From my experience. The service here in nyc is great. I always have full bars it doesn't matter where I go. I live in the bronx and work in manhattan and never had a dropped call or bad reception. I'm not sure about any of the other boroughs thought. Tmoble does have volte.

Working perfectly fine here in Brooklyn, been in most corners of Manhattan and parts of Queens never experience any problem. Yes they have voLTE, HD Calls, WI-FI calling, Multiline (Digit) etc.
5 Boroughs T-Mobile works ?, even better when you USED THE UNLOCKED UFIRMWARE AND T-MOBILE (CP) or BETTER KNOWN AS MODEM. I GOT OVER A 100 MBPS DOWNLOAD SPEEDS AND HAVE THE PROOF. also my 3 S7 Edge RUNNING ANDROID 6.0 and 7.0 ALL RUN OVER 100 MBPS. HOW I KNOW, BECAUSE I MANAGED INVESTMENT PROPERTYS IN ALL 5 BOROUGHS. EVEN IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY I HAVE GOT OVER 80 MBPS DOWNLOAD SPEEDS. T-Mobile RUNS GOOD IN N.Y. CITY.

Also VERIZON WORKS GREAT TOO, THEIR SPEEDS IS NECK AND NECK WITH T-MOBILE. I HAD VERIZON SERVICE WORKING ON MY UNLOCK T-MOBILE S7 EDGE RUNNING VERIZON S7 EDGE FIRMWARE. IT WORK 100% AS A STANDARD VERIZON PHONE.

WHY ARE YOU YELLING???
I live in Brookyn, work in the City. Don't get dropped calls. Although, this is about carrier and not about the device.
Nah not yelling, just putting the words in big letters.
Also, what I have notice in running different FIRMWARE. When I flash the U FIRMWARE or EVEN T-MOBILE FIRMWARE, I get max LTE SPEEDS of 65 MBPS in certain areas. Then one day I flash T-Mobile CP on the U FIRMWARE, I got a 20 MBPS increase on download speeds and 10 to 15 MBPS on upload speeds. Was amazed by how much difference after doing that. Now my S7 Edge RUNNING ANDROID 7.0 U FIRMWARE and T-MOBILE CP, the speed is excellent. Now I did the same on my T-MOBILE S8+, the speeds are even higher on this device. So from now on I'll be FLASHING the FIRMWARE between device for better performance. Someone was saying something about the 4x4 QAM, I KNOW it as 256 QAM carrier aggregation. But definitely between the U FIRMWARE and T-MOBILE CP or MODEM allow the device to pull high network speeds. So I definitely recommended anyone who wants try it, only thing you loose video calls. I don't like video calls anyway, what's app works great. I prefer the higher speeds.
I've had mine for about a month now. I'm mainly between Brooklyn and New Jersey and havent dealt with any dropped calls... Wifi stays on for me throughout the day... Updated to the latest t-mobile firmware and the phone still works great... Way better than my iPhone did lol

Works fine in Buffalo, NY as well. I travel to NYC once in a while and the reception there is great. However, reception on I-90 is ****, even Spotify won't load the next song.
incredible service - no dropped calls - no delays in txts - avg data speeds are between 30-70 in most places...so like being on wifi.... even all over nj it is the same.... the only slowdown is a few blocks in s.i. near the outter br and on the nj trnpk around newark airport but i think all carriers struggle there a bit..
overall, great svc (much better than the junky Sprint network that i left 3mo ago)

Hello all!
Noob here, first post, so first and foremost please pardon any ignorance. I did search here as well as google without finding any significant results. I appreciate anyone who takes time to answer.
I recently bought an unlocked Galaxy S2x (989D) for use here in the USA on T-Mobile. I went with the 989D and not the 989 because I'm using a grandfathered T-Zones plan.
I rooted/flashed Juggernaut 5.0 through cwm, and the phone is working fine EXCEPT my download/upload speeds are lousy. Consistently 1.5Mbps down / 500Kbps Up MAX with 800-1200 ms ping via speedtest app from various parts of Maryland (Baltimore/DC corridor) and using different servers. My N1 has always tested faster than that in the same area, which is why I'm particularly concerned.
I tried flashing Telus KJ3, T-Mo KID and T-Mo KL1 modems found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1426001
But saw no improvement. I've also tried using the stock epc.t-mobile and the old internet2.voicestream APNs, with equally crappy results on both.
Is it just a matter of T-Mo having terrible speed over HSPA in this area, or is it possible that there's something screwy going on with the device/rom/kernel/radio? FWIW, calls and texts are fine, and wifi calling works as well. I've attached a few screenshots in case any of them might be helpful.
TIA!
hmm... you should read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514954
there's no spoon
highest speed i ever got was close to 10 Mbps in Canada 3G/3.5G networks
seems more like the area you live in, have poor Tmo coverage for data
That's disappointing, to say the least, especially since according to the coverage map, I'm smack in the middle of a giant blob of "4G Excellent" coverage. I'm still confused as to why my Nexus One would have better speedtest results. Perhaps HTC/Google FTW.
seriously???
Is this legit? Full 4G signal? I can't imagine how it's THIS slow. Does jugg 5.0 have any build.prop tweaks that could be farking with my data? Just threw my sim card into my N1 to compare and it's way faster.
@JoshD422, Did you ever figure this out?
[Q] Whats the difference between each of the radios?

I am also wondering about this same fact with a real Telus phone in Canada. I'm also wondering about the difference between the 3 radios that were provided with the Darkside.UCLE2 Beta 5 ROM. (Don't get me wrong, appreciate all the hard work from these guys, amazing where the T989 dev has come already!)
I tried all 3 radios, and get different speeds with each one. Blazes 4G radio I can't seem to tether, and then the T-mo radios I'm having issues with Bluetooth and even Data.
Could someone if you have a minute explain what the difference is between the radios and maybe suggest what radio would be best for us Telus users in Canada?
Cheers, TIA!

JoshD422,
I will be the first to tell you living in Toronto, that its completely unpredictable in Canada.
I've had areas if there is high use downtown I will get even worse results than that (seen a ping of over 1000ms ).
At the same time I can redo a speedtest about 200 metres away, and get results up in the 10 Mbps and pings of 45 ms. So I don't believe that part has to do with the radios but more the quality of service, and I'm in whats supposed to have the best service city in Canada.
Your problem definitely seems to be due to the T-Zones plan. I don't have that plan and I'm using an unlocked stock Telus T989D in Maryland and I get 2-4 Mbps down and 0.7-1.0 Mbps up

I am on a stock unlocked T989d in the Atlanta area and get similar speed to you. However, I only see the "3G" icon in my phone.

Yes, only "3g" icon in MD/DC area. I guess maybe perhaps this is not as fast as using the T-Mobile radio software that comes stock in the T989, but it's plenty fast for me. I don't think the "4g" capability is much faster, anyway.

I think the "4g" icon is purely cosmetic. I have an unlocked Telus T989d on Tmobile and my co-worker has the Tmobile T989 on Tmobile. We both did a Speedtest side to side and we both got ~12Mbps down, ~1.3Mbps up. My phone was showing the 3g icon, while his was showing the 4g icon. Both our networks showed up as HSPA. Both of us in our respective stock, un-rooted ROMs.
While T-Mo roms do tend to be a bit over zelus with the 4G icon, it is much faster than a 3G connection. Where I live in Orlando is a 4G area and I get over 20mbs download speeds and over 2mbps upload speeds..
Side note though.. it is funny that people still use "" or call it 3.5G when the T-Mobile network has been accepted as 4G for almost a year now .. I tried to find the artical but its being illusive today..

Officially, 4G is supposed to get 1000mbs peak download. Tmobile uses HSPA+ which peaks at ~80mbs. I think that is why people call it 3.5G or use the "4G" when talking Tmobile.
Well it's obvious that Verizon got the LTE in so many places but I've seen many speedtests of sprint showing their speeds and I was not impressed glad I switched from AT&T to Verizon.
Anyway could some sprint users post their speedtests results? and if you have LTE in you area on Sprint show them to
this is only out of curiosity I just wanna see the difference
This will have to wait as LTE is not yet up publicly for Sprint.
LTE if available at all will be in testing at best. Not even comparable.
I'm sure you can go rub one out to your speedtest results somewhere else though.
I can guarantee you VZW LTE will be faster. The quality of the network, and the fact that VZW owns so much spectrum, really makes it much faster, but do not doubt me, Sprint will have FAST LTE.

Absolutely wrong. VZW only uses the 700Mhz range to do LTE, it's true they do have a lot of coverage, but they also have a lot more phones out there meaning slower speeds as everyone is sharing the same towers. Coverage has NOTHING to do with speed.
Sprint on the other hand uses 1900Mhz, while with shorter theoretical range, it should be able to transmit faster than a 700Mhz signal would be able to.

yep same here, loving my pre paid wt mobile with the galaxy, best thing is I never have to turn on another radio to get fastest downloads if its there I just get it. Then agian I really dont need 20mbps+ download speeds Im not running my home network off my phone
I usually get into the mid 20's on my upload, but It's been slow today.
DL is decent but i see higher when people are asleep. its 3pm right now.
Here's my best Verizon test. It's usually in the mid 20's for download and teens for upload. Over 40 down from a server in Mexico, and I'm in the St Louis area... not bad.

Well as you can see in my sig that was my highest speed test ever
all I care that I can make calls / texts / listen to pandoria , sirius xm , di.fm , or winamp shoutcast so I am guessing few mbps is good enough for all of that as long as we have coverage that is the reason I dumped AT&T for Verizon
I have family plan so I have few dollars difference since I have it with my friends on AT&T we used to pay 63.50 each now it's 77$ but we got more data [4gb] and better coverage = win win

Verizon is win for me. I didn't like sprint or at&t in my area when I tried them. Verizon is the best I can get where I live. Way better coverage. Sprint is a joke in the phoenix area.
My VZ account currently:
5 lines
80.00 for talk and text share 700 (unlimited text)
48.75 per line with unlimited data, including all applicable tax and fees.
I actually like the pricing VZ gives (with unlimited data) 64.75 per line if dividing my bill.
I think all these 4G speeds are fine. Whether it is 10mbs or 40mbs you won't have a problem streaming good quality video. When I was with Sprint, I had Wimax all around me and I had no problems when it came to streaming video at high def, surfing the web, or streaming music so I am sure their LTE will be just fine.
Sprint's 3G is another story. I was not able to do anything on 3G. I wouldn't even attempt to stream a YouTube video on Sprint's 3G. Who had 20 minutes to wait for it to buffer? Now on Verizon, I am happy to say I can carry on business as usually on 3G and when I want that extra burst of HD video, 4G is everywhere.
So in reality, seeing who's 4G speeds are better really is pointless. If you stream a video over Sprint's LTE netwrok or Verizon's LTE network I am sure even if one has higher speeds of more then double you would not be able to tell anyway unless running an actual speed test.

not everyone uses their data for only surfing or streaming. I like to download the occasional torrent, some ranging in the GB file size. Data speeds seriously help and coverage does also especially when moving. I can start 4.37GB file download in Mesa and it will be finished when I arrive in Paradise Valley (30min drive roughly). without that high transfer rate and good coverage, that wouldn't happen.

Funny thing about that though, even though higher freqs do have the ability to transmit data faster, it makes you wonder why then LTE at 700MHZ is faster than 3G at a higher freq. Of course the data speeds you see almost depends on the bandwidth they have to offer and how many people are on too.
So is the T-Mobile Note II better than the AT&T one? I know it has a better 3G radio with quad band 3G that does 42mbps rather than the AT&T one that only does 21mbps and is only tri-band. How feasible do you guys think it would be to buy a launch day Note II on contract, immediately sell it on eBay and buy a T-Mobile Note II for the same price?
Plausible if you expect to get $650+tax for the AT&T note.
Is T-Mobile's coverage that bad in your area? If T-Mobile has good coverage in your area then why not just go for T-Mobile? It would make sense to go for Verizon LTE services for the large coverage and high speeds even with the Verizon premium price. But for me it makes no sense in going to AT&T if you have good coverage with T-Mobile. Both the price and speed differences between T-Mobile vs AT&T itself would turn me to T-Mobile and away from AT&T. The only thing that AT&T beats T-mobile is having a larger coverage area. But otherwise there is no reason to go for AT&T.
I just think you are trying to go the long way around. Which is not making sense.

I'm on contract with AT&T for another year so I'd have pay cancellation fees and what not.
And the T-Mobile service isn't very good in my area at all.. atleast it wasn't a year and a half ago.
Not to hog the thread, but, would a T-mobile Note 2 (once unlocked obviously), work on atleast HSPA speeds on AT&T - im not really too bothered about LTE, though obviously don't want the tmobile phone restricted to EDGE on at&t like iphones 4s are on tmobile _ this situation is the reverse of that scenario.
?
I have an option to buy a T-Mobile one for relatively cheap off a colleague, but want to use it on AT&T as thats the contract I have and T-mob don't have great reception in my house!!.
I know the 4G LTE in the T-Mobile Note II is currently disabled but... once enabled would it work on AT&Ts 4G LTE?

If you don't care about LTE, then get the T-Mobile one as that has 42mbps HSPA as opposed to 21mbps of all other Note II versions and it's also pentaband too so it'll work pretty much anywhere around the world

I'm considering the Note2 on all carriers even the international model if Multi-View doesn't come soon but last weekend tested the Note2 in a T-Mobile store & was impressed by the SpeedTest of 20 ( +/- 2) Mbps down & ~ 2 Mbps up (store is in a well covered area) & Friday night I was with someone where I'd more frequently use the Note2 & tested the network down on her original Galaxy S still pulling down ~10 Mbps down (+/- 5 with avg ~ 8 Mbps down-streaming quality video was great which I can't currently do with my Sprint EVO except off their network here on Wi-Fi) & still ~ 2 Mbps up.
So far I like T-Mobile speeds & plans (reasonably priced unlimited option should I need it though I usually but not always have access to fast Wi-Fi) yet I'm concerned they don't have the same coverage as AT&T (I'll also speedtest AT&T locally this week) so was considering getting the Note2 on AT&T & if not satisfied ($300 + $325 ETF) go get service on T-Mobile with option to go back to AT&T should I move. What limitations besides the 21 Mbps HSPA+ would I have if I get the AT&T model which would also offer me LTE ~ 20 miles away?

Appreciate your thoughts,

Here's my experience with T-Mo on a car trip from the NW to Midwest. The data was non-existent except on cities & towns, I'd say over 10,000. Where a data signal was available it was typically very good. I didn't speed test my note 2, but likely =/- 10Mbps. In the NW (Seattle area) I find some rural areas with poor data signal. My daughters house is on the edge of a town with pop of about 5,000. I have to go outside to get a descent data signal while she gets good signal inside with AT&T.
Personally I'm very happy with my T-MO service. I've been with then for 10 years, but only about 2 that I've been concerned with data, whereas previously I used primarily wifi and now using predominately data.
Hope with gives you at least one useful perspective.

Thanks:good:..confirms my interest in getting the AT&T model but use on T-Mobile if possible for its more flexible plans but less flexible coverage where I could switch to AT&T service should I expect to be outside solild T-Mobile coverage?
If you are asking about service go T-Mobile hands down. I have had both and ATT was horrible. Service was shakey, customer service was ridiculous. T-Mobile is all around better in my book

I will test to confirm but I think T-Mobile service will be faster on HSPA+ (LTE is 20 miles away & don't expect to get it here soon except for Verizon) & less expensive but I'm starting to suspect the potential for range anxiety (that people with electric cars often feel) when traveling out of metro areas hence consideration of AT&T model (which offers superior coverage as well as LTE in some markets now) to use on T-Mobile if possible?

My parents live in farm country about 40 miles out of the city and can't get service on Their ATT service, but my Tmobile is strong as if I were in Denver

I'm going to look into this further (the T-Mobile pamphlet they gave me last weekend still listed "America's Largest 4G Network) but I'm going to try to check it out again in a T-Mobile store now:
http://www.fiercewireless.com/story/t-mobile-drops-americas-largest-4g-network-claim/2012-07-18

"T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42 is the 4G dark horse. It's really fast, covers a lot of the country, and is inexpensive. We found it to be faster than Verizon LTE for downloads in 11 cities (T-Mobile didn't win, though, because Verizon had much faster upload speeds.) Outside cities, where T-Mobile has coverage, it blew away other 3G networks. But that's the key: T-Mobile's truly rural coverage is slimmer than AT&T's or Verizon's."

I've been following it for a bit, sadly, after 6 months of improvements, my service got worse. They upgrade towers, add more customers who use more data = no improvement at all.

That site isn't going to tell you anything about network vision upgrades that are rolling out, the upgrades the will truly make a difference. If you want information on these upgrade I suggest you head over to the s4gru.com forums.

My service has gotten somewhat better but it's only somewhat decent at 1am to 5 am lol. Kinda useless.
I'm surrounded by 3 towers (all within 5 to 10 miles) and still after the last round of "data enhancements" I average 300kb download on 3g. Closest LTE tower is about 17 miles away :\
Mine shows all kinds of improvements over the last several months. My 3g is as bad or worse that it has been since the 'upgrades'. 45kbps down is marginally faster than the first modem I owned some 12 odd years ago. Good thing I have unlimited data...One day they'll finish their LTE rollout in the podunk midwest towns and bring it to my area. One day...

If I got 300k I wouldn't complain...
I have lte and its great except their coverage isn't that great and when I drop down to 3g I get horrible speeds not even close to 1mb. Yet sprint says network vision is complete in my area. I call bull
I use sensorly from the app store. So far the maps are accurate in the NYC area. I can literally see the coverage updates as they go live. Im not pushing the app but its the only thing I can rely on anymore with the slow roll out of the LTE.

+1 on Sensorly app. Sprint 3G in my area runs between poor speed to unusable. No LTE here yet either.
It's funny that I see this post. I just did a speed test from downtown Chicago and got 36mbps(!). I then decided to browse the forums and I see this.
Yes my speeds have upgraded.

I was with a friend who has a new iPhone that was showing 5G. I have the dual SIM international version on ATT and I know it misses band 30 so I was interested to see just how much faster his network speed was. We both ran SPEED TEST and I got a miserable 15MB download and 10MB upload. Meantime.... He couldnt even get more than 2MB on both. He wasn't very happy! We tested web browsing and mine was faster. What a con!

It's not true 5G, it's 5GE it's just a fancier albeit deceptive way of saying 4G LTE+ (if I'm wrong on the LTE+ part my bad I know it's still 4G though) real 5G still has a little bit to go before it's full 5G

The 5gE will show up on the S10+. I saw it show up on my 9+.

You're absolutely right. They're basically pulling the same Stunt they did when the started labeling HSPA+ as 4G when it was in fact more like 3.5G. Total sham. In order to be considered 5G you need to have a minimum speed of 1Gps. I get about 540Mps on LTE+ in Canada. I don't think AT&T can even come close to those speeds. And it's not even 5G.

My wife has an Att S10+ and I have a G975F variant.
the status bar shose 5G - but speeds are just typical - however, I have noticed that it is faster than my phone/ I was outside the other day and my wifes phone got 120MB download and 75 MB upload - I did a speed test on my phone at the same spot and I only got 60MB down and 30MB up.
I think it might be because the G975F varient is missing one band that is on the ATT Variant. It isn't reallt 5G but it is a bit faster on ATT phones. I think becuase it is Enhanced LTE....hopefully some day we will be able to flash ATT CSC on the G975F phones....I
don't remember which band is missing from the G975F variant, but it does definately mean that devices that are from the F Varients are not as fast on LTE as the ATT PHOnes.

Yeaaaaaa I was right. But in all seriousness it's shady as hell business practice (but then again almost all the carriers in the US were guilty of it at some point)

AT&T should be held accountable by somebody for their scummy practices - or at least called out for it. It's ridiculous!

Are you living under a rock? The other 3 major carriers called them out on it already, months ago. There's even an xda article from earlier today where Sprint and ATT settled a lawsuit about misleading customers about 5g "E".

No. I just haven't seen it. Have you seen everything, everywhere?
This 5G stuff is fluff anyways. I live in a rural area with barely any LTE coverage. Will most likely never see 5G here. I deploy IOT hardware (autonomous air quality/meterological arrays, for example) and they all use 2G GSM hardware. They just post data to an offshore server. Point is not all applications need low latency gigabit wireless. That's what my Xirrus wifi is for.
And where LTE service is good, I'm seeing nearly 200Mbps /50Mbps (down/up) speeds with latency averaging in the mid 20s to low 30s. That's good enough for me. Just remove the stupid wifi needed to get big updates and we're good. With unlimited plans these days it's ridiculous to have to tether off another LTE device to get larger updates.
Att recently updated to 4x4 bands and 5ge is their way of showing it instead of something like 4g+
