Hi everyone.
I’m currently on rooted SGH-i747M(Rogers) 4.1.2, and I'm trying to find out how to upgrade to 4.4.2 and keep it rooted.
Since my device is already rooted it won’t let me update to the latest firmware.
What would be the proper procedure to move to 4.4.2 rooted?
and does it worth it to upgrade to 4.2.2? I'm asking because I've seen posts on how to downgrade to 4.1.2 from 4.4.2.
Thanks so much in advance.
Once you upgrade to 4.3 or 4.4.2, you cannot downgrade to anything before 4.3.
Is your phone carrier unlocked? If not, I suggest downgrading to 4.1.1, unlock it, then start upgrading the stock ROM.
The easiest way would be to flash back to stock non-rooted 4.1.1, unlock it, and start updating via OTA or use desktop Odin to flash a stock Rogers ROM from sammobile.com.

Thanks alot for the tips!
I'm on Rogers and I don't remember doing any unlocking.
So do I download the stock 4.1.1 also from sammobile.com and use Odin to downgrade to it?
And after I unlock it on 4.1.1, do OTA update to 4.4.2., and then root it?

Exactly. That's what I did with my Bell s3. Make sure you are not rooted and running stock recovery before running OTA updates.

On 4.1.1 what unlocking method did you use?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176719
This is my experience with the T999 model but it should be the same here. Personally I hate otas, so I avoid them if at all possible.
You shouldnt need to flash the full 4.1.1 firmware to do the unlock. Just the modem. Then flash the 4.4.2 firmware via odin after unlocking. Reroot and youre done.
Nothing wrong with how audit13 suggested btw. Itll work that way too. Just offering an alternative.

Thanks to you all, I'm now on rooted 4.4.2 with CWM.
One thing I missed is to backup the rom using CWM. I've already restored all my previous apps and data using Titanium Backup, and I had to go through a lot of troubleshooting with errors like *Unfortunately ***** has stopped." I think everything's working well now though. Should I still do backup in CWM or is backing up with TB enough?
My second question is that it seems to drain battery more. When I wake up this morning the battery was only at 85% or so. I have it plugged in now but it's charging very slow. Is this a known issue with a fix?
Did you restore data and settings for system apps? If so, this can cause issues if done from one build to another, such as battery drain, force closes and degraded performance.

I did TB-> Batch Actions -> Restore all apps with data. Right below there is 'Restore all system data' which I didn't do, but I'm not sure if that 'all' includes system data as well?
The selections under Restore section in Titanium Backup were the following:
RUN: Restore missing apps with data
RUN: Restore all apps with data <<=== this is what I did
RUN: Restore all system data
RUN: Restore missing apps + all system data
RUN: Restore newer versions of user apps
I recharged to 100% then performed a Battery Calibration using an app, but 20% just got drained in an hour and half of pretty much all standby time(screen off).
I would factory reset, reboot and let it sit for a few minutes. Then using titanium, restore only essential apps and data first. You should be able to use the batch restore and then select from a list what you want to include. Test for a bit to see if anything you restored causes problems. If not restore a few more and test. Do this until you narrow down what is causing your problems.

You're right. I should just do that.
I was following the root method at galaxys3root.com, and the files I was told to use were UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.01, Odin3 v1.85 and CWMS3ATTrecovery.tar in which there was image.img without any version number.
I did some digging and found Odin3 v3.09 which seems to be the latest version. Then I went to http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager to download the CWM from the original source, but they're all img files and odin wants a tar file. How do I put this into a tar file, and do I need to rename any? I just want to do everything right this time. Would DE-SAMSUNGNIZER_KNOX_REMOVAL_SCRIPT_V2.1 be a good idea as well?
edit: oh never mind I went into the CWM and saw the version was 6.0.4.7 which is the latest. So I'll just use the same files again for root.
I just did a factory reset, and the CWM and the root as well as superSU are not lost. Is this normal? I thought factory reset takes away the root... Also I just checked in download mode that the Warranty Bit is now 1. It was 0 when I first rooted, so I'm guess the resetting might have done that. Oh well...
Custom recoveries and kernels are what usually trip the warranty bit, so if you installed cwm, thats what tripped it. I wouldn't worry too much over it. Warranty claims are pretty rare, and a lot of people have reported their warranty was honored even though the bit was tripped.
Root will remain after resetting because it is on the system partition. Factory reset only wipes /data.

After factory reset I only restored some of the apps this time, and for many of them I restored only the data. But this battery drain issue is still there. It not only drains battery but in the morning when I woke up the lock screen didn't want to come on. I pressed the power button, and the three physical buttons' LED lights were lit but the screen remained blank. It took a long time until the lock screen comes on but it didn't respond to touch, acting very very laggy until I reboot. I tried wiping dalvik cache(although I wasn't quite sure what it was) in restore mode but it didn't help.
I learned about battery drain monitor apps and downloaded Wakelock Detector. It was showing that my AVG Antivirus Pro is awake all the time taking a lot of battery, and I'm not quite sure if it's supposed to be that way since it should be running in the background all the time. But this seem to be still too much. Can I just assume at this point that the Antivirus is what's causing the issue?
I've seen others recommend wakelock detector, but I'm not familiar with it myself. But I doubt your AV should be using that much, nor should Android System. But a dead giveaway that there's a problem lurking is it only spent 1 second in deep sleep. And 7.5 hours awake with the screen off.
Looking at the wld screen, it certainly seems like AVG is the problem, or at least a big part of it! I'm not sure it's the only one though with your system use being so high in the first screen shot.
I'd suggest uninstalling AVG and test it at least for one full cycle. Also, look to see if wld is able to log kernel wakelocks. In better battery stats you have to set it to do so in settings if I remember right.

Hello All,
Due to my endless frustrations, this might be a long one so please bear with me!
So I purchased a Verizon Global HTC ONE M7 from the States, I am currently in Nigeria and the only thing that makes me sadder and more frustrated than the state of my phone right now is the incessant terror attacks in the country! Initially, almost everything worked fine when i popped in my new Etisalat sim card into the phone, except for the mobile hotspot (which just conveniently turns out to be the one of the top 3 most important features in a phone for me - probably the feature I use the most) this message kept popping up about how hotspot couldn't be used without a VZW sim, etc (also with the non-verizon sim warning when the phone boots up). I tried all I could, eventually deciding to flash a new ROM to clear out everything Verizon and start fresh.
Enter Viperone 6.2.0 - everything worked initially, but after a few weeks i noticed if I did anything like watch a youtube video or download something over a few MBs 90% of the time the data drops (no visible signs like changes from E to H or 3g or the likes, everything looks the same, just that the data stops), toggle mobile data on/off and data connection is back. It worsened and became more frequent over time. Upgraded to Viperone 6.2.1, no difference, so i figured its probably the viperone rom.
Enter Cyanogenmod - http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...-oneplus-one-stock-rom-cm11s-verizon-t2857425 - and its the same exact issue from the beginning, so im guessing its not to do with the ROM at all (though there are one or two niggling issues with the ROM - cant change BBM display pic, etc)?! I've really tried to comb through the forum and see what makes sense that i could try without bugging y'all - I did a factory reset, wiped everything completely and its the same thing.
I've seen suggestions to similar issues like: flash stock recovery, update radio/firmware/kernel, flash back to custom recovery and some other things which are beginning to sound quite dangerous in my ignorance!! I did believe updating the firmware made sense but after digging deeper, i must honestly say i'm quite confused on what to do. what radio/firmware/kernel works with what software version, etc- most firmware that i've seen are 4.4.3 compatible, while this ROM is 4.4.4., some of them seem to be for stock ROMs only and a lot of other confusions.
So, I'm not gonna be a hero and brick my phone from trying to do what i do not understand, instead here i am, hat in hand, crying out for help after suffering for 3 months! Its really frustrating as, downloads break causing me to lose data, skype or MSLync calls always break and im beginning to look unprofessional to people! This is why I have decided to put up a post of my own specific to my case so i don't medicate for someone else's ailments. So please........ WHAT EXACTLY DO I DO??
PHONE DETAILS (typing it out as i've just realized on this ROM i can't take screenshots with Power+Home button combo anymore and can't be bothered at this point!!!)
ANDROID VERSION: 4.4.4
BASEBAND VERSION: 1.12.41.1112_2
KERNEL VERSION: 3.4.82-gfe09065; [email protected] #1; Wed oct 8 01:36:03 PDT 2014

Have you tried a stock version of sense? Essentially what our phone was meant to run. Viper uses a lot of custom tweaks for the masses, and sometimes carrier specifics get finicky. I would suggest santods stock Rom, bonestock, or ecliptic. I think nusense uses an international base and not strictly vzw, but you could also try that one...and santod can clarify about the details.
Hope you get it going.

Can you flash stock recovery from Santod's firmware thread and do a factory reset? It could be a corrupt nv partition which would only be fixed by doing a factory reset via stock recovery. (If you must, make a nandroid of system and data in your recovery of choice so you can restore your data if you wish).

So.. i found time to get to this and decided to go with your suggestion of Santod's stock rom... and now, i think i've done the unthinkable!! After WIPING EVERYTHING "All partitions except SD!" as the instructions stated... i attempted to reboot into bootloader and got a message saying "no OS installed, are you sure you want to reboot"... that scared me a bit, but i thought surely, it must be part of the process! I proceed to reboot to bootloader to flash the firmware and i cant seem to do anything!!
Fastboot is stuck on " waiting for device" for everything i try.
Also, i rebooted back into recovery and attempted to install the stock rom: i get the error message "unable to open zip file"..
Have i destroyed my phone with my own hands, people? :crying:

FALSE ALARM FOLKS!!! I decided to attempt flashing the CM11 rom i just uninstalled and it worked. Turns out its a known issue with the .zip file for that rom - i am now re-downloading from another mirror. Meanwhile the Fastboot thing was just a driver issue - though i'm surprised because i had all the drivers installed on the system and have used fastboot successfully - anyway i reinstalled the drivers and all was well with fastboot again.
NB: Don't get tired of me just yet please!

If doing factory reset from stock recovery doesn't fix it, it is most likely a burned SIM. It has happened to me. (Average 150+ GB a month in data, so I burn em easily)

Uz has it right, you need to flash a stock recovery and THEN do a factory reset, then reload your custom recovery and rom. I had the exact same issue before. Or you could flash an ruu file which would reset the partitions also.

Hey folks, apologies for the touch and go nature of this thread - i just don't have a lot of free time on my hands and other reasons..
Anyhow, i think I want to try out ur suggestion of flashing an RUU - I noticed that im unable to actually enter recovery after flashing stock recovery from Santod's thread (i flashed the latest three recoveries). I can get to bootloader, but when i select recovery, the phone goes black for a few seconds and then i get the RED TRIANGLE WITH THE EXCLAMATION MARK INSIDE, obviously something's wrong, few seconds later the phone reboots itself into normal mode. I did do a factory reset from bootloader, but issue persists.
So now to the RUU flashing issue - could you suggest one for me to flash?
By the way though, isn't flashing an ruu gonna take me back to stock completely (as in back to S-ON, ETC..)?
Thanks a whole bunch - IM DETERMINED TO GET THIS TO WORK!!!

That is in fact stock recovery man. When you get the triangle press volume up and power at the same time. You will enter stock recovery.
Any of my ruu will run fine. You won't lose s-off or unlocked status. You flash them in boot loader fastboot mode.

HA! and now i feel :silly: !!
Bless your soul! i'll give it a go shortly...
I rooted my m8 on stock android 4.4.4 and since the lollipop update rolled out, I applied my backup from TWRP and flashed stock recovery then relocked bootloader. Installed Lollipop via OTA, unlock bootloader and flashed TWRP then flashed supersu. So I'm on android lollipop 5.0 and rooted. I don't know what went wrong, my phone seem too laggy ( mostly when I'm trying to type on facebook messenger, every times i type a text it stacks for some times) And most importantly, some stocks application such us HTC sense TV and Scribble not working anymore. every time I open, it say " stopped unexpectedly ". I don't really know what I might do to get it fix, please advice me.
I have the same problem, basically. I have an unrooted, completely stock phone that got updated through OTA. Ever since the update the phone is lagging, the battery life is visibly worse, and the only visible change is the color of the quick settings and the appearance of notifications. Lots of people are excited and eager to update to Lollipop, but based on my experience I really regret updating. I wish there was an easy way to revert to 4.4.4, but unfortunately it takes too much time which I don't have at the moment. So I decided to wait till May, when Sense 7 is supposed to arrive to M8.
Many of the initial problems with Lollipop were solved by factory reset, but certainly not all. It remains to be lagging and frustrating. At least it's free. But on the other hand, if I bought it, I would certainly return it and ckaimed a refund. As it is, I just have to suffer through it.

ႈI guess, there only way to switch back to stock totally is to s-off but I am not sure if we can still apply nondroid back up of 4.4 stocks might work on lollipop loaded device. its so annoying ^_^
Facebook and Facebook Messenger simply have issues. The big problem is that when sounds are enabled in those apps they lag terribly running ART. ART is probably the reason why you're having issues with other apps, which would be remedied by a factory reset and reinstalling all the apps. I don't see any reason why you'd need to be s-off to flash back to a nandroid backup of 4.4. The only possible issue I could imagine you having would be compatibility issues with firmware, and I think that would require you to be s-off to revert back to, but I think 4.4.4 should work with 5.0 firmware. Can't say for certain though since I'm on Verizon and I'm not sure what carrier you're on, but I'm running 5.0.1 on 4.4.4 firmware. I've run several Sense 6 5.0.1 ROMs and they have been just as fast and even more battery efficient than 4.4.4.
You could always flash a Kit-Kat ROM while you wait for Google to address those bugs with the next release. You don't have to S-Off to go back to the older firmware if you don't want to.
If you want to stay stockish, I recommend Maximus HD.
My phone is turning worst and worst, now i can't even screenshot due to luck of storage it says. So I don't have to s-off to roll back ? All these issues are due to Android L or could it be becoz of me, I flash old TWRP ( 2.7). One more things, I do I flashed my local font on HTC ? I use all fontchangers and I even flash it via fastboot but it doesn't seem overwrite. I can't install busybox too.

Most of your issues are not Android L related but more on user side. Make a backup of your current ROM on ext_sd, make a backup of your internal storage to ext_sd or PC.
Change your TWRP version to 2.8.5.0
In TWRP select WIPE then FORMAT DATA - yes
Reboot recovery
Restore your backup

for me on lollipop on the m8. lot of features did not seem to work. like the nfc, screen rotation, g sensor, flashlight, and proximity sensor. so i tried to goto a custom rom and it still didnt work. anyone else have this problem?
For lag removing, disable Nu player in developper options.
As per the rest.. my M8 kicks ass using completely stock lollipop 5.0.1
No lags, no FCs, no misbehaving.

No issues here since I jumped to Lollipop. Then again, I'm technically not stock. I'm on Viper Rom.

My S3 overheats and drains battery when I'm on a call and when I surf the net Are there apps that manage the phone so it doesnt heat a lot? Are there modems I can download that better manage the battery?
I'm not sure that the modem has much of a role to play in saving battery power.
I always recommend running the latest modem and bootloader to ensure compatibility with the latest custom ROMs.

Hi audit. Well I'm not usong a custom rom. I'm using a rooted stock rom, whichbis JB.
But is it possible to install the latest bootloader and modem on JB? Would tjey be compatible? If so, where do I download them from?
The latest bootloader and modem for a T-Mobile phone is a jb. For a Canadian version, which is what I have, the latest modem and bootloader is kk. I don't think the two bootloader or modems are interchangeable.
I honestly can't think of a reason as to why the software would cause the heat issue.

I think its got to do with busy box or process by which I rooted the phone. I say this because after I backed up and tried to restore my phone through a nandroid, the restore was a total mess. The restore was incomplete. Ever since then, the phone hasnt been the same. I then tried wiping the cache, dalvik, data, did a reset and reformatted the phone. And that didnt help at all. I'm as dumbfounded as you are about this.
You did a full restore via Odin and did a full wipe via stock recovery before first booting the phone?
Rooting should not cause a heat issue and I don't see how busy box would either.

Well regardless, my trouble began after I did a restore and the restore wasnt an exact restore. So somewhere in the phone there lies a major bug especially when the restore wasnt an exact duplicate of the backup.
BTW, since I'm running JB and got the regular task manager, do you know how I can get the card stack-like task manager thats prevalent in Lollipop?
All I can recommend at this point is flashing back to stock, performing a factory reset via stock recovery, and use the phone unrooted to see what happens.
Sorry, not sure how to get the stacked manager,

when my battery goes alot of my apps reset to a state as if they have all data deleted or just installed. for instance if my spotify or steam is logged in when i reboot or have the phone off too long when i reboot it will ask me for my paswords again, alot of apps seem to do this my pebble watch is the same, I have this issue on stock htc rom and stock google rom too both marshmallow.

This is a common and known issue.
Try different rom just don't let the battery die. Avoid restarting the device also.

From what I've read it seems any Marshmallow ROM on this device can exhibit this behavior. As such, I'm thinking about trying a Lollipop based ROM since it's happened to me a number of times (since upgrading to MM).
only happen on stock MM i think, so to avoid this, when my phone dies, i let it charge for 10 min, and boot to recovery, then form recovery boot to system and theres no issue, try it.
