Hi all,
I'm wondering how durable the metal back of the OP3 is and how easily it scratches. For some reason I'm really afraid that the back scratches easily, even when I'm just putting down my phone on the table or something like that. I'm using a case right now but the OP3 just feels much better without a case, so maybe you can convince me that it's more durable than I think? Has someone used his OP3 without a case for a good amount of time and can tell how good the back survived?
I think the back it pretty durable due to aluminium but i am really worried about the camera bump. I use a think clear case which doesn't cover camera bump .I put my phone on table mostly. Anyone who are using this phone without cases can share their experience the built quality of this phone and also the camera bump. Will the camera glass scratches easily?
hi
it's already been 4 months for me without using any case. I'm a typical that care my phone, my pants pocket just for phone only without other things and when I put the phone down in the table I did it slowly. for my experience it's been pretty well, no scratches in my back phone and the camera lens still perfect, all is still perfect except a couple dents because I drop it. and the metal really feel so great in the hand

put a case on it if you worry for scratches before you regret.
used mine (before replacement) few weeks without case, got some scratches, but fairly visible. really durable housing. but better at outdoors use with case, alluminum is really bad looking when dented/scratched.

According to this video, the camera lense seems to be very durable.

I ordered my OP3 the moment it got released and I'm using it without a case since I got it. No scratches whatsoever, still looking exactly the same as on day one.
Keep in mind that I am a person who takes care of his devices ?

If it's only scratches your afraid of I would advice you to buy a dbrand skin. Using it from the beginning and love it, it also makes it less slippery.

Yeah, get a dbrand skin. Get one that just covers the back and it's great to avoid the slippery part of the phone. Tried a couple of cases but it added too much bulk to the phone. Phone has been dropped a few times but no scratches.

So I was wondering, would I be protecting my One X better with a hard case, or a soft case?
I am looking to order my accessories ahead of the phones delivery, but have never had a case on a phone before so have no prior experience. The clear HTC hard shell looks nice, but would I be better with a soft one?
Also, is there a general consensus on the best company to buy cases from?
I can understand why people want want to protect their shiney new X with a hard case but it just adds bulk to an already large device and wouldnt want to spoil its good looks would you?
I've gone for the official slip case and insurance, if I drop it I lose it

Hmm actually, a slip case might do.. my concern isn't really about when it is in my hands so much, just from dropping my bag, or putting my feet up on a train where it could slip out a pocket. I have only ever dropped my Milestone while walking along with it without actually using it at the time.
Are you going with a screen protector?
Nah not going to bother with one of those either.
If you're ordering from the UK then this is the cheapest I found for the official slip case. Most I found are around £15 but this is £9.95 with free postage. Arrived 2 days after ordering as well.

This case also has micro-fibers to help clean the screen, haven't managed to test it yet though..... Amazon.co.uk reports my X should be with me tomorrow

A slip case will help protect it in a bag or pocket from scratches caused by other stuff, like keys or whatever else you may have in there. Falling out of pockets will most likely occur without the slip case - it will slip out of that as well, and then not be protected. Slipping out of hands it will also not be protected (although I did read you said you weren't worried about that, this is what happens if it does.)
I have a blackberry from work in a pouch, don't care if it scratches but the pouch keeps it away from too much harm. I wouldn't want my brand new One X to dent or scratch just yet, it's too shiny and new for that, and that screen is sooo wonderful. I most definately will be using a case and a screen protector - you can always remove those when not needed. I never used a screen protector on my HD2, and it only ever got one tiny scratch on the glass in two years of intensive use (even dropped it a couple of times). It got that scratch however within a few weeks of my getting that phone, and bugged me since, even though it was hardly visible.
Cant stand any hard/soft cases. Slip cases all the way for me and you protect the whole phone as well

Why would you need a screen protector on a device that has Gorilla 2 glass? Seems kinda pointless if you look at the endurance tests they put it through online. Unless you plan on taking a screw driver or chisel to the screen , I think you will be just fine.
Hello,

It depends on how careful you are with your phone, but I would definitely recommend a case and screen protector to avoid getting scratches, if nothing else.

That depends on how much protection you want and if you mind covering up the back of the phone (it's nicer than most phones so some people rather not).

That's the one I have, and I like it a lot. Protects the sides and the back, without covering the aluminum body.

I never have much issue with screen scratches (usually) but I'd still err on the side of caution and do at the very least a screen protector. I'm going to replace my ZAGG (which I'm hoping is just scratched and not a crack on the screen ) with one of those fancy shmancy glass screen protectors with the rounded edges.

TPU skin is good enough if you have good reflexes.
While it is falling, you'll probably break its fall by hitting it up. Plus you can find absolutely clear TPU skins.
A case is a must, screen protector is not.
What I do is whenever I get a brand new phone, I always start with a good protective case and a screen protector. After a few months, I gradually get thinner cases and usually end up with those 0.3-0.5mm thin cases that makes the phone feel nice and less bulky. If you plan to rock the phone naked, I'd recommend a phone pouch.

Thank you very much for the quick response I'm still searching for a good frame or case, is it true that the origin HTC bi color case leaves scratches on the phone I won't believe it .....?! I also hope that the black version is scratch resistant some people said not......I just talked with a Vodafone assistant to change the black against the silver but he said to me that himself have the black one and I looks quite better and after two month usage without any case he have no scratches. I'll take the black one, it comes next week and I will give you a first impression.

Its not REALLY a must IMO. The phone actually holds up very well. Yesterday i purposefully put the phone in the same pocket with a bunch of coins and it scratched the aluminum but the scratches wiped right off. If you drop things than that would be a different story at aluminum can easily dent :good:
That was my point also ... it looks a little exaggerated to say that a case is a must.
I intend to use the phone "naked" indoors. Any case will practically ruin the nice feeling of the phone itself. Of course, if you drop it then there are chances to ruin the nice finish.
I'm also using the phone outdoors, fr sports. For that purpose I ordered a trident kraken ams ... I hope it will do the job.
P.S.: I saw that a OEM housing is "only" 50 bucks, free shipping ... I guess I'll buy one just in case .
I would say that if you carry your phone in your pocket a case is a must. I generally like to go case-less (especially with a phone this pretty), but after having my One slip out of my pocket on a couple of occasions, I ended up getting a case (Poetic Atmosphere; the rubberized edges keep it from slipping out). If you intend on getting a pouch of some sort, I think case-free is fine.
Also, I don't have a screen protector and have no scratches, though I tend to be pretty gentle with my phones.

On Etradesupply, the OEM housing is only like 30 bucks.
I say a TPU case is a must because:
1) You WILL drop it at some point, it's anodized AL, not grippy plastic.
2) The case provides a lip, so if you put your phone face down, the screen won't touch the surface & scratch from w/e dirt is there.
3) The case will also keep the camera lens (or the anodized back) from touching any surfaces.
4) I wear a ring, and if I don't put a case on, the ring scratches ONTO the phone. That's not good.
If you're REALLY careful, then none of these matter. but it's hard to be perfect.
Besides, when I'm in bed, I can just quickly remove the case for a little bit. It feels nice.
This phone is just too good looking to cover up, IMO. I've been going naked since day one I don't have a single scratch on it. The aluminum housing is solid and whatever glass HTC used really resists scratching. My One X screen got covered in microscratches pretty quickly, but I haven't seen anything on this phone.
Just treat it with care and you can forget the case. CNET tried to destroy their test phone and couldn't do it.
I have a double dip case bought at once with the phone. Well .. the feeling simply does not compare with the case on. It just loos cheap and plastic'ish ... is worse than galaxy S4 actually. So, with all the risks involved I will go "naked" while in normal use and I will use the kraken ams for outdoors. That's all ...
I only like corner protection. I don't care about the back.
I used to have a screen protector on this but I don't like it, it doesn't make the display look as nice. I have since taken it off and have not gotten any scratches, not even micro ones. I think this display is more tough than previous GG2 screens. I had the ONE X+ and it scratched easily.

I respectfully disagree, as will most in this forum that Android is horrible.
Maybe you can post what apps you are looking for and other users can tell you if there are equivalent apps.

The short answer is yes, it can be damaged. Gorilla glass is not a guarantee against scratches -- it sure helps when you put your phone in a pocket with keys, coins and stuff, but a tiny grain of sand can still leave a scratch on it (not saying it necessarily will, but it certainly can). The back cover is relatively easily scratched and scuffed, especially in the corners (I have some visible wear marks on it, but don't have a second camera to take a photo right now). The bezel on this phone can also easily get nicked, as the plastic is pretty soft.
So, I would definitely recommend some protection, if you care about the appearance of your phone. I personally decided against using screen protectors quite a while ago, for number of reasons (I still use it on my tablet, but not on phones), and I just try to be careful with the screen. So far, so good. But a good case for me is a must. It also makes the OG easier and safer to handle, as the naked phone is quite thin and slippery. There is a lot of decent cases available for our phone. You can also take a look in the Accessories forum for some first-hand reviews and comparisons.

Yes still gorilla glass is not fully guaranteed
Yes, I think using a case is needed because a few months ago I didn't have a case, so my phone fell and now it has a broken corner. Now I use a hard silicone case.
I have not bought a case and mine is marked because of falls. I'm not happy with it. Buy a case .
Yes, I am using nikkin case.
I am using case and screen protector for more than 2 years and my phone looks almost like a new one
Is anyone here using an OP3/3T without a case? Since the camera protrudes out of the body, I wonder how durable is the camera housing? Can/does it wear off if using the phone carelessly? I have a spigen case for the phone, but the phone is so much more beautiful without it. but again, i'm kinda worried about that camera housing since it protrudes out of the body quite a bit.

I'm using OP3 for slightly over a year now (bought at release) without a case. Camera is not an issue at all, there's absolutely no trace of wear on and around it, still looks like brand new.
Aluminum housing however is easily dented, so try to avoid drops and bumps with edges of the phone. But that's only cosmetic, no actual durability issues.

This phone is the most slippery phone I've ever held in my hand. If you don't have a case, and you don't drop it, I feel like you're pretty lucky. I got a case for this thing as soon as I held it and it almost slid out of my hands.
Just my experience. I have a little clip on case that doesn't add bulk, and it's still easy to hit the left side menus in so many apps, but adds some texture to make it easier to hold.
Looks like there is a plastic strip around the screen before the aluminium bezel as mine after just 2 days with a case has fine scratches already be careful peeps will annoy some.

I was supposed to create a thread regarding this but yes, I can confirm my P20 got scratched on the plastic strip surrounding the the screen as well!!! It is annoying!! why the heck did they use glossy plastic instead of the matte (like on the iPhone X)!!!! Mine actually was covered with case since day 1 but the friction on the case caused this!
SO.... ANYTHING THE TOUCHES THE PLASTIC WILL CAUSE IT TO GET SCRATCHED. PERIOD. Screw Huawei!
I just noticed that, the plastic is pretty thick, about 1mm, and I though it was a curve glass that run right down to the metal, also do note the metal around the back camera is also very easy to get scratched.

I have issue with p20 after a week use with fulltime case on. Very poor quality build.
oh well, I just have to live with the scratches. I'm just pissed that Huawei overlooked this issue when they did their QA.
Same here. Very bad quality. Shame on you, Huawei.
I have the issue of the back panel getting really scratched uo even with a case on permanently
Yep. I got the same issue. Damn it. I've been carefull with the phone all the time. It is perfect except that area u mentioned.
that's just stupid for a 700 USD phone.
Can anyone share a screenshot of these scratches you guys are talking about? I've had mine for about 3 weeks now (factory case+screen protector on) and don't see these scratches.
Some pics
any fix for this? at least to make the scratches less visible? damn piss me off.
I got Huawei P20 Pro and after 5 min of use it already has scratches on back glass. Sony XPERIA XZ2 Premium after a month without any case still doesn't have scratches on back glass. Bad quality for this price. Very disapointed. **** quality.
come on guys, it cant be that bad. I saw a ton of 2nd hand p20s and none of them had those scratches.. I had p9, p10, mate 9 .. and never had any issues. I am planing to buy regular p20, but you are getting me worried
I don't have any scratches... What are you doing with these phones??!! Scratches cannot comes by itself
I can confirm the same issue. I dont know why they decided to use plastic. I owned m2 m3 and now i own mediapad m5 and they all are with metal body with no signs of scratches in normal use. I'm too quite disappointed. Its weird build quality to be worse than their tablets for such high price. Otherwise i like the phone very much. The back is quite sensitive to scratches. I have one already even I've never use it without case. But it's very cool and beautiful with glass back. Can someone with mate 10 pro can confirm if the build quality is better or the same.
I think the P10 has the same "flaw" but I never had any issues with it.
edit: I bought a new p20, used the huawei case that comes in the box from the day 1..and yes.. I can already (after a week or so) see some scratches around the screen. nothing major though.. you have to go outside and keep tilting the phone from one side to another to be able to notice it.
I think they're factory scratched
Hello! Im from Chile, I have this phone since a couple of weeks now and yes, I can confirm that it has this exact same issue.
I'm a maniac when it comes to phone care, I've been using mine with the silicone case included since day 1, in fact I still haven't removed the back protective film, I think those scratches appear because of the friction caused when you put on the case and take it off a couple of times. The other day, I had to swap SIM cards a couple of times and noticed those ugly scratches, thought it was dirty but nope, it's a bummer for a premium flagship device, bad idea to use black, glossy and cheap plastic on the bezel.
Well... I guess we will have to live with it, because changing the whole LCD panel is not cheap nor easy, it's not worth the hassle.
