My S4 mini won't turn on, doesn't vibrate, can't launch recovery or download - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So a few hours back I picked up my phone, but it didn't respond. A few minutes earlier it worked fine, and now it just seems dead. I cannot launch recovery mode or download mode. The phone does not respond to me holding the power button or something, there is no vibration and no visuals on the screen. Removing the battery and plugging it back in does not work. Leaving it charge for a while does not work. (assuming that it even charges). When I plug in the phone into my PC via cable I hear a sound that something is connected, but it doesn't show up on 'My PC'.
What do I do?

The same happened to my sister! Nothing worked, probably the motherboard died. Used it at leaset for spare parts for my other s4 mini. Especially the LED panel is so precious, it's cost is like half the price of the phone.

Can the motherboard really die like that? One moment its fine, the next second dead?

Yeah, likely. I ain't a geek or sth, but the same happened to my sister. Was looking for a solution for hours, but it's probably some random variation in voltage or sth that burns some part on it and then it dies. You don't have to crack the phone etc., it can happen randomly.

Wouldn't a broken motherboard make my PC unable to make a sound when it's connected? Also, when it's connected to the PC and i hold the power button for ~15 seconds, it disconnects. This would mean that the power button still functions

Then it's deffinitely NOT completely broken. A dead MB would definitely NOT identify the phone in the PC.
Did u try entering Download mode & connecting to ODIN, trying to load FW again?

FW = Firm Ware i.e. software that is flashed onto chips. aka ROM.
But if you can't go to download mode you can't flash stock ROM again. So Yes sounds likely some component has failed or maybe just a bad solder joint, a short, etc) which is not allowing power up,( either way you need someone to fix hardware & install stock using jtag for you, probably not worth the cost on our old phones in most countries. but if you can buy a used phone with eg a damaged screen or other problem you may be able to get 1 working phone by swapping parts eg power board ...

The same happened to me last august... I posted here, but no one ever helped me https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-mini/help/weird-bricked-gt-i9195-stuck-black-t3619023 i just think that it's some kind of programmed obsolescence, my phone was 4 years old and it just shut off and never light up again after closing a simple call... F*** Sammy and their timers!

Just happened my nephews phone. Was intermittently responding to buttons and now not at all. PC detects it and shows as "HS-USB Diagnostics 9008" in Device Manager.
There are a couple of guides online for using applications on the PC to interact with the phone using this device ID, but it seems to be mainly focused on LG phones. Anyone know if there's anything that can be done for Samsung devices?

The exact thing happend to my S4, it suddenly turnd of while im using it, did anyone find a solution?

[Q] Help!! a100 Blackscreen

i have a a100 with the latest flexreaper rom installed and im stuck with a pretty serious issue:
a couple of days ago the tab was acting real slow and sluggish and getting bad battery life didnt think nothing of it so i just rebooted a couple times and left it alone . all was good untill the battery hit 10% and i plugged it up using the factory ac adapter. the next day (maybe 6-7 hours later) i went to turn it on and nothing no vibrate no screen flash nothing; other than the power button turning blue as i pressed it and it would stay on for a couple hours but still no other response from the tablet.
im at my wits end on what could be wrong and now i got my wife with her foot on my neck till i get it fixed. can anyone help me?
ive tried to do a hard reset with the reset button tried to boot into recovery /bootloader no dice
(also my home button flashed a couple time i pressed the power button) dont know if its relevant but wanna get as much info out as possible
wondering if anyone can help me...

It may take awhile for someone to see this and form something to try, random bricking for no reason is rare, its almost always some error by the user. However have you attempted adb connection to it? Leave it powered off, connect to the PC you used to unlock the boot loader then power on. Does the PC make the USB connect sound? Does the Acer vibrate? Did the home key blink again?
It really sounds like your boot partition is wrecked which wouldn't normally happen outside of flashing. If boot loader is trash then it won't know what to do and just sit there. No recovery or anything else.

it made something like the connect sound but instead of the regular duh doom sound it did a dadadoom (kinda hard to describe the sound) but it was faster than ive ever heard the connect sound before which is weird. the tab didnt vibrate and it seems the home button blinks when the tab is dead and needs recharged

Yeah I know that sound it means USB connected but error for some reason. Its been shown if this thing dies all the way down it wont read the battery correctly and probably needs to be sent in. Before that I personally would unplug it open it up and remove the battery for awhile, maybe an hour then put it back and plug it in. But thats me, not the advice I'm giving. If you have warantee on it use that.
The batteries on a lot of devices and laptops etc have something of a fail safe, if the voltage drops below a certain point it trips to prevent cell damage, however it renders the battery useless.
I haven't searched out much past that if a reset is possible by us, but it seems the pack is trash after or needs sent in.
Since this is a sealed unit you void warranty opening it (well unlocking the boot loader did too) so you can't send it in for repairs without paying for it.
I hope someone can jump in and help figure this out, and prove me wrong.

Weird, This exact same thing happened to me. Used it in the morning and now after work it won't turn on. I had already tried disconnecting the battery, but hadn't thought to leave it disconnected for an hour. My tablet has been running the leaked ICS since it came out and The last factory reset it had was about a month ago. It was working fine up until this. The power button seems to be responding correctly, the issue is that after the LEDs light up, there is no vibration or display. I hope someone can help us with this issue.
EDIT:
It won't connect in ADB mode. It will only appear on my computer as an APX device and since there is no vibration I am unable to boot into fastboot. Any help or suggestions? All the threads I have found have involved booting into fastboot.
i am also having this problem. i set ti backup last night to save to box i turned it on this morning it.worked set it on the charger came back to a frozen screen. I turned it off now just a black screen it turns on or the home button dose but nothing comes up on the screen

I also tried to hit the hardware reset button and it does not help.
If the screen is blank while powered on its in failsafe mode, in other words is bricked, has to go to Acer.

This just happened to me a few weeks ago as well. If you are still under warranty send it in to Acer, thats what I did. I just got an email saying they had fixed it and were sending it back for free!!
At the time I was on the 9/02 JB build. I wonder if this issue is caused by faulty hardware or if it is an issue that was made by rooting and unlocking it? I don't know enough about this stuff to answer that though, but it does make me think whether I should root/unlock it when I get it back or leave it stock.
Also thanks Pio_masaki for helping me a few weeks back wasn't sure if I was even going to send it in until you said they most likely won't be able to tell.
I highly doubt they even CARE when sending these in. They will void for physical damage most likely.

[Q] s4 shuts down seconds after powering on

I left my perfectly fine i-9505 s4 to charge overnight to find out it did not respond to anything, holding down the power button or power+voldown+home did not result in any sound image or vibration.
Removing the battery and re-inserting it makes the s4 respond to the power button, but the phone shuts down seconds after powering on. This also happens when I try to enter recovery, download mode or insert the charger.
It even happens when I use my usb JIG, the downloading screen appears for a second, after that the screen blacks out again. Tried removing the SD / SIM cards.
The only way I can connect it to Odin for a second (at least as far as I know), is by:
1) removing battery,
2) inserting Jtag
3) inserting battery
4) remove JIG (very quickly)
5) insert USB to PC (very quickly)
Yay! Windows makes the "USB connection" sound, before making the "USB connection lost" sound a second later and the screen blacking out..
What could cause this? Is it my battery? Connector? Software (jamals 4.4v6, faux123, mj5 modem)?
Have you tried directly plugging it into the charger or your computer without the battery?
Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I did try that, the screen does not turn on if I plug my charger / USB cable from PC into my S4 when the battery is removed.
What could cause shutdowns after 2 seconds from booting? I hope this is fixable!
It sounds like there is a physical defect in the device. If it was software related (this can be caused by a borked up ROM or Kernel) you wouldn't see the same behaivor in Download mode and that doesnt' use either the ROM or Kernel.
You could have something physically broken inside the unit that is causing an electrical short once something common to the system and download mode is activated, which would cause the reboot. That could be the USB port that both the system and Download mode will constantly poll the USB port looking for a connection, but only after a second or two. It won't look at the USB port immediately when teh GALAXY S4 splash screen pops up so that's why you get a second of it working. There are 100 other things internally that it could be too.
I'd say make sure the charing port is cleared of any debris. If that doesn't work, I'd say it's broken and needs to be repaired. Without knowing exactly what is causing the issue I wouldn't suggest trying to fix it because you'll cancel the warrenty by doign so and might not find the problem. It could even be a faulty memory chip on teh circuit board that wouldn't look broken to the eye.
Since you can use Download mode for more than a second, you obviously can't try to restore to stock, which is the prefered go to method to fix things like this.

Sounds very much like a hardware malfunction. Without having the device on hand, I can be of no help, unfortunately. If it's under warranty, I suggest you try to get a replacement.
Thanks for the replies. You have convinced me that this is a hardware issue. I have no clue as to what might have caused this defect.
I will soon try a different battery, and if that fails I will contact Samsung.
Unfortunately though, my firmware is custom and this may void warranty, which would suck since the cause of the issue is probably not related to the software.
A day later, the problem appears to have solved itself. I'll keep you updated.
My S4 was working for some time, but the problem returned, the phone shuts down seconds after booting (normal boot / recovery / download mode / USB-Jig induced download mode..)
HOWEVER:
Sometimes, when I connect my S4 to a charger, it turns itself on (first displaying the charging icon) and then starts booting, showing the Google boot animation (since I'm running GPE). This animation keeps going for minutes, and then the phone shuts down again (black screen, does not respond to anything.

You're just delaying the (possibly inevitable) death of your phone. Use your warranty while you still have it. At least I would in your situation.

I had to send my S4 back to Samsung THREE TIMES before they realised it was a hardware error. The first two times, all I got was a factory reset.. Which of course, didn't help.
I'm pretty sure you were right, it was a bad power button.

Model G3223 - Charging Issues and Black Screen/Flashing White Light at Boot

Hey everyone,
So, I got a new Xperia XA1 Ultra (G3223) through a trade running stock Android 7.0. Checked everything and initially it looked fine.
Over the last few days, things have been acting weird. Every time I start the device, it gives me a blank (black) screen with a blinking white notification light - it doesn't even show me the boot screen at times when it boots. Just yesterday, I got it to boot by pressing VOLUME UP + POWER after being in that state - but, that's not normal. Does anyone know why in the world my phone does that?
Furthermore, when using the Sony charger that came with the device, it takes over 6 hours to charge and doesn't even show the charging sign while charging. Could this be an Android 7.0 bug or is something seriously wrong with my phone? Only one time since I got it, did I get it to charge normal with the charging sign and everything; it actually charged quite rapidly at that point.
Any help would be appreciated with this, guys, because I'm at a loss. I do want to mention that the device doesn't seem to be recognized by the computer, so I'm not even sure that the cable is original.

Try a new cable and/or charger. (I found I had a bad charger once)
Since you had computer issues, I'd start with the cable. Also check the charging port on the phone for debris/damage.

How is your phone turning on? Power button or inserting the USB cable?
Only thing I can think of is perhaps a stuck volume key placing the phone into recovery or flash mode.
Try turning on the phone with no USB cable attached. Before you turn it on, press the volume keys a few times to make sure they aren't stuck and then power on.

The thing is that it's weird.... For one, sometimes when I use the touch reset/turn off button, it takes at least two minutes to reset, or it doesn't even reset. Then, when I turn the phone on while it's off, the phone sometimes enters into this weird state with the flashing white notification light. I never power on the phone via USB cable, so I don't know, really. Yesterday, I shut the phone off to test it, plugged the phone in to charge it, it wouldn't charge while off, but then hit power on, and then it wouldn't turn on, so I used VOLUME UP + POWER, and then it turned on just fine.
Hi
Happened also to be with my older Xperia J.
Backup your phone (cause you'll lose your data), connect it to a PC (or Mac) and install Xperia companion, then select "repair phone" or something similar (I know the written in Italian version ).
Wait and it will be all fine.

Replaced battery, phone charges but won't react to buttons

My phone's battery was almost dead, so I bought a replacement battery and installed it. Nothing weird happened during the "procedure", and the battery charges fine, but the phone won't boot. The screen lights up to show the % when I connect it, but after it's off, it won't light up again when I press the power button.
I'm guessing something happened to the cable that connects the buttons to the MB. Or could it be something else?

Impossible to know what has happened as we didn't see the repair.
Will the device boot to any partition ?
Recovery ? Download mode ?
I've seen several devices lose the OS if the battery goes completely dead....and pulling the battery would do the same thing on a susceptible device I would think.
Unless you can get into DL mode or recovery....it doesn't look good for restoring the device....g

No, because it won't respond to any button press, so I can't boot it. Is it possible to access adb or something when the device is off? It does show and is identified on my PC when it's connected, so I don't think it's the case that its drives have been wiped.

The screen turn on fine when I first connect it and it starts charging, but I can't turn it on. I send to a repair shop and they diagnosed that the power button is not getting any juice, so I ordered a replacement for it, I just hope the issue on the cable and not on the connector in the MB.

Question phone wont turn on, need help

i was playing a mobile game that has high graphics, when my phone started to showing network private dns not being found error message. also started having a bit of wifi issues, had to reboot to fix it
5min later screen freezes during gameplay and turns black. couldn't do anything. i had to reboot it, but the same thing kept happening over and over again for while. until the last reboot, above the poco logo boot-screen a thick static line showed up and instead of going into the homescreen it stayed black.
can't seem to charge it either, when i connect a usb i don't hear any sounds. what happened? why is this happening
P.S. battery was still high if this needs to be known info, was wired to my pc. also didn't do any updates either.
edit: there are times i hear the boot up jingle when pressing powerbutton, but thats it
edit 2: can connect with usb (hear jingle), but screen is still black
but can you reboot to recovery or bootloader, by holding the right buttons when rebooting. (recovery power + volume up. release power when screen on. bootloader same story but volume down).
The usb port and the display cable are really close to each other. maybe because you kept the usb plugged in while gaming, you created some sort of movement and partly disconnected the display cable.
maybe just maybe your screen going bad because over heat try to call your phone if you could hear the sound yep sounds like your get bad screen and need replacement

It does - phone is garbage imo. Unless u lucked out and got unlocked version of GPU ( Search konabess 870 ) I'd probably sell it / swap it for some 865 device.
Something like mi 10t pro can do 20hours screen on time with right tweaks
First take it for repair - this is hardware issue that they need to fix under Warranty - then figure out what you wanna do with it
it happen to me when trying some pixel oriented roms. the phone itself can charge but the screen always dark, you might be able to feel slight warn on the back. yes its hardware and I change the whole motherboard freely on xiaomi service center

if you feel it vibrate then its probably the screen better take it to a repair shop if you have warranty but dont let them give you a new phone or you'll lose your data
tell them to keep your data
what if its hardware? is my data gone?
depends on the part of the phone if its the motherboard your data is likely to not be restored by the average repair shop
