Hi everyone, so I've been trying to find whether xperia z1 supports a 5 pole audio connector, since I'd like to buy a Sony speaker microphone stm-10 for better recordings. However, while searching I found out that this little thingy was released after the release of z2 so there are no answers anywhere whether it's compatible with z1 or not (because of the 5 pole jack). I've tried reaching out the support and electronics center but no proper answer was given to me.

Hi Guys
So after painstakingly reading through every message in this thread to ensure I do not paste a duplicate answer, I can inform you I have found the true problem regarding headphones.
Straight from the words of a Sony technician:
The cause of the incompatibility: Sony Xperia S supply 2V (Volts) purely from an energy consumption perspective. The microphone in the boundled Sony Mobile headset is Electret microphones that only require a 2V feed. For other suppliers (e.g. IPhones headsets) they can use MEMS microphones that require a minimum of 2,7V.
In order for fully compatibility, Sony smartphones need to supply a minimum of 2,7V. This requires a feature/HW change.
A feature/HW change has been submitted to be implemented in coming products.
So moral of the story is, Sony screwed us all...

Does this mean I can't use a mic similar to my X10? I tried using them earlier and I now know they dont work with my ION because Sony went with the CTIA format. So what do you guys use for a mic? I'm wanting to use a mic similar to the one that came with the X10, by that I mean I want to be able to plug in any earphones I want with the mic since earphones eventually break with one side not working. Thanks.
I'll check the ones I have. I have a set I got from my dell streak and the ones from my xperia s.

thanks because I use google hangouts with friends but the ion isn't exactly loud, even with xloud on
May not be exactly what you're looking for but I use Skullcandy Ink'd earbuds with the mic.
http://www.skullcandy.com/shop/headphones/earphones-and-earbuds/inkd
I've used these for probably the last 2 years, great sound quality, full refund too if they stop working, only thing I've had happen to mine were one of the buds stops working. Pretty durable for the price, I've only broken 1 pair from skateboarding/biking. Also most stores will carry them for $15 instead of $25 like listed on the site.
Tried the generic ones I got with my Dell Streak and they worked....gotta find my Xperia S headphones to try.
I think you should try out the Sony LiveSound Hi-Fi Headset, it cost a little bit of money but it sounds awesome! Comes with an in-line mic with built-in remote.
I personally use the Sony MW600 Stereo Bluetooth Headset, no wires extending to your phone in your pocket. just a short earbud wire that wraps around your neck. you can also disconnect the supplied wire and use a 3mm wire to plug into a stereo or your car's aux so you're completely hands free and the sound comes out of car's speakers.
Both of these are available on the Sony mobile online store, probably sold cheaper on amazon.
so the ION does support earphone's with mic and you guys have all tried out the mic ? sry for this question, I got my phone from best buy and so it didn't come with the earphones. Instead I've been using my earphones from my X10 and with the ION using the new standard and with the quote from my first post I was thinking that the ION didn't support the mic in earphone combo
I used the HTC buds that come with some of there WP7 devices. Worked like a charm.

From what I read, the LiveSound headset doesn't fully work on the 2012 Xperia phones. There's another pair called Smart headset that are fully compatible with the ion. They're basically the same set other than that.
I just ordered the MW600 headset, the design reminded me alot of the old Sony MiniDisc Walkman remotes. Seems really slick.
I have the Smart wireless headset pro MW1. They work great and the audio quality is awesome for music and calls.
I just didn't want to buy a pair that the ion wouldn't support, but I'll have to look and see which to get. I wan't the skullcandy ink'd 2 pair but idk if they'll work. time for some more research
Hi friends,
I have been using Xperia Arc since July 2011.............the MH650 headset that came with the phone is really good.........but now i notice that the volume in the right part is very low and i do not get good stereo quality now.............so can you suggest any good 2012 Sony in ear headset that can deliver good bass and treble..............i was interested in Live hi fi headset but it seems it is compatible only with xperia arc and nothing else due to the audio connecter model used...............thanks..............
I can say live sound is superb and it's unfortunate that it only works with 2011 xperias, but I use another pair of earphones, which i got for 10 dollars from ebay, for everything else. If you want one pair of headset that works with everything (not just 2011 xperia), you have to buy an adapter from ebay or something
thanks you friend........don't know this happens always with headsets..........the volume drops in one side..........i also use the same headset for my VAIO LAPTOP...........will this be the reason?............due to some voltage varaitions.............am not sure,,,,,,,

I use MH650 headset daily aswell.
I have no problems with it on my Arc S, however using it on my laptop, then I need to insert it not fully, but a bit out, in order to have proper quality.
Try your headset on different devices with different placement. Then you should find your answer.
yes friend..i also insert it onla bit when using my laptop...........have been using for few months......no issues at all........but few days ago i noticed the sound level is low on the right side..........it is like that now also..........so am wondering whether to get a new headset............

will the MH750 work with Xperia Arc? I do not want to go for Live hi-fi as i cannot use it for other phones. so do not want to spend lot of money on it. now 2 options are mh650 or mh750.
I recently ordered my Xperia Z1 Compact, and while waiting for it to arrive, I am trying to find various accessories for it. The accessories forum has been extremely helpful in finding cases and a screen protector, but I need some information regarding headset compatibility. Due to the way I handle them, they tend to break quickly, rarely lasting more than several months.
My question is, does the Xperia Z1 Compact support headsets marked as iPhone compatible? Last Xperia I owned was an Xperia Arc, which had some issues with such headsets.

It depends on which headset and what functions you need. Any Bluetooth headset will work fine (Jaybird Bluebuds X and Sony SBH80 are recommended).
Any wired headsets marked "Made for iPhone" or similar will have limited compatability - they will play sound fine, but buttons on any inline remotes may not work at all. Volume buttons on these will never work, due to Apple patents.
If you want a 3-button inline remote, you'll need to look for something made for Android, e.g. the HTC E240 earphones work perfectly with the Z1C, are surprisingly cheap and have much better sound quality & isolation & comfort than any Apple earphones IMHO.
This should probably be in the Accessories forum
Another Compatibility issue
Hello all,
I have been using my Z1C for a few days and I seem to discover a little bug with headphones compatibility. When I connect any headphones with normal 3,5mm jack (with two rounds) the control of the phone via touchscreen starts misbehaving. Random icon on the desktop appears as it was touched (marked), and all attempts to control the phone are successful for 20-30%, long story short it reminds me the behavior of the phone being in cold environment and not being warmed up to the touchscreen operational temperature. (It registers my touching but quite improperly on wrong places.). On the other hand when I connect normal 4-conductor TRRS phone connector (with 3 rounds), everything works normally. Has anybody experienced same kind of trouble? I've been using Cyanogenmod 12-20150217-NIGHTLY-amami ROM. Or has anybody tested it with earlier versions of CM (11), which is supposed to have stable/snapshot release? Thank you.
FYI Solved, probably system bug, downgrade to CM 11 helped.

Hello,
does the Z3 Series feature a 5 pol 3.5 jack? Did sony mention the compatibility of the microphone with the new z3 series?
Yes, Z3 & Z3C support / have a 5-pole 3.5mm jack, else I wouldn't know how e.g. the Sony MDR-NC31EM Digital Noise Cancelling headset could work (which they claim it does in the White Paper). Similarly, the Stereo-Mic STM10A should work, too.

Is there a way to use a classic (3-pole 3.5 mm jack) external stereo microphone on the Z3C ?
I already have a good one (Sony ECM-719) and would like to use it rather than buy the STM10.
Thanks
I saw an article on the internet that showed a stereo microphone that connects to the xperia z2 via the earphone jack. anyone know of something similar for our phone? I am really interested in finding a nice microphone that can be attatched to the z1, I am not content with what I get from just using the built in microphones.
this is what I am talking about: http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/products/accessories/stereo-microphone-stm10/
also, will this work for the z1?

That particular microphone won't work with the Z1.
Look at the pin stripes. It has an extra contact point that the 3.5mm port of the Z1 doesn't support.
That said, any 'regular' 3.5mm microphone should work with the Xperia Z1...
