I'm thinking of ditching the Pixel and Nougat to go back to the Moto X Pure phone with Marshmallow ROM's and Xposed.
I really, really miss my old Moto X Pure with it's minimal bezels, louder speakers and better vibration, etc.
I'll need to use it on Fi though, since I'm locked into my plan a while longer thanks to financing.
The Moto X Pure works on Fi for everything but Sprint and WiFi calling.
But I don't remember ever seeing my Pixel use Sprint before. It's always on T-Mobile. I'm in north Austin, TX.
And I don't make calls much, so WiFi calling isn't important to me.
Have you ever seen your phone with Fi jump onto Sprint before?

My Pixel XL w/ Fi is on Sprint maybe 10% of the time, I'm near Chicago so both networks are everywhere but the phone definitely prefers TMO. Traveling it still uses TMO more. I use Signal Check Lite. Ironically now at home it's on Sprint where usually it's strictly TMO.

When I first got Project Fi the service strongly preferred Sprint and I had to manually change networks sometimes because it would stay on Sprint even when the signal was bad. Now it's on T-Mobile 90% of the time and Sprint 10% of the time. Does everything work Ok with your Moto? I've read that some people have problems with text messaging or voicemail if they use Fi with a non-Google phone.
Before I went to Verizon from fi, my 5x and pixel both strongly preferred Sprint. I would have to force it to T-Mobile and us-cellular all the time.
Middle, ga
Mostly T-Mobile 70/30 give or take.

not my experience but my coworkers, he's 100% tmobile unless he goes out of town then he will switch to sprint where tmobile lacks coverage.
Sprint is terrible in El Paso, TX. Where we work there's a tmo tower less than 500ft away from us so that's why he's always Tmobile.
One thing I've noticed about Project Fi, Sprint and the Pixel XL is that the Sprint signal is pretty lousy compared to the one I got when I actually had Sprint and a dedicated CDMA phone. I had Sprint for years and I always had full bars almost everywhere in the city. With the Pixel XL and Project Fi if my phone is on Sprint I don't know that I've ever had full bars. I know there's nothing wrong with the Sprint network where I live but my Pixel gets a much stronger signal from T-Mobile.

I was on Project Fi with my Nexus 6P and thought the service was fantastic. I'm not really having the same experience with the Pixel XL. For some reason the network switching doesn't seem to work nearly as well. This morning I was on a network with no bars for more than an hour and the phone never changed networks. I had to manually switch from Sprint to T-Mobile and then I went from zero bars to full network strength. Project Fi support hasn't been helpful at all. I'm curious if other people are having problems with Project Fi on this phone.

Nope. However, it hasn't happened on the O Preview 2.

That's good. Unfortunately, running O Preview 2 did nothing to solve my issue. Project Fi tech support just emailed me a bunch of tests to perform which seem utterly pointless and in no way related to my problem.
I moved to Austin Texas right after I purchased the phone and experienced the same problem. I thought it had to do with TMobile or Sprint, but it actually has more to do with the stock firmware. Install a Lineage OS-based ROM. I no longer have any connectivity issues with the phone. I'm using CrDroid from this forum, everything is working really well.
That's interesting. I'm not sure I'm ready to flash a ROM on this phone yet given all the problems people seem to have with TWRP, flashing, root breaking and the dual partitions. But I was running Dirty Unicorn rather than stock on the 6P. I suppose it's possible that could partly account for why Fi worked much better on that phone. Still, since Fi is Google's own service it doesn't make much sense that it would run better on a custom ROM than stock.

You had a single error of network switching and you think that it's a trend? Have you ever considered the possibility that a carrier had a network outage at this time? For more than an hour?
CRAZY.
Do you know what happened to me? I got a brand new Pixel XL/FI and it wouldn't connect to the T-Mob network for about 24 hours. Out of the box, I couldn't use the phone. You know what happened afterwards. They fixed their network.
It isn't a single error--it's been a consistent problem for as long as I've had this phone. I'll be driving and my bars go down to nothing and the network never switches. I'll be in my doctor's office and have no bars and the network never switches. I'll be in a restaurant and have no bars and the network never switches. Project Fi on the Pixel is easily the worst phone service I have ever had. It seems like I have no bars nearly as much as I have actual phone service.
The weird thing is that when I have no bars the phone is always on the Sprint network. I was a Virgin Mobile customer for years. Virgin Mobile uses the Sprint network and I never had a situation anywhere in Chicago where I didn't have Sprint service. But Virgin Mobile uses CDMA phones. The Google Pixel is trying to switch between CDMA (Sprint) and GSM (T-Mobile) networks on the same radio, which I'm guessing is causing the difference in network quality I'm getting on Sprint between Virgin Mobile and Project Fi. The Virgin Mobile phones were a hell of a lot cheaper than the Google Pixel but they picked up a strong Sprint signal everywhere. It doesn't seem like the radio in my Pixel is working anything like Google promises.

You'll be driving, and your bars go down to nothing, and the network never switches - maybe because there's nothing to switch to in the middle of nowhere?
You'll be in your doctor's office, and your bars go down to nothing, and the network never switches - maybe because there's nothing to switch to inside a concrete building?
" The Google Pixel is trying to switch between CDMA (Sprint) and GSM (T-Mobile) networks on the same radio, which I'm guessing is causing the difference in network quality I'm getting on Sprint between Virgin Mobile and Project Fi."
This makes zero sense. You think that your Pixel phone has bad "radio" reception because it uses "the same radio" to receive both Sprint and T-Mobile signals, as opposed to a dedicated "radio" in your Virgin Mobile phone? CDMA and GSM radios don't use the same circuitry inside your phone, they are usually two different chips which are completely independent.
My FI straight up doesn't work sometimes when it's on T-Mob for some unknown reason - USC has easily the strongest service in my town. But when I lose signal, the phone probably switches to a T-Mob because it's the next thing in line. This happens once every 2-3 months.
Look, Project FI is not perfect. I've had a fair share of problems with it. But it isn't because the hardware in your Pixel phone is inferior. It's buggy as **** and it's cheap as dirt (for a low data user.) I've said it from day one. Just hope that Google fixes the bugs, or just get rid of it.

I'm not in the middle of nowhere--I'm in the middle of freaking Chicago. I also had Project Fi previously with my Nexus 6P, went to the same places and never had the problem of no bars or the network not switching. Why in God's name do people like you feel the need to post snide and ignorant comments when you clearly have nothing even remotely helpful or constructive to say? All you want to do is be sarcastic and pretend that you are smarter than everybody else. Waste someone else's time please. I'm sick of reading the garbage that you are posting.
Project Fi support has acknowledged that the service isn't working the way that it's supposed to on this phone. Hopefully that will shut up the idiot who keeps trying to argue that nothing is wrong. They are sending me a new sim card. If that doesn't fix the problem they are going to replace the phone. I started this thread because I wanted to find out if there was a problem with my device or if the Pixel XL just didn't work that well with the Project Fi service. Unfortunately I didn't really get an answer.

OP, you are not crazy. I had the same issues with stock ROM, all versions. I used signal spy and rooted to have control over switching. I had problems with both Sprint and T-Mo, but when I manually changed carrier, I got a full signal. It seemed to happen more when I was leaving a WiFi connection, but that may have been coincidence. Since I have switched to Pure Nexus I have had no problem at all. Don't know what the difference is, but I like that my phone works as advertised.

If I build up the nerve I might try to flash DU on my phone but I've never been a fan of Pure Nexus. The thing that bothers me is that I used Virgin Mobile which is on the Sprint network for over 10 years. Sometimes I had cheap phones and sometimes I had more expensive ones but I never experienced a problem where I had no Sprint signal anywhere in the city. Yet this 900 dollar phone shows no Sprint signal all over the place. I don't understand why that is. I do see a lot of similar complaints to mine on the official Project Fi support threads. If I hadn't had such great service with Project Fi on my Nexus 6P I would probably be willing to chalk it up to issues with Fi service in my area but that can't be the case.

Did you get your new replacement sim card? Or your new replacement phone? I have hope you can fix it for all of us.
As a side note, I was on a phone with Google Support once for over 90 minutes. This was the first day I got my Pixel XL and the Project FI sim card. Everything worked except voice. Literally data worked. Texting worked. Voice didn't.
So I spent the next 90 minutes on the phone with a very capable lad from Google. We tried everything. Things I didn't even know about.

In the end, all it took was factory reset. And everything worked.
Occasionally, T-Mob still wouldn't work - once every few months or so, which is easily remedied by manually switching to another carrier.

My new sim card is coming tomorrow. Since Project Fi worked fine with my other phone I'm left thinking either it doesn't work as well in general with the Pixel XL or there is something wrong with my particular phone. Since I've had this thing for less than a month I'm concerned Google will send me a refurbished phone instead of a new one. I spent a small fortune on this thing and don't want to get stuck with someone else's used phone when I spent that money for a new one. If the sim doesn't fix the problem I'm tempted to just keep the phone and manually switch networks when I need to. That seems to be what a lot of Project Fi customers get stuck doing anyway.

Thanks for the shortcut. I'm using Signal Spy, which seems to have largely the same functionality as other similar apps made for Fi users. It does allow me to manually switch networks if I'm on a bad one and the phone doesn't switch on its own. It also puts an icon on the bar on the top of the phone showing which carrier I'm on, which was mainly what I was curious about on my previous phone. I never had to manually switch networks with Fi on the Nexus so I didn't start using that function until I got the Pixel.
Hi all, I have Sprint and I get awful reception in my new home. Back in the day, we used to have an option to manually update the PRL file on the phone and it would connect to Verizon or another cell provider. Is there a chance that this option or modification is still available? I guess my question is, do any ROMs offer roam only settings, or is there a way to manually roam. Sprint doesn't seem to care whether I get service or not, so I have to do some manual intervention on this. Any insight would be appreciated.

There are apps like Signal Spy that are made for Project Fi users to manually switch networks since that service is supposed to pick the strongest signal from among 3 networks used on Fi. But there are a lot more networks listed than the ones Fi uses. If you have roaming enabled on your phone maybe you could switch to a different network manually even though you aren't a Fi customer.
By the way, I'm assuming you have a Pixel XL based on where you posted your question. It's more likely an issue with the phone than Sprint. I was on Sprint for years via Virgin Mobile and 100.00 CDMA only phones were much better at picking up the Sprint signal than my 900.00 Pixel XL is. I'm on Fi where Sprint is one of the carriers and Sprint shows no service all over the city which I know is not the case.
I believe with sim cards now, the prl is automatically updated, at least that is what Verizon told me

Verizon works that way, but this is one of the areas where Verizon and Sprint are different in how they implemented 4G LTE. Another example is that customers can switch sim cards between 4G LTE phones on Verizon, while you have to follow Sprint's procedure to switch service between LTE phones.

I've never used sprint because they always roam off Verizon where I live. The nearest native coverage is about 25 miles from where I live. That's good to know.
Sometimes if you aren't stuck with a contract it's a matter of finding who has the best network near you. I was on Sprint via Virgin Mobile for over 10 years and the network was great everywhere I went. Unfortunately Virgin Mobile won't let you bring your own phone so when I got a Nexus I switched to AT&T via Cricket. I couldn't get any phone reception at all in whole rooms in my apartment. It was brutal. After months of putting up with that I switched to Project Fi. I get good reception in my apartment with both Sprint and T-Mobile, although my Nexus 6P preferred T-Mobile and for some reason the Pixel XL prefers Sprint. Sometimes I have to manually switch to T-Mobile because Sprint reception is much spottier than it should be and Fi doesn't always switch on its own.
I've recently activated my Google Pixel 2 XL on Sprint and I was wondering if there was anyway to active Sprint calling Plus ( talking with data at same time) like on the Galaxy S8. Also the WiFi calling option is invisible. Did some reading and it appears that a Sprint sim deactivates the option. It's unfortunate that Sprint doesn't seem to care about people bringing their own devices. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Same here. Huge disappointment. Been with Sprint since they started and want to use my new Pixel 2 XL but found out it's handicapped at Sprint. Here's what's on the Sprint fact sheet for our phone:
Capabilities of the Pixel II XL
Calling Plus: No
•DSU: Yes
•HD Voice: Yes
•HPUE: Yes
•Visual Voicemail: No
•Voice Call Continuity: No
•Voice Roaming: Yes
•Wi-Fi Calling: No
•Wireless Data Roaming: Yes
*LTE Plus does not support talking and surfing the Web at the same time unless also connected to Wi-Fi.
I brought my Moto X PE to Sprint 2 years ago and have been without these important features for too long. I think, though a little more expensive, Project Fi is in our future. I'm going to try it over the next month. Apparently you can switch between carriers with the eSIM and Fi app.
C'mon Sprint, support the Pixels!

Thanks for the info man. Yea it's super depressing how Sprint handicaps this phone. Just the thought that I could put in a different Sim from another carrier and get those features bugs me lol.
How does sprint do it for the S8? I thought VoLTE required a network upgrade on their part which would therefore make it available to all phones
I found a way to make VoLTE calling work on my unlocked s8 plus may be it helps on pixel too
1. In Nova launcher add widget -> Activities (add LTE test and enhanced lte services)
2. Add LTE Test -> click VoLTE Test UI-> turn on first 2 setting.
3. Add Enhanced LTE Services and select this option.
4. Restart
Unfortunately don't see anything like those settings on my Sprint 2XL. I even tried the directions in this Note 8 thread. https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-8/help/voltecalling-plus-sprint-note-8-t3696341
I noticed that when I make a call, the phone drops from LTE to HSPA or whatever their 3G band is called. I have an LTE SIM in there that had HD calling working on my Essential, Pixel2 XL, iPhone 8+, OP3, etc...
I was getting HD calling on all of those devices, and I did call AT&T support and had them add my IMEI to the line, so it should be working. Is there something that I have to do to enable it on the phone?
My concern is that if I am tethering while on a conf call, I won't get LTE and that's a problem.
Thoughts?
U had it on ur op3, I thought att did not allow volte on non att phones, I was never able to get it on my op3
I thought that I did, and I did on my Essential. Damn it, this sucks... Might have to go back to the Essential. Not having voice and data at the same time in 2018 blows... I am within the return window, although because of the credit card breach, the card they would need to refund to, has been canceled... What a cluster...
Yeah, ran through all sorts of hoops with several customer service reps. They say that VoLTE is enabled and provisioned properly to this SIM and IMEI, but I can't get it to work and it doesn't even show up as an option to enable it in any of the phone's menus... So either AT&T won't allow this BYOD device to have simlutanous voice and data on LTE, or maybe something in the beta isn't giving me the option.
Is anyone running the stock non beta OOS and getting VoLTE to work on AT&T?
I also gave them an IMEI from one of my other phones, an AT&T branded Note 5 that I own, and told them to put that one in and see if it worked, because that would tell me whether it is the phone itself not able to do it, or a provisioning thing on AT&T's end... That didn't work either...
I then went back to my Essential and had them enter that IMEI and it didn't work either...
I guess if I want wifi calling and voice and data at the same time, I have to pay a ton of money for an AT&T phone... Kinda bummed...
I talked to their support and put the SIM back in my Essential, and it fired right up and has VoLTE and doesn't drop to H+ when I make a call. Same SIM, I didn't even call to give them the IMEI. So something isn't supported on the OP5T.
Which sucks, because between the two phones, I really prefer the 5T. Oh well, I guess it wasn't meant to be... That's the downside of buying unlocked phones, you may miss out on some of the key features that you want on the carrier side...
Which ROM are you on?
Did you turn on VoLTE in settings if you are in stock OOS? If not you can try a custom ROM like Liquid Remix that have VoLTE working
Stock rom. If I have to install a custom rom to get the phone to work, not worth it. I will just return it and get my money back
AT&T only enables VoLTE and LTE+ on provisioned devices and supported, usually BYOD especially for a non-listed device does NOT apply. I was on AT&T when I got my 5T, tried my sim from iPhone 6S and a brand new sim I got at the store that I was assured would have VoLTE capability, but nothing. Not even wifi calling would work on my 5T. No options in Settings either to toggle it. They want you to buy the device from them is why they do this on unlocked phones.
I switched to T-Mobile and I had VoLTE, LTE+, and VoWiFi all on first boot with T-Mobile sim, with all of them listed in Settings on the same device with same software version as I was when on AT&T's network.
It's simply just a case of AT&T not supporting the device. Typically only carrier-sold phones for AT&T will have those capabilities, if you look it up you'll see many people say the same. Personally I'm glad I switched to T-Mobile because they don't lock down all of those features to try to get me to buy a phone from the carrier like AT&T did/does. I'd never go back to them at this point. Sorry but if staying on AT&T is the only option for you I'd look into how you could go about returning the phone to OnePlus and getting something AT&T-approved.

I have an ATT sim from my company originally meant for an iPhone. VoLTE did not work on a google pixel cause the plan was not compatible. And since it is not my plan I can't make changes. I ordered the Oneplus to see if I could get it to work. And on a Stock ROM it will not work without Root and the Magisk Module to enable VoLTE. It will work on Custom ROMS such as Omni and Phoenix, both of with work for me with no issues.
In the end I returned the OP5T for a refund, and am back to using my Essential. While that is a non-AT&T phone that I bought right from Essential, it does support VoLTE out of the box, no issues. I don't get Wifi Calling, but I get HD Calling, works with my tethering plan, etc... Not sure why the Essential works but the OP5T doesn't, and it sucks because I liked the OP5T more... but it is what it is...

It works on ATT, but the issue is that it doesn't do HD Calling, Wifi Calling, etc...
Make a phone call and while you are on the phone, you lose LTE and it drops to HSPA(3G)...
It's not a phone limitation, it's that AT&T won't allow it to have those features on their network. That is the ONLY reason I sent the phone back. Hopefully they address it with the OP6 and get in "approved" for AT&T and I can sell my iPhone 8+ and come back to Android...

Sorry, but this will never happen in the foreseeable future.
AT&T purposely does this to all BYOD, so the OP6 is not going to change anything. They only offer these options for phones you purchase directly through them online or in an AT&T store.

Not entirely true. The Pixels you buy straight from Google, work. The Essential that I had, worked fine. There are phones that work just fine that you don't have to purchase through AT&T.

How did you get it working? I didn't want to root it and install a custom ROM, which I believe was the only way to get it working.
I tried using an IMEI from one of my other phones that I know worked, etc... Nothing worked.
You guys know that even if you show the switches and turn them on, that the LTE data doesn't work right? It's just showing the options and you can turn them on. I even have my OP5t added to my account as an ATT LG G6 and it doesn't work. Unless there is some agreement, like with the Essential Phone or Google's only official phone, you're out of luck.

Exactly, that's what I was getting at. I talked to ATT several times, tried different IMEI's and nothing worked. Regardless of what the options in the menu claim, it doesn't work. If you are just using your phone it will say LTE. But when you make a call, as soon as it connects, it switches to 3G or HSPA+... It won't do phone calls and LTE data at the same time.
If it did, I would have kept the phone. But that's a pretty big feature to have to live without for me. That and HD calling, Wifi Calling, etc...
I wish that OnePlus would do whatever they need to do to get the phone "certified" for ATT, but I don't see that happening...

Yea, it's a pretty crappy situation. I came from a Moto x Pure to the OP5 and then to the OP5t and it was a big disappointment when I was stuck without LTE on calls. I had the Moto x on Verizon though. I really don't get why they restrict BYOD phones at all considering that if people use MORE data, they are likely to bump up their plans to the next tier. I kinda don't get the rationale. Anyway, it is what it is. I love my OP5t and hope to keep this phone for a while, unlike many past phones. But I live in a city, so rarely have issues here.
Someone has confirmed wifi calling working on the 3 XL on ATT, if that's true shouldn't we be able to get it working on the 2/XL? Is it IMEI related? Even if so, if I were on a rom that had wifi calling and swapped a sim in it from a Note 9 or something it would work at least until the system detects the imei and updates it, which isn't always the case or all that fast to happen.
Sounds like a carrier issue.
I think it's garbage that At&t ran this whole campaign "Google Pixel works on At&t" yet they won't release all their features to the users. I had to beg them for HD calling. Finally after a week they activated it. This stuff should be automatic and available to everyone. I pay the same amount as an iPhone user
This has me sitting with mixed feelings. I have really bad AT&T reception in my basement and really need WiFi calling. I don't want to spend so much money upgrading from a 2 XL to 3 just for this though.. (granted, I like the non-XL 3 form factor better..)
Seems like poor customer perception to enable this finally on the 3 phones when the 1 and 2 fully support this other than AT&T flipping a switch on the other end. I'm glad they finally are allowing the 3s.. but..
