So I was wondering, would I be protecting my One X better with a hard case, or a soft case?
I am looking to order my accessories ahead of the phones delivery, but have never had a case on a phone before so have no prior experience. The clear HTC hard shell looks nice, but would I be better with a soft one?
Also, is there a general consensus on the best company to buy cases from?
I can understand why people want want to protect their shiney new X with a hard case but it just adds bulk to an already large device and wouldnt want to spoil its good looks would you?
I've gone for the official slip case and insurance, if I drop it I lose it

Hmm actually, a slip case might do.. my concern isn't really about when it is in my hands so much, just from dropping my bag, or putting my feet up on a train where it could slip out a pocket. I have only ever dropped my Milestone while walking along with it without actually using it at the time.
Are you going with a screen protector?
Nah not going to bother with one of those either.
If you're ordering from the UK then this is the cheapest I found for the official slip case. Most I found are around £15 but this is £9.95 with free postage. Arrived 2 days after ordering as well.

This case also has micro-fibers to help clean the screen, haven't managed to test it yet though..... Amazon.co.uk reports my X should be with me tomorrow

A slip case will help protect it in a bag or pocket from scratches caused by other stuff, like keys or whatever else you may have in there. Falling out of pockets will most likely occur without the slip case - it will slip out of that as well, and then not be protected. Slipping out of hands it will also not be protected (although I did read you said you weren't worried about that, this is what happens if it does.)
I have a blackberry from work in a pouch, don't care if it scratches but the pouch keeps it away from too much harm. I wouldn't want my brand new One X to dent or scratch just yet, it's too shiny and new for that, and that screen is sooo wonderful. I most definately will be using a case and a screen protector - you can always remove those when not needed. I never used a screen protector on my HD2, and it only ever got one tiny scratch on the glass in two years of intensive use (even dropped it a couple of times). It got that scratch however within a few weeks of my getting that phone, and bugged me since, even though it was hardly visible.
Cant stand any hard/soft cases. Slip cases all the way for me and you protect the whole phone as well

Why would you need a screen protector on a device that has Gorilla 2 glass? Seems kinda pointless if you look at the endurance tests they put it through online. Unless you plan on taking a screw driver or chisel to the screen , I think you will be just fine.
Related
Just wondering because I stopped using them with the Captivate. I did get a RealLook when this phone was new but have since dumped it. I have carried the phone in my pocket with coins and even keys at times and nary a scratch. The glass is far better to slide on in its native state.
I never used cases because they made the phone thick and skins only protect against scratches which for a device I may have all of 18 months doesn't matter much. Its a handset not a work of art. LOL One of the features I like best is how thin the handset is and how slick the glass is in it's native state.....
The back case is nearly indestructible and easily replaceable.
So who else doesn't go for the $20 "screen protectors" and $20 cases? The only case I would think would protect a phone in a drop would be a very soft shock absorbing one that doesn't transfer the shck to the device anyway which collects crap and makes it difficult to get out of ones pocket.
As far as resale goes I found I may get $25-$50 less for a phone with wear marks. Less Money that would have been spent on "protective devices anyway...I sold a NEW in the box Captivate for $229 and a used one for $190 with wear...(and am currently looking for a beat up working Captivate for a spare.)
There are a lot of people who doesn't use a 20 US$ case or protective screen. But IMO, that's a bad idea. That screen could get scratched and it also could get damaged if you drop it. All depends on how you care the device. I think it's better to have a protective screen than having a scratch on it.
I care about myself and not on the 'bare' list. Have a protective screen and a CM Tough.
Regards.

Same here. Why would I risk a 600$ device for a few bucks?

I've never used cases on phones but have ordered a Neo Hybrid today, should be with me by the end of the week...
Dropped the current bane of my existence a number of times, perils of being a biker...
Phone is Wednesday so I'll have a couple days with it bare, I'm optimistic that I'll be converted to a case user... The Neo looks great and before I got lumbered with the BB I was using a Desire so I'm used to that thickness anyway...
OK the question was for those WHO DO NOT use a case...I am well aware of the minions who are anal about scratches and dings or the worrisome drop now and then..
I just wanted to see how many do not use either and just use their handsets as they were designed. I understand completely why those who do buy cases and "screen protectors" do so. I also understand the fear factor used in selling "various highly technological" pieces of clear plastic for $10 for the Gorilla glass.
I actually tried to scratch my glass with a key and could not while a friend watched in horror. LOL "Scratch resistant" is an understatement for Corning's glass. A small scratch would not bother me if it did happen though. But I do know it would take a lot to do so.
I don't really like cases and screen protector. I did not use a case or screen protector for my sgs1 and its always kept in my pocket. After 5 months it got a small scratch on screen and around the casing. I sold it for £180 when I got GS2. I was not planning to get a case for it but after a week scratches on the back appear just from putting on top of the desk and moving it around. I had to buy a case for it which im not really satisfied. I recently bought another case barely there chrome but sent it back coz it looks cheap.
I would prefer no case if only sammy put a different finish on the back. I don't think gs2 will need screen protector as it is glass. it won't get scratch(i hope). If it drops and break. I'll just claim it on the insurance to get it sorted.
I like to feel the phone and how light and thin it is.
But when I'm not using it I have a Mofi case + a DIY Aluminium case to protect it.
+ I'm always very careful with my equipment.
I have dropped my phones (yes, in all of my phones in the past 4 years) a grand total of 2 or 3 times. I take very good care of my phones, but I always at least have a thin case. But one thing that I'll never do is go without a screen protector. If the back or sides scratch, oh well. Value dropped. But if the screen gets scratch, that would bother me until I get a new phone. It ruins the image. So when I'm about to get a new phone, I order off e-cell those cheapo screen protectors that work VERY well, which I never change because they do a very good job! They usually take about 4-5 days to arrive (from the UK to here in Spain). I like those screen protectors, too. Hehe.
I don't use a screen protector or a case. Had the phone about 3 months now, have developed some very light scratches on the screen which you can only see with the display off. I think they're in the oleophobic layer on the outside of the glass and not the screen itself.
Why? Because I can't stand the way a plastic screen protector feels, my finger drags across them and the image is always blurry.
Dont buy a silicone case it just grips to the inside of your pocket and is a pain to get out!!!
Don't buy this either (which is what I have but it came with a screen cover and was much cheaper)
Here
It is like a nightmare taking that cover off, especially since after charging my phone it won't boot and I have to take the battery out. It is even such a terrible nightmare taking it off I always have to take it off using a knife (otherwise it simply won't budge) so don't buy that either.
i use a leather case its similar to this one but it doesnt have the card holders and its not for a wildfire s
I'm using a silicon case for a while now and it's pretty useful.
Brand: Muvit
Very easy to remove, no problem to grab my wildfire from my pocket and doesn't oversize the phone.
The only drawback I have is the combinaison with a screen protector but very pointless.
I prefer the leather case
Got a nice hydrogel case with a free screen protector fron ebay!It is great compared to silicone cases and only 3 euros!!!

i bought one a about £3 off ebay, it annoys the hell outta me. its now collecting dust in my bedroom for this reason.
Its the screen i really wanted protected. My Wildfire is 18 months old now and not a scratch on the screen. I keep it in the same pocket as my loose change too - so would've been another waste of money if i'd gotten a screen protector or leather case after that.
I use the Soft Gel case with a screen protector, it works well. I had one of the hard Silicone cases but you struggle to push the buttons with those. Never had a problem getting either out of my pocket or removing the phone from the cover.
i have gone caseless for a while now using just a screen protector.. but i got sick of them managing to lift up and get dust underneath so i have gone naked and there still isnt a scratch on the screen!!
I've also had problems with my phone in the pocket when having a silicone case so i bought a rubberized plastic one .

3 different cases... dont use any of them.
after a year, my wildfire has certainly excelled ! no scratches, pretty decent condition
I started to use a silicone case, but find that it will turn yellow and later bought the hard case
I personally use a silicone protection for over a year and it does not block in the pocket, there are probably different types of silicone
Moreover he has already fallen a few times with this protection and it is still like new
I use a silicone and i haven´t got any problems
Bought on Amazon store
I have both silicone and a leather case and I mostly use the leather one because its sleek and elegant and the silicone one I use when I am running and doing outdoor activities such as camping.......
So I have pretty good experience with both of them and I will recommend them both.
Cheers

Do you guys bother putting a plastic/gel case on your htc desire z?
I have one but it makes the phone much bulkier and was wondering whether it is an actual necessity...
I've got mine in an Otterbox and it save it allready twice when i drop it from about 2 meters (truckdriver)
I did, for the first 6mths. I went through about 6 different ones, and each had some sort of drawback - interfered with my operation of the screen, or the keyboard, really bulky, didn't allow the two parts of the phone to close flush together, etc.
Eventually I decided to stop babying my phone, and it actually feels nice in my hand now. The first couple of scratches and dings that I picked up did make me feel a bit :-/ but now I just don't care. I know that I'll be keeping this phone as a backup when I eventually move on to something else, so I'm not concerned with resale value. It's such a liberating feeling to be able to just chuck it in my pocket with other things, or toss it down on the desk. Sure, the battery cover is scratched to sh*t now, and some of the paint has chipped off the corners, but I always keep a screen protector on it and that's the only part I do care about.
EDIT: I've dropped my phone PLENTY of times with no case. Onto hardwood and tiled floors mainly, but once onto concrete. Usually the battery door and battery come off, but it's never stopped working. Maybe I've been lucky, I dunno. But I'm not too concerned when I do drop it now, not like I used to be.
Never have used the type of case(skin) that is on all the time. Had my Z for over a year, and its held up very well. The clear coat on the battery cover started scratching off a while back. But I just scratched it all off with my fingernail, and it looks pretty good now. It has some light scratches on the exposed aluminum. But to me it just looks used, not abused. The soft touch plastic doesn't show any scratches or dings. And the aluminum bezel doesn't show any visible scratches, just a couple pinhead sized dings. I've dropped the phone plenty of times, usually on hardwood or carpet, but a couple times on pavement or dirt.
I do use a leather type case/pouch just to protect it when I throw it in my backpack while hiking (where its going to sit unused for most the day). It would get pretty beat up otherwise.
This is my 3rd smartphone, and I've never used an always-on type case. I prefer the device looking and functioning just how it was designed, not covered with extra stuff. I don't see a whole lot of point in covering the phone for the purpose of keeping it spotless, if you are never going to expose it anyway. But if you have a job or a lifestyle where the thing is going to get banged around and destroyed, then I can see using a case.
I use mine with a HTC clip-on case. I like how it feels - sturdy. And because of that, I don't need to worry if I accidentally drop it - it's safe.
I like to keep my phones as pristine as possible. My battery cover got ugly, and I bought a new one just to make it look newer
I've once found a 5$ chinese no name case for Desire Z and was using it for a couple months, once my desire fell out of my pocket and cover's back part was damaged and since that time I was not using it, never did I wanted to buy another one because from a daily use only one thing got lots of scratches on it and it's the battery cover
I only got mine cos the back battery cover started to peel a bit of paint, just wanted to cover it a bit xD
Dropped my D-z without a case, and part of the metal surrounding the screen was deformed.. had to file off the sharp bits.
No but thats only because i cant find any good ones in sweden

yeah im using otterbox too, i really like it! saves you from scratches or similar to your phone!
(but therefore the otterbox gets all the damage - hence i think ill replace the otterbox when its too much scratched )
I was reading about the Otterbox and the only negative thing i've read about it, is
a) the protection foil
b) you can't get the case easily off when you need to get inside your HTC DZ
Is b) really so difficult?

a) Like all protection skins a nightmare to put on, the Desire Z does come with Gorilla Glass and I have yet to scratch the screen.
b) Can be difficult to get the back off but not impossible, just be very careful.
I used the plastic one, but stopped after a month 'cause the DZ is a big phone and with the shield covering it its even bigger so no go for that one. It became very uncomfortable to be in the front pocket.
And i could never swipe down the notifications settings with that thing on its always such a drag to do that with the case. The only thing i use now is the screen protector, but dont know how usefull it is because of the gorilla glass.
I've never used a case for my desire z and I doubt that I ever will, I've already dropped it a few times but this phone has such great build quality, the only wear and tear that my phone has suffered is that the brushed aluminium on the back is wearing off in a strange way but that doesn't really bother me at all.
So I have a cracked back cover, and I now found a crack on the plastic bezel today. Not drop damage. It must be stress fracturing or something. I also have minor scratches on screen. The stuff I wouldn't see until a year of use with prior gorilla glass phones.
My buddy dropped from pocket onto his wood deck and the glass cracked.
I see multiple people reporting cracked screens from minor falls.
Starting to question the reliability of what appeared to be a great device. Phones shouldn't need babied.
Other thoughts or experiences?
Dropped mine the other day, minor dent to bezel next to screen and its barely noticeable. Kicker to the while thing is that I was on my way into T-Mobile to return the case that was on it and I dropped it coming out of my car. It bothers me but at least the screen didn't take any damage. I have the full coverage on it in case of any future damage. But the phone definitely needs to be babied.
No case? No screen protector? I've dropped mine 3-4 times...no damage to either casing or screen. For a $500 device...keep it reliable by buying **** for it.

I haven't needed a screen protector since gorilla glass. That's been like 4 phones ago. I never experienced scratching like I have now.
Seems like you may be a little to rough...Buy a case. Hell even a flip cover would provide "Some" protection. No one ever plans to drop their phone, it happens. Even the smallest dent would bother me lol.
solution = get a case + screen protector. Honestly this is a device you use all day and carry with you. You are bound to drop it, let it slip out of your hand or watch it fall out of your pocket, bag, etc. dropping phones happens! it not just some myth..

Smartass solution: Take better care of your stuff. I've had a cell phone for 8 years and not once have I dropped any of them on a hard surface.
Real solution: Get a protective case, not a cheap little plastic something. Otterbox Defender or Trident Kraken.

buy it at best buy and buy the black tie for 9.99
when i ordered mine from verizon i went on youtube to learn about it and saw a guy drop an iphone and the S3 from his pocket level. Both screens cracked.
verizon offered for 6.99 two repairs per year each at a cost of 100. And, no more than 2 per year!
Best buy i found out for 9.99 will repair or replace for nothing and as many times as you like!!!
I canceled verizon and waited till best buy had it and bought it there with the black tie plan.

Along the same lines, I've got the gray Speck Candyshell on mine and love it. I haven't dropped it (yet...but I will) and I'm confident it will protect it. FWIW, I've also got the ZAGG HD screen protector, so mine is well-protected.
I can't imagine people using a phone like this without some sort of case. Everyone knows how the shiny back of the Candyshell scratches, but I couldn't care less about that. I look at it like this...the scratches I see on the case would be on the back cover of the phone if it wasn't on there. Better for the case to take the damage than the phone.

A small speck of sand in your pocket is sufficient to cause a scratch, depending on how it rubs the screen.
The candy shell designs are very good tbh. I had the Speck single-piece, in black, on my Galaxy Note and it felt great. It had the lifted lip edge for the screen and a mixture between hard plastic and TPU/silicon. It cost me $45 for that case not $5 for a silicone case like those guys that cracked their phones.

That depends on how much protection you want and if you mind covering up the back of the phone (it's nicer than most phones so some people rather not).

I never have much issue with screen scratches (usually) but I'd still err on the side of caution and do at the very least a screen protector. I'm going to replace my ZAGG (which I'm hoping is just scratched and not a crack on the screen ) with one of those fancy shmancy glass screen protectors with the rounded edges.

TPU skin is good enough if you have good reflexes.
While it is falling, you'll probably break its fall by hitting it up. Plus you can find absolutely clear TPU skins.
A case is a must, screen protector is not.
What I do is whenever I get a brand new phone, I always start with a good protective case and a screen protector. After a few months, I gradually get thinner cases and usually end up with those 0.3-0.5mm thin cases that makes the phone feel nice and less bulky. If you plan to rock the phone naked, I'd recommend a phone pouch.
Sent from the "ONE" phone for me
Thank you very much for the quick response I'm still searching for a good frame or case, is it true that the origin HTC bi color case leaves scratches on the phone I won't believe it .....?! I also hope that the black version is scratch resistant some people said not......I just talked with a Vodafone assistant to change the black against the silver but he said to me that himself have the black one and I looks quite better and after two month usage without any case he have no scratches. I'll take the black one, it comes next week and I will give you a first impression.
Can't await

Its not REALLY a must IMO. The phone actually holds up very well. Yesterday i purposefully put the phone in the same pocket with a bunch of coins and it scratched the aluminum but the scratches wiped right off. If you drop things than that would be a different story at aluminum can easily dent :good:
That was my point also ... it looks a little exaggerated to say that a case is a must.
I intend to use the phone "naked" indoors. Any case will practically ruin the nice feeling of the phone itself. Of course, if you drop it then there are chances to ruin the nice finish.
I'm also using the phone outdoors, fr sports. For that purpose I ordered a trident kraken ams ... I hope it will do the job.
P.S.: I saw that a OEM housing is "only" 50 bucks, free shipping ... I guess I'll buy one just in case .
I would say that if you carry your phone in your pocket a case is a must. I generally like to go case-less (especially with a phone this pretty), but after having my One slip out of my pocket on a couple of occasions, I ended up getting a case (Poetic Atmosphere; the rubberized edges keep it from slipping out). If you intend on getting a pouch of some sort, I think case-free is fine.
Also, I don't have a screen protector and have no scratches, though I tend to be pretty gentle with my phones.

On Etradesupply, the OEM housing is only like 30 bucks.
I say a TPU case is a must because:
1) You WILL drop it at some point, it's anodized AL, not grippy plastic.
2) The case provides a lip, so if you put your phone face down, the screen won't touch the surface & scratch from w/e dirt is there.
3) The case will also keep the camera lens (or the anodized back) from touching any surfaces.
4) I wear a ring, and if I don't put a case on, the ring scratches ONTO the phone. That's not good.
If you're REALLY careful, then none of these matter. but it's hard to be perfect.
Besides, when I'm in bed, I can just quickly remove the case for a little bit. It feels nice.
This phone is just too good looking to cover up, IMO. I've been going naked since day one I don't have a single scratch on it. The aluminum housing is solid and whatever glass HTC used really resists scratching. My One X screen got covered in microscratches pretty quickly, but I haven't seen anything on this phone.
Just treat it with care and you can forget the case. CNET tried to destroy their test phone and couldn't do it.
I have a double dip case bought at once with the phone. Well .. the feeling simply does not compare with the case on. It just loos cheap and plastic'ish ... is worse than galaxy S4 actually. So, with all the risks involved I will go "naked" while in normal use and I will use the kraken ams for outdoors. That's all ...
I only like corner protection. I don't care about the back.
I used to have a screen protector on this but I don't like it, it doesn't make the display look as nice. I have since taken it off and have not gotten any scratches, not even micro ones. I think this display is more tough than previous GG2 screens. I had the ONE X+ and it scratched easily.

I respectfully disagree, as will most in this forum that Android is horrible.
Maybe you can post what apps you are looking for and other users can tell you if there are equivalent apps.
