Got my XL from verizon today. The phone seems pretty solid so far except for the screen. I can pull the same pictures on my old pixel and the new one and compare side by side. Its not even close to being as good as the old pixel...The colors are all washed out with no depth. None of the color settings seem to change that. Im curious if anyone else is seeing this same thing or has any fixes
I haven't got it yet, but judging from the 3 2 XLs I saw in different Verizon stores the screen does indeed suck. Terrible viewing angles and just underwhelming looking at it straight on. Nothing to do with sRGB calibration BTW. I've had lots of devices on sRGB and there were not as dull/weird/damped as this.
Yeah unfortunately the colors on this thing are pretty bad. The other issue is the depth of the screen...there is none. Everything looks flat, like its painted on the screen. I played with it all night and couldn't get it any better. Im back on my old pixel already, will be sending this back. Oh well, i had high hopes for this phone but its definitely a no go
so i am not a hardware guy and was curious are these issues that software can address or it is what it is by design?
thanks
have you tried enabling the "vivid colors" setting
Sorry man, I was so hyped for this phone as well. Now we get this display issue, unfortunately had to cancel my order yesterday because of it.

This may seem obvious, but on the 1st gen Pixel, there is a Developer Option to use sRGB, on or off. "Off" results in more saturation for colors. Is this setting not present on the Pixel 2 XL?

I seem to remember sRGB used to be in the developer options, is there a way to turn it off in the developer options now?
sRGB is the default on the Pixel 2... Don't know why people are complaining about it... Just wait for custom kernels so we can make color adjustments. This is nothing new.

The developer options on the Pixel 2 XL do not have the option like the original Pixels did to toggle sRGB on or off. It actually shows up when searching the phone, so it's likely in there somewhere behind the scenes, but it's not available to users out of the box in Developer Options or elsewhere in the settings. The only option available is the vivid toggle in the display settings, but it does very little to punch up the colors.

A number of articles and blogs I read said Google is looking to enable to option to toggle the sRGB settings.
We designed the Pixel display to have a more natural and accurate rendition of colors this year but we know some people prefer more vivid colors so we’ve added an option to boost colors by 10% for a more saturated display. We’re always looking at people’s responses to Pixel and we will look at adding more color options through a software update if we see a lot of feedback.

... don't know about that. It may just take a month or so to wander North. It depends upon Rogers feeling they need to address some of these issues as well.
I guess for the moment, yes, but they did say "all Lumia 900 users" for near future updates.
Wow this blows...
Can someone with the new update tell me if the "minor additional fixes" might include the touch screen lag issue?

I'm not doing the update yet. I'm going to wait until it is dark. What I'm thinking is Nokia's "fix" may just be removing the lowest dimming settings. If that is the case then those of use with working phones will actually have our working devices "crippled." Gonna see if I can video tape the difference... assuming there is one. Trying to understand the OLED screens.
Can the Rogers users flash the AT&T firmware or would the phone become locked to AT&T or Locked to Rogers again?

I had the purple hue setting and can confirm that the lowest brightness setting is still available. they did not take it away. On the contrary, it seems like they made the automatic 'low' brightness setting even lower than the 'low' manual setting.
I am not sure if this was the case prior to the update but what i had seen earlier, at least in a Samsung focus was was when you set brightness to 'Low' manually, and then changed it to automatic brightness, the lowest automatic brightness was equivalent. Now, the lowest automatic brightness is lower than the 'low' in manual.
Can anyone confirm this with their non-update lumia?

I did not mean that they "took it away." I meant are the number of lumens still the same.

That is the way it was prior to the update. I'm just wondering if both low settings are putting out the same absolute number of lumens as the pre-fix settings.
I don't know that you can go back and forth with ROMS. I removed the Nokia flashing software from my computer and I don't want to hassle with it. So I am going to test and then do the update and see if there is a difference. I just need an objective way of being able to see a difference... if one exists.
Posted on a different forum. This is how the iOS works and looks like WP7 is supposed to as well.
Autobrightness is working, but it does look like it works differently than it did in the past.
Before, if you had auto brightness on and the brightness (level) set to low, the screen would go from the lowest brightness to the highest brightness depending on the ambient light. As long as auto brightness was on, it did not matter what the brightness setting was. The screen would adjust from the dimmest to brightest.
Now, it appears that the brightness setting affects the bias of automatic brightness. For example, if I have auto brightness on and the brightness is set to low, the screen will not get bright enough to read in the direct sun.
I now have auto brightness on, and I have the brightness level set to high. All seems well.
Based on reading some user guides for WPs, I think this is the way it was supposed to work all along. So, it looks like auto brightness not only works; it works as it should.

I'm wondering the same thing. I haven't seen it come back yet, but sometimes, it was sporadic.
Also, I didn't have the purple hue issue, but I don't notice any difference on automatic brightness from before. Might be due to me not previously having the issue, not sure.

I still have my Focus, and yes, it's buttery smooth. But, I'd be happy to trade you for your Lumia...
I'm just generally upset about my whole experience.
First, I was going to get the 900 when the $100.00 software-bug credit was there, but Rogers came back and said the $100.00 nokia rebate was only for new customers, not existing. Apparently existing customers had to pay not only full pop, but we weren't even eligible for the "month to month" price, we had to pay a higher cost for an "existing customer full buyout".
Then I accidentally break my focus, and get the 900. Returned it over 5 times, all had the purple issue.
The lag issue sucks, the battery issue sucks. I've accidentally let the phone completely discharge twice, and the last time I almost wasn't able to get it back (took over an hour to get it to power up).
Don't get me wrong, the phone is slick, beautiful design, specs are nice, etc... But I'm just getting SOOOO agitated at the Rogers/Nokia combo of issues.
Edit: I'm just ornery and having a bad day. Just extremely choked that Canadians didn't get the update as well... I tweeted Rogers, and they said they have nothing to do with it, they said it's all in Nokia's ballpark and they have nothing to do with the update process.
Had anyone found out how to disable the sharpening effect on the phone?

No, it is NOT because it is a 2K screen at all. This is some LG idea to *make* the screen look sharper with a QHD display.
In one of the other threads, someone even posted the response from LG Customer Service where they even explicitly said it is a LG feature built into the phone/software and will not be disabled in any future updates, for now.
It might even be baked into LG's kernel perhaps.

If the saturation bothers you go into developer options and enable "SRGB Color".
Obviously if it is different from another Pixel that is a different story, though.

Yeah, her screen and mine look completely different. Also I have a lot of speaker popping and stuff so I'll probably just return it.
My screen has issues as well. Bottom half looks pink on white screen and top half looks white. It's not horrible but just enough to make me mad. Paying so much for a phone out right. I want a perfect one. Considering doing a replacement but worried about how long I'll have to wait for a new one.
May have to pull the S7 edge back out for a while longer.

Usually, I don't really like topics like this.... But now I need your opinions, guys!
Accidentally smashed my op3 and now I need a new toy.
Already watched a massive amount of videos on YouTube about the razer phone. Love the style, the shape.
However, I'm still can't decide.
Razer or OP5T?
I'm waiting for your thoughts, opinions, etc.
Thanks in advance.
i had the razer phone i sent it back less than a week, dont get me wrong love the retro metallic build and speakers. but the software seems unfinished and non optimised. the screen as fluid as it is @ 120hz just cannot compare to the OP5T in vibrancy and the screen on the RP is just shockingly too dim (even the Nokia phones have brighter LCD Screens). the op5t just feels more polished and its software more snappy. I really REALLY REALLYYYYYYY wanted to like the Razer Phone, but OP5T just seems to me a much better overall package having used both. This is totes subjective of course ...
Gave away my s8 plus and got the Razer. Love it exept for the camera. Se what they will to when oreo hits. But If I where you i would go with 5T.

Yepp and still isn't any good in my opinion, sadly.
I've got both infront of me currently, struggling to decide.
Unfortunately the 5T is giving me a bit of trouble recently.
The others are right, the RP screen is absolutely darker than others, roughly 60% of the 5T brightness and colours can seem a little washed out due to AMOLED vs LCD.
Battery life isn't anything to shout about either really and don't get me started on the camera! jeez.
Lastly, and this might come as a shock, the 5T puts out more decibels than the razer phone, the last update really undermined the volume and now my 5T has about 15% more volume, not clearer of course, but yeh.
All that being said, the Razer phone is built well, and the 120hz screen is nice! I'm trying to justify the brightness by the fact that Razer are wanting to reduce burn in and prolong the life expectancy of the phone, I guess it's not too bad really.
I'm gonna keep using the razer and sell the one I like the least after a week. Don't get me started on the camera or should I say "potato".
The one thing I don't like about the display is that it is "sunken". Nowadays most displays the glass and the picture are together, like you're literally touching the pictures. But on the Razer, you can tell that the picture is below the glass, which is weird as I haven't seen that in phones in the past 3 to 4 years at least. Not sure if I explained that correctly, but that's a con to me. I think mkhbd mentioned this in the preview video
I'm thinking about buy the phone to replace my LG V10 battery life pretty much bad on it and LG pressing trying me to buy a battery for it but they not selling it them from the website

LCD screens don't burn in. That's pretty much an AMOLED trait. The low brightness is a consequence of the 120hz technology.
after all the issues i've had with the Razer from the moment it went live to buy and now loosing a SE for a standard edition (currently using a wileyfox while the RMA process is happening) I considering selling mine on to get a different phone too.
The OP5T was on my radar as a replacement but if i'm honest I don't trust the company anymore, after the OP5 (which I had before the Razer) and it's hardware issues and OP halting the manufacturing of it so quickly so no one could buy anymore screamed of a new one with the hardware issues fixed and on top of that then there's the personal info they were taking it was the final straw and I sold the OP, of course I cuold have flashed a custom ROM onto it but i'm kinda done with that whole thing these days myself.
if you're set on the two devices it's a hard call. if you don't mind the OP personal info thing and never got burnt from them before (grant that little bit there is completely personal to me) then go for the OP5T, it'll have fantastic custom ROM support too if that's something you want.
my personal other option was the Essential Phone which tbh I think i'll get instead.

You're right the development portion of the device is lacking on here but the company do bi weekly ask me anything on the subreddit so they're very vocal. If I'm honest the lack of support imo is because of the A/B partition (something the razer has) and the lack of sales due to it costing so much on release. Now it's went down and essential are implementing project treble it might get better via custom ROMs
But again that's not very important to me anymore.

No problem. I think we can all agree that the Razer's screen is inferior to the 5T's screen in every way except the refresh rate.

I couldn't agree more. Yet every time I go into a store and play with one of the new iPads, I nearly pull the trigger for that 120hz display. I think if it was at least brighter, there would be no hesitation.
No way I can view 400 nits outside in a Texas summer, though.

I know a lot of people have been makign a big fuzz about the blue shift, but I can live it with it on my device, I would say the iphone's display is not much worse on that regard, but what about the dark colors the display shows? It's ridiculous , skin tones look so dark, like people spend way too much time on the tanning salon and some colors.... I compared the pixel 2 xl with the pixel 2 and what looks burgundy on the pixel 2 looks BROWN on the pixel 2 xl , apparently this is happening because google went overboard with the gamma, is this true? Any chance of google fixing this?

Do what I did, if you don't like it change it. Flash yourself a custom kernel and play with the advanced color settings.

I'm not going to lose my warranty by flashing the device ... I also like getting regular updates, so I don't root my phone

Then it looks like you have to make do with one of the presets, saturated, natural, or boosted.

The benefit of owning a Pixel is that google doesn't care if you unlock and flash a new ROM.
If you brick it, 99% of the time you can fix it without sending it to Google because they provide ALL of the software required to go back to stock anytime you like.

The benefit of owning a pixel for me , it's having it work out of the box, kinda like an iphone , I got a pixel because I refuse to flash my device / debloat it etc like I had to do with samsung devices ...
That too, stock android is definitely a wonderful experience, no fighting with built in apps and bloat, unnecessary accounts for features you don't want etc.
This is my 4th from Google, 3 in the Nexus, and first for Pixel. Next closest experience was from the MotoZ which I did quite like, and the Mods, nearly stock experience. I'd still have it if the usb port hadn't have died 3 weeks out of warranty lol
Did you try disabling automatic brightness ? On my device, if I enable automatic brightness, the screen looks like there is a dark filter on it
What you're seeing is probably the black crush issue. There is an app that somewhat mitigates that called Screen Balance. Here is a vid on it from Brandon @ This is Tech Today.
