It is not worth rooting to only have 80% Battery life. I did the root, but will be going back to stock. I cant live with my battery at that level.
I was about to take the plunge but after seeing so many reports with 80% charging level, then I'm staying put till that gets sorted out. Thanks for update :good:
Why cant some one do on the fly kernel patching list on Linux see here
https://blog.selectel.com/live-kernel-patching-modern-tools/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ksplice
http://phrack.org/issues/58/7.html#article
Shouldn't this be able to be applied to android and fix the charging issue.
cant they then use this to change the some other thing like the verity key so we can flash other things.
can the also be used to help unlock the boot loader or be able to flash or bypass anything thing

I am going back because I see no benefit of root other than debloating to save my battery when I am hobbled at 80% as it stands now. I will wait until it gets sorted out.

You can use Package Disabler Pro from the Play Store to disable all the bloat, no need for root. Getting excellent battery with quite a few services disabled.
You can charge it to 100% in upload (not download) mode. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73619880&postcount=2399

Looks like user error to me. There are a lot of times that your phone is awake and the screen isn't even on. Your apps are what is killing your battery life.

most people get between 4-5 hrs of screen ON time, this has nothing to do with ur gnex, it's related to an app u have, try to locate it and uninstall, or mail the developer about the issues u're getting with it.
you have bad signal and your apps are keeping the phone awake.
You can't seriously blame the phone for what is user error.
Your apps are what's causing the massive drain and unless you do away with the apps causing this drain, your battery life will always seem crap. I suggest you uninstall KTREweather and find a weather app/widget that's more reliable.
I take it it's this app you're using? https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sMSwxLDEsImNvbS5rdHJlLmFuZHJvaWQud2VhdGhlciJd
Judging by its features, I'm not suprised it kills your battery. Live radar and storm tracking? Who needs that?
You have serious drain from awake apps, and looks like you're doing a lot of streaming radio/music? And your signal is absolutely terrible. All of these together will absolutely drain your battery.

generally, i dont let anything run on my phone that i dont want it to run. if you have root, there is a good app called autostarts that lets pick what app you want to start up when the phone boots. only when you actually open that app itll start up https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.elsdoerfer.android.autostarts&hl=en

Tbh I let Android do all of the app management. I also only install apps that I'm going to use as well as keeping them running to a minimum in the background.

Why do people keep saying this ****? Get apps that don't eat your battery. Until then, don't try to claim someone else is wrong.

It's part of the Clean Master app that came preinstalled. I'm not sure if it's bogus or not, but it claims that it regulates the charge cycle so that you don't overcharge your battery. If that's true, I don't want to disable it, since that's a nice feature, but I certainly don't want these godawful ads every time I unlock my phone while it's charging.

Cleanmaster is little better than adware...one of the first things I did was uninstall it. It hurts your battery life as well. Use the ram cleaning tool asus provides instead. Also...ASUS should know better than do force that crapware on us, however if it is the only way they are making money on the phone....

Does the charge manager do anything? It claims that it boostcharges to 80%, then normal to 100%, then trickle charges to keep the phone charged without overdoing it. Is that all a load of BS? I'm really hoping it is, cause this is awful.

That's exactly what the charger does by itself. Basically you're letting them show you ads in exchange for showing you what the charger is doing. Feel free to uninstall Cleanmaster and freeze the app, it won't harm your battery health at all. You can still use Asus' RAM clearer with Cleanmaster frozen.

As he said. This is done by every charger on every damn phone. Nothing the app can do. Stupid scareware tactics. They could even get sued for such claims.. if someone bothered to file a lawsuit that is
cleanmaster just can be useful to clean junk..other than that, its a crapware..i removed it since the first day i bought my zf2..
Just swipe the ad to the left and it will close. Ads haven't shown up after I've done that.
It appears all the Chinese care about anymore is loading their phones with junk, ads, spyware, malware anymore. It's sickening. My Lenovo K3 note even came with Trojans on it, according to malwarebytes.
Can anyone help, I am getting a similar issue on my Galaxy Note 4 and it is killing my phone!!! It looks a bit different to this 1 (I don't know how to post a picture on here?)
My phone is now Really slow, all the time! Unlocking the phone is also a torture as I have to swipe away this charging/lock/add screen then get my security screen and enter it before my screen times out and goes black. As my phone is slow u can imagine this is a torture!
I have tried to find the app and can't find it anywhere. I know all the apps that show up in app manafer and it's none of them. Unless it is hidden within an app or somewhere in my OS now? I have tried multiple anti-virus/malware apps and none of them find a problem.
How to I find it and get rid of it? Please help!
Thanks

Hello everyone,
I am a returning Android user - just got my G4 last week. I've had everything from the original droid to the iPhone 6. I have been away from Android for a while before coming back to the G4. So far I really like it (thought it is a bit laggy at times compared to the iPhone).
Will rooting help with this issue? Besides gaining root so that I can freeze stupid apps, are there any other current benefits to rooting this model? My understanding is that very few if any stable ROMs are available?
I have the Verizon version. I'm running 5.1. The kernel is 3.10.49-g8555e66. Software version is J14.LGE.VS896.0
So - is this one rootable? If so, what can I do? If I can flash ROMs, how difficult is it since from what I hear, the bootloader remains locked?
Thanks! (i'm sorry if these questions have been answered - i actually have been searching for the answer to no avail. I always worry a bit when I see a 'how-to-root' that is from a few months ago...makes me wonder if maybe mine is updated to the point where it's not possible). So I thought Id ask!
Peace,
Tommy

Ive installed CTT mod and can say for my Taiwan model ive gained at leaset 2 more hours of SOT and phone is much cooler when video or gaming.
So rooting is needed just to gain these benifits and many others.
Only drawback is you wont be able to OTA once rooted so if thats important then dont.

Thanks everyone. The more I think about it, I think i'm gonna be fine without root. I want to be able to get the latest OTAs and do not think that the ability to freeze a few apps is worth sacrificing that. Also - after a few days, my phone is performing very well and the battery life is phenomenal. I bought a kit with two other batteries and i haven't needed to put even the first replacement in today. Been off charger since 7am and i'm at 48% right now at 8:25pm. I think i can be happy with it the way it is. THank you for your helpful responses.

First semi reliable info! Let the countdown begin!
This is when the international versions will begin to receive the update. Look for AT&T (and the other carriers) to hold that update at least 3 to 6 months extra to add their bloat.

That's quite a broad question but I'll try to give you details. I've disabled anything I don't use or that I know cause battery drain. There are several apps in the app manager that aren't "useable" apps, and they aren't in the app drawer, but cause significant battery drain - disabled without negative results. I switch between touchwiz and Nova Prime launchers (and have noticed no difference in battery drain). I keep things like wifi and Bluetooth disabled if I'm not using them. Auto brightness turned off. I keep location on but only on power saving mode unless I'm traveling out if town.
That's generally it, I guess...

It's a long list. It was easier to just screenshot them. In the bottom two you can see my battery stats. I unplugged this morning around 7:15 AM and I'm down to about 47% after 8 hours and 3.5 hours screen-on time.
Today, I've checked email several times, had several phone calls, plus I've streamed youtube to a chromecast for classes that I teach, and even played a couple games during lunch. I do have lots of other apps I use, too; about 4-5 pages worth in my app drawer. Working well for me.

Kies is one way, but it sometimes takes Kies a while to get the carrier-branded firmwares. (International firmware is almost instant on the other hand).
The fastest 2 ways to get the update would be to
1) use someone's activated ATT sim in your phone. Pop it in, boot up the phone, wait a few minutes for the sim to set itself up with your phone, then check for updates. Then download, install, and then put your original sim back in.
2) Use an Odin file. The only issue with this is that you most likely will have to start from scratch with your apps and settings. Be sure to back everything up first.
You'll also have to wait for the Odin files to be released by someone, but it'll be 100x sooner than Kies.
Edit: The latest 5.1.1 Odin files are in the first post here (you'll need all 4 files in the Dropbox link):

My web browser updated last night. Looks like what's on the 6.0+ devices.
Why? I have restricted all apps I can, still drain very fast....
In my opinion this is a thing that has been on Android (and sometimes Windows and iOS) phones since day 1. Specifically that some people randomly get very poor battery, especially standby battery, which most people are fine. It's a problem with a huge number of unknown causes and few solutions. My recommendation is always - do a hard full system wipe. The three or four times it's happened to me, this was the solution.
With the lack of information you gave there are so many reasons your phone's battery could be sucking now. I suggest doing some research and digging through XDA or some other nerdy site. I don't mean this to sound bad, but figure it out on your own. If you find something that works, share it here.
I went from 4h SOT to 2h SOT after the update same or less usage
Are u rooted? Without root it's pretty hard to do much. First thing u need is data. Find out what is using too much batt. You can use the battery section in settings to get clues. If u have root you can get even more info/data. Once u find the app or process responsible then u can drop the hammer on it.

Try a clean flash using PixelFlasher or the Android Flash Tool through Chrome browser and skipping the initial setup guide. (Old backups can cause problems). Once your Pixel is running then you can set your apps up!
