Only it's not an issue because of the millions of g7s that have no problems.....

No issue with fingerprint scanner....
Excuse my bad english....
It happens to me sometimes but is due to some apps installed out of google play. In my case the solution is just to uninstall the app or the apps and then reboot the phone. It works for me in 100% of cases.
Some other cases i can just install them again and the fingerprint scanner is working with that app.

Always the cracked ones. Not all the cracked apps but NOT the apps from google play.
I meand that is like if the apps i donwload from that web sometimes block the fingerprint.
And most of the times is just inmediately.
I dont usually install those cracked apps but i download a few photo and video editing tools.
Mine "fixed" itself after about a week. It may have been an app or an update. But it works fine again.

So, after lot of investigation, the problem is with the fingerprint's "activity". It just stops working which will cause it to not show up in the menu and more headaches around other apps relying on it.
The possible solution to this is:
Download activity launcher or any app that can extract the activities running in your phone.
find: 'FingerprintASM' and 'FingerprintAuthenticator' under 'all activities' from the drop-down menu on the top
Tap on each to run it.

Tried it a few times, but fingerprint only works about 75% of the time event after trying this. In fact it's getting worse. Maybe it's hardware...

I have very similar problem. Fingerprint works in random situation but many times it does not work. Looks like fingerprint ceases to be active.. maybe its firmware problem. LG probably do not care about it.. but I see many LG users haves this problem.
I had an issue with mine when I first got it. The back plate had been removed and glued back on. It was slightly open on the top, which made the fingerprint sensor move away from the connection on the back of the phone. The sensor was mostly unresponsive until I sealed it back up. Not sure if this pertains to your problems, but I figured I'd share.

Question for the repair guy! My G7 Thinq fingerprint scanner stopped working. I tried to add my fingerprints again with no luck. The phone "buzzes" when I touch the sensor and the screen displays "Place your finger on the center of the fingerprint sensor." Sometimes I get "Sensor needs to be cleaned"
Stepped through some other suggestions and did a "hard reset/wipe of the phone", no joy. Will replacing the fingerprint sensor would effect a repair? I would hate to go to the repair shop, pay for the replacement, and it still not work.
Thanks in advance
One possible quick fix
I noticed in a tear-down video that the fingerprint sensor uses touch contacts for signal transmission (as opposed to being a plug-in contact). I pressed on the area about where it is located, just under the flash and IR, and now it works! If you've dropped your phone a few times it might cause this as the back is glued on and the contact area could pull away from the glue (just a theory). I think I will try to heat it up and press down on it some more for good measure.
Update:
This approach does get it working again but the effect is not long-lived. Tried it with heating but again it is not permanent. Alas.

Restart the device.

I don't have these activities in the Android 10 ROM. When I activate some others it throws an error that seems to indicate the hardware is missing.
It's newly ordered and it seems connected ok, same position as original, checked without cover too, just doesn't work. Perhaps incompatible hardware or faulty?
activity launcher did not work on my LG Q stylus plus !!!

It seems to appy to Android 9. 10 has some other processes.
Easiest is to look for Smart cleaning, then choose fingerprint.
It will show that the hardware is not being detected.
I tried everything to no avail.
I either got two broken sensors or another issue.
Seems the lower board might be suspect.
If anyone figures it out, please psot, so will I.
Thanks

Question Keyboard delay

Have any of you experienced a lag in the keyboard popping up in some situations. I'm using gboard on the latest update and it's so annoying I have to wait for the keyboard to come up
Seems like there's so many issues with this phone out of the gate!

It really does. I'm coming from the op7 pro and I'm starting to regret this move

I have to admit i've not come across any problems personally, although I am waiting on my Google Fi SIM (which should be arriving today) so that may change things.
My op9 pro arriving today
I too have the delay with the keyboard
are you all using the standard keyboard as I use SwiftKey and don't appear to get any issues

Give examples? I'd like to see what the issues are? Is it software related? They seem to always fix those are time goes.

Same. I'm holding off on trading in my 7 Pro until the 15-day return period ends.

No major issues for me thankfully. Only minor ones I've experienced is that the "1" and "0" keys on the keyboard have a small delay before they appear. I'm guessing edge detection is a little aggressive to make sure I wanted to tap those keys?
And taking video sometimes has this weird wobble effect in the video with occasional brightness flickering on walls for instance.
Other than this, everything is great. It will be fixed in software updates. I still haven't downloaded the latest one which said it improved video so maybe this is already solved.
I have not had any problems. Not sure if matters but I always set the phone from scratch, no copy apps or backups. The most I do is export settings and import setting for some apps.
For me, it has proven to avoid a lot of "weird" things...
Not sure if this is the same issue OP is having but I've noticed since day 1 that there is a noticeable delay when pressing or long pressing the keys on the edge of the keyboard. For example, there's about a split second to full second delay when pressing the backspace key. So that means, I have to wait for that delay and then wait again for the original delay if I want to delete whole words at once. It is super frustrating.
I did some testing to see if maybe it's because I'm using gestures and the delay may be caused by the phone detecting the edge touch and waiting for a swipe inward to go back, but that's not the case as it happens with the button navigations too.
Looks like my issue is known and has been around for a while, even though it was not present in my OP7 Pro as of last week when I switch to the 9 Pro.

I've been using SwiftKey and haven't had any issues at all. It's the opposite actually, typing feels very fast and smooth, keyboard always appears instantly and the haptics when typing are very satisfying. Hope it gets fixed for you guys.

Glad to know it doesn't seem to be a universal thing, thanks for letting us know. I'm hesitant to restore to factory settings due to the time it'll take to get everything set up again, but I may have to bite the bullet soon.

I've never once encountered the problem you're referring to.
I Use gboard beta (this is better anyway because it has all the cutting edge sh1t), and turn off all system animations.
Problem fixed. You're welcome.

Sadly I can't update just yet as the install fails, likely due to me flashing the EU boot image on my global variant. When I update I hope my issue is fixed. I also just realized that my issue is a tad bit different than OP's. I decided to make a short video for you all to see, link at the bottom.
I started typing in the center of the keyboard so you can see how quick and responsive it is. Then I go to the edges and you'll see there's like a full second delay until the phone picks up the touch for the key. For the scrolling, I tested along the entire edge and it was the same which leads me to believe my issue is not a keyboard typing issue, but a full screen edge touch delay detection issue. You'll see that when I start the scrolling in the center of the screen, it's quick and smooth. When starting the scroll from the edge of the screen, it initially jumps before scrolling smoothly.
I swear it almost feels like the phone detects the touch on the edge but does not register it right away and instead waits a second to see if I will then slide in from the edge to go back since I'm using gestures. But I tried using the button navigation instead of gesture and the delay is still there so idk at this point. I can confirm that this issue never happened on the OP7 Pro that I'm coming from.

Same here. The 1 and 0 keys have a delay. I assume this has to do with edge touch rejection and it's be nice to have some settings to change this behavior, like Samsung has done (if that is the issue). Could be gestures as well with the OS wondering if you'll do a gesture, but it should not be this much of a delay. It is annoying for sure.

I'm pretty sure it's due to the gestures. I just tested it on my regular 9, same problem, it takes a fraction of a second to realize I'm scrolling and not trying to do a gesture if I'm at the edge of the screen. Does it happen with button navigation?

Question Issues with Smart Lock?

Hi,
I find the Smart Lock (using Trusted Places) to be very buggy..
Sometimes I find that the Smart Lock just stops working when I'm at my desk.. Whatever, so I try and re-enable it, but I'm never able to easily re-enable it. I follow the same process, but the lock screen doesn't have the unlocked padlock. Rebooting the device made it work, and I also got it to "work" by toggling "On-body detection", and then going back to "Trusted places" (or some odd combination of adding a 2nd Trusted Place). It's a bit frustrating..
It's also not clear to me how to enable the "Trusted places" option. For example, the "On-body detection" option has a toggle to enable it. The "Trusted places" screen has no button/toggle. I tap on the big tile/graphic of the "house with the 4 dots linking to the phone", and I believe that's how you kickstart it?
Lastly, in the Trusted Places screen, it has a note at the bottom saying:
"Your device will stay unlocked for up to four hours..."

So according to that, it expires at 4 hours? However when I wake up I notice that it's still active..
I have a similar issue were at random the smart lock will just not work and I have to log back into the phone, even finger print option not available. Basically same as if I was to restart the phone. The feature is still enabled so don't need to re enable! I was hoping that getting onto a pixel this garbage will stop happening after experiencing it on my old op6t but as of now the pixel works worse then op.

Ah interesting, so you are experiencing similar issues too..
I wonder if it has something to do with the phone temporarily losing it's current location, and thus forcing a lock on the phone? Not sure..

You would think but I have my watch connected to it as well both wearos or fitbit sense and same issue with smart lock, so not just location limited.
Noticed the same problem here. My old device I just used the rear finger print scanner, it was instant on and in, with the Pixel 6 Pro the finger print reader is neither in the best place or the quickest, and if you are in a dark place and don't aim properly, its a blinding light! So I thought at least at home I can use smark unlock. Worked fine yesterday, today it wouldn't stay unlocked. All settings appeared okay, my address was shown as a trusted place, I loaded maps so it get my location (it was already showing me at home anyway), but just not working.
I then removed my trusted place, readded, exactly the same address from the pinpoint on the map was shown, and it is working again.
I took the 4 hours to mean that after 4 hours you would need to sign in again once, then you get another 4 hours of smart unlock.
Just a buggy piece of Google software I guess.
Honestly I don't think I've ever had Smart Lock that really worked on ANY of my android phone. It works when it wants to.
Smart Lock has been janky since original pixel and the nexii before that.
