OnePlus 5T vs Razer Phone... Help me pick - OnePlus 5T Questions & Answers

First, I'd like to say it's been a LONG time since my last post lol...
I currently have an iPhone 6S Plus and it's showing it's age. If I were to go with an iPhone 8 Plus it would just be the same old phone I have. Not worth $800+ to me.
So I kinda accidentally bought an iPhone X... hated it.

Next the Note 8 caught my eye ever since I saw it on display in a store. It was a great phone. I didn't have any major issues with it. Except for the one simple fact of managing notifications (mostly texts) on the lock screen. It was more steps to complete the same task on the Note vs the iPhone. Once or twice is no big deal, but all day long it got annoying.
iPhone -
1) 3D press on text notification
2) Reply
Note 8 -
1) Pick up phone
2) Double tap on messages icon
3) Unlock with finger print on back (my preferred form of security)
4) Swipe down notifications
5) Find the notification
6) Press reply
7) Be brought into the messages app or reply in a tiny notification box
I tried a bunch of different messaging apps. None of them allowed you to simply reply from the lock screen without having to unlock your phone and fiddle with notifications every time. The solution is to have no security. Is that really a solution?

So I'd say I had my fair share of experience on both OSes.
I was very active on here with my Note 2. I really loved that phone, but again it got old and was time to move on.
My Note 3 had so many issues after only a few weeks with it I got rid of it and Apple has locked me into their ecosystem since...
However, I feel like Apple has lost it's touch. They're getting worse and worse. Consumers are becoming beta testers and the software is becoming so sloppy that I am literally afraid to update because of my phone slowing down, killing battery life, breaking something, etc...
Currently the Razer Phone and the OnePlus 5T have my attention. Hardware is pretty similar on both phones, although the Razer phone has that beautiful 120hz screen. Not sure it's worth the price difference though.
Performance is about the same on both phones since they have pretty much the same hardware. I think it comes down to personal preference as to fingerprint location, expandable storage, speaker quality, headphone jack, etc... One big complaint I see about the Razer Phone is brightness. If I'm outside and can't see the screen that's not going to be good.
More importantly to me is how the phones will be supported after purchase. My biggest fear is a company making a phone like this and then dumping support for it 6 months down the line for a new phone or giving you the run around for a warranty claim.
Can you sell me on either phone?

I was looking at both of these phones as well. Although for different reasons. I came from a Pixel XL.
The screen and battery life on the Razer were deal-breakers for me. Too dim (and LCD) and it made the 4000mah battery run like a 2800mah.
The other deciding factor was software. I knew the OnePlus would have years of excellent Dev support with the latest custom firmwares and all the tweaking I would ever want. The Razer, didn't have this guarantee.
I got the 5T and it is wonderful. The screen is gorgeous (Samsung) and it gets 8h SOT over 48 hours.

I was on the same boat and looked at the razer and the screen was just so dim, I read its like 300nits of brightness which is more than half of the note 8.
the battery takes a big hit with 120hz on.
I got my oneplus 5t coming today so can wait.

Am in the same boat. I have the note 8 and the thing has been fast. I am however attracted by the 8gb on the 5t and razer, and am also very much undecided. Am not bothered about the price difference, my main debate is which is more faster between the 2?

Yeah, brightness is something I'd have to see for myself to decide.
How is the 5T treating you so far?

Really, the battery? I've heard nothing but good reviews about the battery on the Razer. I actually prefer LCD over AMOLED. I'm just used to looking at LCD on my iPhone. The iPhone X OLED gave me migraines.
Software is definitely a big deal. I know OnePlus has a good record of updating. Razer is an unknown and at this point that's my biggest concern.
Someone on Reddit told me the 5T got a KRACK fix already. iOS is still unpatched lol

Both should be faster than the Note 8, which I thought was pretty damn fast. I turned animations to 0.5x which sped things up a bit.
Watching some speed test videos between the Razer and the 5T they both were neck and neck as far as speed goes. Some apps were faster on one phone, but only by milliseconds.

Only thing about razer is lack of dev support at the moment and that's where the oneplus will definitely excel. Even root is not yet available. I could do without dev support but root is a must for me.

Eh, neither is a deal breaker for me. I know root on the Razer definitely will void your warranty. Judging from my interaction with Razer support so far though, they likely won't care or check it. Seemed pretty clueless about simple questions, which is kinda steering me away from that phone.

Let's just say , first day using my 5T, and I am amazed.
I've used 50+ devices in the last 4 years.
This phone is arguably a better daily than the S8.
All of the deal breakers I had in mind about the phone are gone.
The speaker sounds fantastic for a single one,
Water resistance has left my mind ,however it would be nice.
The 3.5mm jack sounds beautiful.
And the screen is wonderful.
I can't believe it's only $499!!!
I've had the G6 and S8. This phone is right there with them.
A big what if,
The camera isn't as good as those flagships. It's not bad. It's serviceable. Hopefully better with updates ?

apparently even though the oneplus 5t does not have water proof certification but tests proof it has indeed some type of water proofing.
there is a YouTube video on it.

Can you explain why?

The Razer phone will be basically unusable in direct sunlight.
The Razer phone will have little to no dev support.
Will the Razer phone continue to get updates for 2+ years? Who knows...
The Razer phone costs $200 more.
The Razer phone will almost certainly have no third party accessories beyond a few ****ty cases from AliExpress.
OnePlus 5t has none of these problems.

I too am deciding whether I should take the 5t or the 3t. I am a student and have around 400 £. My main issue with the 5t right now is that it seems a bit to large for me. I have the s7 and would like to know if the 5t is really a big phone.
Also, do you think the camera will be better than my s7?

I can assure you that you definitely won't be disappointed with your decision.
My last phone was a Pixel and in my opinion this 5T is a much more premium device, faster, way more features, better sound through speaker and Bluetooth, much better and brighter screen, very good automatic brightness, better battery life, better everything basically. I don't have a bad word to say about it yet and I am extremely picky.
Also i have the oneplus glass screen protector and the karbon case and the feel in the hand is just superb, everyone I've shown the phone to has been impressed with the appearance and feel of it, it's not very protective but very sleek and keeps the phone thin and light.

Good website to compare sizes, make sure you calibrate it with your current phone or a credit card.
I'm not a fan of large phones either, i hate holding my girlfriend's iPhone 6s plus, I was wondering if I would like the size of the 5T coming from the smaller Pixel but I'm not disappointed at all, it's a very thin phone and I use it one handed most of the time with no issues.
Pulling down status bar can be a bit of a stretch but there is an option to use the fingerprint reader to pull it down.

I realized, although it is first to the table with 120hz screen etc etc.
The phone is sort of like an experiment. The front speakers are a nice touch. I am not a headphone jack whore, but it is indeed a nice touch for the 5T ( quality is excellent btw)
Do not be afraid of camera quality. It's quite good. If using the GCam apk.
Also just the overall software of the 5T, you literally have almost every custom option you could ask for.
The Razer, superbly smooth screen with low brightness.
Dope speakers. Questionable camera. Great build.
We will not know about the updates with Razers new device.
With the 5T, Oreo will be here soon.

Razer is promising alot... Will they deliver? Who knows.
One thing is for sure. For their first phone they certainly hit a home run.

Considering a oneplus one instead...

Well this is a real first world problem. I love my G3 so far but seems like development is really slow. I'm contemplating trading it for a oneplus one. I like all the variety and software options it has. The possibilities seem to be endless just like the n5. And the oneplus looks like a nice choice as far as hardware goes too. Not sure what to do here.

I was thinking the same thing, but i doubt the LGs flagship is going to go unnoticed. Im sure the devs are hard at work with new roms, etc.
Plus, do you really want to have to beg for an invite, in order to buy the OPO?

Yeah, the invite system really pissed me off! I got an invite out of the blue on day. I didn't realize you had 24-hours to buy the phone when claiming the invite.
Anyway, I click the claim button in the email and the 24-hour buy ticker goes off. I didn't have the money at the time. I'd been waiting for that phone for ages.
Needless to say, here I am with the G3.

I have two of the OnePlus's I'm getting rid of. Not a bad phone, but i prefer the g3.

There is going to be a significantly higher rate of development for the OnePlus One than the G3 simply because it's more of a phone developers will flock to.
However, I initially had the OnePlus One and sold it to a coworker to buy the G3. I couldn't be happier.

That's a petty good and thorough review. My biggest concern with the device is the quality control issues. I don't want to get one with a bad screen and be stuck. I hear their customer service is just terrible.

My brother's oneplus slid off from knee height (basically out of his pocket in his shorts when he Sat down) after a few days of ownership. Screen is done, 50% of it doesn't work. Light crack on the side of the phone. No damage on bezel.
I took the risk and dropped my nexus 5 a few times from similar height before my jump and it survived each one.
Food for thought.
Oh and I also had a OnePlus. While I did really like the phone, his drop and the customer support issues I've been reading about among other little things made me uncomfortable keeping the phone long term. Also the g3 being the same screen size feels a lot better in the hand. I can essentially use it one handed while the 1+ proved to be more challenging.

Two days after I bought my G3 I got an invite to buy an OPO. So I ordered one with the though that I'd pick one and either return my G3 to T-Mobile or sell the OPO on eBay. I used the two side by side for about two days and it was honestly real tough decision. I came from a Nexus 4 then 5 so I love vanilla Android with my own added flavor. So with that in mind a lot of things really sparked my interest in the OPO once I installed slimkat and set it up. Then after using for a day the battery seemed to drain faster than my G3. The camera seemed comparable so I decided to really test them. I went out driving and while I don't suggest driving and taking pictures I did. And this is where the G3 starts to walk away with my needs. The cameras focus is so much quicker and this resulted in much better pictures. Given that I have kids and they don't stay still I need a camera that meets that need. I sacrificed camera with the Nexus phones and I want about to do it again.
And finally, I've grown fond of the buttons and and phone just feels much smaller in my hand than the OPO. The G3 is actually a little wider but the OPO is much taller. I noticed no difference with the screen resolution. However, the OPO played sound in videos very loud so that's a plus. But the G3 is sufficient in that department. So I sold my OPO and am still rocking the G3.
So. If you must have aosp the OPO will always run it better. If you want a better camera, battery life and slightly smaller feel stick with the G3.

Thanks for this, I have a couple of questions for you but first background.. I bought a G3 a couple of weeks ago. Excited I brought it home, rooted, setup and started snapping pictures of my daughter playing at night in the living room. Instantly my heart sank. They were fuzzy, blurry and overall crap. My G2 and N5 dominated the G3 quality. I continued to use it for a couple days but the picture quality in low light just sucked so I returned it. Finally got an invite to Oneplus and now have that. Camera quality seems much better in low light. Daytime out side pictures are fine with pretty much any flagship phone you buy these days, my issue is with indoor low light. I mean, I have the lights on but its not sunlight. Anyways, I am not happy with the yellow tint along the bottom of the phone nor the size, it's just too tall. Plus the lack of accessories gets me.
With that said, does your G3 take good indoor low light pictures? Does it focus fast and snap clear pictures? I'm not looking for photographer quality here, just not fuzzy and blurry. When I returned it the guy offered to exchange and I opted not to but now I'm kicking myself wondering if I just had a bad device so that is why I'm here asking you.

Because T-Mobile refuses to make it a flashable package, the OPO will never have support for Wi-Fi Calling. That's something to consider when deciding between these devices.

It's not as simple as you think. It's not just an application. It's built into the modem, the framework, settings etc. They would have to build an update package for each phone. T-Mobile doesn't have the rights to do this. Just like with the iPhone, the manufacturer has to build the technology into the software package. So, it's on Oneplus to build it to work with WiFi calling. Just like it would have been on LG and Google to build it into the Nexus line and Apple to build it into the iPhone.
NOW, it is on T-Mobile to request this but this can delay phone release times and increase overall costs. But specifically, with the Oneplus, this phone is not sold by T-Mobile so they have not vested interest in trying to get them to include the technology.

In some cases I found the OPO to perform better in low lighting. But it was inconsistent for me. Many times, it would not focus. Most if my pictures are taken indoors without flash. What surprises me is you compared the G3 to the Nexus. Imho the G3 destroys the Nexus in low light settings.

To be honest I can't really remember the N5. I just can't remember thinking it was that bad. Plus it costs half the price of the LG. At $600 I expected way more. Maybe I'll buy a used one on eBay and see how it goes. Thanks for the response.

I think if you're happy with the OPO you should stick with that one. All these new phones are so close in regards to specs and abilities it just comes down to preference. I was so close to taking my G3 back to T-Mobile that I made it to the store to return it, but I didnt have the original receipt so I had to go home, but upon testing it a little longer I decided to sell the OPO on eBay for a small markup.

if top quality low light photos are a priority, the HTC M8 is the way to go...

I have been through a ton of phones, flagship mostly and this hands down takes the best pictures in daylight and low light situations. I have no issues at all with the camera.
The battery life is another thing, not terrible, but not the greatest. Definitely miss my flex in that regard, granted it was a bigger battery.
Overall it's a good phone.

Nexus 5X and iPhone 6s. Anyone else have & use both?

I know the overwhelming majority will shun the iPhone, considering the forum. But I'm curious if anyone else is in a similar situation.
I bought the 5X when it was released and right around the same time my work bought me an iPhone 6s. I've been a long time Nexus user and this is the first iPhone I've owned since before my Nexus One. I gave them both a try for about a week each, right off the bat. But I quickly settled in with the 5X as I'm pretty hooked on rooting and making minor tweaks to make the experience perfect. However, as time has progressed and I began seeing how useful little features like force touch can be for coworkers and friends who have the phone, it made me start going back to the iPhone more.
I now find myself popping my SIM into the iPhone for a week or so. Then, when a new kernel or ROM update is released for the 5X, I switch back to that for another week or so. I've found that the cycle is just endless and I can't seem to break it. Both phones are fantastic in their own right and both offer unique experiences that I just can't seem to sway away from on a permanent basis.
With all this back and forth, I can say three things for certain...
1) The Nexus 5X takes better photos. I did not expect this to be the case but I've found this to be true in just about every case.
2) The iPhone size/build quality are absolutely perfect. I suppose the Nexus 6P would be a good comparison in terms of build quality. But man, Apple built the perfect size/feeling phone this time around.
3) The external speaker on the iPhone makes the 5X one sound like garbage. I am on conference calls with my phone set on external speaker A LOT. So this is something I notice daily.
Anyway, my Fiance thinks I'm nuts for constantly going back and forth. But after a few months of this, I still just can't make my mind up.

It's funny because last night I was reading a review comparing the 6S and the 5X and one of the things that came up was the ease of integrating apps with tasks on the iPhone. My daughter has the 6s and last time I was there she wanted to forward something from my phone to a contact and it was a little cumbersome. She had said the exact same thing, "..this is nuts dad. It's so not intuitive." I had to laugh reading that last night. Anyway, my wife asked why wouldn't you get an iPhone if it works better? (She has a Sammy S5 unrooted) Is it just because it's Apple? So then I went into the litany of changing roms, kernels, rooting, overall experience and all the time I waste spend messing with the phone and chatting here. I didn't look up but I'm sure she was shaking her head. lol
Anyway, if you don't want to mess around with customization and trust Apple to do the right thing then it's probably a no brainer other than the exorbitant price they charge. Both my kids have one and they are indeed very nice and sleek devices with great battery management. Thanks for the response. Adding to your point of great integration with the iPhone, the seamless coherence between my iPhone and my Macbook Pro is fantastic. Using the Reminders/Notes apps on the iPhone and on OSX makes working on the go refreshingly easy. I tried to replicate this with the use of Google Keep and Google Calendar reminders, but it just isn't as fluid. And when it comes to the delivery of notifications, IOS does it with such a "professional" feel in comparison to the cartoony like notifications on Android.

I'd say my biggest gripe with the iPhone, is the lack of customization. I just hate how they try to force you to vomit every app icon onto your home screen. I've navigated around this by dumping all my apps into a single folder and putting it in the dock. But this is nowhere near as good as having a dedicated app drawer like on Android.
It looks like my conundrum is more in my changing of taste for what I want/need out of my phone experience. But I keep trying to hang onto all that I love from Android.

And then there are those apps that you just can't get Apple store to approve and thus you're out of luck unless you jailbreak. And there is no Chainfire to get you through that process either. lol. Yeah, the kids have Macbooks also, forgot about that. They love the seamless integration. I don't think I'd want an iPhone to tempt me but they are nice for sure. And they rave about the battery life. Well time for me to tweak my Nova launcher Pro that I got with my $50 Play Store credit, flash an updated kernel, and configure some new options in Cataclysm's latest mod. I go back and forth between a 5x and iPhone 6 Plus and have a Nexus 6P arriving Saturday.
The 5x is going back to Google as I just don't get great battery life with it. The 6 Plus has the best battery life of any phone I have owned and I don't turn anything off. Doze is getting Android to that point but still not at the same level as the battery efficiency on the 6 Plus.
I have had the 6P already and sold it but loved my time with it so I found a 32gb Aluminum for $425 on Swappa so a late Christmas present for me.
So I'm in the same boat. IOS is more polished but you are limited to what you can do. Android allows so many options to tweak that you can never totally be satisfied. I can and do use both.

Facetime and iMessage have no real equal in Android. They just work so well between you and other IOS devices. No compression of MMS messages and Face Time is great for when you are away on work.

The 6s is no comparison to the 6P. The 6s Plus is. The 6s and 5x are comparable. I too had a 6P at the outset but when I opened the box it was like, "whoa.. this puppy is huge." I tried to like it and although I liked the performance immeasurably, I just couldn't handle the size. It was just too big for a pocket device. I think if I had a purse I could have gone with it. Hmm.. that didn't sound good. I mean if I could carry it in something other than my jeans or gym shorts pocket I might have given it a longer try. It's bulky and it draws a lot of attention when you turn it on too. Sometimes I just want to read a quick text or email but you pull that bad boy out and you gotta do something big with it. Text ain't gonna cut it. But the battery, display and sound are incredible and I know a lot of people that love the 6 so I'm sure they are loving the 6P.
And yes, we do need a Facetime app or at least something that will communicate with it if that's even possible. Probably not, Apple is pretty protective of their software.

How is the battery on the 6S compared to the 5X? I know everyone raves about the Plus iPhone models, just wondering how the smaller one does in your comparison?

Completely agree. My "problem" is actually a great one to have. Both phones are so good, in their own ways, that it really just comes down to the experience you prefer. It's the experience preference that I seem to be struggling with, as of late.

I had this same issue with the Nexus 6. I tried for many months to get used to the size but simply couldn't do it. It was just too big for me. Which is why I couldn't get myself to even consider the 6P because even though it has a much better build than the 5X, it would never work for me in daily use.

In stock form, the 6S battery lasts considerably longer with the same usage. However, after flashing Elemental X kernel the 5X battery is actually quite good. As bobby janow said, the iPhone 6s has the slight edge, but with custom kernels the 5X does get close. With either phone, it's rare that I run out of juice before I head to bed and plug it in.

The problem with the 6 is the width. The 6P is the same width as the 6/6s Plus so it is much easier to hold for me.

I have both, and I have two SIM cards(One for work, the other one for personal use)

Switched from the iPhone 6 to the 5x.
The battery life on my one-year old iPhone 6 still kicks the crap out of the 5x, even with Doze, sadly. I could go a whole 7am to 11pm day on the iPhone and barely make it, whereas by the time I get home at 5pm with the 5x, it's out of juice.
But I like the 5x so much better, and the 6P is just too large for me (5'7"), so, I've gotten used to charging for 15 minutes when I get home.

Surprisingly the Nexus 5x IPS panel displays a higher image quality than the 6s IPS panel in every metric except max brightness, though the iPhone isn't very far behind.
It's also worth noting that with more strict quality control the iPhone will have less defective devices such as yellowed screens, though it is still a possibility.
However considering the price difference the 5x shouldn't beat the iphone in anything. The fact that it has a better IPS panel and possible takes better (or similar) pictures as well is kinda sad for an iPhone of nearly twice the cost.
iPhone 6s 16GB: $649 USD.
Nexus 5x 16GB: $379 USD (less on sale already)

What's interesting is that if I put both the 5X and 6s side by side and turn brightness up to 100% on both, the 5X display is clearly brighter. So it's strange to me that Anandtech's article says otherwise.
When my fiance gets home from work I'll use her S4 to take a picture of the 5X and 6s side by side at 100% brightness, so you can see what I'm talking about.

Nexus 5X
This comparison is a good representation of how most pictures from each camera look. Both take sharp pictures in most lighting conditions. However, the Nexus 5X consistently takes more accurate pictures as far as color is concerned. We have rather warm lighting in our living room and the 5X captures the real life color tone pretty much spot on. However, the 6S makes it look like we have significantly higher kelvin bulbs in the living room. So in terms of color accuracy, the 5X wins just about every time.
However, if you look at the the ornaments on the bottom left side of the tree, as well as the wall to the left of the tree, you'll probably notice that the 6s handles the low light area slightly better. But both cameras are definitely not great in this category as both produce rather grainy low light areas.
This info is neither here nor there, but I figured I'd include it in the thread anyway.

Why is the tree leaning towards the left? That is more of a concern that the low light.

I don't have an iPhone 6S, but I do have a vanilla iPhone 6. I was looking to sell my OG Nexus 5 since my 5x had arrived, and some dude traded me his iPhone for it. I'll admit, iOS has gotten quite nice over the years since the last time I've actually owned and used one, which was the iPhone 3G. Display is beautiful, thing is fluid in speed, and some other things are nifty, but I still only use it as an iPod.
Now, another phone that I have that I would totally use more often is the Galaxy S6. That phone is a freaking beast, only to be almost completely killed by TouchWiz. Unbelievable display and colors, a PHENOMENAL camera, amazing speaker. It's literally almost perfect in every single way..... Except for TouchWiz. Even with all the specs, the phone slows down to an absolute crawl at times, apps just suddenly force closes, fingerprint scanner sucks compared to Nexus Imprint and TouchID. It's actually kind of a shame.

Is it really worth the price

Hi,
My friend is planning to get a 5t along with his note 8. Few questions-
1. How is this phones screen as compared to note 8's screen, comparing them at max settings?
2. How smooth is the OS? He is skeptical about it since he is switching from stock android and touchwiz.
Any other down sides of this phone? I hope the screen is really an infinity display like the s8.

I really like the curved edges of the S8. I prefer the S8 in terms of the display it is curve display which makes the screen to body ratio very low.
In terms of OS. I would prefer the OP5T.

I've had and regularly use a lot of phones due to my work. One of them being the Note 8.
The Note 8 comes out of the box set at 1080p, but does have the edge in the display department (no pun intended) if you set it to QHD. However unless I'm purposefully staring at it looking for pixels I can't really tell a difference in practical day to day use. The 5T has a gorgeous display and on mine at least, the colors are more accurate. The display is made by Samsung for OnePlus so it's honestly top notch in terms of quality and the "jelly scrolling" issue that was present on the OnePlus 5 for some is gone now with the 5T. So, is the Note 8 better in terms of display? Yes. As it should be, the starting price is about twice that of the 5T. Is it worth twice the asking price? Absolutely not.
The OS kills Samsung's flavor. Touchwiz is a hot mess, and it's even worse when you've had it for a few weeks and Touchwiz starts to really lag. It's much better on the Note 8 than the S8+ due to the RAM upgrade, but it's still there and really irritating. It's been an issue with Samsung phones for years. Oxygen OS is smoother than Touchwiz and frankly, smoother than stock Android on a Pixel in my experience. But that's likely due to the specs of the 5T (I have the 8GB RAM/128GB model). OnePlus changes very little about stock android, they only add a few things that make it a little more convenient and slightly more customizable. It's not a skin as you'd find on a Samsung, LG or Huawei among others. The OnePlus destroys Samsung in terms of smoothness of the OS and multitasking/general use.
One downside people talk about is the camera. Camera is a mixed bag. Honestly that side of marketing with smartphones is ridiculous. The Samsung has the edge, but that's all it is. There's not a smartphone out that can replace a DSLR and there's not a single one out that doesn't have noise or other issues in low light or when pixel peeping. Auto mode for auto mode in the same circumstances there's not enough of a difference to warrant the price hike either. Is it better on the Samsung devices? Yep. But only marginally in the real world. I can't count how many times I've shown people shots taken in identical conditions of identical subjects on all the phones I have and no one can get it right as to which took what shot. There's no clear winner and there's very little difference between them. People tend to just pick a bandwagon and hop on it. The differences come when you really play with pro mode and work to shoot with each phone's strength, but that's not real world use and that's entirely invalid for comparisons or determining which phone to buy. In real life people don't schedule shoots or wait for ideal lighting and conditions for their phone to pull it out and take a photo. That's what professionals do, and professionals don't use smartphones which are the equivalent of drug store disposable point and shoots. People in real life buy a phone they like and they pull it out in a split second on auto mode and snap a shot of the kids, the dogs or what have you.
Down sides depend what you are interested in though. For example yes, the 5T doesn't have an edge display. It also doesn't have the nasty glare or slippery feel that comes with the newer Samsungs. Also if a person relies heavily on the Samsung gimmicks incorporated into Touchwiz, you'll find the 5T very bland and lacking. Personally I never use the "advanced features" on Samsung phones and the only thing I use on my Note 8 is the S pen. And I do love that thing. If you don't like those things and want a more stock experience or a faster phone with at least twice the battery life (my 5T gets 9-10 hours SOT every time I test it, the Note 8 does great to get 3, sometimes almost 4 if I really gimp it for battery life) then the Samsung is the one with the downsides.
Different phones designed for different folks. With the OnePlus 5T you get what you pay for. However they absolutely cannot raise the price again without adding certain things such as a higher resolution display, an IP rating and what have you. With the current $1,000 flagships, you don't get anywhere near what you pay for. They're priced way too god damned high and don't offer enough over phones like the 5T to warrant twice the price. But if you can get them for $600 or less, they're the better buy unless you really care about battery life and specs.

Thank you so much for such a detailed review. Is the infinity display on 5T really worth it without the edge display or the side edges/curves? We don't have a opo showroom in our state so can't really check the phone physically. 5T is not water proof, flash is also not good, no vr compatibility, audio speaker is just fine. Any other points that we need to keep in mind? Are they still cheating with benchmark tests?

I've never heard OnePlus call it an infinity display. And it's just a term Samsung uses. Yes, on Samsungs you have the display spilling over the edges. Some people like it, others don't. I don't. It has a horrible glare and it alters the picture on screen for the worse, not better. The edge display makes things look really weird on the Samsung phones. So I prefer the flat edges like the 5T has and that Samsung had on the S7 and below, with the Edge display being optional. The bezels on the OnePlus are slightly larger than on the Note 8 and the S8 but not by much and not enough to hinder the experience. It's still a 2:1 ration (or 18:9, however you like to say it). It's not quad HD, so right, no VR, but is the same ratio and looks gorgeous. It's hard to explain. Yes the resolution is lower, but it's not noticeable unless you really pixel peep. Quad HD isn't enabled by default on the S8, S8+ or Note 8 and you don't notice much difference when you enable it to be honest. Most people use their Samsungs on 1080p and don't even realize it. Most aren't tech freaks like us and don't even know you can turn it on.
Flash, I'm not sure what you mean about it not being as good? I already addressed photos above, the flash is fine and not noticeably different in every day use. 5T is not water resistant (even the Samsungs are not water PROOF) but OnePlus has stated it will stand up to splashes just fine. Unless you need to swim or shower with your phone, the 5T should be ok. Audio speaker is mono like the Samsung, but is louder than Samsung and sounds slightly better, though the Samsung has the edge if you use headphones. Headphone sound quality is slightly better with the Samsung. Speaker is better on the 5T.
Benchmarks, I don't know. But they don't mean anything real world either. Like the cameras, it's largely a marketing gimmick. Whatever single or multi core score it gets doesn't mean a thing when translated to actual use. But yeah, it kicks everything else's ass. But it should, being that it has the best specs in the industry for this year. So I don't know if they still fluff numbers, but whether they do or not they still win in the spec pissing contest.
Edit: Simplified, if you can get a 2017 flagship for less money than a 5T costs, or within $100 of the 5T for the Note, the S8+, the V30 or the Pixel 2/2XL, it's worth it to get the flagships. If it costs any more than that, they're not better "enough" to warrant spending the money and I'd go with the 5T. Because the only areas they're better are either gimmicks or they are only marginally better, not several hundred dollars better.

Once again thank you so much. Last 2 queries can you please post a photo of the edges and a pic which shows all the bezels? I have a S7 and I get your point but it will be hard to explain to him. Second I was talking about the benchmark cheat in which opo was involved in, some senior members made a detailed thread about it, Google one plus one benchmark cheat XDA. Has anyone tested the 5t to find out the real benchmarks?

He just messaged me to ask you this, he will be getting a Gadgetshieldz protector for his 5t which is installed by soaking the protector in water mixed with detergent or some other chemical, since the phone is water resistant will there be any issues with the screen or any other component if the liquid goes inside the phone? Lastly is oneplus one guaranteeing software updates till 2 years?

Hey dude, let me give my 2 cents since I owned the note 8 and the 5T.
1. The 5T display is REALLY good. I'm the type of person that barely notice a difference between QHD and Full HD. As a matter of fact I'm using my note 8 on 1080 p cause I cannot tell the difference. Of course there is one but i barely see it. The point is the 5T display is excellent.
2. The 5T is insanely fast. OnePlus is known to have zippy software and it's very consistent throughout the UI. That is the last thing to worry about on the 5T, performance. It's absolutely stellar and it is amongst the fastest phone out there period. Whether it's an iPhone or pixel or whatever else, the 5T is top 3 hands down.
Now your friend has a note AND is getting a 5T as well? That is the absolute best combo to have besides having the note and an iPhone X. He is gonna love it and will be able to switch back and forth. Tell him to pull the trigger, the 5T is totally worth it.
I forgot to answer your questions about downsides of the phone. Well it doesn't have any IP ratings, it doesn't have wireless charging and the camera isn't the best. It's ok/good but definitely not great. The hardware is there but the software still needs some work (camera).

I wouldn't worry about those screen protectors that you soak in water and apply on phones, it's made to be that way. Of course if you go crazy and purposely pour water in the headphone jack or USB x port then you'll have issues. But splashes here and there will be no issues. As far as updates, who knows. We know for sure Oreo is coming and most likely Android P but beyond that I haven't heard anything personally.

The moment I get home and have both phones handy I will post some photos, sure. And again, the benchmark thing doesn't mean anything. It doesn't matter if it scores 15,000 in Geekbench or whatever. What counts is real world use. For example, the iPhone scores spectacularly well in benchmarks and is a train wreck in day to day use. I sold my iPhone X already, but it was a jittery mess. Scores are high, but real world doesn't reflect that. Samsung scores pretty well too but again, real world it's a mess. Stutters and lags abound in Touchwiz. My Sony scored lower than my others and it is the smoothest performance hands down next to the 5T. If you're into benchmarks I'm sure you can find answers on here but I'm telling you, they're just for folks to "nerd out" on. They don't mean anything in the real world. But yes, OnePlus was caught fudging the numbers (why, I don't know since they are the king of specs anyway) but I am not sure if they still do.
As to the screen protector, as long as he doesn't submerge the phone he should be fine. But keep in mind - the Samsung is not water proof. It's water resistant. So water CAN damage it. The OnePlus is not rated as water resistant, but OnePlus says it's fine with things like splashes or rain drops. He's not going to hurt it using a wet application screen protector.
Updates - Who knows. Manufacturers always over promise on updates these days. They claim it'll be updated for a long time and they'll roll them out fast. OnePlus and Essential so far are hands down the best in terms of fast besides Google themselves, but OnePlus has dropped the ball on long term before. The 3 and 3T are getting Oreo, I'd imagine the 5 and 5T will get Oreo and the next major update at a minimum. Beyond that you'd have to ask them. I imagine many don't bother since people tend to upgrade every year or two but if you plan to use it for 2+ years you'd be best served to ask them. Though Samsung definitely won't be updating theirs fast and I doubt they'll get anything beyond what the 5T does either. Manufacturers want to sell phones. Not keep old phones running for years and years. 2 years is the outside for most manufacturers. Where you have a win on the OnePlus is the developer community. The bootloader is unlockable and you can install any ROM you want. With the specs it has the phone will be supported in some way for years and years, just potentially not by OnePlus themselves.

I no longer have the 5T. Someone offered to trade me a note 8 factory unlocked brand new and I had to do it lol. The resale value is why and ultimately the note is the superior phone.

I have heard the One plus is the best phone, is it true? What about a comparison to the Iphone X?

Waiting for the photos my dear. Is the warranty of opo taken care by oppo's service centers?

Just for a giggle, my last THREE phones cost less than my 5t. I bought all of them direct from China and they all exceeded my expectations. I kept the last one - a Xiaomi Redmi Note 2- for two years (unheard of for me!) and the only reason I've given up on it is because the power button is failing. To my amazement, in a side by side comparison, it holds up to the 5t pretty well, in particular having a screen with much more accurate colour saturation. Compared to that, is a 5t worth £499 Vs the £117 the Redmi Note 2 cost? Heck no! Do I like the 5t? Yep! Would I buy another if I dropped it tomorrow? Nope, I'd buy another cheap phone from China because they offer fantastic value for money

I talked my wife into buying the OnePlus 5T after months of listening to her complain about her Moto X Pure Edition and me having to constantly factory reset it (probably at least once a month to keep her happy). No idea what she was doing to the thing as i didn't have nearly as many problems with my MXPE, but regardless i finally talked her into buying a new phone. I hoped at the very least to alleviate myself from having to constantly listen to complaining about how slow it was, how it couldn't take a good picture to save its life (the pictures i can agree with, they were pretty horrible), and having to spend a couple hours backing up data, factory resetting, and restoring her photos and whatnot every month. She's really picky with phones and had her heart set on a Note 8 (especially after i picked up the GS8+ about a month or so ago for myself) but she was really turned off by the $900 price tag of the Note 8. She thinks that it's completely ridiculous to spend that much on a phone, which i agree with fully.
Thankfully she ended up listening to me and ordering the OP 5T. After she received her OP 5T and got it all set up, she fell in love with it. I i have messed with the phone quite a bit and first thing that hit me was that I immediately enjoyed the user experience. I had previously run custom ROMs on my MXPE and this phone is truly in a whole other league. The speed of it is incredible. It even makes my GS8+ seem like a slug at times. The software experience is really refreshing. Minimal changes to stock Android with the tweaks that are implemented done very seamlessly and with a purpose in mind. The screen, although it's "only" 1080p and not 1440p, is incredibly crisp in my opinion. I had it side by side with my GS8+ and honestly preferred the OP 5T's screen over my S8+'s. I'll also admit i do not like the curved screen on the S8+ at all so that may have something to do with my opinion on the OP 5T's screen quality. The cameras aren't quite on the same level as Samsung phones, or the pixel line for that matter, but they're by no means bad cameras. I've seen numerous reports that the cameras are terrible or that they simply don't take good pictures. I had my wife take a pretty good amount of photos over the last few days so that i could see the quality for myself and they honestly aren't anywhere close to being bad. They blow her previous phone out of the water (not that it's really difficult to do). All in all this phone IMO truly is a flagship caliber phone without the flagship price attached to it.
The only downsides that i have found so far -
1- It doesn't properly/fully support Verizon (i'm on StraightTalk but i use the Verizon towers/4G SIM) which means that i won't be switching to it
2- This is probably more of an Android problem honestly, but SmartLock doesn't work well/consistently on the OP 5T. There's a workaround floating around the internet to disable trusted agents in the fingerprint/security settings and that does work, but only temporarily. After a reboot it just stops working and sometimes even after using the workaround it stops working for seemingly no reason. Pretty frustrating for my wife when my GS8+ utilizes SmartLock perfectly. We're both hoping that this is addressed in a future software update
All in all though, this phone is a no brainer for $500. If you're on a service provider that utilizes GSM you just cant beat the price to performance ratio that this thing has. And that software experience, lawd have mercy is it good.

While I don't think any phone on the market claims to have a camera comparable to a DSLR, there is something to be said for having a capable camera and there are pretty significant differences in photo quality between a 5t and phones like the Note 8/Pixel 2/iPhone X when attempting to capture difficult shots, e.g. low-light, moving objects, etc. I was considering a 5t in addition to my Pixel 2 XL to fill my interest in modding, tweaking, flashing, etc since my Pixel 2 XL is locked. I played with my friend's 5t for a bit to specifically test out the camera and found it just can't keep up for my needs, and didn't leave me with a lot of confidence. When a camera performs poorly in specific situations, I'm less likely to use it. If most of my shots were of non-moving objects in broad daylight, the 5t would suffice. However, most of my shots are of my kids, who are very active and often in low light and indoor situations in addition to being outdoors in broad daylight. The best camera is the one you have on you and for capturing moments in my family's life, I wouldn't want that camera to be the one on the 5t.

Its worth the price. You can see comparisons on youtube... Its the best phone since they released op 3 period

1. I was so glad to switch off Verizon earlier last year when I got my Pixel XL, to goto T-Mobile. I'm saving money, am on a network with the same speeds, and have the luxury of buying non-carrier phones.
2. I had this issue with SmartLock on OxygenOS as well. it was annoying, and they need to fix it. I switched to 8.1 AOSP firmware and all my problems went away. Oxygen was okay, but AOSP custome firmware always manages to be superior to stock firmwares.

I'm the same as you, but with the screen and not the camera. I went to a Pixel 2 XL from a Pixel XL and found that I just couldn't use a phone with a poor screen. I had to dump it in favor of a good screen that wasn't curved and had an unlockable bootloader. The 5T fit the bill nicely and the camera is average, but then again I don't have kids.

This is what i'm thinking of doing too. Might be worth buying one to test for yourself and send it back if you don't like the 5T? It'll be interesting to read others users thoughts on this.

Hey I love the 5T...the Pixel XL is junk, well, at least the screen is. It has issues no doubt. 5T screen is better IMO. Camera, obviously not as good. Neither has an external SD Card?!?!?! Why!!!!!
Anyway, for the money, 5T is hard to beat honestly. Dev support is descent, but not like HTC or Pixel/Google phones.
I had an S8+ for 1 day. Of course, since you can't root without breaking everything like Android pay and Safety Net...no thanks. The S8+ is a near perfect phone, but their abillity to allow you to unlock the bootloader and customize...is nonexistent. Got rid of it. I'm in the US, so the exynos won't work in this country which does allow bootloader unlocking...ridiculous.
I've been an HTC fan for 8yrs now. Just sold my HTC 10. The camera on this OnePlus 5 is better than anything HTC has produced ever. The camera isn't that bad. The OnePlus takes photos as good as my daughter's iPhone 7 Plus. And that camera is no slouch. In fact, head to head, my photos are often better with the 5T.
Anyway...I can imagine the 6 and 6T are going to be a pretty nice. Snapdragon 845 already confirmed for the 6 in a few months they claim it will be released.
Otherwise, I'm not personally dropping $800+ on a new phone no matter who makes it. Which rules Pixel, Huawei, Samsung whatever, and Def iPhone garbage out of the picture. I never spent more than $500-600 on any phone the last 8yrs. HTC resell is pretty good, plus I would wait about 4-6 months after their premier release version to buy it and it is discounted.
Also, my HTC 10 charge port started smelling like burning plaster and wouldn't charge. I had to send it back, and it could take 4 months for them to "evaluate" the burning in Taiwan, then send it back to Seattle, where they say they might not even replace it. They just want to examine it. It is under their uh-oh warranty...so don't know WTF they even care what has happened to it, they will give almost anybody a replacement phone.
Oh well...saw further below that you got the 5T and are keeping it. Version 6 will be out by end of March...so, take it from there. So far, really like the OnePlus...just wish it had a slightly better camera and an SDCard slot.

I was using a Pixel XL for a year and pre-ordered the Pixel 2 XL on launch day.
I got my Pixel 2 XL on October 18th and used it for 2 weeks and there were a lot of good things about it that I liked. It only had a few issues that I could not overlook:
The screen was of poor quality. I'm not talking about unsaturated looking, either. It had harsh blue shift that was impossible not to see in normal day-to-day usage. It also had very poor picture quality when used in a dark room at low brightness. Like everything was too dark yet bright parts of pictures were very bright. Like the contrast of the screen was junk. This was also apparent when viewing pictures at full brightness, but only if I held up my Pixel XL next to it and compared the two. Again, very apparent at low brightness, not as much at normal brightness. Since I like to use my phone at night in the dark, this was a huge pain point. I had no burn-in or noticeable grain in the screen. I was worried moving from a Pixel XL with a quality Samsung panel to a Pixel 2 XL with a questionable LG panel would be a problem, and I was 100% correct.
The battery charging speed. This was something that the Pixel XL wasn't very good at, and I couldn't even get 1% per minute. The Pixel 2 XL was in the same boat, slow charging. Even slower than my old S7 Edge with a larger battery!
These two things were just too much to accept with a $950 device. I returned it to Google for a full refund. Bought the 5T 128GB model on launch day and received it on Black Friday. The 5T has a good screen (like the Pixel XL) and the fastest possible charging option. I also saved like $400 buying the 5T so I got a PS 4 Pro with the extra cash. It's been the best decision I've made since buying the original Pixel XL which was a great phone.

Same here !

At first I got OnePlus 5T.. in this phone everything was great, except for camera. Camera is a complete disaster - I do not know how people can be taking decent pictures without optical image stabilization. In my case when you look carefully at edges - there was a blur. Tried many camera softwares - the phone simply can't take good pics without OIS. Based on rumors, OnePlus 6 doesn't intend to include OIS in the camera either. Which is sad, as camera modules are about $15 a piece.. likely OIS would be a few dollars more. So, in summary:
OnePlus 5T:
Pros:
- Everything about the phone, screen, performance, development community
Annoyances (not a deal breaker)
- Separate switch on the side of Do not Disturb, Silent, Loud mode. Why on earth this can't be done via volume keys (Mute -> Vibrate -> Loud) and perhaps few other modes?
- Fingerprint reader., especially in the middle of the screen. Mobile device makers are attempting to convince us that bio-metrics are safe, while even US government wasn't able to prevent breach of biometric data of its own employees..
- Mobile camera in the corner, not in the middle of the back panel - in place of a fingerprint. Sometimes camera is obstructed by fingers, perhaps it is just a matter of habit.
Deal breaker:
- Crappy camera with lack of optical image stabilization. No matter what software does via EIS - it is not the same
Outcome: OnePlus 5T returned.
Then - decided to get Pixel 2 XL, hoping that it would get better shots. What a disaster of a phone it is.. around 1,100 Canadian - that is on sale.
Pros:
- Perhaps camera, but in two days took some photos, they didn't look nice either
Deal breaker/disasters:
- Screen - non bright, cheap looking
- I also didn't like the curvy screen. No benefits, as the image is displayed on front of the screen, not on the curves. Only adds to ridiculous and unnecessary cost of the device.
- Screen edges - round. Maybe this is Google's "Style", but falls into a complete disaster category in my book. Even worse - initial version of the software had these roundish corners on top, and at the bottom had three white software keys on black background. Of course when the menu was on, lower corners were squared. When you look at combination of round above, and squared below - you feel like you are not seeing right, and time to visit a nuthouse.
- Even better - with the update to fix burn in issue - menu became lighter / grey color, with transparency - with white buttons. When you are hitting the soft buttons - your mind registers as if you are hitting background.
- Support.. Google won't admit that they include screen burn in issue as part of their warranty. But they do - it took > 10 minutes in chat with Google Support to squeeze out of them the simple confirmation that burn in is covered by the 2 year warranty. So if you are unfortunate to end up with Pixel XL 2 and can't squeeze the confirmation from Google - IM me, and I will gladly share the conversation transcript
- Even better.. when you tap on the phone while it is off (and on too) - it is making hollow sound in the middle, hollow surface is approximately 2./3 of the width of the phone (in the middle) and 3/4 of the phone vertically (in the middle). This gives a feeling of a very cheap and uneven device which doesn't feel solid.

But the phone is still needed.. I looked on Ebay - there are many brand new Nexus 5 and 5X for couple of hundred bucks.. Also, yesterdays hardware is dirt cheap brand new. E.g. Lg G4 is $120. Yes, G4s randomly die, not all of them can be rooted, but still.
Nexues run Camera NX.. Also, just realized, that before Pixels, Google used to publish their camera software without limitations to their own hardware. APK sites should have old versions of the software. When you are looking for older hardware, remember that Camera NX needs 64 bit CPU.
If you are still on the fence, good luck with the choice! And remember that if you do not need latest and greatest - you can get solid performers (models from a year or few ago) for 1/5th of their initial price.

You may consider the camera.

In hand the 5t feels slick and lighter than the 2xl. The 2xl I had it without a case and was able to grab the phone a lot better than I could with the 5t without a case. That being said yes both phone have fallen from my hands or from my lap when I get out of the car. The 5t is able to take a hit better than the 2xl. The 2xl casing cracked, the 5t casing only has scratches. Also, ive actually dropped the 5t in the bathtub of running water as I watched better call Saul while showering. I did Grab it quick but it was fully submerged. Phone still works. Sweet.
Didn't notice much screen size difference.
One other thing the lowest screen setting isn't low enough when laying in bed at night time, you'll need to download an app to make it lower. My wife has the pixelxl, her screen goes much lower than mine.

Great, and regarding the screen quality / colors / contrast & black crush ?

I went from 5T to first gen. Pixel XL. Simply put, 5T camera is crap. I got a feeling that the problems with the camera wont never be fixed properly. If good quality photos are needed, I cant recommend the 5T.
Otherwise 5T is a great device and I liked it.

I'm switching from the 5T to a Pixel 2 XL (ordered with a good deal) just for the pure Android/fast updates and better camera. 5T is an awesome device specially for money.

5T is amazing. The biggest and pretty much only downfall is the camera between this and pixel XL 2, and I personally am talking from coming from the original pixel XL, which camera was also better there. If you can get past the camera, 5T is the way to go.

Also came from the 2 XL and I'm not one to try every flagship on the market before deciding which one to keep.
I had exchanged the 2 XL for defects twice. From touchscreen issues to dead pixel clusters. I eventually decided the display wasn't worth the price of the phone.
The blue shift is way over blown. Two of the devices I received had it and one didn't. It's not something that bugged me or noticed in daily use.
What did bug me was horrible brightness uniformity and graininess. And between receiving 3 different devices there were massive variations in display quality (color temperature, graininess, digitizer response). So it seems like buying one is like playing the lotto.
I miss the camera and the front facing speakers (no where near HTC m7,m8, m9 quality but better than the 5t).
It's a nice phone but it's not worth $1k.

I came from an original pixel to the 5T, yes the pixel camera was better but imo some pictures look more natural looking with the 5T camera. I guess it's down to personal taste. Low light photos the 5T isn't as great as the pixel but it's still a good camera on the 5T.

I came from the 2nd gen Pixel and would not hesitate to recommend the 5t. The screen on the 5T has better color saturation and higher max brightness. Scrolling/smoothness isn't quite as good on the 5T, but it flies just as fast. Dash charge is insanely fast. The camera on the 5T can perform just as well as the Pixel under the right conditions but I wouldn't count on it for every point and shoot situation like you can with the Pixel. I snapped the attached pic a couple of week ago and thought it turned out great with absolutely no editing. The Google cases were cool, but the OnePlus Ebony wood bumper is the best I've had on a phone and now that there's a sandstone white variant, it looks just as good without a case. The biggest reason for me to switch to the 5T was the developer community. Since you're on XDA I would assume you're in to ROMs and customization which has already exploded for the 5T only a month or so in and for the Pixel is pretty well nonexistent. Phones are pretty much expensive toys for me and the Pixel was way more expensive, offered a great experience, but was ultimately way less fun.

I think I've got a pretty rough idea of what I want in a phone, and sadly as of now, there is no such thing.
I'll probably be taking a 5T and see how I like it. I know the camera isn't gonna to be as good, but I've seen like every YouTube videos that exists on the subject in the past few days and I think the only way I can decide is to try by myself.
I will keep this thread updated when I'll be receiving mine if I indeed do take one, so that the people that are in such situation, having a supposed superb flagship and that are disappointed can find a bit of information switching to a supposed "worse" phone.

Question Who is pre ordering?

Im coming from a z fold 3/ S22 ultra, wasnt planning on getting the 4 since the upgrades seemed very minor but i had some play time with it at Samsung and was surprised how much i liked it. Cameras are much improved especially the zoom (which was my big complaint on the 3 coming from the S21 ultra and 22 ultra).
Felt the decrease in weight and could actually notice the 3mm increase on the front screen. Figured im running out of storage on the 512gb fold 3 anyway so got the 1tb version.

Against my better judgement, I bit even though the differences were minor and since the deals last year were better through Samsung. Hope I don't regret it.
I was really considering the Vivo Xfold instead but I could not pull the trigger on that one because of lack of Volte support here in the US on my carriers.

Waiting for the Fold 4 512GB, GW5 Pro, and Buds 2 Pro to get here. Hopefully they come a few days early which is the typical. All showing an estimated delivery date of August 26th as of now with "Preorder" status and cancel button still available.

Yeap. Samsung's been a dull knife for almost 3 years straight now. A lot of dropped balls.
No SD card expandable storage makes this device a no sale right off the get go.
If you have a 1tb one reloads will very time consuming if have a large database. Worse there's nothing to prevent data loss on the device if the OS crashes or if the phone gets mangled.
Samsung knew better... screw em.

Sure, let me know when it comes with a warranty or support in the US and maybe I'll look. Also, what kind of water resistance does it have? Looks great but I need to know I won't have an issue especially since the Fold is what I use for work and the Pixel 6 Pro handles personal things.

IPx8, so there's that.
However it's battery is only a 100mAh larger than my N10+'s which easily get 11+hrs SOT. I highly doubt any of the Folds can survive 2+ years of heavy usage without major repairs (excluding normal battery replacement). Their track record in this regard sucks.

The Fold 4 does have IPx8, but my comments were in regards to the Xiaomi offering. I'm a little too aware of what the Fold has going for it. I've seen a vocal minority complaining about Folds on Reddit but I've also seen plenty of people with Fold 2's that are in use daily without any trouble. My Fold 3 is in perfect shape 1 year on.

It's a leading edge technology that literally stretching the materials to their design limits.
In a prefect world this might work... the Fold's fail in a predictable pattern. When Samsung's QC is good its less. Samsung's QC isn't what is was 3 years ago though. Plenty of failures across the board, not just with the Folds. This may work in your favor. Samsung is desperate to make this design succeed.
All my old phones as old as 12 yo that are still fully functional in spite of a hard lives. The Folds are incapable of that without major repairs. This N10+ in my hands is almost 3 years old, it looks, feels and runs like new. It's always case protected; something that's hard to do with a foldable. It's projected service life is 2+ years more. So far I've seen nothing new that can effectively replace it. Google Android is also very much a large part of the problem since Android 11 it's been a scoped storage paranoid mess.
Xiaomi hasn't invested the time and money Samsung has although they may have learned from that. If Xiaomi isn't bragging about its IP rating it's for a reason...

I want to like this, but the only real thing I'll notice are better cameras, rebadged fold 3. We just lapp it up every year. Lazy ahhhse Samsung, in the sense it's not different enough from its predecessor.
IWe all have different needs. If you've never gone fold before also, it'll be nice, after you've been resuscitated from the shock of that price

Then Samsung force constant selinux enforcing down your throat and the only way to set it to permissive is by actually hacking into your kernel. Sounds like fun right?
Every year Samsung force you to use AMOLED display which is suboptimal. Why not give your customers alternative display technology options such as IPS panel for instance?
And if you are unlucky enough to get stuck in a very annoying and mysterious bootloop then as a new user you will have a hard time to get back out of it on a Samsung device. It's much easier to get out of bootloops on other manufacturer's devices (those with a real working fastboot).
That's why I prefer Xiaomi devices nowadays. Cheap price, good hardware, easy to unlock (1 week waiting time which is kind of annoying but still somewhat acceptable), easy to root and debloat and customize
And with Xiaomi devices you can actually choose between OLED and IPS panels...
And the best part is : setenforce 0 actually works on Xiaomi devices! I know most Samsung folks can only dream of doing that (even as root!). No need to be jealous, just buy Xiaomi device next time! You won't regret it!

Don't get me wrong the Samsung hardware is great (well minus the display) and their stock Android OS is rock solid if you ask me.
The only problem is Samsung has this policy of needlessly annoying their power users by adding all these useless protection features that nobody really needs. Why can't they be more like Xiaomi?
Conclusion: Xiaomi devices are much more developer friendly than Samsung devices.
There may be other good phone manufacturers out there but so far I've only tried Sony, HTC, Samsung and Xiaomi (in chronological order). Xiaomi is the clear winner for me by far. None of the others can even get close.

i'm not a developer or interested in rooting (anymore). trading in my Fold3 and S22 Ultra, for an unlocked 1TB Fold 4 and Watch5 Pro. The Fold3 was my personal device and the S22 Ultra is a (free to me) work phone. Employer is switching to iPhones and allowing Android users to keep their (work) Android devices or use a personal device for work (as long as it passes security checks). this is the perfect scenario for me, making my decision an easy one: Fold 4 with dual sim capabilities for $216.

LOL, microSD card and headphone jack are EXTINCT. Yes they are NEVER coming back so we really need to stop beating that dead horse already!
The offshore devices are nice but what good are they if you cannot use the USA bands? Dealbreaker right there...
Some things I wish we had:
IR Blaster. Don't think it's ever coming back. It may be more of a regulatory thing than anything else.
S-pen included with internal storage like Note proper, right?
Periscope camera if not too bulky.
I thought the Fold 4 was getting UFS 4.0 storage?
Some sources indicate the Flip 4, like its predecessor, won't be getting WiFi 6E capability! That's madness if true. We recently updated our WiFi here to support this connectivity and the speed is superb. It was "maddening" to find my Flip 3 was getting under 1Gbps because there was no WiFi 6E. Yet the Fold 3 has it?!
I like the Flip 3 but I like the Fold 3 even better. $900 for the Flip3 is great trade in so of course I sprung for it. What I'm not thrilled about is the cost to jump to 1TB. If it had 16GB RAM like the S21 512GB then maybe. I dunno. I don't really need that much space on them as the video capture doesn't really need space (like the iPhone 13 Pro Max) so there's that.
At least we have esim now out of the box. Finally!
I may run caseless for a while too. The s-pen with case was "free" with the deal but ugh, so much bulk. I hate, HATE bulk. I buy these aramid thin ass covers for my devices. I see latercase already has it for preorder. I'm going to wait and get essentially the same thing off Amazon for half the price LOL!

I'm on the fence with the iphone 14 pro max in a few weeks. Got to see how much better the camera is going to be. But I read it's going to cost 15% more? WTF a 1TB 14 Pro Max is going to cost more than the Fold 4 MSRP (512GB). That's nuts. Lightning still Apple? USB 2.0 speed in 2022! Madness! At least it will have WiFi6E so airdrop to our NAS will be OK for time being. And I'm not a fan of the sideways exclamation point display cutout FFS! I have no problem losing FaceID for a power button FP reader. The ones on the Fold3 and Flip3 are FLAWLESS and super convenient IMHO.
Ok enough rambling on here. Clock is ticking. Need to start a preorder waiting room thread LOL!

I have a hard time staying away when Samsung has a new release, particularly a phone that appears to be as good as the Fold 4 is looking to be. I traded in my S22 Ultra and I am really happy with the Trade in Deal samsung offered....can't wait ..fingers crossed they ship early like they have usually done in the past...

Nice to see you here force I am on the fence of pre ordering not many deals in canada this time around.

I would have bought the X fold 100% if 5g worked on rogers i Canada, much prefer its form factor and camera to the fold 3 or 4.
