Hello and happy new year 2016!
Well, meanwhile wait for my z3p next week, I would like to ask if some friend around here had already test the z5p in some VR headset in 4k resolution in some way.
If so, may be possible some comments about, in special if there some app that could be set in stereoscopic split view in 4k mode, so if posible play movies on VR headset taking advantage of high dpi screen for virtual cinema big screen.
I wonder if could be posible set the VR split screens, each one to 1080dpi, so it will make a really great VR resolution experience and wondefull use for the awesome 4k screen.
Thanks for further comments and best regards to all.
4k is not supported on Android for now, therefore no compatible 3rd party apps. It will however be supported in the the next Android update, Marshmallow. Let's wait and see what that brings us.

I mainly use my Z5P to watch 3D SBS format movies using VRTube and Colorcross headset, the resolution is so much better compare to my LG G3's 2k screen. You wont even notice the pixels. btw X-Reality and Super-vivid mode also works using VRTube which in my opinion makes the images more crystal clear. I've post screen shots on a different thread somewhere here of it working i don't remember which thread.
Thanks for reply and great info, just got VRtune and would test with my DEFAIRY VR Headset, the app seems lots better than then others that I tested, but not already a long tests, since I receive my Headseet just few days before xmas, and had been somewhat busy...
Thanks again and best regards to all

not yet a Z5p user but, the screen door effect should definitely gone by now, leaving only pure 1080p VR display. don't get me wrong, it's software wise 1080 but will be upscaled nonetheless to 2160 resulting slight bluriness (due to 1080p resolution) but more importantly, no screen door effect.

Do you have a source for 4K SBS? All I've been able to find have been 1080 SBS

Hi! And thanks for for take time to reply, well I do not know what is door effect (in video and vr stuff I am a really noob )... But I am mostly wonder about if with a root access to 4k resolution setting could be possible a VR app that may use 2 x 1080 frames for VR headset (or even at least 2 x 720 pixels frames due black surrounding spaces that seems needed by the proper VR eye lenses alignment) of the current generic VR and Google-Cardboard clones headsets uses... This wonder me because if with a standard 1080pixel phone screen the view is very nice, however the double screen frames for the lenses are really of low resolution, since with an 1080 pixels lcd screen of others phones, minus the black surrounding areas, the square frames that are set by the current VR apps shows somewhat pixelated views...
So If the double frame for a VR headset could be made on a Z5p even at 720pixels each frame, that would be great and at 1080 will be awesome view by far for sure...
Best regards to all.
I came across this headset:

What do you guys think?
A more important question is, will we be able to use the Z5 Premium with Playstation VR?

Hello!
Well, I dont know in deep a lot about VR PlayStation but as far I may understand, VR-PS is about a new Sony propietary VR headset, that includes its own internal LCD and cpu and low latency hardware (thus, so, means expensive...), for play PS games.
The Zeiss headset appears to be an some version of optical adapter for use with phones, like others OpticalVR headsets that are kind ofvclines of original Google-CardBoard VR concept, so, I not sure but almost, this kind of VR headsets may not be compatible with VR-PlayStation, at least that Sony make an app for such task with a phone and a optical VRheadset, bur I dont know if such app exists at least as far I know by now.
Since above, is that I wonder if the such great 4k resolution of Z5P could use with an VR app, for a 1920x1080 frame for each eye operation, with an OpticalVR set.
That is I may comment in hope that may help with your question.
Best regards to all.

Hi xaser, I upgraded to this phone specifically for its potential for virtual reality. I was disappointed to learn that I need Marshmallow to unlock 4k in third party apps (I'm on EE and it hasnt been rolled out yet ) but I can tell you without hesitation that watching my 1080p movies in SBS format is quite a joy on this phone. SDE is very minimal compared to my previous 1080p display phone (Samsung galaxy S5). Can still notice the SDE but its definitely not distracting as on my S5. But I never viewed through a 1440p phone to make any comparison to that res.
But I have a question for others. How can one monitor what resolution a VR video player app is running at? Is there a 4k, 2k, 1080p test SBS patterns that one could use to compare when loaded in an SBS app?
This phone has real potential for VR, its a crying shame that this 4k display is not hyped for VR. Nearly every review I see, all say, its a waste because one cannot discern the difference with a 1440p display, none of them think of VR!
In terms of processing power, the phone will surely struggle to give smooth VR but I discovered a couple of apps that enable remote desktop to a PC where you can play your PC games, blu ray films, and even Oculus Rift games streamed to the phone and the motion sensor of the phone emulates the mouse on the PC! I am still yet to explore that feature as I am now waiting for a new VR headset I ordered as my old one is kinda rubbish for my new Z5 phone in terms of its phone holder design as this Z5 gets bloody hot quickly and so the suction pad mechanism of my headset is pretty bad for it. I have a solution though for cooling it and that is to use re-usable gel packs.
what VR headset works with z5p with bumper case?

The Z5P runs in 4K always (it's a 4K display afterall) it's just the content, unless viewed in the Sony apps, is upscaled from 1080p. You can upgrade this to 1440p using ADB and this will allow other apps to make use of that res, but until you go Marshmallow then you won't get any apps that can use 4K - and I doubt services like NetFlix will write 4K compatibility in to their mobile app just for us Z5P users.
I used the ADB trick to run at 1440p and 2160p and I have to say all I noticed was increased battery drain and laggy performance as the GPU couldn't really keep up with pushing 4k res all the time as well as it can upscaling 1080p.
To each their own, however.

I am using Riem III VR headset which houses it fine. Most VR headsets appear to accommodate large phones. I have now ordered a Fiit VR which looks to be a better headset overall. Riem III is a let down with its suction pad blocking vent holes and lack of focal adjustment (though, the reason there is no focal adjustment is because its one of the few headsetsets that can fit over your glasses). The problem with wearing glasses and VR at the same time is that it narrows the field of view. So as a glass wearer, I would prefer having them off and have a focal adjustment on the headset.

Although I appear to have joined years ago, which surprised me, lol, I am very new here, and I am afraid I dont know what is ADB, can you point me to where I can learn how to run that trick?
Even if the 4K cant be achieved content-wise, I think the upscaling still betters other displays in VR mode due to less SDE and that's at least a very big plus. 1440p might be a nice sweet spot especially for playing 1080p movies in VR mode.
I'd still like to know how I can determine what resolution a picture or video is being played at.

ADB is the 'Android Debug Bridge' which allows you to control your device from your PC including pushing apps, pulling files and other clever bits and pieces. It can be obtained as a small installation for PC by googling 'Minimal ADB'.
It runs on a command prompt interface, it will require you to open up developer settings on your phone and then enable 'USB Debugging' before it will work. If you don't know much about what you're doing then be quite careful as you can cause some issues if you're not. Google it and familiarise yourself with it - it's quite simple.
Once you've done that then have a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z5-premium/general/changing-resolution-default-to-2k-root-t3282319 it explains the process and how it all pieces together. Note it is technically an emulated resolution, rather than changing the whole device to operate in 4K, however due to the display resolution of the screen they are effectively one and the same thing.
Hopefully that helps.
Well in the end I never bother with ADP and just waited for the EE to roll out the Marshmallow upgrade which happily got pushed several days ago.
And wow, I have been enjoying watching my blu ray rips ever since. So using a VR Fiit headset (the best of its type that I have tried so far) with a 103 deg FOV, the CMOAR Virtual Cinema app and of course our Z5 Premium phone, you really can enjoy watching movies as a virtual cinematic experience with minimal SDE compared to lower resolution phones.
Now my next step is to purchase a bluetooth adapter for my Yamaha 7.1 AV system to see if its possible to immerse oneself in the virtual cinema whilst sound is fed to my living room AV/speakers.

Personally, a definite improvement. But perhaps read my detailed reviews on Amazon to gauge whether my prioritised needs match yours:
VR Fiit: https://www.amazon.co.uk/review/RJDS38AFAYXQ1/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm
Hiem III: https://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R2DPYONOOAGF6A/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm
I've got FreeFly VR headset and Xperia Z5 Premium. Previously had Xperia Z1.
Difference is huge, much bigger than I expected, and although apps are still rendering in 1080p resolution, there's no screen door effect anymore, and this really makes a difference. Everything just looks cleaner. Not sharper, but cleaner. For me this means waiting for second generation of VIVE/Oculus/PlayStationVR, which will have 4K screens instead of 2K at max.
Considering this one:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Xiaozhai-G...ie=UTF8&qid=1463066646&sr=8-1&keywords=bobovr
Though there's one which is almost identical:

Which one would you guys go for?

Last December I retired the Fire Phone because the wife dropped her and shattered the glass. We found the cost to repair it was more than it was worth.
That plus we had a problem with Straight Talk over billing us and they essentially telling us to suck on it, no refund. We dropped them like a flea bag hobo and went another carrier and upgraded to LG V10s.
Anyhow, my Fire phone has been gathering dust until the idea of using with a VR headset hit me.
Only issue was FireOS no support Google Cardboard.
Solution was Rooting and now it is running Cyanogen very nicely.
So, ANYONE out there using their Fire phone (4.7" screen) with a VR headset?
I looked online and there seem to be dozens of brands out there. I would just like to hear about anyone experience and with what brand.
Thanks
The problem you would run into is it's only a 720 display....the resolution wouldn't be sharp enough for a VR headset

Aww, come on. We are not talking about a VR setup to compete with the Occulus Rift, or the HTC Vive. The headset is 25-30 bux for these.
Yeah, higher resolution would be idea of course, but this is a spare phone and there is no reason not to at least try it. My current live phone is a LG V10.
That has a huge display and high resolution. I will try this one also to see what it looks like.
I've been using my stock Fire Phone with Google Cardboard, it works fine, has some issues with 360 videos and Youtube but that problem was easily solved with a 3rd party youtube app. You can see the individual pixels, 720p works fine but it's not ideal. The performance is actually better than my old HTC One m7 which is 1080p. Cardboard is fine but it's nothing special and doesn't come with straps to secure it to your head, I'd recommend trying a different brand.

Thanks for the reply.
I was able to try it this weekend on a generic VR headset. The make was VR BOX if that makes a difference. I saw 3 or 4 on Amazon the exact same thing with a different brand; anyhow, what I really dislike was the narrow field of view. I switch to my LG V10 and which was a big boost in image size, but still the field of view was bad.
You could see the phone at the left and right of the image. I would say the actual image size was about 60% of the view, and this will not provide anything near a nice VR experience. For 30 bux, what the heck. But it wasn't 30 bux worth. Sent it back for a refund.

Yeah I probably should have mentioned in my response that the novelty of VR wore off very quickly and I never really use my Google Cardboard. If I hadn't gotten it for free I'd probably be trying to get a refund too.

Guys please suggest me can I use vr cardboard with firephone?
I'm looking to get a tablet, and so far the Pixel C is definitely at the top of my list. As eager as I am to order one, I think I'm going to hold off since Google I/O is just around the corner. The rumors I've seen regarding tablets at I/O have all been centered around a new Nexus 7, but I'm waiting to see if there is an update to the Pixel C, or introduction of a new larger Nexus tablet. Along those lines, what hardware updates or changes would people like to see in a Pixel C 2? Personally, I'd like to see an active stylus, and the addition of an SD card slot.
I'd rather they just fix the build/quality control issues with current the Pixel C so it's worth the high price tag. That combined with Android N and I'd be happy. Maybe a folio without a keyboard? Not much really.
1 - Front facing speakers. The speaker placement on the Pixel C sucks and it is hard for me to not cover the speakers with my hands when watching content in landscape orientation.
2 - Fingerprint reader. I don't use encryption or a pattern lock on my tablet because I find anything more than a fingerprint reader to be an annoyance.
3 - No magnets. The keyboard is cool, but I would rather have had a Pixel C without the heavy magnets inside. I understand that it would not be economical to offer it both ways, but I have no interest at all in a keyboard, so it's just an annoyance for me.
4 - OLED display. The display on the Pixel C is pretty much flawless and among the best IPS displays I have ever seen. It is definitely on par with the QHD+ Sharp IGZO display on my XPS 13 9350 and the LG panel in my Dell Ultrasharp U3014 monitor. That being said, I still think OLED looks better. The way vibrant colors pop and the contrast ratio makes me not want anything else, save for something like a quantum dot display.
5 - Anti Reflective Coating. This one is a no brainer and there is no excuse for not having one at this point. Apple does it and it makes a significant difference when using a tablet in a bright environment.
6 - 4:3 Aspect Ratio. Using 1:√1 for the display was innovative and it makes sense in some scenarios, but nobody else is using it and it's just going to be something that people are not going to design apps for. I would much prefer a 4:3 aspect ratio display, which I personally think is perfect for tablets.
7 - Android Bootloader. If they are going to continue to use Android in the Pixel line, rather than ChromeOS, use an Android bootloader. Also, quit punishing me with a 30 second wait every time I boot up with an unlocked bootloader. I feel like the lack of ROMs for the Pixel C is mostly due to this ridiculous ChromeOS bootloader making everything exceptionally difficult.
8 - Faster Storage. Google has historically had abysmally slow storage on Nexus devices and the Pixel C is no exception. Utilizing a faster interface like UFS 2.0, or better yet, PCIe NVME like Apple would make the device feel a lot quicker. It has been shown on devices like the Galaxy S7 and any recent Apple tablet/phone that having fast storage makes programs load faster, install faster, and boot faster. There's no excuse for Google using EMMC 5.0 in a flagship, top shelf product like the Pixel C.
9 - OpenGL 4.5 Support. I have no idea why Google does not enable support for OpenGL 4.5, seeing as how the Tegra X1 and even the Tegra K1 support it. Unless they have a damn good reason not to, they need to turn this on.
Couldn't agree more, but just want to add a number 10. A USB-C CABLE !!! One not connected to a charger please...

Front facing speakers would be nice. ABSOLUTELY agree on the android bootloader, but with this being a "Pixel" device, I don't know that it'll happen. Is there a reason for the 30 second delay with the unlocked bootloader, or is it really just to deter people from doing it? As far as the screen goes, I though IPS generally had better color reproduction than oled, with the advantage to oled being power consumption. I'm with you on faster storage too. I've never understood why a manufacturer would cut corners like this on such a premium device.

According to Anandtech (who actually use display testing equipment to measure contrast, grayscale accuracy, color accuracy, etc,), AMOLED's are as good as IPS at this point. Here is a quote from their Galaxy Note 5 / Galaxy S6 Edge+ review:
With this generation of AMOLED, Samsung has definitely equaled the best LCDs on the market. I suspect within the next year or two it will be inevitable that Samsung AMOLED will be clearly superior to even the best LCDs.

And from the Galaxy S6 / S6 Edge review:
With this generation I suspect Samsung is either meeting or exceeding the best LCDs in quality, and with the next generation of AMOLED it’s likely that high end smartphones will have to migrate to AMOLED to remain competitive.

Agreed.

Dont agree, the nearer to 16:9 the better. 4:3 just wastes more screen.

Strongly agree. It is a frankenstein creation as is, halfway between Chromebook and Nexus.

I find it fast enough?
9 - OpenGL 4.5 Support. I have no idea why Google does not enable support for OpenGL 4.5, seeing as how the Tegra X1 and even the Tegra K1 support it. Unless they have a damn good reason not to, they need to turn this on.

I dont know what that is, but all my apps work and perform well.

1. Neutral, I don't really use speakers at all on my pixel
2. Neutral, on phone, yes it is important on tablets? In just matter of convenience.
3. No magnets are good, keyboard are nice, I don't have to Coupe with shifty 3.rd party keyboards
4. No OLED are really shifty with burn ins. I'm happy with the screen.
5 agreed
6. Absolutely not, just buy ipad if you want 4:3 or nexus 9. The ratio is really good less water space while watching films but nice to use in portrait orientation. The screen ratio is the reason I bought the damn thing. As for 16:9,it is the reason im not buying Z4 tablet being the Sony fan I am.
7.agreed
8.would be nice, but the one we are having is fine really.
9. Waiting for vulkan
My only desire is for Google to make up their mind about the kind of device they want to release. Make a decision and stick to it. This hybrid nonsense is going to be the death of this device due to the ChromeOS bootloader.

So then you'd have preferred the Pixel C delayed? You can always not buy it and wait for what meets your goal?
I agree, its not one thing or another, and is basically a well spec'd high cost Android tablet neither Chromebook or Nexus.

I already own one. I love the design and the hardware. What I'm not fond of is the ridiculous ChromeOS bootloader and kernel requiring a signed boot.img via verity and vboot in order to post boot into system.

I feel exactly the same. At least you have the experience and knowledge to be able to repack the modified boot.img properly. I've been modding kernels using Android Kitchen on my Nexus 6 & 6P for two years now to remove forced encryption. It's ridiculously simple. But for this device, I definitely do not possess the knowledge to repack an image with vboot (although I have been successful in unpacking it thanks to @cheep5k8). I just wish somebody could write up a tutorial or something in order to modify the stock boot image on this device to make it rootable. That way, I wouldn't have to wait or bug any devs when a new factory image comes out, as I'd be able to do it myself.

Yeah, unpacking is an option, but it isn't ideal. Especially when I have to consider the fact that our Jenkins server isn't going to do any of this. Our official builds all get pumped out via this server together. Plus, we flash SU inline in our script. It's just incredibly inconvenient.
1. AMOLED display, because of the contrast, black level and angles of view,
2. Much better keyboard (something like LG K380 would be perfect, it's the only mobile keyboard that I can write as fast as on normal keyboard - I currently use it with Pixel C because I could really write fast on the dock keyboard),
3. Ability to dock in portrait (important for writing).
I actually quite like the aspect ratio. I would buy it if it was 4:3.

I kinda agree. I am not sure that the confusion is helpful for anyone.
However, I'd rather this was dual boot from the start instead of a one/other binary. I accept that ChromeOS isn't exactly suited to touch input (although the Chromebook Pixel(s) made a more convincing case than one would expect, as has the well regarded and remarkably long lasting C720P), and I get that Android isn't overly comfortable with mouse/trackpad/physical keyboard interventions (although, the Pixel C is making that case). What I find interesting is that the Pixel C kb that this is typed on is remarkably close to the Chromebook/box kb (I have both/all three).
Out of all this, I want a properly dual boot device. One that has the option without any dismantling. ChromeOS devices have the ability to dual boot, as do Nexus and/or any Android device that's bootloader unlocked. There's no reason that the 'Frankenboard' Pixel C should be different, particularly as it is a reference/developer/niche device (in the sense that it's not promoted beyond the very interested--ie like most Nexus devices before, say, the N7 or N5).

Tend to use the stock app most of the time as 99% of the time it produces a perfect picture for me, I also have 'open camera' and the 'moment camera' apps installed as well to play around with as well.
As a side not, I use a Rode mic for filming video as not a fan of the quality of the mics on the phone
If we only can have g gcam v6 with night sight and googles great HDR+

I come from Sammy Note 8 to, yaa and mi max 3, honor 8x max, honor note 10 and now mate 20X.
I love all those phones lots more then the Note 8 which i sold after 10 days. I only like phablets with big display and Sammy note is no longer in this category after the ratio aspect 18-19/9 becomes standards, sooo saaddd. I really miss my old loving 16/9 and my old Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra a lot 6,8 inch and 16/9.
That was times.

I just plug the mic into the headphone port and it works automatically, there is no need to change any settings.

I hear ya. My favorite phone was the first Note Edge (with the one edge). Nice width and the edge had some useful apps associated with it. If it wasn't for the poor battery life I might still be using it!
Can someone please post the stock camera apk from M20X AL00 (china) version? The video record stopped working on mine and want to see if reinstalling it will fix it.

i think the recording will still be using the mic from the phone....in samsung camera app, there is setting to control the source....
try recording with you microphone...pulling it near and away from your voice....i think it will remain same volume....which means recording takes place at the phone..

I couldnt ignore this post because I am the same way..I had a Sony Z Ultra, a Mediapad X2 and a Sony Z3 Tablet Compact (which I still have) as my phones but I wanted something more modern and oh boy, since all this trend of bagette shaped phones, it has been a struggle for me to find anything half decent. Finally settled on the Mate 20x which as awesome as it is, still feels so freaking tiny. Having a hard time adapting to the smaller phone but on the other side..damn this phone has great features!
I've just had my new Mate 20 X for a week and overall love the phone.
But the biggest gripe I have with this phone is the retard camera app. Why is it that when the app is set for 40MP resolution on the main camera, it will disable access to the wide-angle and telephoto lenses? This makes no sense what so ever mainly because the default 10MP setting absolutely sucks.. absurd over processing, contrast and sharpening. The best quality and most natural looking images I get is by using the 40MP setting with the main camera (under good lighting conditions). But then if I want to use the wide-angle or tele lens for a particular shot, I have to go back into Settings, fall back to the default 10MP option just so there is access to the other lenses. This is really really so bad. Why isn't there a setting of simply bring able to usr all the of 3 sensors' full native resolution instead of having to fall back to 10MP picture size just to be able to switch cameras? Is there a workaround this or another camera app than can work in a more logical way than the Huawei's camera app?
This aside, I love the phone.. great batter life, super fast, incredible overall build quality, really awesome hardware.. maybe the last great phone from Huawei for the foreseeable future as things look pretty grim for them. But the camera app, wow.. what a nightmare.
Anyway, maybe I'm doing something wrong and I haven't figured it out yet.. tanks in advance for any advice.
Hi, I have a Homido v1, and it is too much small for the oneplus 7 pro !
Does someone could recommend me a VR headset compatible ? (size and maybe resolution)
I think it could be a really good mobile for VR games.
Thanks.
Hi, I bought the homido v2 because it fits.
But the screen size is too big for the lenses, I have to zoom out the content to be good, but not all games have this feature (tested with fibrum, there is the function "correct lenses").
It's strange that there is no VR headset compatible, this is not the only 6.6' screen size.
I think it's the aspect ratio that's the issue.
Ok, so there are just 2 solutions, we wait for a compatible headset, or maybe there is an app to change the ratio ?

OnePlus might even come out with their own since it's their highest resolution phone so far and full screen display.

Thanks! I wait for your feedback.
I already saw this one, I think they updated, because now it's: 4 - 6,5 inches. that's good.
But the max size of the phone is: 163mm * 83mm, the onplus 7 pro is 162.6mm, so it should be fine, but I would like to know if it fits with a case.
And also what about the comfort ? The phone is pretty heavy, so with the homido v2 it pushes on the nose.
Thanks!
Google daydream VR headset is working great with 7 pro. You'll need to install daydream enabler module over magisk, and limit display to 60Hz.

I tried it in a store, and it is too small.
The phone exceeds on the sides.
And why 60hz?

Size is of no concern at all. It's made to hold large phones such as pixel XL. Software is not supporting 90hz. It will work, but you'll be bothered by some pixelation issues.

I mean the width distance of the lens?
Because if I remember well, the daydream was comfortable.
