I'm not going to lie.. I'm nervous about buying this phone. I've been a slider user forever and love my old trust worthy Galaxy S running Cyanogenmod's Jellybean port. It really does everything I want.
But I've been thinking about buying a tablet lately and maybe going the Note II route is a better option for me.
If you own one of these phones and have been using it for a couple of weeks and feel like sharing, what do you see as the pro's and con's of this phone?
Con 1 for me - no keyboard.
I love mine - I do a ton of typing and use numbers and characters all the time - switching with a touch screen keyboard to type something like k3yb0ard takes me 2 or 3 times longer using a screen then it does with my keyboard (I've timed it using everything from the stock keyboard to swype)
Pro's - pretty much everything hardware related but the lack of keyboard.
How stable is root on this phone? Everything running nicely? Overclocking? Good ROM and Kernel support? Beats audio? Voltage Control (or other overclocking apps)? All the usual phone root/modding goodies.
Is there a good portable keyboad that works with this phone? (bluetooth, small enough to carry in a pocket also, good battery life) That may be a solution when I'm doing a lot of emails or typing a lot of mixed format msgs.
Anyway, thanks for your answers.
The keyboard thing can be an issue. I know it was for me when I went from a HTC Touch Pro 2 to the EVO 3D. However, after a while I got used to it and it is second nature now. What's nice is the Note 2 takes it a step further. You can use the sPen to HANDWRITE your message instead of using the touch keyboard. It will translate your handwriting to text. I am just starting to get a handle on using the sPen to it's fullest. The new multi-window option is nice too(have a split screen with 2 app running at the same time).
The root on this is solid. It's an easy step by step process, with prebuilt programs that do all the work. The only real difference here is the Samsung counter that counts how many times you have loaded a custom ROM. Anything past 0 will prevent warranty work. BUT there is a program that can reset it and also the original stock tars are out there.
ROM development is lacking a bit right now because it is new. However, I am already seeing an increase in custom ROMs in just the last week or so. So it will get going. It may not get to the level of say the S3 but I think it will be good.
Hope this helps.
The screen is so large that typing on a virtual keyboard is much easier than it used to be.
I had a physical QWERTY fascination starting with the G1 and ending most recently with the MT4G Slide. I have to say that I don't have any moments where I long for a hardware keyboard with this device.
The voice input of Jelly Bean is amazing as well. If you are in a service area or wifi area, it works VERY nicely.
I also recently purchased a Logitech BT keyboard that allows me to use the Note II like a touchscreen netbook. Samsung's Smart Dock will most likely allow a keyboard, mouse, spare USB port and HDMI for only $100, so I consider that to be an option for some.
Even the smallish Samsung swypable keyboard that pops up in Multiview types quite well.
I don't think you will be disappointed with the input options that this device will allow you. Plus, the flatness in your pocket is something that you won't ever get in a slider. This giant phone actually feels better in my pocket than my 3.6" MT4GS did. I even have moments where I need to check if the phone is there. (Side note: I'm an adult and I wear the proper size pants at the proper waist level, sagging's for kids)
I understand where you are coming from.. I had a slider phone myself a few years ago and missed the physical keyboard.. I had an epic 4G touch previously and the screen was cramped for me since I have big hands.. But typing on the note 2 is great due to the large screen and I use swift key and you can increase the keyboard size.(also trying in portrait mode =AWSOME, so much more room lol) . Plus the haptic feed back when pressing keys makes it feel more like a physical keyboard
As far as root its way beyond solid... The customer kernel runs nice.. You can over clock to 1.8..I haven't yet since the phone is so smooth out the box.. I might over clock one day.. The unlimited multi windows is a bonus.. It would really suck to limit multi windows to only a few apps.. The audio mods are nice.. Very loud and nice bass
A really great start to a new device.. Can't wait to see what's to come over time

I too had keyboard concerns but got over it with the help of SwiftKey. I am a big corporate email user and couldn't imagine being productive without the keyboard. Someone in this forum said go with SwiftKey and you'll never look back. I must also add that the stock N2 isn't bad

Thanks for all the posts.. I drove myself to the sprint store today so I could play with the phone a bit in person and I'm glad I did.
We might be important when it comes to the election drama, but Ohio won't have LTE until late next year.
Made my decision easy.. no way - no how.
We have 4G wimax here and it's plenty fast.. I'm not downgrading to 3G just to upgrade the rest of my phone. (plus they charge you for 4G LTE anyway - even though we don't offer it.. just in case you go to a area with it)
Anyway, thanks for all the replies. By the time we get 4G LTE here I'll be posting about the Note 4 I think.
Yea, if you are solidly in a Wimax area and use it all the time, unless you can't live without the features of the phone, stay with the wimax phone till LTE comes around.
Where I'm at, the only place I had Wimax was when I was outside for lunch at work. Indoors, I can hardly get a signal for a phone call(this applies to ALL the carriers, as our building really screws with the signal.
I Still think tho that with the new cash infusion/purchase by Softbank, you will see Sprint accelerate it's LTE buildout quite a bit.
Bro there's days I miss my Sidekick Lx

So I've been a long time samsung fan since the first galaxy s phone, since I've had the s2, s3, note 2,note 3, and currently the note 4.
My job gave me an iphone 5s and I find myself doing more and more with that over my personal phone (the note 4)
I used to love customizing, rooting and installing roms. But so far that isn't possible with this phone.
These days all I do with my phone is browse the web, watch videos and text.
I'm so tempted to sell my note 4 and grab an iphone 6 (the 4.7") for the size of it. I've been getting tired of using a belt holster for my phone.
I'm a tech person and work in IT, I feel like I'll regret switching but I'm so tempted to do so anyway.
Anyone want to talk me off the cliff and remind me what I'll be missing?

Very easy, my GF (super Apple believer, always had Macs and iPhones) got an iPhone 6 of course and she can't regret it more. She's even been considering getting an android phone! Which is absolutely crazy for her.
Bottom line, you'll regret it. Sounds like you are an android veteran so I don't need to list here why it's infinitely better than iOS, even on a non-rooted phone.
Heck, if you can't live without root get a different Android phone! Or a rootable Note 4! There's plenty to choose from, don't fall far Apple's fake charm, besides the company now is at its lowest point ever.
Again, you'll regret it for sure!
oh, how I love the "talk me out of switching to an iphone" threads [/sarcasm]
If you're going to switch, just do it. You dont need anyone to talk you into or out of it. You can make your own decisions.
The IPhone 6 will be so boring for you! Just a stupid app drawer with barely any customization available. Unless you use Mac for everything else I can't imagine why you would want to be stuck in that ecosystem. Have you tried just carrying your phone naked in your pocket or use a pouch case? I use a leather wallet case and it fits my front pocket perfectly and I don't even need to carry a wallet anymore. You will also miss the screen, I promise you. I watched a 4k video in YouTube right next to my buddies iPhone 6 and it was no contest. The only other reason i can think of to switch is the better slow motion video, but that's literally it! Don't do it buddy, stay on the light side!
I had an iPhone, first one was the 5. As soon as I started using it I thought, wow, I get it! I could see why so many people like them. After a few months though, I started getting bored and frustrated by little limitations, mainly the lack of user adjustable settings both system wide and per app. So, I switched back to Android. I can't talk you out of an iPhone, because it's a great device, just not for me. The only way you can know if it's right for you is if you try it. Personally, it's my opinion that HTC makes the best phone you can buy.
If you're looking for a smaller phone, I'd look into the lg g3 or the xperia z3 compact. Both are great phones that I'd honestly pick up over the iphone 6.
Just do it traitor. Who needs to convince you. You are your own person. Jeez

Dude im 19 but turning 20 on the 20th of this month and have been with android since after my first phone the iPhone 3G. Since then -> HTC One X -> LG G Flex -> SGN4 all on AT&T. Everyone else in my family is using iphones from iPhone 5C's to iPhones 6's. I'm the odd guy out but I'm the guy who is like you. I root my phones when I can and I compile android roms for them as well when I can. I brought aokp 4.4.2 for the HOXL for example the first one to do that even beat official aokp upon release. But even without root Android has loads more too offer than iTunes app store especially if your a developer. Also one reason thats major to stick with the Galaxy Note 4 is for the Gear VR. Freaking oculus rift portable basically and vr gaming and cinema. Also its Quad HD 551 something DPI display. <- AnTuTu says it has 641 or something DPI I think specs are wrong from what is mentioned. I think AnTuTu is right. Also Galaxy Note 4 is using Gorilla Glass 4 . Also microSD card slot = expand storage up to 128 GB totaling to 160 GB's. Using SD card storage for movies music , utorrent (tv series etc.) Move app data to sdcard to increase storage and when we get root move entire apps to sd cards swap apps etc. You can also have camera save pictures and videos to ext sd card. We get android lollipop soon either end of this month most likely January. Also Note 4 is awarded with best color recreation read it multiple websites blogs etc. A stylus and optical image stabilization 4k video recording at 60 FPS! in UHD which I have it auto save to micro sd card then transfer vids and pics to pc. I have over 300 apps on my Note 4 and 4 HD movies and 800 songs downloaded from spotify. Several multi gb games. Because i transfer app data to sd card that im fine with them not working temporarily while sdcard it out and in my pc. Apps are back after the fact. When root does come out it will be the best phone ever #Note that it already isn;t! Swappable battery 3220 mah fast charge is legit! If you want to root now really bad get a tablet I recommend the nexus 9. >.< And check out the thread root progress note 4 att and someone is working on root for AT&T note 4 and seems close, just takes time and patience and we will have root and then customization and the best hardware and software.
Edit:: sorry for the typos typed in 50 seconds. busy. saw this had 2 respond
If you like iOS just switch. You've used Android before so you should be aware what you're leaving behind, so there shouldn't be a need for anyone to convince you to stay with Android.
My GF has been an iphone user since the first iphone, all the way up to the 5c. She had major problems with her last iPhone (5c) and she still planned on uograding to the 6+. I talked her into getting a Note 4, and she couldn't be happier. She had played with her friends android phone a couple years ago, a cheap entry level htc, and that left a bad taste in her mouth. She thought that was the experience involved with all android phones. Now that she has a flagship android device, she's all android and not looking back to ios.
Just switch, iPhones are great, easy to use and smooth ui I still love iPhones even though I'm on a note 4 and my wife is on yhr galaxy s5, the s5 is the perfect size phone, I'm starting to regret my note, too bulky and no root... I will really regret it if there is never going to be a root...
or have them both, that's why I carry both of my note 4 and an ipodtouch 5th gen with me all the time, same ios function, updated ios, with facetime, I just use mobile hotspot tethering on my note 4 to supply net to my ipod though whenever I need it
People bash the iPhone but I had a 6 Plus and a 6 and they are wonderful phones. Yeah its not customizable and blah blah blah but regardless they are excellent device and the kind of set it and forget it device. You get updates quickly and you don't have it wait around for an update to hit your device. Apps are optimized way better for ios. It just depends on what your needs are. I switched back to the Note 4 because expandable memory is a big thing for me and the certain features. There is nothing more smooth than an ios device so dont let people sway you into thinking the iPhone is a bad device. Your always going to get that answer on xda.
Remember that if you want the better resolution screen you need the 6plus which has the true 1080p screen. The 6plus also has an estimated battery life of about 24 hours tall time 16 stand by time, the screen resolution is 1920x1080 at 401ppi and it's there retina display so there's that,
the note 4 has 23 hours talk and 14 hours standby, it has a 2560x1440 resolution screen with 515ppi,
both have finger print recognition both have NFC with a mobile wallet, depending on where you live mobile wallet might not even matter yet, both are large thin phones.
The iPhone 6plus 16gig is 300$ on contract with att, the note 4 32gig is 300$ as well.
I sell these phones all day, the iPhone 6 is a hell of a lot more popular than the 6plus, the note 4 gets some love but with Samsung not really marketing as hard as apple it's a slow sell, both are amazing phones but I prefer the "freedom" of my note 4, keep in mind I phones are all jailbreak able at this moment where as we have nothing but stock , this is not to speculate what we MAY have in the future. This is a here and now comparison of the facts for each phone, not speculation or opinion. That is why processor and memory are not brought up, in real world use it depends on what you do to really know if one is better than the other...
So there's your reasoning, go ahead and pick

Chromecast, Gear vr, sd cards, more options for 3rd party accessories, ir blaster, Samsung phones are easier to fix. More apps. S-pen, better multi tasking features. 2k display, better hardware. Idk Last Iphone I had was a 3g. I'm not sure how much they've improved the os.
Nahh i have an iPhone 5s and it's solid but I don't see myself being able to handle it as my daily phone regardless of screen size. I just use it as an ipod or if my battery runs out on my note 4 i can just switch very temporarily
The only thing I have to say about switching over to any other device other then the note series is "S-pen". If you use it a lot, trust me you will miss it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA Free mobile app
True I had the OnePlus One and I did miss the S-pen. I also missed the Super Amoled screen. As well as the ir blaster. Note 4 is sexy. People are always checking mine out.
Just go iPhone you will love it.

So ive had a lot of questions from friends and family about my S7 Active; lots of rumors and false info too. Ask me anything.
UPDATE - Tried old AT&T 'phone' APN settings that worked with my S4 for tethering, they do not work on S7 Active, even with tethering provisioning disabled.
The camera is excellent, has approximately 11-11.5 stops of dynamic range (in RAW, obviously), and the OIS is fantastic. Very sharp (again in RAW) optics as well; about up there with my ancient Nikon D300 with the excellent 18-200VR lens attached in terms of sharpness, BARELY less dynamic range, and the OIS works just as well as the Nikon VR lenses i own; highly impressed actually. VERY good low light, very low noise and no discernable noise pattern. I have not shot anything in JPEG; I usually drag a BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera with a Panasonic Lumix OIS 12-35 f2.8 lens around as well as my Nikon D300 with assorted stabilized zooms and prime optics as well, as i shoot and film everything in RAW (i filmed and shot ads, corp videos, music videos, etc professionally for several years). The S7 Active does NOT shoot RAW video, but one might be able to downsample 4k footage to a decent bitrate 1080p with very good results and much higher bitrates to play with. Dynamic range is limited in JPEG from what ive seen, although HDR more works pretty decent for a cell phone, in both video and photo modes. OIS is ALWAYS on, and AF tracking works pretty good; about the same as 3D Tracking on the Nikon D300, just a hair slower. AF is fast and accurate, nowhere near DSLR's, but WAY faster than most phones, and WAY faster and more accurate than 'Focus' push on the Blackmagic Pocket cam, but thats to be expected from a camera you usually rig up and manually pull focus on anyways.
Tethering is natively accessible in the stock ROM, i have an (ancient) grandfathered unlimited data plan through AT&T, and i have full access to APN information and settings, and am wondering if tethering may be enabled natively with the stock ROM. I have disabled all bloatware (via paid app), tweaked and tested it out since launch day; it really does easily last about 30 hours with moderate use once tweaked; with most useful options enabled (even S-voice, NFC, Always-On Display and GPS). I also have access to a totally vanilla, unmodified/untweaked S7 Active that i bought for my parents (coming from a launch day AT&T Sammy S3) to compare with; GSAM battery stats etc, for a wholistic 'Out Of Box' vs tweaked comparison.
Ideally, and mostly for app/settings backup/misc tweaks, id like to see the S7a rooted, but i dont feel its entirely needed, all things considered. Mine is now pending SIM unlock via AT&T (obviously) and i have all bloatware disabled, greenified, and tweaked for even better battery life as well as a simple, smooth, one page launcher/one page dock to keep things nice, neat and clean.
I upgraded from a rooted/ROMed/SIM unlocked Galaxy S4 with an ancient S4 Goldeneye Int'l ROM that i heavily modified, only because i kept getting SIM NOT INSTALLED errors and GPS refused to lock on after i dropped it (for only the second time i might add, after 3 years), with an Anker 5200Mah battery/cover, and i absolutely love it. Being able to rinse it off without fear and let it get bumped about is a relief; i really took great care to keep my old S4 in excellent shape and not damage it. For the first time, i bought a case (TPU) and screen protector, as i intend to keep it for at least 3 years; same as the S4; i just dont plan to baby it, as i bike, kayak, am active in motorsports, horseriding, camping, skydiving, and just about anything else i can do. Normally, i would stuff my S4 into a ziplock with paper towels or foam around it when doing anything 'risky'; its nice to have a phone thats decently durable again; my first phone was a Nokia 5165; it survived being backed over by my ancient 1983 Mazda RX-7, having the antenna chewed on for hours by a bored German Shepard, as well as thrown down a staircase by a crazy high school ex-girlfriend; i missed its rugged durability, though not the ex'es mood swings, though i am far more careful now, both with my phones and romantic choices.
I have been modding phones since WinMo 5.0 and Pineapple for iPhone 3G; from the HTC Hermes/AT&T 8525, HTC 8925 TyTN II/Kaiser, iPhone 3G, Moto Atrix 4g/Olympus, Sammy S3 and Sammy S4; ROMs, add-ons, hacks, tethering, misc tweaks, and all means of assorted risky business to make my mobile better suited to my lifestyle and what i want out of it. I travel a lot for work, sport, and vacations.
This appears to be the first fully featured, ruggedized flagship with no compromises (aside from locked to GSM and initially via AT&T only), but otherwise i have found no real faults. I prefer plastics and rubber over glass and metal; they tend to last longer and survive far better than pretty/elegant/unique metal/glass designs. I paid for it outright, and AT&T kindly sent me the SIM unlock code 2 days after i requested it, for free, as i am travelling to France, Greece, and Russia shortly to visit family and friends. I had a few friends who have had S4, S5, and S6 Actives and loved them, although 2 did manage to crack the screens dropping them. Based on recent youtube stuff, i cant see that happening as frequently with the S7 Active due to the plastic laminated screen, though it will scratch easier.
I will not attempt to test its durability, so dont ask. Plenty of youtube and misc reviews do that and far more; i think its kind of useless, redundant, and wasteful to intentionally subject anything to needless duress just to 'test' out its capabilities, so please dont ask about that. Anything else is a total go; from adoptable storage to wifi and APN testing, i am totally game.
UPDATE
just to clarify some specs, the screen is actually a laminate of polycarbonate plastic on top of Gorilla Glass 4, so while it is much improved in terms of shatter resistance, it is MUCH more prone to scratches, i highly recommend a glass screen protector so you dont scratch up the polycarb screen. I bought a SuperShieldz 2 pack for $8 that works great. the laminate plastic is NOT removable, so once scratched, its there permanently. A cheap case isnt a bad idea either, i bought a clear Cimo TPU cover for $8 for the hell of it.
I have never broken a screen yet, but i had dropped my phones a few times, never used screen protectors or cases/covers either, but figured for a few bucks, considering im much more into kayaking, hiking, biking, and skiing now (funny how more income=more toys and more fun), why the hell not? its a big device as is; but i have been consistently seeing 30 hours of battery life between charges, which is enough to get me through 2 days of moderate to heavy use in areas with terrible signal and no wi-fi.
Adoptable storage really isnt needed; it CAN be done, but there's no going back besides a factory reset if you want things to work properly. I tried it for 3 days, and eventually reset and went back to external portable storage, and transferred all apps, data, pics, etc to ExtSD as well as scripted an auto transfer of all videos, pics, downloads, etc from internal to external storage nightly onto the 200GB microSD card i bought. Also, im paranoid about wearing out the micro USB port as i did (twice) with my S4, so i bought a Samsung Fast Wireless Charger. Its just as fast as the regular, wired fast charger you get in the box, plus its basically just a tilted disc cradle with a Fast Charger plugged into it; same cable and power brick as the S7 Active charger you get in the box. I bought a second, black one i intend to hack down and stealth install into the center console of my Mazda RX-8 above the transmission tunnel behind the shifter so i can hide the wires.

The easiest and cleanest way without root is to utilize Package Disabler Pro in the Google Play store, and disable 'Gallery'. You can also enable private mode on the folders or albums you dont want to see (i did this to avoid seeing ad based albums, system albums, as well as album covers for music that i have on a 200GB MicroSD card).

The activity button is awesome to have actually; its why i went for the S7 Active over the regular S7; programmable to 3 different apps (short press, double press, long press, or you can disable them individually). Mine is set to Camera (short) and a free flashlight app (long) with double press disabled (i rarely use activity zone).
I have a new unlimited plan with AT&T, just switched from Verizon, and I am having trouble getting any tethering working. I even tested FoxFi and several other apps from the store.
Do you have any solutions?
Does the phone use a custom rom other than the standard samsung s7 (edge) rom? I noticed the model number is different and ofc it has the extra button...
So, will at&t update this phone with all the (limited) updates samsung provides? And if we were to get root access, will we be able to install the roms for s7?
Other question: Why doesnt this phone work with the gear VR platform? (what are the differences?)
thx!

There are tethering apps and VPN options, but i havent tried them out just yet. Tethering with the rooted/unlocked/ROM'ed S4 was a quick launch button away, and was awesome because i could manage portfolios for clients right on their own computer or tablet at a golf course or at a race track or wherever. my clients LOVED when i did that for them lol.

(what are the differences?)
thx!

The ROM appears to be different, is activity zone and activity button functionality all built in. I doubt we will get root access, frankly, but i dont think its really needed, once i have a solution worked out for tethering i'll be quite happy.

As for Gear VR, it WOULD work, its the physical size of the device that is the main constraint, although a buddy modified his VR to work with it. I have no interest in VR so havent bothered. Ill ask him to send some pics.

Hi Slade8525, I got my S7Active few weeks ago, because I was very attracted by the 4000 mAh battery.
The problem is... I can't get even a full day! I found Android System sucking >30% of the battery, is this something happening also in your device?
Unfortunately I couldn't find any battery analyzer that will break down the drain by package, so I always have Android System and Android OS as the mayor battery offenders...

No, Android System is closer to 15% and thats with literally EVERYTHING turned on (GPS, wifi, NFC, Bluetooth etc); with it stripped down and all excess services (google app, svoice, etc) its closer to 8%.
Try backing up apps, install GSam battery monitor (not root version), and let it run for 2-3 days to figure out whats eating your battery. Also check out Apk Disabler Pro for Samsung; i'll post the list of disabled services from mine if you like. Aside from that, some clever work in Tasker and Greenify and you should hit 30 to 40 hours with decent SOT out of it.
May want to try a factory reset and start fresh; ive done it twice already, to learn what combo's work best or cause issues. its a pain but was worth it.

Hello,
I think you've already answered this, but where can I find a root file for my Samsung Galaxy S7 Active ?
I think I saw that file is archived somewhere, I am a new user, do you have a link to these files ?
Thank you.
Matt.
Could you post pics of modified vr for s7 active? Also, will s7 roms be compatible with the s7 active? Only thing I believe could be issues would be with the quad core processor (where the s7 has an 8 core), battery size, and tactile buttons.

Friend tried to install a rooted S7 (non-edge, USA Qualcomm 820) ROM and it simply bootloops, he managed to get it back to stock (ill try to find the stock S7 Active ROM for Odin/brick purposes and post a link). Root has not been achieved for S7 Active and likely never will, sadly.

AT&T store in USA (bought 5 total actually; folks, myself, GF, and for 2 relatives in Europe). I requested that AT&T unlock them, and as they were paid for outright, AT&T sent the correct unlock codes for each unit. S7 Active is ONLY available in USA through AT&T, however WILL work on any international GSM carrier or USA GSM carrier ONCE it is SIM unlocked. Again, if you pay for it outright, are in good standing with AT&T, they will unlock it no questions, no problems, and no additional costs. They can also be unlocked, for a price, by certain websites that you could find by doing a google search, id prefer not to refer or name companies.

SOME nationally available and all int'l S7/S7 Edge have the Exynos octa-core; all AT&T S7, S7 Edge, and S7 Active have Qualcomm 820 quad core processor. I will try to get pics of my friends modified VR; he just left overseas for work. S7/S7 Edge ROMs will lead to endless bootloops (ie have to ODIN back to stock) and it is likely there will never be root or ROM options for these phones, which is unfortunate.
I played with an S7 and S7 Edge; the programmable active button is awesome, there are no cut corners on specs (do get a glass screen protector asap though), and the battery i average 40 hours with Greenify, a tasker screen-off kill-open-apps task, and bloatware (including all facebook crap) disabled. i leave S-voice on, Google App on, wifi on about 50% of the time, and GPS always on.
Thx. Also could we use kingroot?
My rear camera glass cover shattered after just 1 week for no apparent reason (never been dropped) in a perfect circular pattern. Any way it can be replaced without paying the insurance cost? Can't find parts online anywhere.
Ok so when the Note 7 came out I bought it, Gear VR, and a bunch of accessories. Finally got my box to send back my Note 7. So right now my daily driver is a Galaxy S7 Edge.
I really like the Gear VR and use it alot for games, 3D movies and watching horror movies after my wife goes to bed. Putting my S7 Edge in the gear is a bit of a pain. I have to take the case off, headphones in, line it up, clean any debris between the phone and the goggles, etc.
So I was thinking I still have this Note 4 that works great on wifi and with the Gear, why not just keep it and use it just for VR, and maybe a TV remote.
What would be the best way to really streamline the phone? I wouldn't need things like the phone app, text message app, pretty much everything not related to the VR could go. I am currently running 5.1.1. Should I leave it on that version and just start disabling applications? I know I want to stop a number of things from loading at startup. If possible remove all the phone software, etc.
Without a stable root I know this would take forever if just using trial and error. Also would it run faster if I upgraded it to marshmallow?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, I need some guidance from more knowledgeable users deciding between phones due to my lack of detailed information on the mod ecosystem of the newer Samsung devices, since I stopped paying attention after Samsung dropped features I prefer (removable battery, IR blaster, etc). I have a note 4 that was rooted and running a custom rom that worked like a champ until recently with the ZeroLemon 10Ah battery when it decided to die. I use my phone as a pocket Linux computer so stripping away most of the limitations placed on the device by the manufacturers is what I desire to do.
Can people who have owned or have detailed knowledge of the current ecosystem weigh in on the pro and cons of the note 10+ vs the note 9 beyond the basic technical differences on the data sheets? I am currently researching information regarding the following:
Software Bugs
Root support/stability (Traditional or Magisk)
MicroG support (I want as little google in my life as possible)
TWRP(or equivalent) compatibility
Tasker and Xprivacy compatibility or equivalent.
Custom Rom support(general development and extra hardware feature support like Fingerpring reader being usable by apps or Hotspot capability)
bypassing and stability of warranty voiding/feature locking measures(KNOX, SafetyNet)
Overall I just want to better understand the upper limits and issues of modification that can be achieved with each device while holding on to as much built in functions as possible.
I do not need the absolute most cutting edge technical performance from parts, but features included in the SoC or RAM capacity for software expansion that affect longevity I would want to know. I dont really mind the need to use a dongle for 3.5mm audio on the 10+ but avoiding sending Samsung the message that its removal was ok for a supposed kitchen sink device is a small consideration. I would have liked and IR blaster but that ship has sailed on the new Samsung devices regardless. I would get a battery case that adds a few thousand mAh's for the 10+ or 9 so small differences in use endurance would be heavily mitigated. If it turns out the 10+ is just a stopgap half-step until the actual refinement (Note 11?) then I can try to send in my Note 4 to Samsung and get it online for another year since paying $1000US for an experiment or obligatory product cycle launch is not really what I am looking for at the moment since I keep phones for a while. From what I read so far their product line seems to speak of artificial market segregation and I feel the base note 10 only exists to make the S and the 10+ look better while getting rid of surplus inventory of parts from other product lines. Overall it just made me wary of potential hiccups for long term use.
If you would like me to specify anything else I will do my best to answer quickly. Thanks for any help you can provide. :good:
Now im off to continue my reading and watching of reviews for these devices.
EDIT:
I didn't think It needed to be said, but can we try to keep the answers constructive instead of snarky for no reason? If you need to be snarky for no reason plz make your comment as amusing and original as possible. Thx
EDIT 2:
So in addition to the removal of the 3.5mm audio port from the N10/N10+, Samsung has seen fit to entirely remove the internal DAC from the phone. Passive USB-C to 3.5mm adapters will not function and explains why certain external DACs "may experience bugs" and why many of the external battery cases claim to support data sync but not USB-C to 3.5mm audio.
I am corresponding with a ZeroLemon representative to get them to clarify the capabilities of the 5Ah battery case and the 10Ah variant that "will be available in a few weeks". (EDIT) ZeroLemon have confirmed that their extended battery cases have no wired audio functionality with or without DAC integrated into the mix. They are reluctant to give me wiring data so I can only take the demerit at their word.
Removing the 3.5mm jack was bad enough but Samsung removing the DAC entirely is a little overboard for the cost of the device imo just to offload the cost with a $20US basic dongle you buy separately. I can understand it from a business perspective, but as a consumer I am not pleased with Samsungs development direction.

I see how it would be similar on the surface. Aside from the fact that I stated I was already doing my own research and this question is supplemental to that, and this question is directed at those whom already have the information I am asking(actual contractors or people with knowledge of the trade). You might even say its also similar to asking someone who just had their house remodeled how much their contractor charged them for the work and if they did a good job.
Why would I want to own an iPhone? I think the last iDevice I owned was an iPod touch I got for free over 10 years ago and I had to jailbreak it just for it to be tolerable. Wait, are you just being snarky to avoid actually giving me any constructive information? That cant be something someone would come on to XDA to do?

I agree that both devices would probably be a slight upgrade over the Note 4 aside from the removable battery, IR blaster, and 3.5mm jack(Note 10+) being absent. The Note 4 was great, its flexibility and features made me disappointed in the following iterations until the Note 7 fiasco when I finally just stopped paying attention to Samsung releases since a removable battery would have entirely mitigated the issue they faced at the time.
Cool, im glad you like the Note 10+. What particular stuff for you does it do well in comparison to your Note 9 if you dont mind me asking?

Glad you liked it. One of my favorite sites.
But in all seriousness, there's some pretty in depth comparisons on YouTube from power users. I watched a few when making my decision to jump from the Note 9.
Is it upgrade from the Note 4. Absolutely. Is it an upgrade from the Note 9? I would say so. They refined the form factor from the Note 8/9, the screen is gorgeous, and it's a powerhouse.
Let me put it this way. I recently bought an nVidia Shield TV for gaming, especially emulating older gaming systems such as the GameCube (a notoriously difficult console to emulate, unless you have a gaming PC). The Shield TV is the reigning king of mobile banking powerhouses, and YouTube recommended it for emulation.
I was all excited for the Shield TV, got it set up, and it did decent. I had to fiddle with the settings, and I finally got Eternal Darkness to run DECENTLY at 720p with just a few slowdowns and stutters. It's maintained 60fps for the majority of the game, but would occasionally slow to about 40fps and the game would move like molasses. Nothing like fighting demons in slow motion.
Well, hooked up my Note 10+ to my TV, and ran the same emulator on the Note 10+ through DeX, and holy crap. It runs that game smooth as butter at 1080p. Except for one scene that stuttered for about a second, it runs at full 60fps. I'm selling my Shield TV. Why do I need it when it's inferior to my Note 10+ for gaming.
So what I'm trying to say, for functionality (S-Pen, air commands, DeX) the Note 10+ is an amazing phone. As far as power? Well, gaming is one of the most taxing things you can do with a phone, and this one doesn't even blink when heavy games are thrown at it. Now, if I crank all the Dolphin emulator options up to full, it will slow down and spit and sputter to the point it's not playable. But I think 1080p rendering at 60fps for a console game is more than impressive.
Yes, you lose root. Who needs it? Yes you lose the removable battery. I can't argue that one, really, but it hasn't bothered me in the last four years since most manufacturers did away with them. Yes you lose the IR blaster. I never used it, except in a hotel bar to put the baseball game on their TV when the bartender stepped away, LOL. What you gain compared to the Note 4 is more than worth the trade off.
Note 9 vs Note 10+ is a closer argument, but I don't regret upgrading even a little bit.

I agree the phones of today blow the note 4 out of the water on pure specs and many feature implementations. What keeps me on the fence is how new the note 10+ is at the moment. Im not sure how its hardware will affect the Rom/App ecosystem longterm and I would be keeping this $1000+ investment for a while in comparison to the Note 9 which can be had for hundreds of dollars cheaper, but im willing to pay the extra cost if there are no long term downsides.

That is pretty impressive. I know certain consoles are a pain in the butt to emulate efficiently because of their custom architectures. That is definitely a win for the N10+. I dont really play heavy games on my phone as I have a gaming PC so my phone gaming is largely limited to things like Townsmen, Kingdom Rush, style games along with older emulators also, but that kind of hardware capability is something you want from a device like this. I would probably play much older consoles this way so I can start and stop on the go etc. Playing Zelda on the go and continuing at home sounds appealing at this moment.

When I say "power" I personally mean usage flexibility, basic and advanced features, and capability for longevity through modifications once Samsung decides its of lower priority. As far as pure grunt(IPC, clock rate, etc.) I find it to be a close secondary concern while still being important. A lot of the features in the new phones were pioneered by 3rd party developers before Samsung/Google made an in-house version. In the long term being less dependent on samsung and google is best so they cant artificially limit your device when they decide you should be buying the new one so hardware that is easy for me and dedicated devs to work with is very important for me.

I may need root(Magisk/SU access), but the specifics of the ecosystem may have shifted enough to where applications like Tasker no longer require root level access. I do need TWRP or some equivalent to work for testing roms and backups though.
The lack of a removable battery bothers me on the level that its not an option and from a function over form engineering standpoint I don't like the idea of a potentially volatile piece of technology being a major failure point of a expensive device. Both on the level of LiPo/Li-ion batteries chemically(I know they are safe generally) and not being able to disconnect a device from its power source if necessary. I know more than a few people personally over the years who had phones(and other compact devices) with internal batteries that have destroyed themselves simply because of the battery physically expanding causing damage to surrounding systems and or because a some hardware or software problem cause a loop of damage(electrical or thermal) to the device that couldnt be stopped. The entire Note 7 was an exercise in why removable power sources in general are a good idea and it cost Samsung both money and image not abiding by that principle. I will admit the theft protection aspect of a non removable battery is a bonus. I plan to use an Aquero), and other items in addition to those niche times you mentioned. The only pain was the fact the Samsung installed an IR transmitter instead of a transceiver on the note 4 so I had to work around getting all my remote codes into the phone the harder way. This was the kind of detail I worry about and why I asked this question, even though I see now many do not appreciate me asking in such a way.
Note 9 vs Note 10+ is a closer argument, but I don't regret upgrading even a little bit.

Im glad you are happy with your purchase, and I agree that in general if there are no major flaws related to my specific usage wants/requirements that the 9 and 10+ would be a great improvement over the note 4. As far as the Note 4 still being on the table is just in the circumstance of there being data that the note 10+ represents more of a tick or a tock relative to the phones next year in which case I can just spend $100 to get it fixed and wait. The segmentation between the S10, N10, N10+, makes me wonder about the plans for the product line, but if the Note 10 is just a case of Samsung getting rid of backlog parts then its probably nothing.
Thanks for taking the time to answer and giving me your perspective. I really appreciate it. :highfive:

I agree that the term "power user" is a fairly ambiguous term that can mean different things to different people. I agree that you can do things with an iphone, but what they have in stability they greatly lack in operational/usage flexibility at the high end. My device I paid for telling me "no" when it technically capable of doing what I want is not something I will tolerate unless absolutely necessary.
What I personally qualify as a "power user" is having usages well outside of what most would consider "phone" use(light internet, few notes, a game or two, and some videos). This moves into the territory of Custom Roms, heavy tasker automation, regular file transfer, file hosting and streaming, hotspot usage while connected to a VPN or SSH connection, diagnostic work, remote control(TV-PC control), etc. Overall if you think of your device as more or a pocket Linux computer with phone capability as opposed to a phone with extra features that are useful/fun, you likely would fall under some metric of the "power user" umbrella. In my experience most users I have ever met fall into the latter category while many less fall into the former. There are still cases to me where you can be a "power user" if you only use one specific feature to its limits in the <10% of users range.
I understand the economics of Samsungs feature shifts, but doesnt mean I have to like it. Apple devices are simply incompatible with my usage demands, I tried to live with my brothers old Iphone X or 9 for a week and it was painful.

If you acknowledge the idea that a person only using a phone for social networking (regardless of the phone) isnt a "power user", then you kind of made my point for me. That it isn't the phone it's the user.
Also you seem to imply "power user" is synonymous with owning the newest phone, which I would also say is kind of a fallacy.
Regarding software bugs:
The Note 10/+ are running One UI 1.5 and coming from my S9+ running One UI 1.0, I noticed the following improvements:
1. No more bluetooth volume warning message
2. Automated switching ("Sunset to Sunrise") between Night Mode and Day(?) Mode no longer leaves minimized notifications in the wrong mode. I would look at my notification shade after the phone automatically switched back to Day Mode and a couple minimized notifications at the bottom would still be in the dark shade. I would have to toggle Night Mode on and off and turn the schedule on again to make things right (until I repeated this 24 hours later!)
3. When the notification shade is fully extended and you have to actually scroll down to go through every single one, the animation has been cleaned up so that the icons of the bottom-most notifications don't look they're falling into/out of the UI. If ever there was a case that Samsung is not Apple, this would have been it.
4. When you pull down the notification shade, the toggles are actually correct the first time you glance at them (and previously you would pull down, push up, pull down again to see the toggles as they should be.)
5. Split screen works better. The initial app docks very well to the top half of the screen and the phone understands better that all the task switching and app gymnastics you do are meant for the bottom half of the display.
6. Apps install blazingly fast.
