Good day to all of the wonderful members of XDA. =) I searched through the 9 pages of general and cannot seem to find the information I am looking for. I conducted a search and when it seemed I was getting closer, I ended up with some more questions! So I have decided to post... If my answers are out there, please point me in the right direction, Thank you kindly in advance.
Now, I am currently leasing a Galaxy S6 from Sprint in Puerto Rico (United States) and I am really interested in unlocking the WiFi Hot spot since I have unlimited Data on my plan. I could pay sprint the extra $50.00 for 6Gb of data on Hot spot... but that's just too expensive when you add the price of the lease and the unlimited data plan as well as the insurance and additional hidden charges. Regardless of my reasons, I would respectfully like to know if there is a way to unlock the hot spot, and then return everything back to normal when it's time to return the lease. Please help and thank you.

Apologies for the double post... It's been a month and I came across this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/sp...ot-tripping-knox-sprint-s6-supported-t3103196
Will rooting allow me to access the Wi Fi Hot spot? Thank you in advance!~

Good morning! Thank you for posting your question rather clearly.
Yes, you will want root for unlimited hotspot. Just return the phone to stock before returning to Sprint. You will want to follow @koop1955 guide located here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/sp...uide-links-files-update-root-restore-t3366862
After you have rooted and have TWRP recovery installed.. use the link at the bottom of koop's post for the hotspot zip file.

So for those who upgraded to the Nitro HD and had to sacrifice their unlimited plans, have you guys tried this little loophole? It was brought up in the Atrix forum and it seems many people have tried it and succeeded. I'd love to try it but nobody around me has an Iphone 2G so I can't do it yet.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1008698
Btw, if it works for you, please thank the appropriate people, and I mean the original poster on the link above. I am merely bringing this here so people who didn't know about it can give it a try. This is not my work in any ways.
EDIT/NOTE! To all newcomers/readers of this thread, please be informed that this loophole is no longer available! The very loophole that has been used for years by many has been permanently patched by AT&T as of December 2011. As such, nobody, and I mean NOBODY, can provide their services to upgrade your data plan to Unlimited anymore. Please avoid reaching to ebay sellers who used to provide such services, for example, lordofthereef, since they can no longer help you. Your only real option right now is to plea your case to AT&T in hopes they will somehow provide you with unlimited. Thank you for your interest with this thread.
I don't think that's going to work for an LTE area. I still have Unlimited Data with my Nitro, but I don't have LTE over here.
It works. I know because I did it. Actually I didn't DO it myself. I paid a guy on ebay to do it. I have a friend who also paid him and got it done. Last summer I was tethering with my iphone before I knew I wasn't "allowed" to and they cancelled my Unlimited plan. Since I couldn't get ahold of an iphone 2G I paid the guy on ebay. His seller name is lordofthereef. Don't use anyone but him (I've heard people have problems with the other sellers).
I don't know why anyone would lose their Unlimited plan switching to the Nitro. Whatever AT&T rep told you that you couldn't keep Unlimited LIED to you.

Allstar, can u describe wat needs to be done with this seller in order to get the unlimited to work? And how much did u have to pay him? I searched for him on ebay, found him but he has no postings that show him offering to get unlimited for you. If he doesn't charge an exorbitant amount of money to do it, I am willing to pay him for it.
Edit: Nevermind Allstar, found it through his old feedbacks...It seems he is saying it is currently unavailable though hmm.

Oh that sucks. I wonder if AT&T killed it or he is too busy. He's in school and was being hounded by idiots to do that for them (people from forums trying to go around ebay). I paid him $40, but I saw his price go down to $35. Maybe message him and see if he knows of someone else trustworthy that can do it.
Fudge!! He said the AT&T unlimited data plan that he is doing is down for good! I don't know if it's just with him or AT&T finally got rid/patched the loophole, but this is looking grim
Oh man. I guess it was just a matter of time before AT&T caught on. If you can get ahold of an iphone 2G for little or no cost I would still try it.

I don't think it's possible anymore, without actually escalating the issue to their claims team. This guy confirmed it over at the atrix forum:
ajdrausal said:
The loop hole no longer exists, I called 611 (customer service) and the rep had to do an escallation, they ended up giving my friend the 30$ a month unlimited but it wasnt something they could do from the get go. What you can do to get it is call them up and if u never had a smart phone before but had a regular messaging phone is.
add unlimited data
wait a billing cycle
aquire iPhone 2G
try to activate it
call 611 and complain that u had unlimited and since iPhone 2g is older they should allow it, have them send a email to the team that takes care of feature and have them add the unlimited 30$ plan (since the 20$ doesnt exist)
That is basically what happened with my friend, but he had unlimited on his messaging phone for a year.

The seller also said that the loophole is what he used and is now no longer functioning.
Fudge! I should have moved faster or did it back when I was on the atrix!
Not sure why you're having to jump through hoops. The guy just offered to keep the unlimited plan that I've had the whole time.
If you have the Unlimited at the time of upgrading you can keep it. Some have been told you can't, but that is a lie. I've heard several reason people are given, but they are all false. This trick is for those that either never had unlimited or lost it at some point. Unfortunately it looks like it's a closed loophole.

Umm thats not the case. Switching to the LTE plans is still unlimated if your grandfathered in. As I did not have a problem doing so. I got the unliamted plan on a brand new line 3 months ago. bought a good shape iPhone 2g localy. PAIN to activate cause iTunes. Then after that sold it and made 10 dollar profit
I never lost my unlimited due to an upgrade. I let go of it back when I was on a BB Curve and did not need data plan on the phone. Didn't realize they were gonna cancel unlimited from their roster of data plans, so now i'm stuck with a 2GB (well 3GB with their new data plan). That's why I'm dying to get back my unlimited.
I think the only way to get it now is to know someone on the inside with the ability to manipulate the plan features.

I am posting here because I am getting quite a few people asking about unlimited data through eBay. Unfortunately this has been shut down completely by AT&T (read neither myself or any other private party can do this any longer). I am posting here in hopes that people read this and stop trying to contact me for this over eBay message. I have been getting half a dozen or more requests weekly, and will likely just start not responding sepparately to each and everyone.
To those I have helped, enjoy!
To those I could not, so sorry.

Lordofthereef, Thank you for stopping by and informing everyone that this loophole is no longer available. It is very unfortunate for us who are limited to a few GB of data but I guess there is nothing we can do anymore at this point. It is now too late. I will update my initial post to inform readers that this is no longer available and to please avoid any attempts to reach out to you in hopes of getting the unlimited data. Thanks again and You've done a great service to those who have received your help

I recently purchased the new Galaxy S4 (T-Mobile version) from Walmart. I obtained the one with Walmart's Family Mobile packaging (10% off, plus I'm with them anyway). Family Mobile does not do service contracts, so my phone was paid full price.
Now, how do I go about getting the phone unlocked for use in international travel? Since I bought the phone free and clear, I should be able to request the unlock code, but Family Mobile's 611 service doesn't present the right kind of technical support option for asking such a question. I am also hesitant to contact T-Mobile directly since my service is not directly through them. I know it's possible to buy unlock codes, but I am trying to see if I can get them without charge (time is not at issue in this case).
What would be the best way to approach this problem? Has anyone else gotten their phone unlocked through Family Mobile and can explain the process they used?
Just call them, tell them your going away if you use tmobile service you'll be fine.

i would think tmobile would have to unlock it themselvs, since it is their phone and i beleive family mobile is only a subsidiary. for tmobile to unlock your phone, you would have to meet the following requirements http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1588. in your case, im pretty sure the easier route would to just pay 30 bucks and buy the unlock code
Since he bought the phone outright, T-Mobile might just unlock it.

do you understand this requirement ?
You have a minimum of 40 consecutive days of active Postpaid service since purchase (or for Prepaid service, have used your device within the past 60 days)

If he bought the phone outright and have the receipt for it, T-Mobile will unlock it regardless of any requirements, since he paid full price for it.
No they won't, it says right on their page it needs to be activated for at least 40 days on post paid or 60 days prepaid in order for them to unlock it.yes it does have to be paid off but that's not the only requirement.refer to my link for all the requirements

To the Moderators:
Sorry. Didn't see the Q&A forum when I first made the post. Honest mistake.
Back to the topic at hand:
The big problem about the service requirement is that my service is not directly with T-Mobile but rather through Family Mobile, a service known as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator or MVNO. SimpleMobile is another one in the T-Mobile network. As best as I can determine, since I don't have service directly with T-Mobile they will probably not cooperate, forcing me to enlist an unlocking service. Thank you anyway for the input.

just use it.
Before spending any money, why not spend 10 minutes of your time and call. The worst that can happen is they say no and you loose 10 minutes of your time. The phone is paid for and you have a receipt for it, it's not like they will blacklisted or anything.........just my 2 cents.

then your best bet would to use the above link, pay the money and instantly get the code.
Just a note --- I went to get an unlock code for my S4, paid in full. Guy had no issues submitting for it, however the T-Mo automated response was that I cannot get it until the phone has been active on my line for 7 days, so Im going to call again today (I picked it up instore last wed).
OP - id say just call, it wont hurt to try, worst they say is no?
What is it with all the website referrals and buying codes? Contact T-Mobile first, be polite, let them know your details, BE POLITE, they WILL work with you. If a level 1 CSR denies your claim, ask to be transferred to the loyalty department and let them know you will be travelling with your family and you would like to use your phone overseas. From several years of experience, they will e-mail you the unlock codes for each phone in seperate e-mails within 24-48 hours. Just remember, be polite if they first deny your claim. It is the key to moving forward. Hope that helps.
Hey all
I know this is WAY off topic, please forgive me. I am looking for answers via the XDA super knowledge base.
So I'm contemplating leaving Sprint; like next month. I can get the same family plan for around $90 less per month with T-Mobile. As I'm recently fully disabled that savings is quite nice.
My question is, does Sprint take the value of the phone being returned and subtract that from the ETF??
I've been searching and I am unable to find an answer to that.
So; my ETF on my S3 line is $280; if Sprint values the S3 at $200. Would I have to pay just the difference ($80) ????
Has anyone here switched from Sprint that has experienced with the above mention scenario?
I thought about asking customer support but I fear they'd flag my account for asking about cancellation. (paranoid much, hehe)
Thanks for any light you can shed on this.
I'm glad I switched in the Salt Lake City, UT area. I'm pretty sure you keep the phone (Clean ESN) and that is part of the early termination fee. I would sell it on eBay before giving back to them, you'd get alot more money that way to the bill or otherwise.
Also look at this - http://shop2.sprint.com/en/services/termination_fee/early_termination_fee.shtml
More of a Sprint question no?

Yeah i'm leaning the eBay way. I've sold a good amount of things there.
I've read through their stuff, its most likely intentionally ambiguous when it comes to cancellation information.
Thanks for taking the time to answer its much appreciated
So Ive been getting the shaft by sprint lately and Im looking to restrict my phone so that it only runs on roaming and doesnt go off of the sprint network. I have been told that if your device is very roaming heavy then sprint will terminate your contract.
Does anyone know how to force my phone to constantly roam?
Anyone know of the best way to eat up data while roaming?
Thanks for any help. I know some of you may think Im shady but I have spent HOURS trying to work with sprint to get some help and they wont help me out and have even gotten rude so Im over it.

He isn't "trolling" you bud. You signed the contract so you agreed to deal with the problems that may happen during service. I have had a tower go down here before and texts/calls would not work whatsoever. I too wanted to just roam, but not for illegal purposes. I just wanted to have to ability to make calls IF NEEDED (yes, I would pay the roaming charges), and to text. So basically I just wanted my phone to work as a basic phone in case I needed it. All I did was just write a different PRL and I could text and call no problem, but I didn't use much data in case I was roaming (the PRL I used made my phone work but didn't say I was roaming). They fixed it pretty fast. He only said that because what YOU are trying to do is illegal and I think it is considered fraud. I would just pay out of it or find a work around.

i got suckered into changing to tiered when the "network optimization" was being threatened. Well after fighting to get it back since the 1st of the month, it finally happened last night. I now have unlimited data and a note 4 preordered on edge. im assuming i need to do the best buy sim trick even though it s preordered from verizon. basically use my current sim and not the one that comes with the phone? anyone been in a situation like this?

Be careful with the whole edge and best buy Sim trick. I've read in numerous forums where this worked temporarily but Verizon later forced the user into a tiered plan. Not sure if the user got unlimited back or not either way good luck man. Wish I could find a work around but it looks like full retail is my only option .

gcforreal- Thanks for pointing this out. I was half-tempted to try the sim trick, but I think I'll just take the 6 GB bribe instead.
I guess the only way to "upgrade" and "keep unlimited" if to do the iPhone trick, then sell it and use the proceeds to buy your Note 4 at full retail. I don't have the stomach for either method.

i dont know how much data everyone uses but if u use more than 10g a month on unlimited, the price of the phone pays for itself in about 8-9 months. on average, i use about 30g a month so paying $700 for a phone isnt a bad deal since ill be making that up in less than 3 months.
its only in the US that we're used to getting subsidized phones. everywhere else pays for the phone straight out. but then again, everywhere else in the world doesnt pay close to what the US consumers pay on a monthly basis on average.
