question about display - Moto Z Play Questions & Answers

Hey folks
I was wondering if there is anyone using this device without protective glass for display..and if so, is there any smudges or scratches happened to it?
I am asking coz i am not really fond of using those even though i am currently using it with the glass. But it takes away that feeling for me.

Yes I use with no protection on the glass for the same reason and have no issues at all. As long as you take care of it and not not drop, smash or throw it you should be fine.

No screen protector...

Anybody had any issues using the GN without a screen protector?
I've seen one or 2 threads mentioning scratches on the screen but nothing from people using it normally without one on.
And i do remember that early video of somebody going mad with a key on one
So what do you guys reckon?

I didnt use one as i hate screen protectors ..... but then i noticed scratches so now i do
The glass doesnt seem that tough sadly. I was very careful.
I have no idea how easy it is to scratch glass
I'm coming from a Nokia N900...which had a resistive screen, so the front was plastic! In 2 years use i only got 1 major/noticeable scratch on it that happened early on due to my own stupidity, was always kept in a leather case...
But N900 mainly used the hardware keyboard for text input...but always used nails for pushing on small things in the browser...
so i'd think glass would be more scratch resistant than palstic but like i said, i have no reference for glass use!
Personally I hate screen protectors but I noticed a really faint scratch on the screen after a week of owing the phone and put on a Zagg screen protector. Can't same I'm very happy with how the screen now feels but you get use to it and I don't want to risk ruining the awesome screen.

Nobody "likes" screen protectors.
They're like condoms, you don't put it on because you like it, it's a weighing of risk vs reward

There was one I had for an ipod, long time ago. It was a thin plastic sticker type ..not that crappy squishy type. How I wish I could find those again. If you cleaned the screen properly and put it on right you couldn't tell there was a protector
As for now I run naked. This screen is silky smooth and I don't want to lose that

Yeah I am really scared about getting a scratch but this screen is SOO responsive, and it doesnt get finger prints very easily so im going no protector, still scares me though -___-

[Q] Factory Installed Screen Protector?

Does the Xperia Play come with a pre-installed scratch protector?
I do notice on my play that there seems to be a lip on the edge of my screen like theres one there.
I called Sony support, and they say they don't ship them out with with anything and that it must have been my provider, Rogers, that put it on. Which also soudns weird.
I just wanna know if there really is one there, I want to take it off and replace it. But I don't want to tear off something I shouldnt. I don't have any clue about phone hardware, I might be ripping of the digitizer or something.
Sony says they don't put one on, and Rogers says they don't. I wanna replace it because of a scratch.
Anyone have any insight?

Ok so apparently its to protect against glass flying everywhere. But is it safe to remove it? I plan on putting a clearcoat scratch guard on it. wouldn't it be the same thing?
Sent from my R800a using XDA App
Here's sony's official stance on the screen: http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/static/webguide/xperiaplay/en/Using-the-touch-screen.html
And to answer your question, yes, adding an aftermarket scratch guard will also keep glass from flying around...
If you read through all 11 pages (LOL) of the thread Michealtbh mentioned, you'd find quite a few opinions on the pros and cons of removing the shatter-guard.
Thanks for the info.
But that link is talking about that peice of plastic that comes with all phones. It has the little flap that lets you pull it off. You know the one EVERYONE tries to keep on their phone as long as possible till they get a real scratch protector, but just comes off and is covered is dust?
Still it answered my main question. I'll wait till I get the clearcoat to remove it.
I didn't post the sony link about the plastic sheet. Rather that not having ANY film on a glass screen is kinda dangerous. But don't all the other gorilla glass phones come without a shard-guard? What happens when they break? and a piece of glass injures someone or something...
I use mine without a screen protector, I found when removing the pre-installed screen protector, the screen looks much more vivid. Of course I'm using a soft case to prevent scratches.
I read up on it, The play doesn't use gorrilla but mineral glass.
So what you're all saying is I can take off the film and ill be fine? I just have to watch out for glass shards if I shatter my phone.

The iphones use gorilla and i know of quite a few of them that have cracked in a major way from minor drops.
Thing about the shard-guard is that it won't actually prevent the glass from shattering. If the impact is severe enough and at the right (wrong?) angle, it will crack, no matter what is stuck on it. Just the film will keep shards from flying. Kinda like what happens when a car windshield breaks. That's different though, it's laminated glass i think.
just bought a expertsheild for £7 waiting for it to come gonna change the stock anti shatter protector with it.
thank you all!
rly need to know it, cuz I wanna remove it, but was not sure of xD

For Those With Cracked or Scratched Screens

I have had my SGS3 since July and I have had a screen protector on it except for 1 week and in that time the phone got 3 nice scratches on it.
I am anal with my phone as I have a screen protector on it as well as one on the back and a rubber case over it also, so this is not a case of
being careless.
I put a post on Corning's Gorilla Glass 2 Facebook page and I got a reply saying basically Get in touch with Samsung as Corning can't do
anything, but if I want to discuss the problem further, contact them at [email protected]
Why doesn't everyone who has had problems with their screen contact them and maybe they will see this isn't an isolated incident.
This is what I wrote and what they replied...

Why is the Gorilla Glass 2 on the Samsung Galaxy S3 less resistant to scratching than the original Gorilla Glass on the original Galaxy S?
My 5 month old $650 Galaxy S3 has 3 nice scratches on the screen when my screen protector came off and I didn't get the new one for a
week. This is not right for a device that costs so much. Corning should be looking into these problems.
I have heard many more stories of scratches and cracks on the screen of the S3. Does this mean I will have to stay away from products with
Gorilla Glass from now on?

Hi Ian. So sorry you've had a problem. It’s hard to say what might have happened with your phone. While our
glass is tougher and significantly more damage resistant, it’s not scratch proof. You might want to check with Samsung to see if there is a
warranty. If you'd like to talk more about this, please e-mail [email protected]. Hopefully this helps.

Here is a petition I started in hopes that there is a possible solution to our problems.

Have as many people as you know to sign this, it might be our best bet to show how many of us are affected.

I've had my phone without a protector for the last month or so and have zero scratches
Same thing here. What did the damage? Keys in pocket, pen, angry ex? It helps build a case if you know the exact cause if the damage

My gorilla glass is outstanding. Dropped without a case/screen protector flat down about a meter onto wavy tiles and it didnt even scratch. I also dropped it on its side from my pocket from chair a couple times and its still flawless. Maybe I'm lucky.
Yes, most people will respond that their phones are in great condition, but this is for those who have had trouble with
the screen.
I am very protective of my phone. It was scratched in the (1) week I didn't have a screen protector on it. My original SGS's
screen was in new impeccable condition when I sold it after using it for 2 years, so why is this new phone scratched after
only 5 months?
Ian
There's lots of ways to scratch glass, a bit of grit or sand in your pocket ETC .. i wouldn't risk using my phone without a protector for even one day.
Might have to eventually just accept you scratched your phones screen.
I too have been very careful to not scratch my screen. I am fanatical about clean hands. The smallest partical of dust seems to be able to scratch the screen. As much as this phone cost, you would think they would throw in even the cheapest screen protector to hold you over untill you can get something better. Am i being too petty?

I find a good quality screen protector is not even slightly noticeable on the screen & in no way affects use, i have no idea why they don't supply one.
I am also amazed they advise against using them in their literature.
The screen on my Galaxy S3 is great! I've had mine for over 2 months without ever having a screen protector on it & I don't have 1 scratch on my phone!!! I also am very protective of my phone! Seems to be pretty good to me.

Scratches on screen

Any one else starting to notice that there screen is pretty easily scratched? I previously had iphones and was actually less careful with them and noticed they stood up alot better to scratches than my note. It all started with a small but somewhat noticeable scratch, bit not it seems to be picking up small scuffs here and there. How is everyone else doing. I am usually against screen protector s bit it seems like that may be the only route. Wondering if its too late.

I always advocate putting screen protectors in all my devices. Getting a scratch on the note 2 will bug me till no end. If you don't want more scratches then get a screen protector, I got the 3 for ten bucks and should last me a couple of months.
I noticed the same thing after a relatively short time as well. I quickly bought the only screen protector that was available to me here in Sweden. Copter! That was a big mistake and I quickly replaced it with a cheap hard plastic variant that cost next to nothing.I am very pleased with it. It almost feels the same as naked. The copter screen projector felt like there was Vonney on the screen. It was also taking marked by the S- Pen.
That sucks ....my screen is un scratched and I go bare back (no case) lol..
●○●○takin a crap as we speak●○●○
My screen is naked simply cause I haven't found a screen protector that I like... But I have a quality flip cover from zenus so it stays pretty safe.

Any idea what's been causing your scratches? I've been using my Note 2 heavily for two months, carrying it in my pants pocket, no case or screen protector, and the screen is still perfect.

I would say general use, I have acquired about 3 scratches so far. Very frustrating, I moved over from an iPhone as well and never used a screen protector. Looks like i will be replacing this glass and installing a screen protector. :banghead:

If general use caused the phone to scratch, then we'd all have some scratches after extensive unprotected general use. Prior to Gorrilla Glass, that was indeed how phones were. But not these days.
The reason I'm asking is that if we could figure out what, specifically, caused the scratches, that might help all of us avoid scratches in the future.
One question: when you carry the phone in your pocket, are you careful to keep the screen facing inward (toward your leg) rather than outward?
Lol maybe some sand in the pocket

Yes, I carry it in my back pocket facing inward. I never carry anything in my back pocket so they stay free of debris. The gorilla glass is soft enough to scratch easily. The iPhone is hard glsss it is going to almost break before it scratches.
Sent from my Note Monster!
The gorilla glass will scratch when it comes in contact with somthing "harder" then the glass ex. Sand .... when I slide my keys across the screen nothing happens, no scratches

FWIW, I didn't use a screen protector (largely because I cant get one on w/o dust) for most of the time with my Note I, and it never got any scratches on the screen. I always made sure I kept it in its own dedicated pocket in pants/purse which was clear from debris. I currently don't have a screen protector on my Note II, just a flip case w/ tpu mod.
Jeans have rivets. Perhaps you are catching your screen on them when you push & I pull your note in & out of your pocket? Just a thought.

Thanks, that's useful to know; it might possibly explain our different experiences. I've never been willing to put my phone in my back pocket--I'm afraid the pressure when I sit down could crack or scratch the screen. Also, my back pockets aren't deep enough to hold the Note 2 without part of it protruding.
Lesson to be learned...it doesn't matter how careful you are, scratches can and usually do happen. All it takes is literally a spec of sand and you will be a very unhappy customer.

Oneplus 3 back durability

Hi all,
I'm wondering how durable the metal back of the OP3 is and how easily it scratches. For some reason I'm really afraid that the back scratches easily, even when I'm just putting down my phone on the table or something like that. I'm using a case right now but the OP3 just feels much better without a case, so maybe you can convince me that it's more durable than I think? Has someone used his OP3 without a case for a good amount of time and can tell how good the back survived?
I think the back it pretty durable due to aluminium but i am really worried about the camera bump. I use a think clear case which doesn't cover camera bump .I put my phone on table mostly. Anyone who are using this phone without cases can share their experience the built quality of this phone and also the camera bump. Will the camera glass scratches easily?
hi
it's already been 4 months for me without using any case. I'm a typical that care my phone, my pants pocket just for phone only without other things and when I put the phone down in the table I did it slowly. for my experience it's been pretty well, no scratches in my back phone and the camera lens still perfect, all is still perfect except a couple dents because I drop it. and the metal really feel so great in the hand

put a case on it if you worry for scratches before you regret.
used mine (before replacement) few weeks without case, got some scratches, but fairly visible. really durable housing. but better at outdoors use with case, alluminum is really bad looking when dented/scratched.

If it's only scratches your afraid of I would advice you to buy a dbrand skin. Using it from the beginning and love it, it also makes it less slippery.

Yeah, get a dbrand skin. Get one that just covers the back and it's great to avoid the slippery part of the phone. Tried a couple of cases but it added too much bulk to the phone. Phone has been dropped a few times but no scratches.
