I have had my Note 8 for a couple of months and just recently I have been having battery problems. I restored the Note 8 to factory settings (just to be sure) and am still having the same problem.
It seems that when I watch videos or play any games the battery depletes extremely quickly e.g Its 80%, I start to play the game and within 3-5 minutes the battery is 30%. I play again and its 5% and the screen dims (which is also a pain in the ....) I realise that Games and Apps use a lot of power but surely not this much.
I have looked around for battery calibration instructions and apps but are a bit dubious to try them as I have read that you can deplete the battery totally and the device then wont charge.
Just wondered if anybody else has had the same problem.

My note has a great battery life. For this situation I would look in the battery menu for any apps not closing correctly thus sucking battery. Remember to dis activate GPS, Bluetooth and data when not using them. Check the screen brightness is 50% or less. Automatic brightness should be fine also.

Don't waste time with calibration. Sounds like the battery ifs failing or dying, either way it's bad.

I usually have Bluetooth and GPS turned off and have the screen on Auto Brightness. I also restored to factory and the problem still persists.
One strange thing is that when I charge it from 10% it takes about 50 minutes to get to 100%. I thought that was a bit quick. The battery must be reporting the wrong charge to the OS. I wish they had user replaceable batteries in this thing although its probably not practical.
I will give Samsung a call. Cannot beleive it has happened now as I am off on holiday soon to the US and wanted to use it there.

Hi, I've had the same issue. I sent the device for service under warranty and they could not find a fault. They only reflashed the firmware.
Its been working fine since I got it back. I updated to 4.2.2 and its working just fine.

same with me chas0001, and JCUK89, my situation is actually identical to chas0001, but my device is like a mth old now, i received it on august 5th 2013,
so its basically been used for jus over a mth now. and i barely use it, maybe 3 hrs a day, most days less than 1 hr, constant use.
i dont kno, can anyone help. on xda developers. ??
I called Amazon.co.uk (where I bought it from) and they agreed to replace it for me. Its was definitely faulty and unusable. I kept reading about people with the similar problems and so eventually decided to not get a replacement but a refund.
Its a shame really. I really liked the device but I need something more reliable. I also don't care for Samsung with their constantly delayed OS updates. 4.1.2 for a 'flagship' device. Surely if they get rid of that Touchwiz crap they can release timely updates. You never know even my Note 2 may get an OS update this year!
Just went out and bought a Nexus 7 (2013). NOW...what to do with those 5 Galaxy Note 8 cases

I would see of you can get it exchanged (assuming you still want to keep the device).
Are there any advantages of factory resetting the GN 10.1 after receiving the KitKat update? Would it make the installation any 'cleaner' if you know what I mean! :laugh:

I wonder the same thing. I updated my stock tablet to Kitkat without doing a factory reset before or after the update. It seems to be widely recommend, but I wonder if there are any noticeable problems that can happen without resetting. Not that it hurts to do it, I just don't wanna lose any data. Since I'm not rooted, nor do have plans to root, I can create a backup through Kies and then factory reset, yes? Hopefully someone can shed some light on mine and the OP's questions.
As a general rule one could say : you don't have to reset but if you run into problems you know what's the reason for them.
Here's what I've been doing for the past 4 years with android. Change in version (4.2-> 4.3): I wipe. New firmware within same version (4.3-> 4.3) I don't wipe. Works for me But I'm always rooted and have full backups.
I just updated through kies and did not factory reset, so far no problems and definitely notice the speed improvements.

I have a noticeable issue with Kitkat with both charging and battery drain. I tried factory reset and that didn't help much. Also got an app from playstore called Battery Calibration. Ran it last night. So far it seems to have helped a little.
I have been able to pinpoint that the drain happens quickly whenever I am using the wifi. I've checked all the settings over and over.
This is of no help to you.... but you are not alone with the issue.

PS -- I recall with my old smartphones it was suggested (when flashing a new rom) that rom needed to settle for a or so before battery was stable. Not sure if that is true or not, but it's my last resort.

I noticed the same thing. However, I turned the Note completely off last night and let it charge 8 hours and it only went from 21% to 65%. So, if it's completely turned off the operating system should have no involvement with the charging process. KitKat should have nothing to do with it.
So, this morning I tried a different charger and, while it was still powered on, it went from 62% to 76% in about an hour. So, I'm no longer concerned.

What? 8 hours of charging you only got 44%. That is really bad.
Before KK 4.4.2 update, my Note 10.1 2014 took 6.5 hrs to charge from 0% to 100%. It has a lot to do witk KK I m sure.
I just did the factory reset. Drain the battery to 5%. Turn it off and charge again. Will let you guy know soon.

I think it is the best option. I did my OTA update as soon as I received the notification. The tablet run a lot faster. Much better than version 4.3. But this morning I found out I have a problem with charging. It took to long to charge. So I decided to do the factory reset. Hopefully it will fix the problem.

Thank you Barbara, it seems to be fine after I did factory reset. Used the tablet for about 5 hours (the battery went down from 80% to 5% in 5 hrs). Then I shut down to charge. It actually charged to 100% in about 5 hrs 15 minutes.

Make sure that if and when you charge to make sure you use at last a 2A charger and proper voltage. Also some homes might have light switches that turn off power for instance. Silly little things and please ppl these are smart batteries you do not need to drain them down, only thing worth mentioning is to charge for at least 15 minutes or more. If any other behavior call Samsung and have them fix your hardware.

This battery drain issue is really annoying. I have tried absolutely everything to fix it. Except unlocking bootloader and rooting. I shouldn't have to do that to get what the phone is capable of.
I sold my previous phone which was an Alcatel idol 3. Not a bad phone, just a little leggy. The battery in that phone was a 2900mAh, it lasted 2 days easy!!
This ZenFone 2 has better specs and a slightly bigger battery and I can't make it 10 hours, a lot of other users who also bought the phone have the same issues. Android OS battery drain.
I have 5 days before I can return the phone to the store ( I'll get charged a 10% restocking fee, which I should send the bill to ASUS)
Can anyone from ASUS tell me what's going on regarding a fix?? Update??
Would making a video about the issue help. ( I have access to some big name youtubers, phone reviewers) it might not help your sales though.

I have a feeling that you have a CN sku with WW rom... Am I correct?

Do you still get a battery drain when you use a different launcher? Ie. Nova launcher?
Do you have SD card inserted? I can't use SD card since before mediascanner finishes (500 songs on SD), all battery is drained or phone crashes and gets stuck in bootloop ... Also the mediascan clogs I/O and phone is so unresponsive that I can't turn screen on once scan starts. Removed SD card and phone works again.

I have the latest software, I'm waiting for the software fix which you guys need to provide.
I've done everything you suggested, already, nothing is working , its clearly a software bug.
What would make things easier, is if you just admitted there is a software bug, so people who have spent there hard earned money on your product would have some hope that a fix is in the works. Be honest and tell us.
My Asus phone is turned off as of today and in the box, I instead am using an Alcatel Idol 3, which is a joy to use, especially 2days battery life, with no Android OS battery drain!!
Not all Zenfone 2 have this issue. The one I am currently using can last for a few days on standby with firmware WW_2.19.40.22.

My ZenFone 2 heated up extremely a week ago while sitting on standby on my night stand. It has drained 75% in 7 hours. Since then the battery life is terrible. I am going to perform a radiotherapy and see if that helps. Most of the day I am using my 2 year old M7 which lasts the whole day with moderate to heavy usage. If the reservoirs not improve things I will contact Asus and see the next course of action. My phone is up to date as far as firmware is concerned.

He is right, though. Battery seems to be a mixed beg for some reason? My phone was fine in .20... Buuut I upgraded it anyways to ParanoidAndroid.
Just doing a factory reset on mine and it has been on (erasing) format least 5 minutes. Is this normal.

Well, AI brought my phone to work last night and got it back into recovery and wiping status. It took about 45-50 minutes before it shut off. Then I powered it back on which brought it back to wiping. It hung there for a minute and the went to the set up screen. That is the longest I have even seen a phone perform a factory reset. Will go through the setup later. Thanks Frank for your long to how to do this.

I was having really bad battery drain. Flashed CM 12.1 on it and it's been amazing since. Scored 48273 in Antutu and battery is lasting forever. Unplugged at 6am this morning, it's 4pm now, been using it with full brightness all day, I'm a heavy user. 45% still left.

It's a shame that you have to flash different software just to be able to get full use of the phone.
The amount of bloatware that came with this phone is probably the worst I've ever seen!!
Ever since upgrading to Android P (OTA) 3 days ago I've noticed the battery life is really poor. On Oreo I used to see only 1-2% drain overnight. Now I go to bed with full charge and wake up with only 60% left. The battery drains a lot faster when I'm using it as well.
I used to be able to get 6-7 hours SOT easily. Now I'm not even sure if I could squeeze 4 hours before the battery is flat.
Is anybody else seeing this? Or is this normal considering Android P just got installed and it needs time to "optimize stuff"? But then again, with Oreo I got awesome battery life from day 1.

Give it some time, once adapative battery figures out your usage and adjusts accordingly, you should see better battery life

I'm getting better battery life with Pie
Pixel 1 XL could last a long time. Pixel 2 XL was worse and the worst with Android P unfortunately. I upgraded from Beta, decided to factory reset since there was a bug with Wear OS eating the battery. Got a little better. Got some more little better disabling adaptive battery. I think Doze is still in Android P.
Anyway, it's still not that good. But decent.
I am having the same issue.
when I reboot the phone, the battery seems ok.
But when I start using the phone and open several apps, the battery starts draining quickly.
I installed magisk root, should I do a factory reset and not installing magisk?
I went from a day and 17 hours to 16 hours. This is definiately a piss-poor "improvement to battery life."

I'm not sure how much help adaptive battery is going to help. It's meant to limit background battery usage of infrequently used misbehaving apps. If that's not happening adaptive battery won't do much.

My battery life has been terrible. Today I unplugged at 93%. I've been off the charger for 9 hours with 4 hours screen on time. I'm at 23%. With Oreo that kind of usage would have me at about 40%.
I'd rather not have the hassle of having to do a factory reset but I might not have much choice.
It hasn't got any better since I reported the issue.
I think I'm going to flash Oreo instead of trying a factory reset as I doubt it would solve the problem. Maybe someone else could try and let us know.

So a few days ago I flashed Oreo only to have it tell me it couldn't find any of my backups on Google Drive during the initial setup. Of course, the backups were done when I was on Pie.
So I had to upgrade to Pie then factory reset. This time it found my backups.
Yesterday I managed to get 5 hours SOT with about 40% battery left. Life is all good now

looks like i'm going to have to do the same. It doesnt make sense how some people are getting better battery and other worse. Are there some of us running apps not 9.0 compatible? might be worth uninstalling everything and adding them back day by day. it'll take a long time though!

I had a similar experience. Battery life was awful after Pie update. Factory reset and it's back to normal.

It appears I jumped the gun. The problem came back yesterday.
The phone loses about 4-5% battery per hour even on standby. I have no idea what's going on; I haven't installed any new apps and usage pattern hasn't changed either.
One very interesting fact I have discovered is that the issue appears to happen only when I'm on Wifi. When I'm mobile data, all is good. So the phone seems to be doing some funky stuff when it's on Wifi lol.
Oh well, I guess I will try to install BBS and see if I could find the culprit.

That is entirely possible. I guess we have apps that have not been written/optimized for Pie? That would explain why some people are not seeing the issue and some unfortunate ones like us are.
I factory-resetted the phone, the issue is still there. I don't have any strange app. It seems that it's just the system that is consuming the battery.
That's very strange I've had the complete opposite, battery life has improved, if reset didn't fix it monitor your apps for unusual battery usage and limit the background activity of battery consuming apps
Good Night, some good soul to help me on the Mi A2 Lite, before upgrading to the Pie its battery lasted up to 40 hours, today it lasts no more than 4 hours / day, as I do a lot of use of the device I have to recharge it, it 02 or more times a day. Would anyone know of any solution to this? He is losing 3% of battery every 5 minutes, that is, in 1 hour he loses 36%, lasting at most 3 hours. The eight processor cores are constantly in 2016 Mhz, I no longer know what to do to try to solve the problem
Did you reset after the upgrade from Oreo to Pie? You might want to install AccuBattery to pinpoint the possible cause.

Maybe you have an app installed which had bad update recently. Track usage without installing any apps, just the clean os.

May I aware you about a fingerprint scanner bug that is supposed to be causing this issue. Are you having trouble with the fingerprint unlocking? I had an at some poit it showed a message as if the hardware was unavailable. Since I've hard reseted the phone, the scanner was back to life, but sometimes is simply doesn't unlock and I have to use the pin. Many users say that the fingerprint keeps persistently alive and using every core of the processor, causing battery drain. I do not have this problem, but maybe you would like to google it.

1st Download MIFlash Tool & Latest Stock ROM From MIUI Forum. Then Unlock Bootloader And Flash It With The Help Of IMFlash Tool.

In Addition To That 1sr Reset Your Mobile And Do Not Install Any App, Just Check Battery Performance. If Issue Still Exists Then Go Ahead For Above Mentioned Method. After Successfully Ported Stock ROM Then Just Check Battery Without Installing Any App. If Its Okay So Enjoy. If Battery Performance Doesn't Good Then You Should Have Changed The Unit Battery.

My smartphone is still under warranty, I contacted the store that sold me, they asked me to post it so that it could be analyzed, they suspect that it is a battery addicted, I doubt it very much, because in previous moments like I said, before the update to the torta it lasted almost a day and a half of charge without much use and with use it lasted all day, I'll send it, if you do not give me a solution, try the suggestions offered by you, regarding the digital sensor is not.
You could try this after the baterry is charged and with the charger still plugged in, keep vol and vol down plus power pressed for at least one min, all snapdragon cpus have this feature but whether xiaomi have messed with it who knows, supposed reset battery stats, after a around say 40/50 seconds wait for the longest power off cycle before you let go.
Good evening, after sending my Mi A2 Lite to the technical assistance came the first opinion that the battery was "swollen" and that they would replace it with a new one, as I researched, batteries addicted or "swollen" are not covered by the warranty of the phone what left me with a big doubt, is this even the problem of my smartphone ??? You maybe could try battery calibration, using an app from playstore
Batteries are not digital. 100% is a guess. If you get over 95% that's effectively full. It may not even charge from there to avoid overcharging the cells.
Bad batteries can happily report 100%, then quickly drop when you put load on them.
