GPS problem - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I have à problem with my gps. It's not working since i changed the motherboard Last week. I unmounted and reassemble 4 or 5 times the motherboard for see if a connector wasn't good connected but all time i see nothing bad.
I also tried different roms but it's the same
I checked with GPS test, and i have more or less 20 satellites on view, but 0 in use.
I look on internet but can't find the emplacement of this antenna. Some of you have à picture where we can see this antenna.?
I read on a forum that most of time when we change Motherboard we have this problem, had you already heard this?
And can we change this antenna? ( on internet i found Bluetooth, nfc, but not gps...)
Thanks for your help.

So i checked with my old motherboard and like most of time with this problem, it's a hardware problem. When i saw 20 satelites it was because of internet. When i booted without internet i had 0 satelites in view.
And it's mean also it's imposible to change the antenna.
Bad new for me but i have my answer.

[Samsung i780] GPS cannot fix on any satelites

Hi,
I am new here and just bought an i780 in S'pore 4 weeks ago, running on i780DXHD1 (Radio + PDA). I have been trying to use the GPS for weeks using the bundled NavFone but it always could not fix on any satelites. In the signal strength, there is no single bar appear. I tried MapKing, it is the same. When i checked on MapKing GPS data stream, it is always empty. when i checked on the dailpad, the GPS logo is active(not crossed). When i turn off the GPS application, the GPS logo is inactive (crossed). With this, can i assume the GPS hardware is working? But why no data stream? I have tried turning on XTRA, but it is the same. Below is my configuration:
[NavFone]
Software Port GDP1:
Hardware port COM9:
baud 4800
Windows managed: yes/checked
[MapKing(trial)]
Software Port COM8:
Hardware port COM9:
baud 4800
windows managed: yes/checked
Please help.... Thanks!

co6ra,
First off, you need to stand in an open space before you activate your GPS. I uses Agis software too, and based on my experience when you use it the first time, the signal tends to get a little longer than usual. At times, it can even be over 10 minutes before I get a signal.
To assist your time to get the signal, I would advise you to use the Enhanced GPS found in your settings>system. Clicked on the enhanced gps and select Enable in the XTRA Enable. There is no need to select Auto Download (that is, Disable).
This would mean that the device will also use the base stations to assist in finding the location of your device. Of course the downside to it is you will incur GPRS charges.
Try it and see if you can get the signal.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. For the past 4 weeks, i have been trying all sort of methods; standing at my aprtment balcony, in an open field, in a bus, windows seat, etc. all with at least 30 minutes. When i was at home, i stood at the balcony, turn on my wifi, and kept downloading the XTRA. Sometimes, i cannot see any bar at all; sometimes, i saw a lot of bars, with different PRN number, but all empty (strength 0), and kept changing, but still no fix...
help....~~
i have the same problem too until I download a software call GPSgate, there after I am uable to use my gps, I do not have the link , try seaching on the web.

I thought GPSGate is some kind of port sharing program? Both NavFone and MapKing is able to connect to the GPS unit, it just could not fix. Is it possible that the GPS is locked?
Anyhow, will try on GPSGate later. What is the recommended configuration?....
Thanks!
Installed GPSGate, and found that now MapKing is able to connect to the port and receive data. When i check on the GPS stream, it always appear to have the first line with data(some figures deliminated with ","), but follows by a few line with empty data (no figure, but a lot of ","). When i checked GPSGate, the status of the input port is always "GPS data but no position". I have tried just now in an open space, clear night sky, for at 40 mins, it still cannot fix on any satelite....
Help!...is this something to do with hardware?

Since you have not flashed to any custom rom (I hope you did not) why not send your device back to the SSC and lodge a complain that the GPS is not working at all.
If they say nothing is wrong, ask them to demonstrate that the GPS is able to lock in the signals.
I know it is frustrating to have features and yet not working. It can be a case of hardware issue. Let's see how the SSC can help you, since yours is still under warranty.
I wish you would be able to solve your GPS issue. i780 is still a great phone. Let us know how it goes, okay?
ya...i am travelling now and expect the GPS to work....should have not trust it will work out from box. will visit the SSC when i am back to S'pore 3 weeks later....

In the meantime, just keep on trying, if you have time to spare. Who knows? You might have it resolved by then.
All the best... And good luck...

According to http://gpsinformation.org/dale/nmea.htm, GGA is one of the most important stream to provide location data. From the log, it seems like the GPS is not able to calculate the current location at all? What is wrong with the GPS unit???...
Ya...i have been trying to put the GPS on everytime i am outside, in total, i think i have tested no less than 10 hours, but still no luck....
co6ra,
From the looks of your log file, it seems that your GPS chipset might not be working. Those coordinates that you have should come from the base station of the phone.
I tried it indoor, and it seems that there are satellites showing, but just could not get a fix on it too (But then, I was indoor).
Your log file might be useful, especially when you bring your unit back to SSC for service.
P/S: My settings are as follows:
Enhanced GPS XTRA is enabled but Auto Download is disabled.
When running NavFone, my settings are as follows:
Don't worry about the external GPS settings, just leave it as it is.
I will feedback later when I am on the balcony. Please be patient.

Yes, what you said is true, the GGA data is the coordinates of your device and determine your location.
I have sent the same log to Agis and Samsung via emails. Waiting for their reply. Hopefully they can solve this by next week, so that i can use it when i need it most as i am travelling to Malaysia now.
BTW, do you guys think that this might be a locked GPS? Anybody has any ideas? If so, how to unlock?
Locked? what do you mean? It shouldn't be and it should work right out of the box.
i am not sure also...read few article on locked GPS topic, which they key in a code to unlock/activate the gps unit.
No luck. Samsung Singapore support does not even want to reply to my email....
Just happen that one of my colleagues travelled to my local office. Has switched back to my old BenQ P50 and let my colleague to bring down the unit back to Samsung S'pore. They claim that it might be a software issue and saying that they are going to flash the latest ROM to see if it helps.

I went through this same thing, I now have Tomtom7 running perfectly and getting a fix in seconds.
It is highly important that you have a working Sim card, correct GPRS or EDGE settings and that XTRA is Enabled!
Use GPS Gate stock settings! ie. prior to running GPS Gate goto External GPS and select com2, then run GPS Gate and use the wizard and let it find Com2.
GPRS/EDGE should try to connect automatically if not then switch it on, exit and restart GPS Gate. Be patient on the first fix it can take 5 mins, it should not take this long though.
Wait until GPS Gate shows that dark green icon in app tray and has a valid position, once it does then execute your GPS software and use (Franson Virtual com 1) default comport generated by GPS Gate.
GPRS/EDGE can be turned off after GPS Gate shows that it has your position and this need only be done once. This has worked on Omnia after many many hours of failure and frustration.

Intermittent GPS Problem

Hi there.
I've searched for this problem and hadn't found much information, maybe some of you had this problem.
The problem is: The GPS software don't receive signal from the GPS receiver, sometimes 1 (to a max of 3 bars) on the satelitte options of the GPS software go up, but no fix. Other times with no apparent reason it works correctly until it goes out again (from some minutes to some days).
I've tried with this softwares, and the same results:
Tom Tom navigator 7
Garmin XT
Ndrive (don't know the version)
and
NoniGPSPlot (it's not a navitation software but should work to test)
I've tried several ROMs, same results.
I've tried to clean the internal antenna contacts and bend them in a way to make a best contact.
Any guess?
Best Regards.
Have you tried updating the quickgps to get a better fix?
Also where are you running the gps from? (home, outside etc.)
Hi, thanks for your reply.
I've tried that, but I think it wouldn't make wonders anyway. One of the times I was able to put it working, was after updating QuickGPS, but now I see it was a coincidence.
I make most of the tries at a balcony I have in my apartment where I can see about 70% of the sky (it already worked there before).
Any more guesses?
Best Regards.

Depending on the location, i have realised you have to move around to get a good fix.
If you move around, say around 2 square meter in you balcony you wont be able to get a precise fix as the satellite will think your are still in the same place. Try walking around with it on the road and see if you get any improvements.
if you still have no luck and since you have tried various roms i would suggest you send it for repair?
I thought that it would be better to be still to get a better fix... It seems I'm wrong.
I'm now trying the original ROM from HTC.
BTW, "as the satellite will think your are still in the same place", I thought the GPS system only receives information from the satellites, am I wrong?
Best Regards.
Sorry i meant the gps reciever
Finally I solved the problem.
Sent my Artemis to service
The main board was replaced, now it works as a charm.
Best Regards.

HTC pro2 GPS , help!

Hi guys
I got my first WM phone HTC pro2 recently from Vodafone UK. Everything is good except GPS. I read this forum carefully. I did hard reset, soft reset, set different port and baud, download QuickGPS, I also try some tweaks, buy GPS still not working. when I open Google Maps, clicked the use GPS, after “seeking satellite…” near ten minutes and Google Maps told me I have GPS problem. HTC GPS tool show me GPS signal was 0 and only a red spot on the top of circle. Other GPS programs such as “GPS test” and BeeLineGPS had same result like HTC GPS tool. Open Garmin, always said “searching satellite …” and Tomtom told me “Poor GPS receptions—are you inside the building?”
My questions are, based your guys experience what happened? It is hardware problem or the setting’s problem? When you guys talking about the GPS cannot get fix, do you have GPS signal on the GPS program (like signal strength, some red and green spots on the circle etc)? If I flash hard-SPL and other Radio Rom can resolve my problem? Are there other solutions? Warranty.
I used destinator 7 on a small trip, and was able to work.
However, looking at the settings screen where the signal for each satellite was displayed, I cannot say I am impressed. The signal strength was extremely low...
Can you install destinator and try also yourself?
Apologies if this is very basic, but I assume you are outside with a clear view of the sky when trying it out?

yes , i am in open field, far away from building, several times, more than 40 minutes. thanks I will try it. but I am wondering why signal strength is 0. low strength, hard to fix and no signal strength is totally diferent issue, i guess.
I am proposing the destinator, because it has a function that detects the port & some settings of the gps...
I am on Sprint in the US, but this worked for me. I am not sure if you did this.
If you have TouchFlo enabled go to the Settings Tab, then go to All Settings.
In the all settings, click the Personal then click Phone. In there click GSM/UMTS services (I am assuming you have a GSM phone, I don't know). Select Location Setting and then Get settings. Make sure it is turned on.
Then this part you said you did, but I will tell you my settings anyway. Go back to the all settings. Now go to system and then external gps. Then go to programs and select COM port 9. Under hardware it should be None and the baud rate is 4800. Then under access check the box to have manage gps enabled.
Now, when you use google maps, go to the settings in google maps and click gps settings. Change the option from let windows mobile manage my gps to manual and pick com 9 and 4800.
Then enable the gps and get a clear view of the sky and see if it works. It might take about 20 seconds for it to get some satellites the first time.
Did you notice there is a firmware update to enahnce gps fixes? Might be worth giving it a try
Thanks all.
there is not locaiton at setting, personal, phone , services.
this phone is vodafone branded, i think I need hard-SPL first to flash firmware.

Hi,
I have been experiencing the same problem. Have read many posts. It normally happens when phone your phone displays H or 3G. For some reason the triangulation and the Gps stops working.
Try it when you have E or G showing on the phone it will work like a charm.
This is my second TP2 first one never had a problem and was vodafone branded as well. Will try and find a solution and will let you know. I have tried different radios though!
Hi
I had the same issue with my T mobile branded TP2. Sometimes (after houres) I had a fix and then it dropped again. I discovered that when you switch WIFI off, it all works like charm. WIFI somehow jams the GPS receiver.
Same Issue
I have the Sprint Touch Pro2 and have tried every patch available, several registry edits, different settings and quick GPS settings to get my GPS running properly. Just before my 30 day return/refund period had almost lapsed I decided to exchange my device. Sprint tried to talk me into some drawn out process of dealing with advanced tech support and starting a ticket on the issue which would have gone way beyond my 30 day period to exchange the phone. To make a short story long, exchanging the phone couldn't have been more convenient and upon setting up Quick GPS and trying out the installed Live Search application, my phone found 9 satelites within seconds. I guess it was the device. Just a cautionary tale that if you think you've tried everything to get your GPS working, there's no harm in getting another Touch Pro2.

GPS Problem - all of a sudden it won't fix

Hi all,
I have some sort of problem with the GPS. Last Saturday it suddenly wouldn't get a fix at all. I tried taking the battery out and rebooting and still no joy. Then suddenly on Monday it started working again. I was on a flight on Wednesday and it worked on the flight too. About 2 hours later, I was on a train and again, no joy but put it down to maybe some strange coating on the glass. However, I tried again yesterday while out in my car and not a dickybird.
It sounds like a loose connection in the phone or something like this. Does anyone have any photos of where the GPS unit is or how to dis-assemble it to check the firmness of the connection ? Or is there any program that I can load on my TP2 to check what the GPS is actually doing ?

Having the same sort of issue with GPS on WM6.5... HTC are (well should be) working on but they have so far sent a gps test cab in the last month... which was useless... like you it will work great one minute then 'acquiring satellites' for ages... unless you have dropped and damaged radio would put the tools away for the moment as looks like software related (how WM6.5 manages GPS lock) that is the problem
I've never had a problem before and i've used it both at home and abroad. I'd use it a couple of times every week.

People have said upgrading the radio helped or used the GPS hotfix from HTC... Did this myself recently and must admit it seemed to fix the problem...
I'm running Energy ROM 23557 Sense 2.5 Maxmanilla.

Thought the GPS hotfix on HTC site was for 6.1... so it works on 6.5 as well?...was going to flash the lastest europe 6.5 (with sense 2.5) it has a later radio but have read messaging is slow for some people, as waiting for HTC to fix on Telstra 6.5 is painful

When you say you can't get a lock, is this in just one particular app, or have you tried multiple GPS-enabled apps? You may need to determine if the device actually isn't seeing any sats, or if your app just isn't playing nice with the com port anymore.
THIS LINK is for Chartcross' GPS Test (free), it can at least tell you if your hardware is getting a lock independent of any nav apps.
Excellent - exactly what I was looking for. I'll test the Chartcross software on the way home tonight.

OK, I've got a Yellow circle and it says "GPS Starting up" so obviously doesn't even start to pull down data
Any ideas on what I can do ? Could there be a loose connection somewhere inside the phone ?

Did you see it scan through the com ports when it started up? The next thing I would check is the settings (settings-all settings-system-external GPS) and see what it says on the "programs" and "access" tabs
The GPS hardware is a chip that's soldered to the motherboard, so I doubt that's come "loose"...the only other hardware connection that comes into play is the one to whatever antenna the GPS utilizes, but I honestly don't know if uses the same one as the phone/data, or if the chip itself is just a fully integrated receiver
It scanned through the ports and identified it as COM4 and set the speed to 9600. I assume the circle should go green even if the antenna was weak but would be going through the motions of acquiring data.

If it was seeing any sats, there would be bars in the screen, like the screenshot on their site...so yes it def looks like the phone isn't locking at all. Just to be sure, is your QuickGPS data up to date?
I'd say the next step to try before trying to crack your case open would be to follow ultramag's suggestion and flash to a different radio...some users report drastic improvements in GPS performance after taking that step

How long did you wait? I've noticed that it can take up to 10-15 minutes before it'll lock all of them in and turn green. Are the bars moving at all?
Was running over 30 mins and stayed yellow. Bars never budged. I've had the same radio for the past 6 months at least so can't see why it would suddenly become a problem now.
Looks like my only option might be to open it up and check the connections. Everyone drops their phones now and again and I'm no different so there's every possibility of something having come loose.
Has anyone got a photo of the inside so I know what I'm looking for ? Where is the GPS ?

com 4 is correct as is 9600 baud. Likely the issue is with the radio you are using. T Mobile radios seem quite touchy. Try a new radio and see what you get. Start gps test first, get the gps running and locked before opening any program that needs gps to work and you likely will have better performance.

mine was working fine and like you was doubting my hardware... seems strange as my issues started with a software update ...some telcos (Telstra in AU) software conflicts with GPS... I installed a HTC rom from Europe yesterday and GPS is now working great... even now locks while car is in garage.. the HTC Desire just released in AU is also having GPS issues on Telstra 6.5 rom ... so have you tried a rom update? as sounds like may be your issue as well...
I'm running Deepshining Rom X6. I had the previous v12RC running since it was released with no problems. I had radio 4.49.25.17 running all the time but just decided to up this to 4.49.25.77 but still no change. It still says "GPS Starting Up". I must have some sort of loose connection since it wouldn't work last Saturday or Sunday but then worked fine on Monday and Wednesday. However, it hasn't worked again since last Wednesday.

I just opened up my TP2. Is the GPS chip just to the left of the Camera ? (on the right is the Speaker)

HTC EVO 4G wifi antenna problem

Hi guys the past week I've bought HTC EVO 4G(used = no warranty).. it have the problem with wifi/bluetooth/fm radio ...
I was searching in a lot of forums and many people have this problem too but there not a specific fix, so I've opened the phone and watch for myself just to see if there's a problem with the hardware.... and I've discovered that my phone doesn't have the external antenna connector...
so I think that maybe I can fix the problem if I reemplace that part (antenna) but the problem here is that the part is not comercial.
so searching and searching I've discovered that this antenna is like that the phones have (it's a external connector but I've read if this connector get damaged the signal reception will fail) ... so maybe I can take from a old phone and remplace. or maybe do a bridge with other antenna on the phone(evo has about 6 on the mobo) like antena of gps. but really I don't know if this connector has especifications or if later this mod will give me problems.
Really I want to know if this is the problem... I thought that xda-developers is the place for my question get cleared.
ote: this is not software problem, because I have done: wipes, restores, rom(RUU too), kernals, radios... but no luck
other thing is that sometimes (randomly) the bluetooth/wifi turn on but the bluetooth doesn't scan and the wifi shows "unable to scan networks".
now logcat just shows "wifi driver load error end 2" (obviously there's more log about it)
this is the image of what I'm talking about (is not my pic but is edited)
