keep 4g active when recieving call while tethering - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys. For few days i looked for way to keep my 4g conn active when tethering. When call is made to me it switches to 3g and breaks every game im playing. Iv tried disabling some services , blocking calls etc. Nothing worked. I have unlimited data so i play only over it to cut expenses on stuff. When call is blocked or redirected phone doesnt ring but conn still breaks. Any help would be nice. Btw provider doesnt support volte. Phone is h815

Well first step would be for your operator to support volte.

Simultaneous call and data

Just started using my Desire last night! Feeling good.
However...
Was just on a call, tried to use the Android Marketplace. Couldn't.
Got curious, and tried to use Google Maps mid call. Couldn't.
Tried to use the internet during the call. Couldn't.
Now, I'm on T-Mobile (UK) and have just come from a Nokia E71. With my E71 I could make a call and use Google Maps.
Am I missing something or is this bit of multitasking somehow not possible???
Please tell me I'm missing something!

A lot of carriers don't currently support simultaneous data and voice. For example, I have Sprint and it has no support for this - very annoying.
AT&T is the only one I'm personally aware that supports both talking and using data at the same time.
If it doesn't work for you, you're out of luck with your carrier.

Sprint is a CDMA network, and most CDMA networks don't currently support simultaneous voice and data.
Most GSM networks do support this when you have a 3G connection. The voice call is routed over 2G and the data over 3G. If your data connection drops down to GPRS or EDGE, you will lose data connectivity because most networks do not support simultaneous voice and data over 2G, though I'm told that they can be set up to do so, so I guess it's more down to bandwidth.
Regards,
Dave
I know that Sprint's CDMA has an issue with simultaneous data and voice. Which suck. And I know they are making good attempts to sort this out for the EVO, which is good.
But again, I've been doing this fine on my E71. The only thing I can think of, in relation to Dave's comments, is that for some reason, because the Desire can suck up more data, T-mobile have restricted it. Which would suprise me because, as Dave said, simultaneous voice and data is a feature of most GSM networks and has been for a while.
I have just tested that and it's true - the phone doesn't have simultaneous data and voice connection
Now normally I don't need that because if I talk, I talk and not browse the web, but even my freaking G1 could do both things at the same time. What the heck? It must be something HTC did.
One more reason to eagerly wait for root...
I don't see how this is a big deal. Why would you need to make a call AND browse the market place or look at maps etc? Surely it's something that can be done after the call even if it is receiving directions or whatever.

It's a big deal because:
1. HTC (or T-Mobile) has obviously done something to disable it because Android with GSM should have such functionality;
2. Older Android phones and even some "dumbphones" have that functionality
3. No point in browsing market while talking, but what about looking up maps while talking? - That was even one of G1's selling points.
I have often been on a call and used the internet or searched Maps. So it's something that I am quite used to doing.
Though I thought I'd get an answer straight from the horses mouth and have emailed HTC support just now. I'm hoping they give me good news...
False alarm. This only happens on GPRS, which is normal. Simultaneous data and voice connection can only happen on 3G as explained in Android Forums.
and of course correctly explained by Dave in post #3 here.

Kind of tired of explaining this one but here are the 2 use cases:
- you're talking with someone on the phone and they ask you for directions, look something up on the internet, see if you received their email, etc, etc
- and even more importantly, when my rooted phone acts as a WiFi access point with android-wifi-tether and someone calls me, my freaking Inet disappears until I'm off the phone. This is the more annoying of the 2 use cases.
Well, this was their reply:
"If you start the call being connected through 2G, then yes the internet will then work. But as soon as the signal goes over to 3G then the internet connection and usuage will be turned off.
When it comes to wifi, if you are in a call and you are connected to wifi, then you should be able to surf.
Hope this answers your questions.
Thank you for contacting HTC. "
I did get concerned for a second. I've just tried the wifi and call which worked. And I just tried a call again, with wifi turned off and it worked, even though it didn't work before.
I just hope it routes voice and data in a way that doesn't trip me up in the future. I.e. voice over 2G if I'm trying to access data.
So yes, false alarm.
And funnily enough I just now got a call from Carphonewarehouse asking me if I'm having a problem sending texts as some Desires do indeed have a software fault where they have no Service Centre number for messages. For once, I've skipped the faulty units!
Cheers guys. Sorry scare anyone.
lol.
Whoever it was at HTC got their 2G and 3G mixed up.
what they meant to say was if it goes down to 2G then it'll stop.
You'll be ok in general, as long as you have 3G signal wherever you are. If you've only got 2G, you'll have to hang up, find out and then call back!
the SMSC shouldn't be a problem though, just program it in manually. Not worth sending a phone back for unless it fails then as well.
Even if I'm on 3G/HSPA, when I call someone, as soon as the call is connected, my data connection disappears (only shows bars, no G, 3G, or H) and I can't browse the web or use maps while in-call :-/
ok, well that's not right. The bars should only disappear if you turn the mobile data off. it should not get turned off by a call. Even if i try it when in G, the bars stay showing, just no data comes till i hang up the call.
If the bars are disappearing, something else is going on.
It could be a local network issue. maybe it's an old transmitter that missed an update or something...?could possibly be a full tower.
I know that a few years ago, the towers would kick off data connections to allow more airtime for voice calls which have priority, but i don't know if that's still relevant on 3G.
This was a hot discussion back when the Hero came out as well.
In the end I think it comes down to the network of your carrier. Some people report they can internet and call at the same time. Others say when they are internetting on their phone, a call is directly forwarded to their voicemail etc.
I'm afraid it's a combination between how your carrier configures their network and on what connection you are on (3g, 2g etc).
Yeah it's false alarm no #2 -- must be a spotty 3G at my house. I went to the city centre and tried it there -- worked like a charm.
Though it's a bit weird as 3G speed is not bad at all at my house, but when I call, data connection goes off :-/
Maybe at the city center you got more cells in range than in your house. Means your carrier got more available bandwith
I think reception gets spotty. Sometimes voice and data works, sometimes it doesn't. At home in my bedroom I can get H connection, 20 meters away I can't.
I think the important thing is that the phone is capable. The rest is just pinning down exactly the situation that we want to avoid.

[Q] Voice calls and data at the same time?

Hello,
I just got this phone yesterday. Upgrading from HTC Evo 4g LTE.
Today I was on a conference call and tried to access the web and could not. I noticed I did not have the LTE or any indication of mobile data networking ( associated icons). Does this phone handle voice and data at the same time ( not on wifi ).
If not I will have to return this in disbelief.
Thanks
Mike
Please close this thread. After searching i found this thread:

Doesn't seem like you can use data and voice together. A work around looks like hangouts dialer. I just downloaded it. Error " phone calling is not supported for this account with this version of hangouts ". Guess i'll have to use the search field to see what/if anything can be done.
Even though I got that error message I was able to make a call. Worked on Wifi and LTE network....this might work out.....

This is a Sprint Spark limitation. All Sprint Spark phones are limited to 1 radio at a time, so you can't have 1 channel running voice and another running data. When you are making a voice call your phone drops down to 1xRTT. The up side is better battery life and the ability to use 800mhz, 1900mhz and 2500mhz LTE (one at a time), the down side is no Simultaneous Voice and Data (unless you are on WiFi).
In the long term everyone will move to Voice over LTE, which will allow data and voice simultaneously again. There is no time frame for this yet with Sprint and the Note4 was listed in the FCC specs as not supporting VOLTE.
Do all new sprint phones have spark? Any time frame for volte?
I had heard whether it's true or not Intel late 15 early 16 for the start of roll out of volte.

Thanks everyone. Guess i will have to see if i can do without data while using voice.
Get a note3 pretty close to the same phone ya I know there are some major difference but if u really need date and voice that will be way more important than any lil difference between phones

Thanks @sliverr7x, I would do that, but i want the newest available phones.

Missed calls not showing, and late SMS

I'm having issues when on WiFi and LTE Enabled, the phone does not get any phonecalls, missed phonecalls do not show and SMS arrive late (my carrier has the option to notify me missed calls, but yesterday the message got me 10 minutes after the call).
After searching, I've found out something similar happened to nexus 4-5, when WiFi is ON, LTE is ON, and the phone is in Sleep Mode but nothing on Zenfone 2. Have a friend with ZF2 that confirmed it happens sometimes but we doubt if it' s a phone issue or carrier issue.
Getting the network mode to 2G/3G seems to fix it, but it misses the LTE
try to restart the phone (?)
I reboot my phone every couple of days, but the bug sometimes appears in the phonecall right after rebooting
What messaging app are you using? I know I miss messages from my wife when I had textra in the "off" state with autostart manager. When I told it to start when the phone boots it started getting the text messages and mms's right away. Are you using a VPN or do you have weak signal and what firmware are you using?
make sure phone is allowed 2g/3g/4g all. If you restrict it to 4g only you will face such issues.

I usually reboot in the mornings. But I US Google voice so the issues never really show up.
Stock FW (was on 168, now I'm yesterday patched versopm) , Stock SMS, no VPN, and set to 2G/3G/4G
As I said, the problem is fixed when I'm on 2G/3G, but it kinda loses the point to have an LTE plan
can you test with 4g on and wifi off. What carrier are you on. Because carriers can use wifi and lte combo in case you have same carrier providing both facilities.

I'm on Uruguay Antel and it does not offer any combo whatsoever, voice calls are usually switched over to 3G when I'm on LTE, but somehow the network or my phone fails to switch sometimes

No VOLTE/Advanced calling.

I picked up this phone a few days ago and I just noticed that VOLTE wasn't working like it should. The settings menu shows that I have the option on, but everytime I make a call or receive a call it instantly switches from 4g to 1x, and therefore I don't have simultaneous voice and data. Anyone have this issue too?
I checked my Verizon account to see if that feature is enabled for my line. Advanced calling shows that VOLTE is on for calls and video chat. Turning it on and off doesn't change anything, turning wifi calling on and off doesn't affect it. I've tried rebooting, and no luck. Seems like a software issue?
I noticed this on a call today as well. Subscribing...
Perhaps the person on the other end needs it as well? I've found calls between my girlfriend and I would switch from HD to non-HD and it seemed like it was due to service on her end. Just a thought. Its actually only happened a couple of times to me.

No luck with that one either. I've tried calling other lines on my plans and I got the same results. My S5 did a pretty good job maintaining HD Voice every time I made a call to those lines where LTE coverage was available.
I called CS and they didn't say it was a common problem, but they put in a report pretty immediately for me and should have someone contacting me the next 24-48 hours.
Just a quick update. I didn't do anything, I used my phone as is and it just started switching to HD voice and maintaining LTE while calling. So either they did something on their side, or the phone is just a little buggy.
I have never had that VoLTE icon pop up on my phone but if I look in my recent calls list I do see a Wifi icon on some of the calls.. I assume this is VoLTE??

That's WiFi calling.
I have used WiFi calling and it seems to work alright. Is this the same as VoLTE? If it is not how do you enable VoLTE?
I just found it in settings, it is enabled however I have never seen any kind of an icon that it is working. How do I know if it is or isnt?
Where is the setting for VoLTE in Settings? I am not seeing it anywhere.
EDIT: A google search showed me it should be in call settings, but it is not there. Any help much appreciated.

No internet when I'm on voice call

Hi folk, so I've something strange: when I'm on voice call (make or receive) my network change from 4G to H/H+ and internet doesn't work. When call finishes, network go back to 4G and I'm able again to surf internet.
I called my mobile company, Vodafone IT and they told me it's a phone problem (they don't use VoIP) so I contacted Google assistance but since my phone is magisked they can't help me.
Any idea?

This is a normal behavior and has nothing to do with your phone or Magisk: If your carrier does not support VoIP, the phone has to switch to 3G or even 2G to make the phone call. After the call has ended, it switches back to LTE.
I know that this can be a PITA, especially when you are supposed to take part in a Skype or Webex meeting with screen sharing and you are sitting in a hotel with bad WIFI. Then you use the phone as WIFI hotspot. As soon as you call in, your web meeting is unreliable.
Been there, done that. There is no way around this, the only thing which works for me is to take part in the call via my notebook instead of calling in via the phone. Then LTE stays - as long as nobody calls you
@BabelHuber thank you for your answer.
But why this happens?
Why isn't possible to have call and 4G/LTE at same time?

Because the LTE standard simply does not support voice calls.
Hence if you don't have VoIP, the phone has to switch to 2G or 3G. The alternative would be not being able to perform voice calls at all!
