Enabling tethering on N? Rooting N? - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

On my previous phone (Nexus 6P), I always had to root and edit the build.prop file in order to enable wifi tethering. When I switched to the Z Play, I was surprised and glad to see that I didnt need to do that, it just enabled and started working. However, since updating to N, it has started displaying the same error my 6P used to whenever I'd try enabling the tethering (basically to contact carrier to enable it).
My question is: is there a working root method for N on the Z Play yet? If not, is there a non-root method of editing the build.prop file, or other way of getting tethering enabled?
Thanks!

What about the tethering issue? Is it just impossible on Nougat? (without the carrier bit)

The 2 non-stock roms have tethering enabled so far I like lineage the most have had little quirks with team mex's nothing major in either at this point

Is there no way to enable tethering without rooting? I feel like I'm going to brick it and don't want to lose the warranty.

can we do the sim tether trick? where you pull sim card out...enable wifi tether when no sim logo is present...then reinstall sim?

That is prob your best attempt aside from trying 1 of the pay apps that work for some phones. Aside from rooting which you do not have to use a custom ROM magisk can enable

sounds like the pay apps only work with usb tether

This is very true I have not checked any of them lately but I believe android changes have limited them. I would think editing build prob would still work not sure which line it was I haven't done it since honeycomb days...

Newbie to the EVO, but Not Android. Needs Root

Hey guys. I'm not a noob. I use ADB and have flashed many a roms on my Nexus one and old G1 from the oldies days.
Basically I have a Completely Stock OTA'd Sprint EVO running the latest OTA. 2.2 and I just need to simply Root it. No rom's or anything. I need to root it, and get USB Tethering working so my friend doesn't have to pay the $30 through sprint for tether. I don't wanna have to wipe, or anything as he wants to just run stock how it is, with tethering.
Using something like Unrevoked3 i don't need to wipe or anything right. I can simply use Unrevoked, get root. install the Tethering stuff that requires root and I'm good to go right? I read all the RSA info and people loosing WimaX key's and it's got me a little worried.
Unrevoked will root and give you stock everything I am preety sure that it will not wipe I did mine a while and a few roms and I can't remember

First need to verify that your h boot is compatible with unrevoked 3. If it is then you should be good to go. people were having problems lising their rsa keys with 1 specific version of unrevoked 3. But that is in a problem anymore. After rooting with unrevoked then yes all you should all you have to do is download wireless tether app and then that's it.

get pdanet app if you just need usb tethering even though rooting is not that difficult, make your life easier...

Everything you need is right here. This is what I used to do it 19 days ago and I have all of Sprint's most recent OTA's.

FYI - PDANet is not free after a certain amount of days. It will stop you from getting to secured sites like facebook and gmail.
Your first intentions are the best just root with Unrevoked which is 5 minutes and download wireless tether.
Or something I have done for quite a few people like you download z4root and it can give you temporary root and then load up wireless tether and it works fine.
If you need any help just pm me and I will walk you through it.
Z4root + Wireless Tether = Just want you want and no hassle
edit: Here is a little more info
1 Download Z4root from here
2. Place apk on sdcard and install
3 Click temporary root and wait
4 Go to Market and download latest Wireless Tether for Root
5 After you have been given temporary root open up Wireless Tether and it will ask for SU permission say yes and thats it.
Now you can run root apps as long as you have that running. It will turn off after every reboot.
pdanet worked great.. and sprint wont see that and charge my friend?
also using z4 for temp root, then adding Wireless Tether to the SU list. that will only work while Temp rooted right? so he'd have to temp root everytime he wants to wireless tether? or will it work after the first initial time? I'd think it always needs root.
pdanet over 4G was pretty fast

It will work for as long as his phone is on.. Just remember that pdanet is a temp fix unless you pay for it..... temp root is simple after the first time just an app to click and thats it. You will also be able to run some other root apps as well
I've used temp root with z4 plenty. But he'd have to re temp root every time he wanted to wireless tether. that gets a little tedious.
so far pdanet working great.

no he only has to re temp root when he reboots his phone
If he does end up rooting it "semi-permanently", you might want to load him up with a ROM like Sprintlover's. Reason being, he might get random Force Close problems if he sticks with the stock rooted one. Sprintlovers is completely stable and looks totally stock for people like your buddy. Wireless tether should work awesome with it.
HTH.

ok but just remember if you do not pay for PDANET it will shut you down from secure websites and it also does not have wireless only bluetooth and wired

I am pretty sure you cannot load a ROM with the temp root. You need full nand access to load ROMS on the EVO. I would just use unrevoked3 and be done with it. I have used it on a ton of evos for my clients and have had no issues at all.

You will need to be rooted to use the Wireless Tether app from the market.
HTC Evo
Rooted, but still stock...for now

The program is designed to work, if it's not, we have a problem.
Is there a Wireless tether where I do not have to be rooted? I have tried rooting a million times and it never works for me
There is always like a million steps I have to do and a bunch of things I have to download in order for it to work and well its frrustrating...
I'm pretty sure all wireless tether apps, other that the Sprint one, require root. The closest you can get to tethering without root would be to use pdanet or easytether, but both of those are usb tether only.

Darn... well... I keep hearing from people that on here somewhere there is a one step root, where all I need to do is install and it will root it for me, but I could never find it. Can someone help me please. I hear things from I need to save some type of numbers from the phone itself, incase the root messes up or something ( not contact numbers).
I think once you have root and full nand unlocked you could backup your existing file etc. Unrevoked.com is what I think is the tool folks are using to root. You just have to be careful based on your hboot

[Q] Removed Tethering Provision....oops?

Hello.
First of all, I am new here. I have done a fair amount of reading over the last few days, and I love the site. I finally ditched the "slackberry" in favor of an att GNII. With the help of an xda post, I managed to root it and install TB. Silly me decided to remove to Tethering Provision file reading (incorrectly) that doing so would allow me to enable wi-fi hotspot....
well... it doesnt. So now tethering is pretty much broke all together. Any advice?

Unfortunately, all I know for sure is that Titanium Backup called it ThetherProvision. I was under the impression i had to remove it to enable wifi hotspot on my rooted phone
I was able to install foxfi and now I can tether. It would be nice if I could use the stock tether option. I guess ill wait to see if someone figures that out. Should i be concerned that I blew away this ThetherProvision?
Just a quick note. I do not pay for a tethering option on my subscription. I assume that was understood. But, like i said, I am new here.
Well maybe some one could post a copy of theres, I would but it seems that telus doesnt have that file on my phone, on another note everytime you are going to delete something, back it up first
When it comes to android modding the best thing you can do is back everything up
Here ya go...
Here it is in ODEX form wich is stock.
Its CWM / TWRP flashable.
Also here is a link to a stock at&t rom, which you can flash if you make anymore "mistakes"

Yeah, I made that too :highfive:
If you removed that tethering provision apk and tethering works I would leave it removed in case it's part of AT&T detection of you using tethering without their additional fee.
thanks for everyones help

I don't think you will use the stock teather if you are not on a plan anyway.
For me that would mean I lose my Unlimited data (aka trottle) and pay an additional $15/mo.

Note 4 rooting for hotspot N910p

I have a friend with a Note 4 and he wants me to root his phone so he can enable tethering? I wasn't aware that simply rooting a phone would somehow enable tethering.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding him and he intends to install some app that requires root that will enable tethering.
If he does this and his carrier does not allow tethering won't he be banned/blocked?
Is there a way to keep the carrier from finding out?
Is there a particular ROM that would be good for this?
Or maybe someone knows what this guy is intending to do? Maybe someone is aware of a tethering app that requires root that I'm unaware of?
Also, I think that he would maybe be happier with his phone without all the bloatware, can someone recommend a nice stable and fast ROM with wicked themes and lots of options?
Much appreciated!

Trying to keep root features without root. (Hotspot)

When going to Android 11 I'd like to keep my device unrooted.
The only things I want to keep is vanced (will install the version w/I magisk) and my Hotspot. I know there's some play store Hotspot apks but I can never get them to work.
Last update the build.prop edit no longer worked, but i found a zip that enabled it from XDA. Believe it needed to be flashed in magisk but not sure.
I intend to try and flash the 11 OTA and just remove -w, hoping I'll keep the Hotspot modification.
If it matters, my SO wanted me to get back into pokemon go and I can't play on a rooted device. Tried magisk hide but that didn't work.
Any advice would be appreciated, cheers.

You won't be able to keep any Magisk modifications without magisk. The way Magisk works is systemless so it needs to have the Magisk installed to mount the modules over the necessary directories. Also, for Pixels on Android Q and Android R you can't mount the system partitions to even modify them in the first place, so even if Magisk did directly modify the partitions they wouldn't work for devices with our logical partitions.
Pretty sure the way PoGo detects root is by searching for files/folders in your install storage called Magisk, twrp, or various other root names. So I'd suggest making sure those kinds of folders are cleaned out or renamed to something unrelated to root.
Also, Magisk doesn't support R yet so you won't be able to root yet even if you wanted to.

Ah. So maybe I should keep the -w in the OTA to make sure to clean out some folder/files.
Didnt know R wasn't supported yet, kinda figured it wouldn't be since it just came out, but thanks for saving the hassle of finding out the hard way.
I've read going through threads here and saw that some people had lost root but kept some modifications after updating. Hoped that would have worked or there'd be able way without root out there that I was unaware of.
Anyway, thanks for the response!

Well I just installed PoGo real quick after checking my internal storage and renaming any file/folder with Magisk in the name to remove Magisk, and with Magisk hidden with a random package name and app name and PoGo hidden in magisk hide I was able to successfully log in without it detecting anything. So if you do wish to have modifications once Magisk supports R just make sure to keep an eye on your files/folder names and you should be all good :good:
As for the threads you've been reading, that's definitely curious. Do you know if they were pixel users? Or just people using a GSI or something?

OTA will not wipe your phone. I updated this way last night from Q, not rooted.
Just realize that the Android 11 developer release is not designed to be run as a "daily driver". It's a first alpha release and it is going to be full of bugs and incompatibilities.
There is zero reason to install this on anything but a spare phone that you develop on.

Thanks for the progress report....
My comment was directed mainly at the OP. Somehow I don't think he is Google's target audience for the developer build and I am afraid he will be the type that complains or begs for help when things don't work right.
That being said, I am also surprised that the release is running so well......

No disrespect. Just commenting on my experience.
I am also surprised. Only weird thing was asking to register my sim. I'm guessing it was looking for an esim. Other than that, not a single force close or slow down. But to be honest it doesn't look like a big update as the version number suggest. Feels more like a little spit and polish. Like this should be Android Q 10.1.
I myself gave up rooting. The only two reasons I was rooting were adaway and viper.

As with most major android updates since Oreo. Most visible changes now are slight UI revisions and some new features.
However, there are a load of under the hood changes being made. Some for the better, some for the worse.

All the other various methods/tricks i used in the past that worked, like manually editing the LTE APN etc, just aren't working on this 3aXL.
