Fixing a dead LG G3 (D855) with a hair dryer - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello people of the internet and most likely LG G3 users. Yesterday my LG G3 D855 died right when I was about to watch some good hentai. I’ve been having screen flickering for ages in the YouTube app and as of late the screen also started to fade to black from the corners, random reboots were also quite common. Android became unresponsive for a couple of seconds and then the screen when completely black in a split second. Tried a lot of things after that: removed the battery countless times, changed with an old battery, charged it for hours at the time (battery wouldn’t get hot so no charging), connected to my desktop. No Android, no TWRP, no bootloader, nothing could make my G3 do anything. I was convinced it became a paperweight. After that I proceeded to disassemble the phone. Disconnected all the ribbon cables of the cameras and the display etc and put them back in firmly. That did do anything. HOWEVER I remembered when I was wasting time reading toxic XDA comments and stuff that someone mentioned baking the device to restore connections between the motherboard and the SOC, or something like that. So I did some research and even though something as stupid as putting it in the oven actually seem to work for people. Mum wouldn’t let me put it in the oven so I made my own way of resurrecting my G3. This is what I did to get it back working:
I’M NOT RESPONSIBLE IN ANY WAY IF THIS GOES WRONG AFTER TRYING THIS. IT IS 100% YOUR CHOICE TO DO THIS OR NOT.
Requirements:
DISSEMBLING
LG G3
Screwdriver small enough to remove the G3 screws
Plastic prying tool (old credit card, solid thin plastic will do also)
Good light source
REVIVING PROCESS
Hair Dryer that can get a fair bit hot
The grill of an oven
Stopwatch
A floor that can withstand heat
A place that can be ventilated in case of toxic fumes (nothing happened for me)
Safety goggles (I didn’t have and so didn’t use)
Electrical fire extinguisher (I didn’t have and so didn’t use)
STEPS FOR MAKING AN UNDEAD PHONE:
1. Remove battery, SIM card, SD card.
2. Proceed to disassembling the phone to the state where you only have the motherboard. I used these guides:
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/LG+G3+D855+Teardown/42288
And
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNymIdIXTyI
3. Place the oven grill on a surface that can withstand heat and then gently place your LG G3 motherboard on it.
4. The heating process:
1.
Turn on the hair dryer and start to focus the heat on the part of the motherboard that is facing towards you when you take it out. So not the part where you see the SOC. See image. Hold the hair dryer close to the motherboard (5 cm space or so) and do this for 10 minutes.
2.
Let it cool down for 5 minutes and turn it around.
3.
Proceed to heat the SOC for 15 minutes and let it cool down fully for a minimum of 15 minutes.
4.
But it back together, hope that luck is on you side and that it will turn on.
NOTE: First boot went all the way till android boot screen when it crashed with screen flicker. I removed the battery and waited a minute or two and tried it again and it has been working ever since yesterday night. This is probably not a long-term solution so I’d suggest just using this to get your data off you phone and moving on to another device as fast a possible.

EDIT: Like I said before use this method only if you find putting it in the oven is to risky. My phone has now stopped working. This really is a temporary fix for if you just want to backup you remaining data.

i have used G3 for last 3 years and its was still good phone in market ..ok to the point
i have 3 G3 and one i bought for experiments and i put in Oven and guess what it show some sparks and burn from botton pat of the board so dont ut in oven it can burn and ic on board .. heating through hair dyer is safe i think for noobs... thanks

So I baked my G3 in the oven...

Sometimes I do brilliant things, but this takes the cake. My G3 was having charging issues - wasn't charging at all. It looked like one of the connectors on the charging port was broken. So a friend tells me that his brother puts his damaged motherboards in the oven to reflow the solder. So, like a dummy I look around online amazed at all the success stories, take my phone apart, and carefully cook my motherboard for supper.
I did 385F for 8 min, waited 20+ min to cool, wrapped everything except the charge port in foil, all that. So when I put it back together....nothing. Occasionally a blank blue screen appears then goes away.
So, cam I do anything to bring back this phone that was awesome before a lost my head?

and just when I think I've heard of everything...
reflowing is for, in general, gaming systems/boards which no longer use lead based soldering, and have grown older and connections may go bad/brittle.
Your G3 is way new.

shahkam,
reflow-
... "is a process in which a solder paste (a sticky mixture of powdered solder and flux) is used to temporarily attach one or several electrical components to their contact pads, after which the entire assembly is subjected to controlled heat, which melts the solder, permanently connecting the joint. Heating may be accomplished by passing the assembly through a reflow oven or under an infrared lamp or by soldering individual joints with a hot air pencil." wiki or someplace
We (military/DOD) have equip 'reflow'ed (repaired) all the time. Newer boards, including gaming consoles, which no longer use lead based solder, considerably more. Comparatively, older (lead based) boards are much more durable and the connections remain stable/intact much better/longer.
reflow.
WOW
Next time use a microwave
Well it'll make a good coaster for my coffee. Darn expensive mistake there.
Baking th MOBO
My LG G3 died last night. First I got the blue screen, then the looping startup blue screen, then... nothing could not get it to power up at all. I got on some online forums and read about baking the MOBO. Since my phone was bricked and about 18 months old, I figured, what do I have to lose? I didn't think it would work, but I was desperate. I removed the MOBO and baked it in a Pyrex dish at 360 degrees for 10 minutes. Took it our and let it cool, reassembled the phone and it has worked great ever since. It was a very counter-intuitive thing to do, but the whole reflow thing makes sense when you think about it. Still, I'm getting a new phone.
350 for 10 got my G3 going again after the blue screen. Going on a week now : ) Thanks!
Follow up... Died at 3 weeks got a v20
Baking the motherboard on the phone sounds ridiculous but it worked for me. I removed the 12 screws, pulled the board and baked it. Remember the short screw goes next to the lens. Phone is still working after 4 days but I have ordered a newer phone.
So I did not believe a second it could work, but as the blue screen of death happened to me 2 days ago... As I ordered a OnePlus3T, what did I have to loose???
So I baked !!!
And my G3 is back !
Maybe it is only about reconnecting properly the 4 connectors, maybe it's the baking... but hell, it worked !
even thinking of trying that for my sim card issues...
Hi! Um I had vertical lines on my G3 32gb and I put it in the oven for 10 minutes on maybe around 170-180 celsius or maybe a little more than that and after it cooled down I put it back together and it won't power on or charge...it's just black...soooo did I completely kill it or is it fixable...the CPU and memory is getting hot when plugging the phone into the wall socket...Thank You!

You most probably totally melted and killed it.
You should never put a phone/motherboard in an oven.
There was a thread about this here just a few days ago...
From the threads I have read sometimes it works, sometimes you kill it. But from pretty much what everyone has said that has done it, it is a temporary fix. I bought a brand new unlocked D851 motherboard on aliexpress and replaced mine. It cost me $95.00 but to me it was worth it to basically get a new phone. I figure the first board lasted me over 2 years and I paid over $700 for the phone. $95.00 more to last me 2 years or until I decide to get a new phone seemed worth it to me.

It worked for my G2 D802. I was totally surprised...
The problem is that during manipulation I managed to dislocate a tiny Smd capacitor C5004. Does anyone know how to solder it back? It's about half mm width... )
It works- 360 degrees for 10 mins, placed on tin foil on baking sheet, and then let it cool on top of stove for 35 minutes
I backed,
think my toaster wasnt very hiqh quality - might have used incorrect power
anyway, motherboard is dead - make sure your oven temp control is presice! do not go above 160C
Now I am going to bake the hell out of my dead note 4! Only if I get oven somewhere.

it's been a while since you have posted your comment, but did you try to reflow your phone? mine has a problem with the SIM card and i tried every other solution except for this.
not sure if i should try this and risk damaging a phone that could otherwise be used for multimedia purposes.

I HAVE FOUND A SOLUTION FOR THE LG G4 BOOTLOOP ISSUE *Story & Tutorial*

Basically what happened, was on Friday, my phone got stuck in a boot loop. It would get to the "Optimizing Apps" screen and shut off again. Other people may just get to the Verizon screen, or even just the LG screen. I looked it up and found that it was a major issue affecting many people, so I just filed for a warranty and received my new phone today. Well, on Saturday night LinusTechTips, a popular tech YouTube channel(You should really check them out, they are great), released a video on how they fixed a dead Graphics Card and PCI-E SSD by heating them up past the melting point of solder and then testing them. For them, it only worked on the GPU. As I was packing up my seemingly dead phone to ship back to LG TODAY, i decided to give it one more shot. I disassembled the device to the point where I could take out the logic board. I took the logic board and wrapped it in one layer of parchment paper and two layers of tinfoil, shiny side facing in(FYI tinfoil has two sides, shiny and matte). I then placed this package into a barbecue. I turned on the left and middle burners and left the package with my logic board inside on the right side to the grill so it wasn't receiving direct heat. After 10 minutes, I took it out, re-assembled my phone and it booted. I was able to get all of my pictures off of it. This has only been confirmed to work on my phone, but seeing as this SAME issue is affecting thousands of people, It's definitely worth a shot. If you are going to use an oven, PLEASE, make sure it's above 385 degrees Fahrenheit and that you don't plan on using that oven for food ever again, this may release some toxic chemicals etc. I plan on using my grill again, so I just made sure to leave the grill open for 24 hours and I'm going to clean it before I use it next. If you have any questions let me know!
P.S. My LG G4 was the Verizon model.
I highly recommend doing this ONLY if you have no other option. Remember that heating a logic board to high temperatures can release toxic fumes. Don't use an oven you use for food preparation! Toxic fumes can leave residue in the oven and will be re-released upon reheating over many cycles!
Assuming LG's press release regarding the issue is correct and it is really a loose contact, this "fix" could actually work. Of course, only if the loose connection is a soldered connection. Though, it's controversial. You have to remember that the melting point for SMD solder is around ~350°C, or 662°F. So 358°F, or 181°C, is not nearly enough to actually re-solder a loose connection. My guess is that the loose solder point is only expanding due to the heat. There is no real reconnect. It might only be a matter of time until it also breaks. If you could locate the actual loose connection you could really re-solder it and have it fixed permanently.
I've done this on many many devices, including graphics cards, smartphone logic boards, PC mainboards etc. It only works if a soldered connection has a crack small enough that heat expansion is enough to gain reconnection. If there is a loose contact on the PCB or the "crack" in the solder is too big, it does not work. Also, if you really have a dead chip, this trick also won't (always) work.
I read a similar story on reddit. The guy put his main board in the oven, reassembled it, and the phone started working. The last update I read was 3 days later, still working.
I fixed mine temporarily by heating up the emmc chip using solder hot air gun. It seems to be just the emmc chips connection.
Failed again after a fortnight when the phone got too hot. The connection seems to break when the g4 gets hot.
One option to try is to boot the phone inside a freezer. I found that worked too.
Pretty poor quality control on lg's part.
I'm going to try again and see if I can fix permanently.
Worked for me too
I have a LG G4 H815 with serial number starting with 507. It died yesterday night. The bootloop escalated quickly to full death. Even the freezer trick did not work.
I followed the OP instructions. I heated up the grill to ~250 degrees Celsius and cooked the motherboard for 10 minutes.
Magically the phone has been working for a couple of hours since and I have been able to backup files to the external SC card.
I wonder how much more will it work.
Thank you for help OP!!!
Word of advice to other LG G4 users. Backup your phone regularly. Use an external SD card. Set the camera to save images and videos to the SD card. At least at doom day you will have them saved.
Cheers

What is the beginning of your phone's serial number?
Hi bro kindly tell is it worth to install custom rom kernal with root to prevent the cpu to clock high speed so it will not go into bootloop? My is also 2 years old thanks
250 degrees F for 6 minutes and brought the phone back to life. We'll see how long it lasts.
Actually it worked on BOTH G4s I have. I first just went dead and I bought a used one for $100 on eBay and it worked fine until the bootloop showed up.

LG G3 (D855) Blue Screen of Death

Dear community.
A few weeks ago I rooted my LG G3 and installed Fulmics 6.0.
Everything went as planned and worked seemlessly.
Today, while watching YT-videos my device turned off and tried to reeboot. After the first, non-animated LG screen, the blue screen appeared.
Same to say while trying to boot into TWRP recovery. After the blue TeamWin Startscreen, the blue screen shows up again. :crying:
Is there any help left?
Kind regards
Thomas
My friend also happen problem
He asked people to help take
Finally, open the motherboard
Then take heat
That seems to be a common problem LG G3
Welding where welding is not good
PS. I use google translate
hi guys, i had the same problem now for 2 days searching the forums for any sign of hope even ringing lg them selves to for them to tell me the repairs will cost more than the phone
so i new at this point i had nothing to lose.. after playing around for 13 hours with my phone i have got it all up and running at the minute for a full day an not once gone off so i might be the lucky one buts its worth a shot
this is what i did.
disassembled my lg g3 and took out the logic board
took off both heat i/o sheilds from the i/o
with a fine tooth brush and some contact cleaner (ipa 90%) i cleaned the main part of the board and let it dry out half hour
i then applied hot air onto the board both sides and let the contacts reseat them selves and the put phone back together (make sure you out the i/o shields back on)
i then tried resetting my phone with lg flash tools and the correct fireware for my phone
(when you are cleaning your phone there is a little sticker on the chip stating what firmware you phone came with, find this firm where as you know it will work)
anyways it didnt work for some random reason so i tried lg flash tools 2014 (i will link everything below).
so when i found the correctish .kdz file i flash the firmware making sure everything went
and for the first time it went to 100% first time.
played with my phone for a while all seamed ok wasnt the standard firmware what was on when cam out the factory.
so i then tried lg flash tools again with the correct firmware and it worked spot-on and has never played up are missed a beat since....
everything i used:

Just an quick update the phone is still working like a dream. Also upgraded to lasted OS. So this could of been a lucky fix or just a bad section in software.
Sent from my LG-D855 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I actually just got this yesterday, and fixed it. It started blue-screening and rebooting sporadically but quickly got to the point where I'd turn the phone on and it would blue-screen and shut off after two seconds. I could still hold Vol Down and power to get into the STOCK system recovery screen, and by choosing Safe mode (Factory data reset went to blue-screen) it went into TWRP. I tried a whole bunch of different things (and luckily was able to get a backup of the internal storage to my SD card) before doing a full wipe. FULL wipe. I then flashed the stock image via KDZ which is where I sit right now. No blue-screens. I had been on Jasmine 9.1 and Skydragon kernel, I'm thinking maybe a recent update didn't play nicely with either of those, or maybe some other custom firmwares too.
I also got this and somehow i manage to resurrect the phone. I was installing another stock-based ROM (Zoe ROM 3.0 - based on V30N) and after setup my phone got a blue screen. I unplugged the battery, i tried to start it again but only showed LG logo for one second, and after that was dead. I mean, completely dead. No power, no charging, no PC detection, nada!
What I've done:
1. disassembled the phone and pull out the motherboard (G3 is really easy to disassemble, really);
2. open the protective cover near the CPU/Memory (it's a weak metal cover, easy to pull down);
3. i wiped gently with a toothbrush and alcohol all the components (i put a lot of medicinal alcohol);
4. i used a hair drawer (hot) to clean the excess of alcohol and to heat the CPU zone (about 1-2 min);
5. i assembled all back together and i prayed to God (no joke, believe it or not);
6. after that i pressed the power button + vol- (to enter recovery) ... and surprise, it's alive;
7. i restored a anterior software backup, just in case... (now i use Zoe ROM 2.7 based on V30J);
Now it's working for about ~4 hrs and no problem at all... i will edit this if something is happening.
Good look! And pray... sometime it really helps.

This worked for me! Didn't even need to reset the OS. My wife's G3 shut down on her one day. I started trying to fix it, but couldn't get past it showing blue screen, boot looping, and then going dead to the point where it wouldn't even boot to the flash recovery screen. I couldn't even get it to turn on at all until I took the battery out and held the power button down for 20 sec.
Then I read this post, removed the circuit board and shields on both sides, blow dried on hot/low setting for about 7 min each side, and let it cool off for about 10 min, then re-assembled everything. First boot it went right to the PIN lock screen like normal. So far so good it's been running for about 30 min no issues. Thank you!
Glad it's working mate I got my phone to my little one now and still going strong it did have a little TIFF a few weeks ago with not even turning on but left on charge for a day as for some reason the battery drained that much it couldn't even charge so yeah
Yeah just did a drop test and smacked it around a little, so far so good still going...
I have a solution to this problem.
When you disassembly phone and remove protective cover (from processor site) remove little battery from motherboard - near to processor.
Thats all. G3 is back to live (at least mine)
The bsod happened to me as well. After trying everything, flash stock firmware, boot to recovery and wipe data, cache etc and nothing worked. I then disassembled the phone and put the motherboard in the oven at 180degree for 10 minutes. So far so good, it booted up fine and it's working pretty well till now. Flahed v30b version and it's working since 10 hours. Will report back how long it stay alive eheh

Looks like this disassambling things really works cuz i read so many places and heard from friends that it works.
But really strange why it suddenly started this problem on everybody
I solved the problem by putting CPU limit. It is not a good solution while your phone works as half of its potantial but it works. Maybe one day i will bake it too
Here's another proof that the heatgun solution seems to work.
My G3 was randomly crashing from time to time over last month but the bluescreen appeared for the first time today. Since then it didn't make it past the LG logo before it would turn blue and shut itself of. So same problem as described above.
I took it apart and took of the metal "heatspreaders" from the motherboard, then heatgunned it from both sides for like two minutes each (with waving the heatgun around so I wouldn't burn the entire thing ), let it cool down a little and reassembled it.
I then just powered it up normally and it works just fine.
I'll update you in a few days.

Yeah, it works, in most cases. The question is - for how long... You may be lucky, and it could be a permanent fix for you. However, the nature of the issue is a manufacturing defect which can only be fixed for sure by reballing the chip (or by just replacing the whole board). Going a bit deeper into technical details, the chip in question is a BGA type (Ball Grid Array). It means that it doesn't have traditional leads for soldering on the board (the ones that are either sticking out or just located on the sides). Instead, it has soldering pads on the underside, and the soldering is done by putting a pre-arranged set of solder balls (hence the name), and the flux on the pads, and then heating up the assembly until it melts. A flaw in preparation or in the soldering process itself results in a bad contact on some pads which usually manifests itself either after the chip and board heat up under load, or when the board is physically deformed even a tiny bit (hit or dropped), or just after some deterioration/oxidation over time...
Sorry for the nerdy stuff, I am done now... Basically, consider the heatgun trick to be about the same as banging on the side of the old tube TV trying to fix the static on the screen...

LG G3 D855 Screen flickers and fade to darkness

Hi and thank you for checking my thread
I have a problem with my G3 as described in the tittle, I did the Paper trick I saw on YouTube but sadly it didn't work
After a while I found out that placing a piece cut from Credit card under the CPU might work and I did , but one week later I had the same problem, likely I can just click sleep button and it returns to normal
After these many problems I decided to give up on it and sell it, but I need a permanent Fix so I don't get involved in Cheating
Also , does replacing motherboard will fix the issue ?
Does G4 Worth it now ? I know about bootloop problem
Probably is a bad motherboard
When my G3 finally died (digitizer went bad), I just replaced it with a used G4 for $150. That was like 6 months ago. The phone has been phenomenal. I know there is many who say that every G4 will bootloop eventually, but I really don't see how thats possible if you just browse google for the issue. Yeah, a lot of people had the problem, but if everyone did you wouldn't see the G4 still being sold at a ton of outlets, and you would see hundreds of links to the issue. I think there was a large batch of them that were bad... and they got past QC, but the vast majority of them are probably fine.

Replacing the Motherboard will fix the issue ?
Yea, i saw "1 month/year after" Reviews on youtube and no one montion the bootloop issue, people ask them in comments and they reply that the phone works normal with no issues
Thank you for replying dude appreciate it
I was skeptical at first, but by baking the motherboard in the oven did the trick for me. It has been a couple of hours now an no flickering, no black screen and no troubles. And i know i'm asking for Murphy to come and bite my as*, but as a little trick, i'd like to suggest before putting the mobo in the oven to try something: i have an old Akasa X4 cpu cooler which has metal fins which are removable. I took one of those things and cut a square a little bit smaller than the power IC to the right of the SoC and then cut another one the exact same size then stacked the two one on top of each other, making sure to not short any capacitor around the IC and then put the metal shield back, making sure to put pressure on the IC. Then preheated the oven at roughly 180 degrees celsius, then put the motherboard SoC face up into the preheated oven on three balls of aluminium foil, one at the bottom near the micro usb, and the others to balance the motherboard, like a BMW Isetta, and put the timer for 10 minutes. After these nervous 10 minutes, I took out the mobo and let it to cool at room temperature for ~30 minutes. And voila, now it works. I do hope that it is going to last, and i will be very careful with this phone, unlike the previous owner. Seriously, how can you put a freaking button (small one, from a shirt) between the SoC and the mid-frame? Crazy. And that's why i got it for ~8000 JPY (about 70 bucks).

I had a similar problem for about two months. I tried the paper thing over the camera sensor and I felt like it helped some but the problem still continued. The screen would just slowly go dark with vertical lines running through it. All apps would still work in the background while this was happening. I could boot to TWRP and this problem never happened while in TWRP which was odd. Seemed like if it was a screen issues or hardware malfunction it would happen all the time. That's when I decided to just flash back to stock. I was thinking about getting the S8 anyways so what the hell. I flashed to stock 10B and took every single OTA. Took all night but I've been running stock for over a day now and the issue has not replicated itself one time since reverting back to stock. I was on RR Nougat and Fulmics when it happened prior. Has to be a root or Rom issue?

Just wondering if your G3 is still functioning without the issue.
It really feels like a hardware issue but as you pointed out it didn't happen in TWRP... but like many, I encounter the issue when the phone gets a bit warm (>35C), so maybe TWRP and your stock android is not as hot as RR Nougat? Then again, I'm on MM when this happened...
Update: Actually the flicker n fade happened to me in TWRP while I was backing up. The temperature read about 60C.
I had bigger problems with my g3 and they started as follows
Problem 1. camera not being detected and crashing. 2. Reboot once a while which got worse over time. 3. Bluetooth sketchy and WiFi not connecting. 4. Sd card being ejected and mounted constantly. 5. Mobile data stopped working.
Solution: baked it in the oven 10min with cpu side up at 185c removed to cool 4 30min. Problems gone for the meantime.
This morning at work my D852 died with the exact same screen fades to black and would only stay on for at most like 10 seconds and would only come on again after the processor cooled enough. I came across this youtube video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UF1s4RCZAvc
Since I didn't have any copper foil tape, I substituted with Aluminum foil tape and placed the tape in the same places as detailed in the video. (copper works better than aluminum for heat dispersal)
My phone is now back to normal and hasn't shown any issues with the past 5 hours since I applied the fix.
UPDATE: My phone has worked perfectly for several days now until I turned on the GPS from Cell Tower to High Accuracy and it immediately started to die again. Once it cooled down I was able to get to the settings screen to turn off GPS and it went back to functioning like normal
How to fix
I tried the paper trick and it did not work. No need to replace the motherboard or the phone. The issue is just a bad connection between the motherboard to the LCD display.. Probably due to dirt (in my case, I found that quite a few places in my motherboard had corrosion buildup). Here is the fix...
1. Remove battery cover and Unscrew The back plastic from the base of the phone to get to the motherboard.
2. Disconnect all the connectors from the motherboard.
3. Scan the motherboard for anything unusual. (My motherboard had corrosion on several different places).
5. Clean any dirt or corrosion with lint-free cloth. (I didn't have one so I had to use a Q-tip).
*if needed, Dip the cloth in rubbing alcohol to assist in cleaning. make sure that the cloth is JUST BARELY Damp and not dripping, otherwise you will risk water-damaging the phone. If you use rubbing alcohol, make sure that you dry the spot right after you wipe it.
6. Once you have cleaned the motherboard, check the base of the phone and clean any dirt from here also.
7. Replace the motherboard, re-connect the connections, screw on the back, and put the battery cover back on.
Viola! Mine has been working like new for 4 days so far with no issues...

So a permanent fix is a new motherboard or a new screen?

Want to help me resuscitate a drowned oneplus 3?

I took my oneplus 3 for a brief swim. I blame new fatherhood. It inhaled a lot of water. I turned it off, dried it, and put it in rice for a couple days. Soon after turning it off, it started getting hot. I'm guessing something important is dead. I'd like to go through the process of fixing it. I have to replace the rear camera which stopped focusing anyway.
Here's where I'm at now.
1. The battery charges.
2. The screen works.
3. It boots up in developer mode or whatever the volume button down + power is.
4. Phone won't boot into OS.
My plan from this point forward:
1. Open up phone and inspect.
2. Clean components.
3. Test with pc and go through unbrick guide.
4. Order and replace broken parts.
Questions:
1. Is there a diagnostic I could run to figure out what is broken?
2. If I'm replacing something major, would it be fairly straightforward and worth the effort to replace the internal components with 3T components?
3. Anything else I should keep in mind or any thoughts on what is likely wrong with the phone?
I guess by letting it dry and then turn it on again you killed something in your phone.
Water has always a bit salt and minerals in it and once the phone these minerals are still left and can cause various short circuits.
I know its too late now, but what you should have done is turning the phone down after the accident and then wash it out with destilled water to wash out the minerals and after that let it dry.
For example blackboxes of crashed planes are left in a box with salty water and then it gets replaced more and more with destilled water.
I'd recommend you to visit a phone fixing shop. Finding the problem by yourself will be pretty tricky without the right tools.

Thanks. That makes sense. My suspicion is still that the damage occurred prior to turning the phone off, as the off phone kept heating up as if something was causing a massive battery drain. This will be helpful next time. Ugh, next time. There better not be a next time.
As I've yet to start taking the phone apart, I'm still pretty determined to troubleshoot it myself as much as I can. So any other suggestions people have would be appreciated. I've been quite unimpressed with the techs around here...
