This battery drain issue is really annoying. I have tried absolutely everything to fix it. Except unlocking bootloader and rooting. I shouldn't have to do that to get what the phone is capable of.
I sold my previous phone which was an Alcatel idol 3. Not a bad phone, just a little leggy. The battery in that phone was a 2900mAh, it lasted 2 days easy!!
This ZenFone 2 has better specs and a slightly bigger battery and I can't make it 10 hours, a lot of other users who also bought the phone have the same issues. Android OS battery drain.
I have 5 days before I can return the phone to the store ( I'll get charged a 10% restocking fee, which I should send the bill to ASUS)
Can anyone from ASUS tell me what's going on regarding a fix?? Update??
Would making a video about the issue help. ( I have access to some big name youtubers, phone reviewers) it might not help your sales though.
Thank you,
From a guy who feels himself and many others have wasted there money.

I have a feeling that you have a CN sku with WW rom... Am I correct?
I bought it from a store in Canada, I live in Canada, I know it's a ww Rom, what does the cn stand for
Are you running the latest firmware and are you using Google Fit at all?
Yeah running latest updates I'm not using Google fit
Do you still get a battery drain when you use a different launcher? Ie. Nova launcher?
Do you have SD card inserted? I can't use SD card since before mediascanner finishes (500 songs on SD), all battery is drained or phone crashes and gets stuck in bootloop ... Also the mediascan clogs I/O and phone is so unresponsive that I can't turn screen on once scan starts. Removed SD card and phone works again.
To help improve battery life please ensure to turn off 'Wifi Scanning always available.' To do this go to Apps/Settings/WiFi Settings/Advance Settings(menu in upper right corner)/Scanning always available/ turn Off. Please also see the following information showing 8 ways to extend the ZenFone 2 battery Life. http://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1012981/
Please also see the troubleshooting methods provided in a ZenUI app called ASUS Support/Assistance/Battery/Battery drains fast. If still no improvement with battery then we recommend updating the firmware to the latest version. After firmware is applied we recommend performing a hardware reset including wipe cache partition. For hardware reset/wipe cache partition instructions please see the following: http://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1011956/

I have the latest software, I'm waiting for the software fix which you guys need to provide.
I've done everything you suggested, already, nothing is working , its clearly a software bug.
What would make things easier, is if you just admitted there is a software bug, so people who have spent there hard earned money on your product would have some hope that a fix is in the works. Be honest and tell us.
My Asus phone is turned off as of today and in the box, I instead am using an Alcatel Idol 3, which is a joy to use, especially 2days battery life, with no Android OS battery drain!!
Not all Zenfone 2 have this issue. The one I am currently using can last for a few days on standby with firmware WW_2.19.40.22.
There was a new firmware released today WW_2.20.40.58

My ZenFone 2 heated up extremely a week ago while sitting on standby on my night stand. It has drained 75% in 7 hours. Since then the battery life is terrible. I am going to perform a radiotherapy and see if that helps. Most of the day I am using my 2 year old M7 which lasts the whole day with moderate to heavy usage. If the reservoirs not improve things I will contact Asus and see the next course of action. My phone is up to date as far as firmware is concerned.

He is right, though. Battery seems to be a mixed beg for some reason? My phone was fine in .20... Buuut I upgraded it anyways to ParanoidAndroid.
Just doing a factory reset on mine and it has been on (erasing) format least 5 minutes. Is this normal.

I would say that 30 minutes is asking time to be stuck on erasing.

Well, AI brought my phone to work last night and got it back into recovery and wiping status. It took about 45-50 minutes before it shut off. Then I powered it back on which brought it back to wiping. It hung there for a minute and the went to the set up screen. That is the longest I have even seen a phone perform a factory reset. Will go through the setup later. Thanks Frank for your long to how to do this.

I was having really bad battery drain. Flashed CM 12.1 on it and it's been amazing since. Scored 48273 in Antutu and battery is lasting forever. Unplugged at 6am this morning, it's 4pm now, been using it with full brightness all day, I'm a heavy user. 45% still left.

It's a shame that you have to flash different software just to be able to get full use of the phone.
The amount of bloatware that came with this phone is probably the worst I've ever seen!!

I am one of the unfortunate souls who is experiencing terrible battery life due to the AndroidOS bug. I feel like I spend half my waking hours trying to figure out what is causing it and doing different things to my phone improve my battery life.
I'm definitely getting sick of it and while I realize that Samsung/Sprint may eventually come out with a software update that fixes the problem, I'm not sure I'm willing to wait since it could take months (and the issue was supposedly fixed for GS2 phones in 2.3.4).
At this point, I'm considering going back to the Moto Photon--it's battery life is simply amazing. My only issue with the Moto is its unusable camera.
Anyone else getting as frustrated as I am and considering jumping ship to another phone?
What have you done to fix it?
Are you saying that you still have the bug even aftera factory reset ?
Why not just take it back and have them give you a new one since you obviously have a defective phone?
Also how many hours are you actually getting out of the battery?
I don't see any other phone worth switching to and I have had them all. Each with their own specific problem. But this one here is as good as it gets

I've tried just about everything that has been mentioned in the AndroidOS/battery life thread (reset, wifi, autosync) but I'm still getting only 12 hours of battery life on a good day, 8 hours on a bad day
I might try exchanging the phone, but I'm hesitant to do so due to the LOS bug (I have not experienced this with my phone as of yet).
Honestly, while I love the phone in many other ways, I'm about to throw the thing out the window since 8 hours of battery life is simply not acceptable to me

That doesn't mean anything to me. What's the display on time? How good/bad is the cellular signal?
Exchange it bro. Ive had two of these phones so far and none had this problem. I'm getting like 24-30 hours battery with like 4-5 hours screen on time. This phone had awesome battery. Download an apps called better battery stats. This will show wakelocks and processes that are draining the battery. Good luck man.

On a good day, the display is on for less than 30-45 min. On a bad day, the phone display time is somewhere between 90-120 minutes.
I pulled 16 hours ojt of my battery yesterday with over 12 on wifi and i was at 40 percent. I have to use wifi at work as i have no signal and when i do get signal its roaming. I would say that my conditions at work are far from ideal but this phone is great. My old phone would die before 1130(evo shift).

mine doesn't seem to get the android os bug unless i'm on a custom kernel. 1 week stock, no problems, 3 days on custom problems each day, back to stock + root and no problems for 48 hrs.
i still have to be 100% sure that my phone didn't like the kernel though so another test will be coming up after a few more days of observation.

I had the issue with the stock kernel and custom kernels. I'm just going to hold out until we can get a AOSP build and hope that using as little of Samsung's code fixes it.

I'm on stock and have nothing out of the ordinary installed. Out of curiosity, do you have a google account with full sync turned on?
Lol 8 12 hours isn't bad with a stock battery and 4.5 inch screen. If you are in a poor reception area it could be that. Otherwise you have alot of Apps running in the background.
My advice : root it and extended battery.

I average 15-20 hours easily on a charge, with a full sync google account
Everything Sync'd Listed below:
- Google+ Notifications
- Music
- Books
- Contacts
- Gmail
- Picasa Web Albums
- Calendar
If anything else can be Sync'd I have not run across it. I also have my Tapatalk set to notify me of PM's, and updates to Subscribed topics, I removed the accuweather widget because it only updates every 3 hours and installed Weatherbug Elite and set it to update every 30 minutes. On top of all that I browse the web regularly to visit sites that are websense'd at work, and I play dungeon hunter 2, and asphalt 6 on my lunch break. At home the phone sits on my desk until its time to pass out, only used for my Rift Mobile authenticator.
This is a real bug, with android
the system/0 process goes crazy and chews up the battery.
I get about 12 hours with everything disabled (other than gmail sync) and suspend/0 chews up battery
well documented here
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=16721
it's a gingerbread issue, if you haven't experienced on the galaxy, you will soon
I'm also considering returning this great phone with crappy software until google releases a version of android that works.
by that time there may be a new "best android phone"
Why does the bug seem to affect the gs2 more than other phones? For example, I've never seen it mentioned on the photon forums

i use my phone a lot while im at school throughout the day , i last using wifi and 3g, and if needed i can do a quick charge while i study in the car but i lasted to 60% using 3g for a few hours
I have had my Note 8 for a couple of months and just recently I have been having battery problems. I restored the Note 8 to factory settings (just to be sure) and am still having the same problem.
It seems that when I watch videos or play any games the battery depletes extremely quickly e.g Its 80%, I start to play the game and within 3-5 minutes the battery is 30%. I play again and its 5% and the screen dims (which is also a pain in the ....) I realise that Games and Apps use a lot of power but surely not this much.
I have looked around for battery calibration instructions and apps but are a bit dubious to try them as I have read that you can deplete the battery totally and the device then wont charge.
Just wondered if anybody else has had the same problem.
Thanks.
My note has a great battery life. For this situation I would look in the battery menu for any apps not closing correctly thus sucking battery. Remember to dis activate GPS, Bluetooth and data when not using them. Check the screen brightness is 50% or less. Automatic brightness should be fine also.
here's a lot of info related to batteries. I'm sure you will find it usefull

Don't waste time with calibration. Sounds like the battery ifs failing or dying, either way it's bad.

I usually have Bluetooth and GPS turned off and have the screen on Auto Brightness. I also restored to factory and the problem still persists.
One strange thing is that when I charge it from 10% it takes about 50 minutes to get to 100%. I thought that was a bit quick. The battery must be reporting the wrong charge to the OS. I wish they had user replaceable batteries in this thing although its probably not practical.
I will give Samsung a call. Cannot beleive it has happened now as I am off on holiday soon to the US and wanted to use it there.
Thanks.

same with me chas0001, and JCUK89, my situation is actually identical to chas0001, but my device is like a mth old now, i received it on august 5th 2013,

I called Amazon.co.uk (where I bought it from) and they agreed to replace it for me. Its was definitely faulty and unusable. I kept reading about people with the similar problems and so eventually decided to not get a replacement but a refund.
Its a shame really. I really liked the device but I need something more reliable. I also don't care for Samsung with their constantly delayed OS updates. 4.1.2 for a 'flagship' device. Surely if they get rid of that Touchwiz crap they can release timely updates. You never know even my Note 2 may get an OS update this year!

My note 4 battery is draining rapidly after the lollipop update. I've read that some have had to do a factory reset and that has resolved the issue but (and forgive me for asking) doesn't that wipe everything from your phone? There has to be a better way. On kitkat I was seeing 5-6.5 hours of screen time. Now on lollipop I get about 4-4.5 Hours. I have done a clean factory install and wiped the cache. Android system is always at the top for me as well and it wasn't with kitkat. I actually have less apps and data on my phone now than I did on kitKat because I wiped everything. Ive been using lollipop for about a week now. This is obviously an issue within lollipop itself. I have mirrored the same settings that i had in kitkat, disabled as many useless apps and files that i can, and I'm using it exactly as I was on kitkat. Can someone just root this phone already?! PLEASE? (I won't hold my breath lol)

I noticed that just by changing that setting I get two days easy on one charge, please note that when I say two days I'm not on my phone all the time, typically I pull my phone out at work for demo purposes, I'm browsing the Internet on down time, I'm streaming music on my drive home or I'm texting or playing a simple game. Anyways, not sure why the enhanced services drains battery so badly but after I turned it off on kk and updated it was back on and I had horrible battery life, was gonna factory reset but then checked this and it was on again so now I'm back up to two days on a charge.
My first day running Lollipop I got around 5.5 hrs SOT and phone was on for more than 13 hrs and still had about 12% so I'm getting around the same battery life on heavy usage that I had on Kit Kat. I'm having no issues with Lollipop as of now. Before I downloaded Lollipop I moved all my important files to my SD card and then I updated. Right after the update, I went into recovery, cleared the cache and factory reset within recovery. I've had a very smooth experience ever since.

I have found a fix that has worked for me without resetting. I cleared my cache partition and now I'm back to almost as good as it was. Not quite 100%, but it's a drastic improvement. I'd suggest trying this before doing a factory reset. It worked for me.
And FYI, I tried waiting for as long as I could stand it and it didn't get even a little better.

No question about the Enhanced 4G LTE setting. I was already getting at least as good and probably marginally better battery life after 5.01. Turning off enhanced 4G services has given even much better battery life. Just as others have seen, Android system has dropped in usage. In fact it is amazing how long this phone can now go between charges.
After a week of 5.0.1 (see nothing difference of the interface cause ATT made it). I have to switch back to 4.4 for some of the features missing/not support and i got back my best battery life. It's ok in 5.0.1 but 4.4 battery is best.
In 5.0.1 i got around 3h screen time and it's drain faster.

I went through this issue with my first S6. Re-root and download better battery stats - or CPU Spy. See if your phone is going into deep sleep. Mine was constantly kept awake by lli_pm_wlock. I couldn't find ANY information about it on the internet - but it was keeping the cores active and burning through battery like crazy. It would occasionally enter deep sleep, but only for a few minutes at a time.
I ended up returning the phone and getting my new S6 Edge. I tried everything - factory resets, flashing stock firmware via Odin, basically everything possible without tripping KNOX with a custom kernel.
My battery life has been awful. Specially after rooting with Ping Pong and specifically last night. 100% at 10PM, and at 11AM with 58 minutes of on screen time, the battery was at 13%. That is just horrible. Worst battery life I have ever gotten out of the phone.
Pains me to say it, but if the battery doesn't improve by unrooting it, and waiting for a future update to 5.1, I'll most likely change to a LG G4.

If you have it rooted install Better Battery Stats and figure out the problem. If it's a wakelock, the problem is it's just not going to sleep. Something is keeping the CPU active even when the screen is off and nothing is going on. It's a common problem on the rooted phones - but usually PingPong Root doesn't have the issue. Enter recovery (turn off - then power, vol up, home at the same time) and clear the cache. Reboot and run BBS for a while.

It's been really difficult for me to try to drain my phone to see my average screen on time.
But is this normal? I'm not sure what is a decent Deep Sleep percentage.
Btw: This is after I unrooted without factory reset.

Yea we're having very similar issues. I would try the G4, but the Edge is too beautiful!! This is the first time I've gotten a phone so soon after release, so I'm probably gonna stick it out for a month or 2 and wait for bug fixes.

So I purposely didn't charge it last night, and you can tell it has really really bad standby time.

Try disabling WiFi or set it to keep it on only when plugged in.

That is not normal. Backup your data and flash stock firmware with SmartSwitch then restore what you want. See if that makes your battery last any longer.

I had horrible battery life when I got it out of box. It wouldn't last more than 5 hrs with very little use. After I flashed stock firmware with SmartSwitch, Battery+ RAM Usage issue got solved. Now I get whole day with single charge. I take my phone out from charger by 7 AM and by the time 10 PM in night, Phone would still have 35-40% battery left. I get many emails [50+], 2hrs of GPS+Music streaming + random facebook & Instagram and even after this, I get good battery life. So I would 1000% recommend that you do a flash stock firmware with SmartSwitch.

I tried using SmartSwitch and unfortunately, battery life was only a tiny bit better. However, I started getting a bunch of force closes, and the phone became laggier than before. I would try it again, but it's so much work resetting up my phone! ...especially without root.
So I ordered the G4. Hopefully I'll be getting the Note 5 in a few months .
I got my HTC 10 about 7 month ago and I was really happy with it until three or four days ago that I have no idea why my phone started to drain drastically even when I'm not using it at all.
I'm not a heavy user, I have never even installed a game.
I repeat, I was completely satisfied with the battery.
Most of days I used it for 2 days and still having 10 % remaining.
Until 3 or 4 days ago I noticed that my phone is draining way too much rapidly.
I did everything that I could think of but nothing got better.
Yesterday I reset factory the phone, and just installed less than 10 essential apps (I used to have more than 50 apps on my phone before this) and I have restricted their access to network.
Last night I fully charged it and shut everything off. No Wi-Fi, no data, no nothing. Even I turned on the power saving mode. When I got up in the morning the battery percentage was 28% while my phone used to use less than 5% during nights.
I checked battery usage details and the results were shocking:
Android OS 55%
Android system 24%
Phone idle 11%
Only 1 app had used the battery and it was:
Telegram 1%
What should I do?
This change hasn't been gradually so I'd say "okay my phone is used out and old! "
This change "just" happened. I have no idea why.
Please someone give me some advice.

That doesn't sound right at all. I had a similar experience recently and sent it for repair, it's possible it's hardware related. Is quick charge working ?
Mine was apparently due to a corrupted OS which is odd as I did 2 factory resets and 3 ruu's prior to sending it back. It's fine now but I don't understand why the ruu didn't fix the corrupt OS.
I assumed mine was hardware related and possibly due to faulty usb port as quick charge didn't work consistently, but apparently not. Sorry to not be much help but you could try an ruu which would be more thorough than a reset ( it's quite straightforward if you find the right one for your device )

Thank you for your reply.
The strangest of all is that everything JUST happened !
I mean no gradual change !
I love HTC but I'm deeply disappointed right now.
Have you tried factory reset ? If your phone is in warranty visit a nearby service center and if your phone is rooted install BBS and post dumpfile.

In his OP he says he did a factory reset.
-----
I would download accubattery app and see where your battery is at. I bought my device when it came out and I'm down to 81% unfortunately now.
Are you rooted, S-OFF or anything like that?
I would run a full wipe RUU

Gsam would most likely be the better option to see what exactly is the thing causing the battery drain

Better?
Who's to say.
No reason both can't be used.
OP does say "I checked battery usage details and the results were shocking:

Which is why I suggest to see the battery health.
