LTE+ (CA) slower than LTE - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Howdy.
For quite some time i've found my phone to download quite slow on LTE+ Mobile Network.
LTE+ or LTE Advanced is nothing different than LTE with Carrier Aggregation. This means instead of using a single LTE Stream it will use 2 LTE streams at the same time.
Now my observation with LTE+ is that i get about 5mbps in Speedtest app, while using only one LTE Stream i get about 20-40mbps. Which is like.... utterly nonesene.
So, where does this come from?
A: Because i have a 709 Taiwan device with Taiwan Modem it's not working here in Europe
B: My Antenna is broken.
I've had the exact same behaviour on Stock Rom, LOS and AOSP based ROMs. So i don't think it's a software issue. (and yeah, i did RUU in between)
I've tested this over 6 months in 5 different cities with different ROM/Basebands from 1.92.709.1 onwards to 2.41.709.7 Similar results every time.
I've Changed Sim card from SALT to Swisscom and had LTE+ signal, same issue. 5-10mbps maximum.
Now then. Anyone here has tests of LTE and LTE+ and has a similar issue? Or is it working flawless for you guys?

How can you tell you are on CA?

Because words are nice but screenshots are better... Here some screens from the root app Network Guru WHILE using speedtest in the background!
Normal:

And with LTE+ aka 2xCA

Just in case you're curious, here are some Screens from the Swisscom Network, as you can see they sue EARFCN 6300 and 1301 instead of 6400 and 1601 as Salt does.

Hi small issue actually. You need to set 4g apn setting to your mobile.you may refer to your telco or google setting 4g for your courier. Like me using celcom malaysia also do manual setting 4g.auto apn setting only 3g.

I have also had this issue on my HTC 10. When I was seeing LTE +, I expected even faster speeds, however the opposite happened. Fortunately many places don't have LTE + so this is not affecting most of the times.

me too - suddenly.... after i flashed my stock rom - but before on stock it went over 30mbps

[Q] Lookingto move to the Note 2 and after clarification

Hi All. Long time since I’ve posted but looking at getting a note 2 tomorrow.
Now I live in Australia and on the Optus network but using a cheap provider that at the moment only uses their 3G network.
At the moment I have a sim card setupfor the 3G network.,
At the moment Vaya don’t have access to the Optus 4G network (1800MHz frequency) but it is gonna happen.
Can I buy a LTE version and use my current sim and run on the 3G (H+ even) using my existing sim card and the 4G note 2?
Then when Vaya release their 4G plans I can grab a 4G sim (or is 4G just account and phone dependant??) and away I go?
I believe it shouldn’t be a problem as the phone still operates on the 3G network as if I bought a N7100 if 4G is not enabled. But it will use more power just having that chip sitting in there.
yes, it will work.
it will only work in 4g if a 4g network is supported from your carrier. otherwise it will revert to the fastest network from your carrier that is supported by the device, which in most cases is hsdpa.

Thanks for your reply.
Now I've been searching everywhere for good analysis on the 3G and 4G battery comparison but there isn't much out there but personal thoughts. Well there is more on the S3 so maybe that is a good guideline.
So the 4G version with LTE turned on can only achieve half the screen on time of the 3G version. Wow that terrible. With LTE off it last about 7-8 hours screen time rather than closer to 10 hours to the 3 version.
Has anyone got some good links that compare the battery life between the two models? I can live with turning 4G off most of the time if it doesn't drain too much but I don't need the speed if it has a big toll on the battery life even with LTE turned off.

Its touched on here but still not sure.

Hmm, those match my settings and I am getting LTE. Dumb question, but have you restarted? I noticed my phone can get kinda quirky when switching between APN's, or if the data gets turned off by another app for some dumb reason or another.
I have a feeling there is a little more tweaking to do to the modem from Oppo...

I was uunclear about H+, have just been looking up info....Was on Verizon, a GSM newbee here
However, I am seeing very slow speeds on HSPA+ and HSP...not even seeing much of a difference in speeds between the two on my device.
between them. Averaging 0.6 Mbps to 1.3 Mbps down, and 0.8 mbps to 1.3 Mbps up, even though T-mobile tech support claims I have excellent 4g coverage in my area. Is this most likely hardware?
Also, on my roadtrip yesterday to Medford, I was capping off at around 10 Mbps on LTE at the most, which seems a ,ittle slow for LTE.

Sometimes your coverage can be solid but the backhaul (connection between towers and the Internet) can be awful. AT&T's local reps even told me that the local LTE isn't going to be particularly good for a while until they upgrade the backhaul to the towers.
Your HSPA+ speeds seem low, but that's in comparison with my AT&T experiences. I might try doing a speedtest comparison of LTE between my Nexus 5 and my Find 7a if I can.
I was reading the pocketnow review and they had trouble getting the phone to work on AT&T and T-mobile in the US. Does this phone even support T-Mobile LTE bands? In most areas T-Mobile has their LTE on the AWS band.

Mine does get all of these (4G, H, H+, etc.) but the problem is most of the time it can't even get data connection.
GPRS Setting for LTE works for Me
I was having problems connecting to data, calls no problem (OPPO FIND 7 USA).
Anyway, the automatic APN settings weren't right for me,I had to manually set the APN Protocol setting to IPV4 (wasn't set, reading Not Set) & it finally connected to 4G LTE.
Here's the strange part:
The APN Name (On OPPO FIND 7,USA Model) is T-Mobile GPRS NOT T-Mobile LTE.
If I changed the name,it wouldn't connect to data at all.
From best I can tell via web search, GPRS is synonymous with 2G,however,I have 4G LTE when this APN Name is used.
I've seen others having a hard time connecting to the network & seems this bug arose in the latest update.
Anyway,my settings are identical to those in the pics in the OP EXCEPT the very 1st line, the APN Name.
Where I'm at right now is notorious for a weak signal due to building/equipment interference, however,I'm picking up an excellent signal (-90 to -80dBm / 53asu) on LTE:13
Have you tried to turn on LTE 4G by going in the dialer type *#*#4636#*#* phone information and set preferred network as LTE only ?

Yes.
As it is now,w/the APN Name as T-Mobile GPRS & in the hidden menu, changing the preferred network to LTE has no effect,it stays connected to LTE & everything below that which is available in my area.
I just left it as UNKNOWN.
I tried changing the APN Name to T-Mobile LTE & it immediately disconnects, regardless of any other changes in the hidden menus.
As the phone senses/sets-up Auto APN,the only apparent thing that is omitted is the APN Protocol setting, which by default on my phone & SIM Card registered Not Set.
Changing that value to IPV4 (from Not Set) is what made the difference.
Perhaps this quirk has something to do with 2G in my area having been replaced/upgraded to 4G & 4G LTE & the phone doesn't sense the difference/recognize the difference but in name only, but, accepts the 4G/LTE Connection.
Not knowing all things network/etc..,this seems like a possible explanation.
All I know is that I have an excellent connection & fast speeds w/browsing/etc.....
I don't care what the phone calls it,or sees it as,success is success.
I've seen stranger things than this........
I have since replaced my SIM CARD & had no problems connecting to T-MOBILE's 4G LTE,no modification of the APN was needed.
However, this is while flashed to CYANOGENMOD 11 nightlies, have no idea if the previous issues would pop-up if running the stock COLOR 1.2.4i O/S.
I have had issues with T-mobile LTE. Played around with all the settings. Deleted the APN and created a new one, etc. It works now, but I didn't do anything special, it started working randomly a day or 2 later
Strangely enough I'm having the same problem getting 3g with Virgin (EE/TMobile) in the UK
It can take a while for LTE to provision after setting up the APN. Set it and let it try for about an hour.
APN
The APN setting should have no effect on this.
You have 2 different fields when you type *#*#4636#*#*, gsm service and gprs service. If gsm service does not show "in service", you can use any APN in the world and it still won't work.

LG G4 VS986 on T-Mobile LTE problem

Issue:
Phone will not stay locked on LTE in Global or LTE/UMTS/GSM mode. When in Global or LTE/UMTS/GSM mode and LTE does connect, it's momentarily and when trying to run a speed test or open a webpage, it quickly disconnects and connects to HSDPA. If switched to LTE/CDMA signal locks in great and data speeds are great however voice services are not available. Any thoughts or advice is welcomed. Thanks ahead of time!

What band LTE are you connecting to? I found that here on band 2, I will connect at first, but then it switches back to edge. Seems fine in a band 4 LTE area though.

I haven't found LTE Discovery to report the band correctly, at least in my case. It would say I'm on band 4 on my Moto X, but when using a band 4 only device I would only get Edge, but when I go in a confirmed band 4 area it works fine. From what I've found, most 2G > LTE sites were converted to band 2 LTE. Although since you get HSPA the chances of it actually being on band 4 are higher.
I'm fairly certain this is a Band 4 area. The latest T-Mobile maps are pretty good about pointing out Band 2 areas. I've since sold the phone and acquired a iPhone 6 Plus which I'm looking to sell to replace it with an international G4 or T-Mobile G4. I was pretty impressed with that phone. If I had to rank my favorites, it's number 2. Nexus 5 is still king of the hill for me. There wasn't a better phone out when it was release for a better price.
did you ever figure this out? samething is happening to me
Unfortunately I didn't. I sold it and bought one for T-Mobile...... Which I just sold about 3 hours ago.
So I tested it out again, and in a band 2 area when I boot up my phone with a T-Mobile SIM, I get LTE for several seconds then it cuts back over to 2G.
Now that there is a new software update for the G4, I wonder if this is anymore reliable. Anyone who took the OTA update in the past few days, can you let us know if it's any better?
Sent from my VS986 using Tapatalk
Been there, done that...wanted to switch over to T-Mobile, but unfortunately, the VS986 only works with two of their three LTE bands, as you know, and it seems everywhere I went, they were using the one the phone doesn't receive (I'm in southern California, for what it's worth, but tested it on a freeway run up the I-5 to the central part of the state - only got 4G-LTE in a few places). Wound up going back to Verizon
I'm getting the exact same results in Burlington, VT (T-Mobile band 2 market). I first have to manually select T-Mobile (defaults to roaming on AT&T HSPA+) then LTE works for less than a minute (LTE Discovery says band 4) and then I lose signal when I get signal again, I only have edge. It does this constantly and is really annoying.
Aww, bummer. I was thinking about switching to T-Mobile, but looks like that is not a viable option? So no one has been able to successfully use the phone on T-Mobile, even after enabling bands 2 and 4 only?
This whole plethora of LTE bands, where each provider does its own crap is such a mess, is just serves to lock in customers, since switching phones is expensive. Government should mandate that all phones can work on all US LTE bands, the technology exists.
I am on the same boat. Everything works on my VS986 on t-mobile network. but I cannot get the LTE to work properly. LTE discovery shows band 4 (not sure if correct though)

My VRZ LG G4 shows that it has Band 2, 4, 5, and 13. I tried enabling 2 & 4 only, 4 only, 2 only, 2&4&13 only but with no success.
What is interesting is I am coming from VRZ LG G3 and LTE was just fine and never had an issue.
I looked at the VRZ LG G3 LTE bands and I see Band 3,4, and 13 enabled. It did not even have band 2.

I think since someone reported before that this used to work the G3, it sounds like a bug to me. I guess we can hope and pray that this will work in future releases, but there is no guarantee of course. Not sure what complaining to Verizon will do, since they are probably not very interested in you using T-Mobile. Of course, you can always wrap the complaint into something like you are using the phone in a different country on vacation and it doesn't work. Maybe a complaint to the FTC could work too, since it sounds like Verizon is required to have their phones unlocked for use on other networks based on some settlement.

I am tempted to try the guide in here to add more LTE bands:

While some testers said the LTE bands are limited by hardware others reported some success modifying the software. Any thoughts?

I'm having the issue here. Determined it only flashes to 4G+ when there is active data downloading. Otherwise it sits at LTE. US/AT&T here. Was considering going to T-Mobile to put a SIM in the 2nd tray and see if it does it there too, because I was thinking it was just an APN setting.
An easy way to tell is open YouTube and playback a video off of cellular..indicator will stick on 4G+. Alternatively, run a Speed Test, when downloading it will flash back and forth rapidly, however when doing the upload test it will stay on LTE.
I always thought 4G+ was the same as HSDPA+/HSUPA+ which is nowhere near as fast as LTE. Does anyone having the issue have a recent LTE phone they can swap back into and copmare speed tests?
Edit - typos.

4G is LTE. Not sure what 4G+ is. On LTE when it works I can get around 100 down.
Hmm, no 4G and LTE are different, in the US at least. 4G was marketed before LTE came about, you can see proof of this on an iPhone 4S, which did not have LTE radios but did label HSDPA+ connections as 4G. So you can thank Apple for the marketing confusion. However, upon researching this issue it seems 4G+ (with the plus, not just 4G) is the technical equivalent to LTE. It is just used in different countries, such as Singapore.
Regardless, the issue seems to have gone away after coming to work and being in different AT&T towers. I'm guessing it was just a graphical bug.
In Europe 4g and Lte is the same but the 4g+ is the new faster net

Yes that's exactly what mine is doing, however today it does it sometimes and other times it remains showing LTE when downloading data. I noticed when it remains as LTE, the up/down indicators in the pull-down settings don't show up, which leads me to believe even more that the LTE/4G+ toggling is just a visual bug, as they are technically the same network connection.
I took contact with the Oneplus support about this problem. They told me to send them a log with a hidden menu ( call the *#800#). He sent the log to the development team, I will tell you if I have news

we don't know, we do not know where u r at or what carrier u are on and by 4G do u mean LTE
I got this the first 2 hours that I used my new OP3. It stayed on H+ for 2 hours then without reboot or anything and not even moving, it got LTE.

But I've had it for days now.. it just stays on H all the time (it changes to LTE symbol maybe once every hour for a few minutes)

Check your APN settings and make sure they're the latest for your carrier.

I am having the same issue. I am on Bell in Toronto Canada. Some areas cannot get LTE. Some times my data just hangs showing full bars. Can't receive or make calls or texts. There are a few threads on different forums with people having the same issue. Hoping it is just a software bug that can be fixed with an update.
I'm O2 Germany and have a really good LTE reception. Look up what LTE bands your carrier is using and compare it to the specs of the OP3. Maybe that's the issue. You can also try to enable flight mode for a few seconds then disable it and the phone will connect new and then you might have LTE.
edit: Seems like Bell Canada is not fully supported but 3 UK is.

I get LTE fully at work just fine. But around my house and the neighbourhood where I live, I only get 3G whereas I used to always have 4G!

Hm I can recommend the app LTE Discovery. Then you'll see if there is any LTE network around you and if the phone receives it.

I have also the OnePlus X and that always gets LTE and it supposedly supports less bands.

I understand the icons are not showing you what you want to see but how about the speeds? Did you do a comparison or is this all strictly off of H v LTE icon?

Off of the H vs LTE icon to be honest
I am using my OP3 with mobile internet, using google map a lot. But the google map app eating too much data. Even if i download the offline map and trying to use offline the navigation. If i try to use the offline pre downloaded map without internet connection just does not work. After few seconds or minutes the map will become „blank” means no can see the streets and roads. Nothing at all. But if i turn back the internet on my phone everything coming back. But the point is, that is why i want to use offline maps to save my data bundles.
On my OPO it was not a problem, if i was using the offline map and turning off my mobile internet connection the google map was workng fine. I am using CM13/ Marshmallow on both phone.
Also it has never eat so much data like on OP3.
I am on Tmobile UK and using a 1GB data bundle per month. Before was using my OPO the 1 GB data was more then enough for a month using google map almost every day around 7-8 hours a day. I need the google sat nav for my everyday work so that is why using a lot.
But with OP3 only yesterday i was using almost 200MB and it was all the google map.
I was trying to disable background data traffic on the settings, and also the google map settings has some option but just does not help.
If i download the desired map via wifi and after trying to use the map offline it just become „blank” the map. I need to use the mobile internet to be able to use the offline map. Annoying…
AT&T in the US. I can't get LTE at work. Only H+, and sometimes just 3G.
My issue is that when I get into an area that is LTE for certain, the device doesn't pick it up. It stays in 3G or H+.
I then have to toggle the SIM settings on and off for the device to get LTE. Then it is fine until the next time I go into am area without LTE.
My apn settings are correct and my IMEI is mapped correctly.
Changing to LTE only won't work because then sometimes I would have no signal.
Have you installed OOS 3.2.4? If so go back to 3.2.2. There are known connectivity issues with 3.2.4. There's a little more info on the official OnePlus Community forum in case your interested.
