ARCore Stickers (Augmented reality) - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Has anyone figured out how to enable these yet? The review units all seem to be using it but they say it is scheduled to be unlocked for the public at a later date.

I haven't been able to find it either. I'm guessing it'll be added at a later date like you said.

Over a month and still not available though was one of the big selling points during the unveiling and reviews. Thought for sure we'd see it with the enabling of the Camera HAL in the 8.1 DP2

My Pixel 2 XL shipped with September security update...has anyone received October's?

I don't have it either, and it won't play music in the car. It connects and phone calls seem to work (I just dialed a number and hung up, not sure how call quality would be), but the car doesn't find a compatible media device. I read the security update might fix it??

8.1 DP will get you October patch. Sacrifice stability for security if you want. Kidding a little, I was wondering where the heck the security update was before I went to the 8.1. Possibly they're waiting to package all the software improvements together and since people keep complaining about more things, they keep adding more things.
Not here!
It's only been released with 8.1 beta
My first Pixel/Nexus back since I had the Galaxy Nexus, and one of the main decision points was rapid updates, including security ones. Here it is, Nov 3, and still on September. I could swear Google was on a regular monthly cadence of security updates for the Pixel 1 and Nexuses (Nexi?)
lets hope for nov 6 patch.. hopefully addressing most concerns
Nov 7 and I'm still only on September patch.

It takes time for the otas to roll out. You can't expect thousands of people in all areas of the world on different carriers, to receive the patch at the exact same second.
Hoping these come soon. Don't like being out of date by so far at this point. Not sure why I still am only on September.

This would be a good excuse but as of a couple months ago supposedly the update button was supposed to actually work. I know I hit the stupid thing 20 or 30 times since seeing the update dropped and still haven't gotten the update.
Really. Google Play Store can update an app all across the world in a few hours? OTAs don't happen since carriers control updates. This should not be. Google needs to reclaim their power before Android goes to the dark side of fragmentation. I have a bad feeling about this.
There are many reports about the display changes for the Pixel 2 XL in the released November security update, but neither the OTA or images are posted on Google's site yet.

night sight

So I got my pixel today. When I go to camera settings I don't see an option for a night sight. I have the latest android update. Anyone knows what's going on?
its not out yet.
Hm weird that they advertise it then don't actually ship it with the phone. Thanks anyways!
A version of it has been ported. Just do a quick Google search and download the GCAM APK with night sight enabled.

Actually you're wrong. Google does NOT and did NOT advertise Night Shot. Go to the Pixel 3 product page, there is NO Night Shot anywhere. https://store.google.com/product/pixel_3
What Google did was they ANNOUNCED Night Shot at the Pixel 3 event and said that it is coming LATER.

yup. i stand corrected
As previously mentioned, you can download a version of the camera that has it enabled and it doesn't overwrite the existing camera, so you get the best of both. Although a lot of sites say night sight has been released to phones yesterday or the day before, but I can't find it in the official camera app.

Arguably, the release event could be viewed as advertisement. Although saying it will come out at a later date is a cop out because that could be two years from now haha.

New Shield TV Version for 2019?

I've read a few articles (one of which was from xda back in March or April) stating that there are rumors of a new Shield TV in the works. Other articles stated that they were excpecting NVidia to possibly make an announcement in May. I know rumors are rumors, but curious to know if there are any other leaks now that we're into June?
Thanks
yea it said they are on a four year schedule. but no other info has been given

I would hate to buy one now, then a new version gets release in a month or two.

I bought 2017 model today. I prepare for repentance
Even though NVidia has a trade-up program, they only give you $20. Not near enough to compensate the original cost!
I came across this and other articles like it yesterday:
androidpolice.com/2019/06/15/new-nvidia-shield-tv-running-android-9-pie-pops-up-in-play-console-device-catalog/
Apparently, a new Shield TV is coming! Not much is know except it will feature a different processor and Android Pie.
I actually just purchased my Shield the other day. I have it loaded with emulators, DirecTV Now, and I am absolutely loving it! I hate that a new version is on the horizon when I just bought this beast, but that's the name of the game I suppose.
Considering a number of new bugs introduced and not fixing existing in new Pie update, I am skeptical regarding a next Shield. Nvidia should partner a good software vendor to make the Shield valuable.

Pretty sure that Nvidia has supported the shield for far longer than anyone expected. Bugs and all, it's still the best thing you can hook up to your TV outside of a HTPC.
Note: I own two Nvidia Shield TV's (both the 2015 16gb versions) and I've owned one of them since the original launch date of may 2015.

Google Assistant 2.0

Just curious if anyone has found a way to bring this to older Pixel phones yet. This is the one feature i'm really looking forward to.
It seems by virtue of the fact there are no replies, that this is either an ignored post, or there are no answers as of yet.
Reported from Slash Gear:
"It’s still unknown whether older Pixel phones will get the same treatment. The Pixel 2 is still within the supported period so, unless Google considers it to be blocked by older hardware, the compact Google Assistant should still be able to make its way to it"

I already have it in my Pixel 2 XL. I am a level 7 local guide though with early access to upcoming features. So yes, this will definitely hit the Pixel 2 (XL) as well!
@addemer - that's awesome news! How are you finding it?

How do you know you have it? I thought i read that GAssistant wont have the cool new UI like on the Pixel 4.
Im also a level 7 local guide and GAssistant beta tester. But i dont think i have it.
I do not have the Pixel 4 UI but the new compact view that the article above mentions.
That wasn't what I was referring to. I was looking for the new faster assistant with continued conversation. I heard others have gotten it to work on a rooted phone by changing the build.prop to a pixel 4.

I'm in Aus...how many hours til we expect to see something come through?
I've giving my 6 Pro a chance to improve after this update but if it doesn't will seriously consider returning (worse 5G reception, wifi and bluetooth than my Oppo Find X2 Pro).
Well, the sooner the better... countdown on for Monday!

Less than 24 hours from now. You might have to manually download it and apply the OTA yourself to get it that fast, but we'll see. No idea if or how much of a delay it would be before you would actually get it over the air.

I've found that it's usually about 10am Pacific Time (California).
Edit: Reddit seems to think that it's more around noon PT. Now that I think about it, that sounds about right. I seem to get the update during a busier time at work rendering my device somewhat temporarily neutered until it's done updating.

Maybe Samsung refused to sell it for Google's use in the Pixel. Maybe they would've charged too much and Google would've had to charge hundreds of dollars more. I have long suspected that Samsung has certain stipulations about Google's devices so that they're not too competitive except where it counts (to me), the software. We'll probably never know why.

probably supply issues , its also an external modem
chip shortage is real also the tensor is newer than the exynos used in the s20 ultra but also customised for google
the gpu is faster but obviously some things lacking and i dont think samsung would have been able to supply their current flagchips components alongside the google launch which had stock issues of its own
that said the price range for this phone is insanely low compared to others so some cut corners are fine
for me i dont even get to enjoy 5G in 90% of the situations im in due to slow rollout
Just checked, the update has not posted yet. It is due today as the 1st Monday of the month, but is occasionally a few days late.
Remember, if you are rooted, DO NOT take the OTA.
There is no 2nd gen modem unless Samsung wants to surprise everyone.
All rumors point to an on-die modem, likely a 5123c instead of anything new.
I'm dieing for this updateeeeee lol, well my phone's dieing for it this update should determin if things are fixable or not

Well, according to the man above, the update usually drops at 10 AM PST. That's still 15 minutes away.
