Is 7.1.2 safe on a "new" 5x? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Had the bootloop issue. No root, but was running official beta 7.1.2. LG replaced the mainboard. No charge, even though I was out of warranty.
Have most of the dying 5x's been running 7.1.2 - as if so, is it safe to install on my repaired phone? I'm on 7.1.1 now.

I was on the Beta Program for Nougat from 7.0. it's now ended and I have the final release 7.1.2 now that beta is done, and my 5x is running just fine.
My device was replaced at the end of last year for a bootloop issue under warranty.

Running fine for my day 1 launch device. I've never missed an OTA and I don't see why you should either.

no, this is a hardware problem and has nothing to do with the software version afaik
I'm running on O currently and the phone has been used for ~13 months without any bootloops.

Thanks. I went ahead and updated. Hope the new mainboard has the hardware issue fixed. We'll see, I guess.

[Q] Is lollipop as problematic as they say on nexus 7 2013?

Hey guys
It's been three weeks and I still haven't received the OTA for Android 5. I went to the nexus 7 forums on Google help Center and I saw a lot of people having problems after the OTA. I'm just asking, have any of you faced the same problems? Did you get the OTA or did you fastboot/sideboard it yourselves?
I flashed the 5.0 factory image on my Nexus 7 this past Wednesday after making a backup of my 4.4.4 system. Only issue so far was YouTube not working, but a simple reboot cured this, & the problem hasn't come back. Lollipop has been great for me so far. (Unlocked bootloader, root & TWRP)

I'm using a pure aosp build of 5.0 because my USB port is broken, so if I revert to stock to get the ota I will most likely be stuck in an unrooted, stock state.
Haven't had any issues whatsoever, so much so that I also updated my girlfriend's N7 to the same setup I am using and she loves it too

Android Nougat (final preview) factory reset => M?

So I just got Nexus 5x and signed up for the Android N Developer Preview Program. It upgraded my 5x to Nougat Preview 5 OTA. I'm wondering if I do a factory reset, would it bring my phone back to the old marshmallow ROM? Thanks!
No, you have to opt out of the beta, and they will push an OTA to your phone to downgrade

Factory reset doesn't change the OS version you are on. So you will still be on N.
I concur with what the previous two posts stated. Factory Resetting currently cannot change your OS on any official channels of Android

If you think logically, for that to happen the phone would have to have a permanent store of the "factory" ROM for the device. As that is well over 1GB that wouldn't make sense.

Go away... And take your logic with you!
Lol. The problem is some people (even ones that think logically) simply don't understand how any of this stuff works. Hence the reason there are toolkits... for a Nexus!

No man, go to where you sign up for beta, in there you will have the option to opt out the beta and then a update via OTA will arrive so you can downgrade, but a factory reset will be done, so make a backup

Hi guys.Your Suggestion is very much appreciated. (Updating to Nougat before anythin)

Hi there Guys. GoodDay. I just wanna ask. I recently bought Nexus 5x. And i see nougat is ready for update. But before that Ive found out on internet that some users that updated from MM to Nougat got stuck on bootloop and seems they cant figured it out i dont know if its model related(h791/h798). Google Employee says hardware. Here 's a qoute of a report. from androidauthority website.
"We’ve been hearing an increasing number of reports from Nexus 5X owners about bootloop issues after upgrading to Android 7.0 Nougat.
Many folks have been claiming that, after installing the Android 7.0 Nougat OTA, their Nexus 5X devices would unexpectedly crash and begin to randomly reboot after a few hours, or even days, of use. Some users say downgrading to Android 6.0 Marshmallow does the trick, while others say reflashing the Android 7.0 Nougat September update fixes the problem. Most people, unfortunately, have yet to find a good fix for the problem.
So if you run into this issue, what should you do?
Orrin, a Google employee, had this to say in the Nexus Help Forums:
We understand that a very small number of users are experiencing a bootloop issue on the Nexus 5X. We are continuing to investigate the situation, but can confirm that this is strictly a hardware related issue. For those of you that are currently experiencing this, please contact your place of purchase for warranty or repair options.
We’re sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your continued patience."
Im afraid that if i update via OTA just like them. chances it might or might not happen to me. and if did, can a tool like Wugfresh' NRT save it? or should i root and manually update to nougat via some toolkit or manually, is it safer? Thank You very much for your suggestions.

Wouldn't you rather it boot loop now then later when it's no longer covered under warranty?
Boot loop is a hardware issue that becomes exposed during the install process. You gain nothing by waiting and the same thing could be triggered every time the device is rebooted.

Did you update? I'm in the exact same situation, afraid to update because I just got my phone from amazon and it's running Marshmallow...same model as yours. H791 I don't know if I even have a warranty for it
I suggest you update because it is possible that you might not have that hardware issue, I bought mine a month back and hadn't read any forums or anywhere online about the bootloop. I updated right when I got the phone to android 7.0 xD and my phone has been fine since.

Yeah, ive managed to successfully update it to nougat including the latest build 7.0.1. i think there is just some certain phone that are affected. just see to it that your bootloader is unlock before you update. just in case, you can still go to your recovery.

Thanks for the reply, it gave me the courage to just do it! So far so good, no issues

Just got a new Nexus 5x

Just ordered a new Nexus 5x a few days ago should be here soon. It'll probably still have Marshmallow on it. Should I only flash custom ROMs. Immediately to avoid bootloop issues u have been hearing about? I'm confused because it seems that the OTA or preview edition was causing this not custom ROMs.
To me, it depends what you want to do with your device.
For me, I downloaded the latest 6.X and flashed manually. Relocked the BL and enrolled in Android beta program. Then let the OTA 7.1.1 come down to upgrade the device so I continue to get updates, including upgrade to production release down the road.

More signs point to hardware failure rather than the update. I think it was just coincidence that 7.0 came out when phones were getting close to 1 year old. I've been running my replacement from last month on 7.1 beta and it's just fine.

So you have just been flashing new images manually? For me I don't care about the newest version I sill am using Marshmallow on my Nexus 6. I prefer customization so I'm going to unlock, TWRP, custom ROM etc........ I just want to potentially avoid any of the bootloop issues I have been hearing about.
It sounds like there was never a definitive conclusion as to why it was happening only with Nougat

Gotcha. I have only had my 5x for just over a month so not the most knowledgeable. My take is largely the same as the other guy, failures are from hardware or just bloat from long term use.
I start with the latest 6 and considered staying on it for root, xPosed, etc. I have always ran this way for years. But it is super annoying not having Android pay and a few other things. I sucked it up and decided to try not rooting or even unlocking BL. There are things I miss but I am staying locked down for now. The primary issue I have is for tethering, which I cannot do. The rest I have surprisingly been able to do without.
Flash away
Hey mate, you will not have issues flashing what ever you like, issues are caused by hardware failures ( unavoidable ) or just not following instructions correctly. I flash factory images, beta etc, and custom ROMs. Never have issues. Flash like crazy. It's just a phone and almost all of them can be fixed, if something goes wrong.
P.s. You gotta try the 7.1.1 beta. Its has potential.

OnePLus 3 OOS4 doesn't pass safetynet test

I am on new Nougat stock os. Phone has been re-locked.
Can't use the phone for paying and two safety net tests I ran fail both at the last test: cts profile match.
Any idea what should I do to make Android pay work? Thanks
I'm waiting to upgrade to 4.0 until they fix Android pay. I read a couple people say android pay wasnt working but when I asked no one would confirm Android pay was broken...
lock Bootloader needed for safetynet pass on nougat. Put recovery to stock reinstall OOs from stock recovery and relock bootloader.this worked
From what the very little information I can gather, this issue appears to only affect previous users having unlocked bootloaders.
Could it be that there's still some tampering or unlock flag that's not cleared after the re-lock and Google is able to see?

safetynet test apps
For those willing to test safetynet (on an unrooted, locked bootloader ofc) here are some links to test apps I tried:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.scottyab.safetynet.sample&hl=en (rating: 4.6)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cigital.safetynetplayground&hl=en (rating: 4.3)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vpals.apps.safetynettestapp&hl=en (rating: 5, out of 8 reviews though)
Magisk works, can't test android pay though cause my card doesn't support it
Yeah, this might be what I'm going to do anyway, it's just a little bit ironic to have to root in order for safetynet to be happy.

I had an unlocked bootloader and Android Pay wasn't working. However, when I locked the bootloader after installing the stock recovery, it is working. I have successfully used it since then.

I am on OOS 4.0
So android pay is working with Oos 4.0??? Or not??
I am going to try -- again -- the unlocking/reflashing say marshmallow stock and relocking + updating to oos4 and Will post back. However it'll have to wait until weekend.

It's working. However, some are reporting that it's not. It's working for me. Stock with locked BL.
It's finally working here as well. As suggested, I had to unlock again, reinstall stock recovery shipped with 3.2.8 sideload 3.2.8, lock bootloader, several factory resets. I am back on Nougat and safetynet is good now.
