Note 4 rooting for hotspot N910p - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a friend with a Note 4 and he wants me to root his phone so he can enable tethering? I wasn't aware that simply rooting a phone would somehow enable tethering.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding him and he intends to install some app that requires root that will enable tethering.
If he does this and his carrier does not allow tethering won't he be banned/blocked?
Is there a way to keep the carrier from finding out?
Is there a particular ROM that would be good for this?
Or maybe someone knows what this guy is intending to do? Maybe someone is aware of a tethering app that requires root that I'm unaware of?
Also, I think that he would maybe be happier with his phone without all the bloatware, can someone recommend a nice stable and fast ROM with wicked themes and lots of options?
Much appreciated!

You can root, install Galaxy tools and enable it there.

I ended up just giving it a root and flashing Lineage and related addons and tethering was enabled when we booted it up.

Best root for Wireless Tether ONLY? e.g. no custom ROMs

So I've been researching some different root methods, but I haven't really been able to find a specific thread based on what I'm looking for.
I'm looking for Wireless Tether usage a couple of times a month (e.g. when I'm traveling or something like that). This is ALL I want root for. I don't want a custom ROM or anything else.
What is the best root method if all I want is Wireless Tether to work? I don't even care if I have to "re-enable" it from the phone after a boot (e.g. a soft root). I'm trying to stay as close to stock as I can.
Please don't post about loading up a new ROM, I don't want that. I just want a clean, easy root to get wireless tether.
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and assistance!
If Unrevoked 3.21 works for you, that would be the simplest option. It's not the least intrusive, but it doesn't require you to re-run it each time you start up your phone.
It doesn't require you to flash a custom ROM.

Thanks Noxious,
Could you elaborate on the method that is the least intrusive, even if I have to re-run it everytime I startup my phone? I'm assuming I have to re-run it from the phone and not the computer? I'm ok with that - and would actually prefer it if it's the least intrusive.
Also, how much will Unrevoked 3 change my device? Does it automatically load up a new recovery and all that?
I would also like to root for the same thing. How stable is wireless tether. I want to root just to use the wireless tether feature. I have read other forum posts stating it cuts in and out.
Basically I dont want to root if the wireless tether feature is kinda ify.
Can't you simply root and leave the stock ROM with Sense and all, and install Wireless Tether, SetCPU, and whatever else you'd want? Or do you need to have a ROM that someone's already made with all those things added to it?
Personally I'm holding off on Rooting until this 2.3/3.0 update.
actually in my opinion the unrevoked3 method is th easiest. the hardest part about that method is the driver installation. you do need to make sure you have all drivers installed and htc sync installed and then removed before you begin. If not it will hang during the rot process. unrevoked method of rooting actually changes nothing visually except for adding the superuser app(this is an easy indicator of being rooted). and the free wireless tether app from google is pretty much hands down the best. it is the one that most people include in their custom roms here is the apk for the wireless tether.

Thanks caguirr4. Does Unrevoked actually install a new custom recovery?

yes it does. it will install the clockworkmod recovery. not sure if it is the latest one but it is no big deal. do make sure that you make a backup as soon as you root. have fun buddy.

Are there any root options that don't? I'm just trying to stay as close to stock as possible with just the SU permissions to enable wireless tether. Thanks again.

None that i am aware of. But you need the recovery to make a backup. You can search the forum some more but I am pretty sure every root method requires some sort of recovery method.

[Q] Removed Tethering Provision....oops?

Hello.
First of all, I am new here. I have done a fair amount of reading over the last few days, and I love the site. I finally ditched the "slackberry" in favor of an att GNII. With the help of an xda post, I managed to root it and install TB. Silly me decided to remove to Tethering Provision file reading (incorrectly) that doing so would allow me to enable wi-fi hotspot....
well... it doesnt. So now tethering is pretty much broke all together. Any advice?
Do you know what the file name was and its location

Unfortunately, all I know for sure is that Titanium Backup called it ThetherProvision. I was under the impression i had to remove it to enable wifi hotspot on my rooted phone
I was able to install foxfi and now I can tether. It would be nice if I could use the stock tether option. I guess ill wait to see if someone figures that out. Should i be concerned that I blew away this ThetherProvision?
Just a quick note. I do not pay for a tethering option on my subscription. I assume that was understood. But, like i said, I am new here.
Well maybe some one could post a copy of theres, I would but it seems that telus doesnt have that file on my phone, on another note everytime you are going to delete something, back it up first
When it comes to android modding the best thing you can do is back everything up
Here ya go...
Here it is in ODEX form wich is stock.
Its CWM / TWRP flashable.
Also here is a link to a stock at&t rom, which you can flash if you make anymore "mistakes"

Yeah, I made that too :highfive:
If you removed that tethering provision apk and tethering works I would leave it removed in case it's part of AT&T detection of you using tethering without their additional fee.
thanks for everyones help

I don't think you will use the stock teather if you are not on a plan anyway.
For me that would mean I lose my Unlimited data (aka trottle) and pay an additional $15/mo.

How do I use this? I too, have deleted the provision and my situation is the same, but I am lost as far as using this information to fix my problem. If possible, do you step by step directions?

Hotspot enabling

Okay, I know there are apps that let you hotspot without a plan but a while back, and I kick my self for this, I came across a zip file that bypassed the Verizon check when you turned on tethering but I never saved it. Since then I have flashed a few Roms and somehow I deleted the zip in my downloads folder and now I can't find the zip anywhere online. Again, I know there are apps and threads talking about this app and that app for tethering but what I am looking for is the zip to flash in recovery. It worked for both CDMA and GSM Gnexs. Somebody please help, need that zip again. Thanks for the time and feed back.

What rom are you running? I think pretty much all of them have the carrier check bypass built in.

There is no bypass, because AOSP doesn't have the limitation. The tethering limitation is imposed on software by carriers, not by Google. Makes sense?
Im running stock root. Kinda like it that way. Plain and simple
Thanks to DR3W5K1 over at rootzwiki. This is the zip I was looking for.

Simplest way to get tether?

Hi, was just checking out my options to root this phone and get tether. Is there anything simpler than what is in this thread:

Chat with Sprint and get your MSL. When asked, tell them your a ROM developer this is what I told them. With your MSL this is by far the easiest way with no root required.

Enabling tethering on N? Rooting N?

On my previous phone (Nexus 6P), I always had to root and edit the build.prop file in order to enable wifi tethering. When I switched to the Z Play, I was surprised and glad to see that I didnt need to do that, it just enabled and started working. However, since updating to N, it has started displaying the same error my 6P used to whenever I'd try enabling the tethering (basically to contact carrier to enable it).
My question is: is there a working root method for N on the Z Play yet? If not, is there a non-root method of editing the build.prop file, or other way of getting tethering enabled?
Thanks!

What about the tethering issue? Is it just impossible on Nougat? (without the carrier bit)
The 2 non-stock roms have tethering enabled so far I like lineage the most have had little quirks with team mex's nothing major in either at this point
Is there no way to enable tethering without rooting? I feel like I'm going to brick it and don't want to lose the warranty.
can we do the sim tether trick? where you pull sim card out...enable wifi tether when no sim logo is present...then reinstall sim?
That is prob your best attempt aside from trying 1 of the pay apps that work for some phones. Aside from rooting which you do not have to use a custom ROM magisk can enable

sounds like the pay apps only work with usb tether
This is very true I have not checked any of them lately but I believe android changes have limited them. I would think editing build prob would still work not sure which line it was I haven't done it since honeycomb days...
