Mild screen burn in after 9 months, worth sending it in? - Google Pixel XL Questions & Answers

Recently noticed that I have burn in from the navigation and status bars. It's mild enough that I only notice it if I'm looking for it.
Is it worth sending my phone, which has no other issues, and getting some random refurbished one as a replacement? Won't it just happen again?
The only benefit I can think of is maybe ending up with a fresh battery.

After 1 year of usage, I only see a faint whiteness in place of navigation bar(not status bar). I think it is normal(I wish not) because of nature of amoled, it will burn when you left your phone with black navigation bar(when it is not translucent) for long time especially when it is hot. But ofc if you can replace easily it would be good, but danger of refurbished or other defected device I think it would be just another headache and not worth it .

i constantly check my phone for burn in, and when i see it this is what i do.
download "amoled burn in fixer"
tick navigation and status bar burn in
turn brightness all the way up (i enable high brightness in EX kernel)
and then run the inversion as the app suggest.

I sent mine in a while back, got a new device and same thing has happened to this device. I'm just going to have to live with it.

I sent mine in today for burn in (Verizon Model). It started fairly mild but it's gotten to the point where the nav buttons really bothered me. I hope I get a unlocked one back.

what i do to avoid burn in, is set immersive mode to come on whenever im using my browser (chrome). This should help the pixels refresh and prevent burn in.
edit:you also dont have to be rooted or unlocked to do this, which is a plus.
Also, the suggestion above regarding amoled screen burn in fixer does work. i did it with a used Nexus 6 i had purchased. I would run that, then set immersive mode like i suggested. if within a month or 2 you still notice bad burn in, i say you make a claim on the warranty. Might as well use it before it runs out.

It was worth it for me. They had me send in the phone only, and they sent me back a brand new one, in the box, with all the accessories.

Serious problem with my Galaxy S Screen!!!

Hi to all,
A couple of days ago I noticed that when I answered a call the colors of the screen looked bad, and I didn't pay attention to it.
Now my screen has transparent horizontal lines which are pretty visible, kind of like interference you get in computer screens when you take a picture of them.
I would like to mention that I haven't dropped the phone even once.
I'm considering doing a factory resest in hopes that it will solve the problem, but I doubt that it is a software issue.
What do you guys think?
Please advise
Itay
Sounds like a broken screen to me. And definitely like a warrenty case. Restore stock f/w if you have flashed and return it.
Restore the original firmware (if you have flashed the phone) and call the samsung service for the assistance.
the thing is that now I don't see it at all.
It's as if it came and gone.
I disabled my task killer and juice defender, performed a complete titanium backup, in case I want to restore afterwards, and now everything is normal.
It does sound like a hardware issue, but do you think there's a chance it is software related?
I'm asking because I purchased it in europe, and I don't live there, so sending it for repair is something I would rather avoid.
Of course, if it is indeed 100% hardare issue, I have no choice.
That is why I'm asking, to be certain and to see if there are others who experienced this issue.
Your replies are much appreciated
update:
It appeared again -> Did a Factory Reset -> It's still there -> Sending for repair.
Must be a hardware issue.
Thank you for your replies.
I've actually always had slight screen issues with my Galaxy S also. The screen flickers slightly once in a while. I don't know if the radio is actually the cause but it's the kind of thing you might expect from radio interference.
Has anybody else noticed this?

Nope, never seen any flicker. My screen seems to have a defect of it's own though, but I'm not sure if it's worth the effort to send it in, because I imported mine from the UK while I live in South Africa.
When in the sun or under bright light I can see a two vertical lines near the sides and a horizontal line on dark/black colours and when the screen is off. As if those pixels have a grey/brown tint to them. The line is mostly one pixel thick but in places it is two pixels.
They are almost impossible to see unless under sunlight where they are clearly visible where the screen is black.
Does anyone else see this or know anything about it?
Edit: Apparently it's just the motherboard or something visible through the screen and they all have it, so I'm worrying about nothing...
That's interesting...
It used to come and go, but I think now it's here to stay.
It's really annoying and the screen, while usable, is really not a pleasant sight to look at.
I've attached some photos showing the problem.
With a normal screen I would say that it looks that way because that's what you see when you photograph a screen of an electronic device, but the sad thing is that what you see in the picture is exactly what I'm seeing now.
I did a factory reset, so it's in german now.
I heard some Droid X had a similar problem, but didn't know Galaxy S was having it as well.
In any event, can you confirm that after a factory reset, I no longer have root access?
Just making sure so that they don't give me problems with the warranty.
seem like the phone was dropped, and the screen got damaged
the connectors are lose
double posted again....
Really?
That's very weird...
The only time it was "dropped" was from half a meter , it didn't fall directly but partially sideways, it was with a case, and it landed on its back, not on the screen.
I wouldn't even call that a fall.
Unless, someone in my family dropped it without telling me...
Either way, I think there's no escape but to send it to repair.
If you think it's a problem with the connectors, would you try and give it to some local lab to try and fix it or send it to samsung for replacement?
I faced similar problem.
This problem only occurs when I use the phone in 2g mode.
there are occasions whereby the signal bar for 2g is full and when I place the phone near some conductive surfaces the lines becomes very obvious, to the point of irritating.
nit sure if anyone has such problems too
I have same problems with horizontal lines.
I never paid attention if i am on 2g or 3g when it happens. I will now.
Edit: rooted on jm5
-------------
It seems that my phone too has started to do the same thing since last night.
I have called Samsung and am waiting to hear from them now.
I hope this is a thing covered in the warranty.
I have reverted to the local ROM for India and have deleted everything on my device.
Yet it shows lines flickering like you can see on old computer monitors.
Its not as bad as the ones on the attachment above but it is starting to annoy me.
It usually happens when the screen is completely filled with a single color except black.
Eg. When you pull down the notification tray down.
Also I seem to notice that when the wifi is off, it stops.(I dunno maybe a placebo effect)
aditya_t90 ,
I have sent it to Samsung for repair, and they should tell me in the coming days exactly what the problem is and whether it can be fixed under warranty or not.
I will update as soon as I hear from them.
Until then, try to see if it changes when you hold the phone differently, for example if you grip it more firmly or hold it in another way.

When did you send it in and when did they receive it(if you were not there when they got it).
Also how long has it been without your phone?
The samsung service center is shut in my area today.
I will go to them tomorrow and get this sorted out.
Its not like the phone was cheap or anything.
I actually sent it to my uncle in Germany because it was purchased there.
He went to the store where he bought it and the store owner immediately sent it to samsung and said that probably by this Tuesday or Wednesday (so tomorrow or in 2 days) he will get an answer from them and see what's going on.
aditya_90 ,
Just to let you know that Samsung are sending me a new phone to replace the damaged one.
I sent in my phone for repairs and they replaced the LCD module. The problem is now gone.
I suggest that you should do the same while the warranty still holds since it appears to be the LCD that failed somewhat.

[Q] Evo 4 days old, screen having physical issues already.. Help

I just bought my phone 4 days ago, and I'm having issues with the screen responsiveness. It just freezes up at times, sometimes it thinks one finger is touching it and does the whole zoom in/out thing when I touch it, randomly issues commands, touch buttons at the bottom don't respond, and only way it works for a lil again is to touch the power button to turn the screen off and back on. I have a link attached which shows the main problem area is when a lil pressure is put near the bottom, everything starts getting glitchy. It does this with all 3 ROMs I've used, which is another thing, I have to un root it so I can bring it to the sprint store. Since it's a brand new phone, and only 4 days old so far, do you think they will just replace it with another new model, or a refurb? I'd be extremely mad if it's a refurb since it's still in the 30 days. They also added TEP to my plan which I havent taken off yet. But since this is a hardware issue..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7-sNFfQhMY
The video doesn't even begin to show all the problems, but that's one I can replicate pretty well by holding it at the bottom.
Sometimes you get a bad phone HTC isn't perfect since you are within 30 sprint will switch it for a new one no charge.
Just go get a replacement
like others have said get a replacement simple and easy

Eh, I'm on my third replacement, and gettng the last wasn't exactly "simple and easy ". Oh, and guess what needs to get replaced again due to another faulty display (interestingly this is the first phone I'm returning for the display... unless you count screen separation)?
Order a replacement, and when you get it, don't walk out of the store until you're sure the phone is working as it should.
Make sure they are not going to place an upgrade 20.00 fee on your bill.I had a bad screen as far as lifting up out of the frame from the bottom and light leaking out. When I went online a few days later to view my bill there was a upgrade fee and I had to call them but it was painless just had to give up about 5 minutes to get it done.
Just FYI
I'm really hoping when I go in tomorrow, they can return my phone and get a NEW one on the spot. I dont want them telling me they have to order it, etc, because I know they have a lot in stock. Do I just tell them I want a replacement because my screen is messing up when touching the rim of the screen? I really hope I dont get hassled. The phone is back to stock, S-ON, fully unrooted.
This video shows the issue even more. It's so bad today, I can barely use the phone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qW5f1nHUmwY
I got my replacement today, brand new, hardware 0004. My first one was 0003. I am slightly disappointed because I can tell I have the "bad" screen version. It has a much more yellow tint to it than my first one. My rebate is also going to be declined now unfortunately, and it's going to be a hassle I can already tell.
Edit: I thought I have the worse screen, but it looks a lot better than the youtube comparison video I have seen. It also fades the different brightness settings rather than a solid quick change using power control. It still is a tad more yellow I think. I hope I can root this one just as easy as my last one.

[Q] Anyone else experiencing AMOLED burn-in / Image retention?

Has anyone else experienced bad screen burn-in / image retention issues with their Note 2?
I've only had the phone just over 90 days, but I've already got some pretty severe burn-in. I use an app for equities trading several hours every day and after a few months of use, the icons and other parts of the app that remain static are plainly visible at all times on any screen that isn't completely black.
For now to slow it down I've re-themed the app and replaced as many static elements as I could with transparent .PNG files and no text.
Any idea if Samsung will replace the display under warranty for these types of issues? (From what I've been able to find, it sounds like they refused to cover it for the S3, then reversed their position and began covering it for some folks - curious what their policy is now)
Here's an example screenshot - this is a blank white screen. It's MUCH more noticeable in person.
Although I havent had it in my note 2 yet, my galaxy s2 had it. I went in to sprint and they swapped it for me because I had insurance. Didnt pay anything. Goodluck though.

I had it bad on my S2. The notification bar and active apps icons were visible on all white and blue screens and so was my keyboard. Sprint sent me home said they don't see that as an issue and the phone works fine so as long as it worked they don't care. Samsung on the other had took down notes then asked me to ship it to them. Never got to send though because the lady refused to be without a phone. As of now my Note 2 has been burning in the notification bar again after about a month of use. I think that's why they made the S4 notification bar the same as whatever ur background is.

Because the damage cannot be reversed, try inverting your screen colors to see if you can get the other pixels to burn in and equalize. I did about 5 minutes of Google research and saw that the blue pixels burn out the fastest, so trying a negative color should burn the rest of them. Inverting colors can be found in Settings --> Accessibility or (in CM10.1) Settings --> Advanced (under device) --> Screen (tab).

Thanks for the suggestion..
I'm giving that a try, but I imagine it'll be hard to even out ~3 months worth of 4-6+ hour a day usage..

Probably, but it is a fix. Your only other option is to let it continue burning out the pixels as before, without inverting the colors, in the hope that you may be able to RMA/warranty the thing. I guess AMOLED screens are known to have this issue. Call up Sprint or Samsung and see what they will do if the problem gets worse.

All monitors will do it, given enough time.

Apparently for Samsung's Amoled displays, "enough time" equals ~90 days of several hour a day usage.
I was aware that the display could suffer from burn-in/image retention, but I had no idea it would happen this badly and this quickly.

I've got a yellow tint problem. Does it actually go away or is that a myth?

So, I had a 16gb Nexus 5X through Project Fi and decided to return it within 15 days because the internal storage was too small. So I overnighted myself a 32gb one which arrived today. But as l picked up my phone this evening, it hit me: my new phone's screen was tinted a yellow-orange color, like I was using the f.lux app for PC to dim the colors at nighttime.
After some googling I read that it might go away after a week or so because it has something to do with either the screen cleaner or the glue used in LG's manufacturing. I called Google and they said it's not a common issue but that I have 21 days to submit and RMA request. I am really hoping not to have to reinstall a phone for the 3rd time in 2 weeks (4th if you count the wipe I did when I decided to root my 1st 5X before I realized unlocking the bootloader wipes all data), but if the issue disappearing is really some kind of urban legend, I figure I might as well just get it over with.
For verification that it's not a software thing, I took THIS IMAGE on an old iPhone. New 32GB on left, old 16GB on the right. Both phones are at 100% brightness, with cool color temp enabled, and adaptive brightness off. The disparity is actually greater with cool color temp disabled.
I give Google more money and they reward me with an inferior screen. What really puzzles me though is why I didn't notice it earlier when I was using my old 16gb as a reference for making sure all my apps and such were identical, switching between the two constantly.

Send it back and get a new one. It should arrive OOTB like the 5X on the right.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
In my experience it doesn't go away, but if it isn't really yellow, usually the developer option to change to cooler display makes it about the same as a normal display.
On the normal display if you do the cooler display option, then it starts looking too blue.
I do think many displays for other phones are a little too cool and the normal display on the 5x, while slightly yellow has more accurate colors, but I've also seen 5x's with way yellow display which are clearly out of spec.
If you really only notice it when next to another phone then it is probably the right color. If you notice it all the time even when it is not side by side with a phone (which itself might be too cool), then yours is too yellow, especially if that is after applying the "cooler display" option and turning the screen on/off.
Okay, the plot thickens.... left the new (warm) phone screen on at full strength overnight to simulate use. Compared the two in the morning, and with the same options, the 32gb is still warmer, but if I put Cooler Colors on on just the 32gb... the old 16gb appears warmer, which was not the case yesterday. So I will give it a week and report back, as it seems to be getting better.
If you search the thread for color calibration, i think you will have better results on "yellow" display over "cold" display. Trust in me...
Mine was same with yours. After 2 week of usage, it turned to normal by itself. And i am not using cool color temperature setting. Also, check this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/help/nexus-5x-display-yellow-t3232937/

Screen burn in issue

Hey guys, so I have a s9 its about 4 months old. Today i just decided to use fullscreen and hide navigation bar and as soon as i did I noticed a total burn in and dicoloration on the bottom of the screen. Now i know amoled has burn in issues, but in 4-5 months? Luckily i am sending it to service and I should get it serviced upon. This is the reply i got when I asked it the issue was prevalent and persisting "The issue will be resolved by our service expert at the our service center, this issue will not occurs after the service.". Seems a little off. So i am wondering are any of you guys having burn in already?

Yes, but my burn in is the status bar after 3 months of owning the phone. (I don't have the navigation keys up all the time since on the S8 it caused burn ins after it's release and I still don't trust it, even after Samsung said that they "fixed it with a software update") When you scroll it down you can see the line where it changes color from normal white to a bit more yellowish white. I even used bluelight filter quite often to not use the blue pixels as often and to prevent burn in, also tried to always stay below the brightest settings, but after 3 month it is quite frustrating to see that it doesn't prevent it. It's called the "best displays on the market" in terms of color and brightness, but is it really, when it burns in after 3 month? My old S5 got burn ins only after 2 years! I will still use my s9 and only send it in before the warranty expires because I need it every day and don't want a new phone where it will happen again after 3 months.
I had this to with galaxy s8. I send it back for repair 3 times for screen burn in. Now i use the galaxy s8 with the brightness slider in half and not having screen in burning issue anymore. And now with galaxy s9 still no burn in after 6 months also with brightness at half.
