Hello guys,
Ive been playing with my mi6 for a while and noticed a strange thing. Photos captured at 2x look actually more like a digital zoom than an optical, even though the resolution is the same as 1x. When you actually cover the left camera lens, the picture is still normal. No matter if you choose 1x or 2x.
Any ideas?

Where can you change that? Still on MIUI8.
it does that in low light shots, cause the tele lens is so bad at low light that it prefers to shot in main camera and zoom it in.

That's right, the telephoto sensor has 1.00µm pixel size at f/2.6 aperture, while the main sensor has 1.25µm pixel size at f/1.8 aperture.

Everyone knows the weakness behind our Back Camera.. but does everyone know how POWERFUL our front facing camera is? I bet you didn't know you can crank the ISO to 12446 on the front facing camera
You can now take selfies in almost pitch black rooms (and come out grainy, but visible).
Inside the "Selfie" mode, click on EV +2 and go into a dark room.
Your image will automatically being super grainy but you'll be able to see yourself like no other!

Yes...it's weird it only works on front camera and not on regular one...but yeah! Takes photos on pitch black room
Does anyone know if the rear facing camera has an IR filter on it? That may explain this, because if the rear facing camera has a filter but the selfie one does not, the selfie camera will let in more "light", and use ambient IR to illuminate your face slightly more. That's just my best guess.

The reason you can do this with the front is because the camera used is exactly the 4UP sensor from the M8 which has larger pixels for better low light performance

Lot of reviewers are saying it doesn't have any effect on low light photos
2nd lens is for taking pictures when light level is below 10 lux, for portrait mode and for autofocusing.
But in reality, the mechanism involved for taking low light pics is kind of useless and the end result is gimmicky and useless.

one is collecting depth data the other is photo
also the portrait mode is limited to a distance where there is focusing contrast

Yep it's basically useless lens. Cheap way to make it more attractive for noobs
It's low light camera. I can definetly see them switch sometimes.
Also has a wider FOV (i don't know why), look at 1080p 60. Although i think that is without the EIS cut-in.
Also the bokeh effect can be done by having one focus near (at face) and one focus far (at landscape), and the bits in focus at far are blurred more. It is basically software, but with two lenses it can be better.
Greetings Just got my hand on a LG G8S here in Norway and I'm pretty happy so far. I started exploring the (three) cameras and noticed today, that if I covered the tele-lens, it did not make any difference. Activating the zoom mode (big tree icon) still provided an image, showing that it was just using a digital zoom on the main lens. Wide lens works fine however.
I also noticed, in manual mode, I could not activate the tele mode at all. Seeing also that the aparture did not match the tele one witch should be f/2.4.
Could it be that I have a G8 firmware, which only supports two cameras?

Try This.
Guess this scenario is been discussed and tested on other LG triple camera phones with Telephoto lens.
G8s telephoto lens with F2.6 needs good light to work, in poor lighting it switches back to the main/standard lens and offer digital Zoom.
Try outdoors with good lighting,switch to tele lens and then cover this lens with your finger.
Not sure why the software has to decide which lens to choose, May be this is the so called AI camera feature

Hey, if you want to force the use of the telelens lens long press the little tree button, and it will show a live mini-preview of each lens. Choose the tele view and take the picture. You'll notice the difference in the quality and stability of the preview opposed to when you try to scroll smooth past 1.9x zoom.
But you won't be able to do anything else but snap the shot.
As soon as you click in something out of this preview option, whether to adjust exposure or anything, you'll notice you'll leave the telelens to the main sensor 2x digital
It's not ideal, but Works... Looks like a.... Bug?
Know this has been dead for a while but I investigated this and it bases the lens selection on focus distance and light availability. If you try to use the tele lens on close up subjects it will auto select the main sensor. If used for shooting more generally the tele lens is selected. I imagine light availability makes a difference too. I wish it wasn't blocked in manual camera mode though.

I've been playing around with my phone and while trying to cover the lenses one by one and changing camera mode, this is what I found :
The main middle camera Is the 32mp one and I can cover it when taking normal pictures
The zoomed out camera (I don't remember the technical name) is the top one
I then tried the 3d function of Google measure but it still uses the middle one
So any idea about what the bottom camera is for?

This is incorrect.
It is in fact the bottom camera, ie the one directly above the flash, that does the Ultra Wide photography.
The one in the middle is the high resolution, normal camera with 32 MP.
The top camera, ie closest to the edge of the phone, does depth measuring. This has a low resolution but has the same zoom percentage as the high resolution camera. It has 5MP.

Looks I will be getting bigger higher refresh screen (pro) which is curved (con) and with worse battery life.
One thing that is not clear to me - is the zoom lens used in any other situations than when actively selecting it? For example - which of the lenses is being used when you select the portrait mode in the camera app? Is it using the telephoto lens to battle the fish eye effect?

I have never gotten the telephoto lens to show up in gcam. Only the 50MP wide cam and the 12MP ultra wide cam. The 50 gives you zoom options but the 48MP telephoto never shows up

It's a 4x telephoto, which is a lot for portraits (so portraits are taken using main camera at 2x magnification).
No, it's not being used for enhancing ultrawide. I suppose it's also because if the same reason mentioned above (OnePlus uses it's 2x tele for this as well).
Telephoto is really only useful for zooming 4x and up all the way to 20x, when photos are still kinda useful (depending on a scenario), thanks to being a 50 MP sensor and some Google's AI magic.
I take a lot of zoomed pictures and I don't mind curved display. Battery is okay, 6 hours of SOT are real for me, usually on social networks and news scrolling. Sometimes I play a League of Legends, than it will drop to 4-5 hours.
Zoom lens is for... zooming in. I would think that would be self-explanatory?
It kicks in when the magnification reaches about 4.5x. Switching between sensors is exclusively a matter of changing the magnification level, not by "selecting" a particular camera. There are other details considered before switching sensors, such as exposure requirements.
You can tell which sensor is in use by briefly blocking sensors with your finger. When you see your finger on the screen, you found the sensor that is in use.

Looks like this is not the case.
I will stick with my vanilla 6 then, not missing out on much, subjectively.

Portrait photos can be made with ANY lens, depending on the distance and direction to the subject(s).

Is it so? How does the portrait UI looks on Pixel 6 Pro? On the vanilla pixel I have the options to shoot it in 1x and 2x only. Does the pro version offer a higher magnification, using the zoom lens instead of main one?

No. 1x and 2x are the only options available. The telephoto lens isn't used in portrait mode.
