Backup from MIUI and restore to another ROM without root - Xiaomi Mi Max Questions & Answers

So in short what I want is to backup and restore all my appdata / files from stock MIUI 8 Global build to Lineage OS. I have already got permission to unlock bootloader and I don't want to root my phone.
I already tried Helium but that's so buggy and doesn't work well and if anything it doesn't work at all.
I kinda run out of options here and is there anything I should know if I'm flashing to Lineage OS?

You can't, mi backup is something else. It can only be used in miui rom.

[Q] Backup done, ready for root?

Hi. I backed up my phone using the backup method found here: http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/28296/full-backup-of-non-rooted-devices
This method uses CMD and creates an android backup file (.ab) I want to unlock my bootloader and add the custom clockwork recovery. Of course unlocking the bootloader wipes everything. So if i were to restore everything with the .ab file, then do the custom recovey with the superuser thing, would that give me root, and would all of my apps and data be restored as they are right now?
Probably a stupid question, but i want to be completely 100% sure i won't mess up my phone. I know its going to void warranty, which would be a problem if i dropped it of course
Thanks
It should work yes, you can also backup apps with an app called carbon. Free in the playstore.
Then unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery and make a backup of the stock rom in there right away too (needed when you want to go back to full stock for future updates) its called a nandroid backup.
Then root it and restore, or install a brand new custom already rooted rom
Thanks a lot
If it was a custom rom i chose to install, will it still restore? or would it need to be the original stock for the restore to work properly?

Afaik know you can restore apps on any rom with carbon. Watch out with restoring system data, it can crash the rom.
Because some custom roms have more changes and if you restore system parts it will break the rom. But apps should not be a problem. The most important thing is that you do a nandroid backup of the stock rom. The rest is easy to setup new in the worst case.
Brilliant. Thanks for the help, much apreciated.
Was half expecting an answer like that, i think i will give root stock a go, then probably when HTC stop updating i will be very tempted to give a custom a go.
Cheers
I have unlocked the bootloader, i think i have flashed the recovery, downloaded nandroid and still says i need root, so i downloaded the superuser thing and when i try to install the binary thing it says there is an error. Anything i can do?
Update: I have learnt Its all good now.
Good mate ! Have fun with your rooted phone

Backup

Hey there!
I have a question? What's the best option for backing up my whole device? I want to flash CM 12.1 but I need TWRP for that, and for TWRP, I need to unlock my bootloader, which (according to people here) means to wipe my data and apps.
If I use the Backup app pre installed in my phone, will I be able to restore if say... I re-flash my stock ASUS ZenUI ROM again?

Yes you can restore from the backup using the stock Asus backup app if you decide to go back too stock. If you stick with cm12.1 then I would use titanium backup from the play store to backup and restore apps from a custom rom. However titanium backup also works with the stock rom but if it restores stock apps on a custom rom they will likely crash like mad.
Fun note when I unlocked my bootloader using the unofficial method it didn't wipe my data so I didn't need to restore any app backups. As always backup anything you might need just in case something goes wrong and you need to restore anything.
Pro tip, when doing backups on a phone like that zenfone 2 if you can backup to a removable sdcard cause if something goes wrong and you cant power on your phone you will always be able to access the backups using a sdcard reader.

How to restore to stock version(stock recovery and stock eui) without losing IMEI?

Hi,
I have custom ROM installed, I need to know the exact steps to restore the phone as it was stock with recovery and stock MIUI OS.
like do I need to flash stock recovery first, then flash MIUI OS or few other steps to make sure I should not lose my IMEIs ?
Thanks
Technically you won't loose IMEI by flashing roms unless you goof up. You can flash MIUI on any recovery and don't forget to backup your data. I would recommend not using MI Recovery because MIUI ROMs have reached EOL for this device and you might want to try something else soon. There's also a fix to restore IMEI here https://www.gizdev.com/repair-imei-snapdragon-device/

Possible to restore OOS twrp data backup on Custom Roms?

Hey all!
I'm currently on stock OOS 9.0.6 with unlocked BL.
I searched through the Q&A but couldn't find one with a similar question so making a new thread.
(Apologies if it's a duplicate, please direct me to an answer )
So I'm looking to install a custom rom (non-OOS) on my 5T but without having to go through the painful process of setting up all apps again if possible.
If I do a TWRP backup of /data (not media) from stock OOS 9, can I restore it on other custom Pie roms? Will it work as expected?
Do I need a particular TWRP for this?
Or is it better to do a Titanium Backup of all Apps and then restore it on custom roms?
Really appreciate your inputs!
You can't restore ,it will not boot , better use titanium or swift backup or migrate choice is yours

What TWRP are people using for curtana?

Hi all, I'm currently running miui EU rom 11.0.11 with bootloader unlocked and TWRP installed. However there are so many different twrp recoveries available all with different things working....
So far I've only flashed one rom since I've got the phone but with all these amazing looking custom ROMs around, I'd like to try out a few but it seems backup and restore is currently not possible.
TLDR: anyone know of a TWRP with working backup for Xiaomi redmi note 9s CURTANA?
Cheers

You should use the latest recovery version available, I think now is the OrangeFox recovery, it's the unified (miatoll) version. To can make backup, the recovery need to able to handle the encryption installed by ROM. To restore the backup... another challenge. I using only data backup and when want to restore, I wipe data, flash the rom, wait for first boot (set same pin code as used in backup), than restore the data in recovery. In case of unlucky situation (encryption difference between "restored" and previous rom, the rom stuck at first boot and need to format data partition (will delete internal storage too!!).
I use ofox recovery, having stock rom in an sd card and migrate backup I just flash new rom and when I want to come back, I flash stock and restore migrate. Nandroid backups are a bit risky I think.
