How much "miscellaneous" battery drain is normal after google fixed the lollipop bug?
I've read about the initial bug in lollipop causing high battery drain under the entry "miscellaneous". I'm using a 5.0.2 rom (as far as I've understood from the information about it) so the bug should be fixed. Yet I'm seeing quite some battery drain going to this "miscelanous" entry. Right now it's 9%, screen is first at 10% but I still feel 9% sounds like quite a lot or is this correct? What's "normal" here?

Im seeing the same - Misc is at 14% now and Screen at 10%. not sure if its WiFi related, as was the case with the early 5.0 release for the nexus 5, or if its related to NFC / something else?

What bothers me is that we do not know if this is "rediscovered" battery use that previously just wasn't reported, or if it's a new drain coming with lollipop. I like lollipop but there are quite a few things about the code that has me concerned.

I dont think its the same bug. The Miscellaneous Drain encompases many things that run in the background that don't have their own status group in the battery stats. Usually, they are small drains compared to the screen, apps etc... it will be hard to determine whats causing it, unless you are a developer i think. Still the battery life isnt bad, so not really bothering me too much.

I had some battery issues coming to lollipop as compared to kitkat so I guess that made me more doubtful. On my device misc always use up about as much as the screen which sounds like a whole lot that the cell has no idea where it went.
did you have it after flashing? or is it always there?
it only appears for me after using TWRP.

I'm not sure as I started flashing pretty much the first thing I did with the LG G3 that is affected by it. Do you think TWRP itself is to blame or rather an incompatibility with custom roms? I've not flashed stock to compare, but I could check my wifes phone, she is stock wout any root or hacking.
has anyone else seen a dramatic decrease in battery life after the update? My battery went from lasting all day, to now Im lucky to get 5 hrs before its down to 30%..... overall ive seen a drastic decrease in overall performance... has anyone else expierenced worse performance?

keep calm and factory reset. That should fix the stability and battery life.

No better no worse, my battery life has always been great. Example today, unplugged at 7 am , no recharges during the day and it's at 55%.
I used the phone , surfed and checked my texts and email all day

You are not alone. I used to be able to go a couple of days on a single charge. Now I'm struggling to make it 12 hours on a single charge.
I was getting almost 2 days when I first started using the note4. After a few months passed I noticed battery life dropping pretty fast throughout the day. Factory resets helped a little, but not much. Lollipop upgrade plus factory reset has seemed to help. I get through a full day now with light browsing/gps(maps)/gaming and fair amount of spotify streaming. Nothing close to what I was getting fresh out of the box.
I am experiencing similar battery issues. Used to charge my phone once every two days. Now, I carry my charger attached to my hip like a feeble iPhone hipster.
I'm also having issues!
I also have seen a large decrease in my battery life since updating to Lollipop. I tried factory resetting twice and nothing seems to help. I was getting 8-9 hours of screen on time on Android 4.4.4 but now I'm somewhere between 4.5-5.5.
Also my note 4 will occasionally get really hot after just normal web browsing. I'm very disappointed in the update. However, performance seems to be a little better....but it wasn't ever really an issue.
I just read an article on gsmarena about the international version of the Samsung galaxy note 4 receiving a firmware update.....hopefully that fixes the problems we're having. We just have to wait for Verizon to send out the update. (Which will probably take a couple of weeks to months).
One thing to keep in mind is that we (those who are having these issues) need to make sure that we contact Verizon in order to make sure that they acknowledge the problem and send out a fix ASAP.
I'm having the same issues since the update...battery sucks. What's the easiest way to inform verizon?
Passpoint Wi-Fi
Noticed that there is a "new" Passpoint Wi-Fi feature that will automatically connect to certified access points.
This is ON by default after the Lollipop update. (Settings >> Wi-Fi >> Advanced)
I just turned it off to see if battery life improves. Never been a fan of automatic Wi-Fi connection features.
Checking on the Lock Screen Weather/Location Update next.
My Note 4 has the battery drain issue now after updating last night to Lollipop but am giving a couple days to see if any improvement. I did do a battery pull after all the updates (system and apps) and it did seem to help.
My Note originally for a couple of days had the battery drain issue. However, after uninstalling the Google Fit app then a reboot the battery life has been great.
Maybe try a battery pull for 20 seconds as well.

I think the easiest way to contact Verizon is just by talking with the technical support. Good representatives are hit or miss but Verizon's are generally good.
If you contact them just explain the issue that you are having and they should be putting it on record saying that multiple people are calling in concerning a battery problem. They may have even figured out the culprit (s) and/or found a fIx.
I'm going to be calling today.
Hi guys, I'm coming from a S7 which lost 1-2% during an 7-8 hour sleep, with everything off, now with a brand new S9+ I'm losing more than 5% during the night. I know this isn't excessive but I don't find it normal either when my other phone lost less than half of that. During the first days I used the S9+ without the SIM card and overnight drain was perfect, 2% every 10 hours, but once I inserted the SIM I started seeing a drop of 5 or 6% every night. Once again, I undrestand it's not terrible, but my other phone lost max 2% in the same situation.
So for what I've noticed, it's the SIM card radio signal the major drain, in GSAM it appears as 87% of the overnight drain. Removing the SIM makes it lose 2% overnight, that would be perfect but I can't enable Flight Mode everynight for I need to receive calls in case of an emergency.
Any suggestions?
Have you tried just disabling data? That would stop MMS texts but you'd still receive calls.
Sorry I didn't specify, when I said everything off it was including mobile data. Everything is disabled, only drain seems to come from the phone signal. I always have 2 or 3 bars so the signal is not terribly bad.

Ahh, ok. If there is nothing running in the background and the only thing is the Sim card, then I don't see much hope for an easy fix. Of course, there is the old factory reset that Samsung would suggest but that may be a big PITA for nothing.

Ignore it, you're worrying over 3% battery drain?
Charge the phone for 2 minutes in the morning to gain your 3% back... :silly:
I think it is fine, Your installed app might have increase from the day you purchased your S9 so might might be increasing apps might be reason behind it? but over all why are your worrying about 3 to 5% as long as s9 is running android to your are going to have some percent drop overnight, I think you shouldn't worry about it

Yes, I know it's not a lot, but why my 2 years old S7 drained 1 or 2% overnight and my brand new S9 drains 6% or more? Some mornings I have woken up at 93% having unplugged it at 100%, and it went down to 92% after 20 seconds of use. Can different phones have a different drain because of the modem/phone signal?

I factory reseted it a couple of times and still got a 6% drain in 7 hours, not 3 to 5%. My main concern is that I inserted the SIM in my old S7 for the night and got 2% drain, and next night tried my new S9 and got 7%. That's what I don¡t understand. The drain in the S9 is the same with everything factory set and with my S7 setup transferred. S9 drains 5 or 6% and S7 drains 2% maximum.

You're comparing apples and oranges. The S9 has a lot more under the hood and that's probably contributing to the extra usage. I think you may be chasing a ghost.

Thanks for all the replies.
I see, so even though the phone is asleep and with everything off/disabled, the faster processor might consume more battery? I understand your point, yet I only see the drain when the SIM card is in the phone, when I take it out the drain is equal to my S7, 2% in 8hs max, that's what I find strange.

If this is just 'because you are interested in what's causing the extra drain', and not because it's actually bothering you, then by all means try to narrow it down, but S7 vs S9 = completely different phones separated by 2 years, new tech, you can't expect them to perform identically, including power consumption
That said, my S9 probably drains about 2% a night, but I've used a package disabler to kill a load of useless system apps, possible one of them is causing the drain
AOD will drain too
You up to date with firmware?
Tried flashing a different CSC region stock ROM? Possible the modem (CP) is causing the drain if it only happens with the SIM inserted (I'm running O2U)

News, I have reseted to factory settings but didn't connect to wifi so the phone doesn´t download any carrier bloatware or update/install other apps. Drain from 8PM to 7AM was 2%. I will try tonight again without modifying anything except for what the phone installs automatically. If the drain appears again I will start disabling bloatware until I find the culprit.
Thanks a lot for the help. It doesn't bother me a lot, but a drain of 6 or even 7% sometimes during the night is a bit annoying. That's half an hour SOT I lose.

Surely you're back in the house before your phone reaches 7% though? Would be a very rare occasion when that last few % actually made the difference between having power or not
But like I said before, you don't get up and leave the house in 30 seconds, plug it in while you get ready if you really need that extra 30 mins
But yea, carrier bloatware could easily be the culprit, hence the package disabler pro (no root needed)
Or flash an unbranded stock firmware (BTU and XEU are carrier bloat free in the UK)

Why should the region of the firmware influence the drain? All firmwares should be the same. In theory.

Certain CSCs enable certain features, VoLTE / WiFi calling, call recording, etc etc, and for example if BTU and XEU which are both UK unbranded were identical, they would surely get the same OTA at the same time, but they don't, and carriers add their own bloat if you have a CSC that is carrier branded
Also changing CSCs often requires Odin's repartition option to be enabled as the firmware requires different partition size vs the original CSC that was on the device when bought
Different modems I would imagine for different regions too, if the drain is coming from a SIM related issue, the modem part of the firmware would be a suspect

I read that there are issues with the modems on the S9 some time ago. Maybe that's the issue in my case as well? I got Wi-Fi calling, but the phone is unlocked and I got no bloat (except the Google apps).

Quite possibly, I'm not seeing any extra drain than I should be and I'm running the O2U firmware (United Kingdom)
I have WiFi calling and 4G calling too, might be worth flashing this firmware to test if yours is the G960F? There isn't really much bloat, a couple of O2 apps only and you get the option during first boot to install or not install them anyway
Do you know how can I disable the bloatware now that BK Plugin 2 and BK Package Disabler are down?

Package Disabler Pro & PDP engine addon, both on the play store
Well, I found the Package Disabler Pro + after my last reply and installed it. Didn't install the PDP Engine Addon as I hadn't read your reply at the time and the app said the Disabler Pro + worked alone without the need of another plugin.
Automatically disabled around 120 bloatware apps, restored the ones I needed or wanted to use, and disabled a couple more that were carrier specific bloatware. Restarted the phone, charged to 100% and went to sleep after unplugging and setting my alarm.
Woke up this morning after 7 hours of sleep with 99% and a smile on my face. Seems that it was bloatware the culprit of the standby drain, and even my day stamina has been improved, today I've given it a light usage and I'm still at 81% at 6PM with 1hr 24m SOT.
Thanks a lot for your help!

Hello, i have a problem with my A2 lite. Battery life is just 2days and 4h SOT. Suspect is system consumption 44%. Have you experienced that someone? I have to try factory reset, or what? Thanks for help.
You should definitely factory reset the phone, you should not be below 6h SoT with this battery... Im regularly getting around 8 hours of SoT depending on what u use...
Same here. 1 day after the november security update and I have almost the same numbers as the OP. Coincidentally, 2 days ago my ticwatch e started draining battery dropping to almost half of what i was used to. I suspect the update messed up something.
No strange battery drain since November update on my side. Maybe an app you use was updated at the same day which is causing the drain.
Facing the same issue after november update. Same usage, same apps. Might have to factory reset
Edit: careless of me lol
So I did factory reset. Issue with battery continues. Android system and google play services using most battery, altogether about 30%. SOT is basically half of what it used to be. Google play services are on the latest Nov12 version.
Edit: Whatever is broken, it also affects the battery life of my wear os device (ticwatch e). After connecting the watch to old cell phone (ascend p7) battery drain of the device stopped
It was the fault of the november security update and now there's another security update which is going to fix the battery draining issue!
Let's wait few days to see. Installed yesterday and the phone battery looked promising... Until paired with my wear os device (Ticwatch e). Then the battery drained started again, on both devices. Google Play Services still have top usage. (I tested the watch with my old phone running on lolipop, all ok there, so it's got definitely something to do with the latest updates)
Had same issue with 1st november patch, now the 2nd seems to have fixed: again slow draining...fine!
I've also experienced bad battery consumption since my 2x November updates, from 9+ hours SOT to 5 hours (approx 2 days to 1 day)
have the same problem, bought the phone, it was offering me upgrade to android 9, i did it, and the battery cannot hold for more than some 29 hours.... i cannot see whats draining it unless i root it, because Gsam cannot see which apps specifically. anyone still have the issue on android 9?

GSam Battery Monitor can be granted some rights by adb (no root needed), so it can show consumption per app.
Have a look at
GSam Battery Monitor -> Menu -> More -> Enable More Stats
I ususally have less than 2 days with 6-7 SOT. If it's less, GSam shows me, which app consumed more than it should.

mine says i have to root it in order to enable it. in the same menu.
been browsing the MIUI forum, some people having the same issue, the guys who dont have that issue, are claiming its adaptive batterys fault and that it will normalise in a week or so, when adaptive battery does its thing.
sound odd, but ok.
also, it says that rollback to oreo is not recommendable because some functions could get buggy.
I had a problem after upgrading, downgrading and upgrading again. Was apparently caused by a modem firmware issue. Reflashing the modem from 10.0.3.0 fastboot image fixed it for me.
Showed up as "system" but nothing that could be pinpointed with GSam (root) other than high load in the kernel.

not true. i have done the downgrade without issues. Oreo, in my opinion, is very optimized for our mi a2 lite....im waiting a better Pie version. if you want to read how to do the downgrade here the link https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/help/sim-card-issue-downgrading-pie-9-0-t3874350/page6
okay so what should i do now? after downgrading from 10.0.4.0 pie to 9.6.11.0 oreo and rooting and it got even worse than ever. Please advice me fast!

I don't know how you downgraded your phone but I've downgraded mine from 10.0.4.0 to 9.6.11.0, battery life is better than February update. Phone is snappy and had no issues at all (except for SIM2 which I don't use). I've also rooted it with Magisk.
Anyone else with battery drain problems after the new update?
I just charged my watch after the update and it's down 19% in like 1.5 day. Before I get like around 3 week of battery life.

i hope this is a bug and will be fixed soon!
30%/3day, run 30m/day, always HR,
i think GT don't live after 14day =))
Just a thought
The battery drain time was probably done with basic settings turned on. Same as your house the bill will go up if you turn everything on.
Also The Chinese have a forum called the Pollen Club, they are developing things for the GT much faster than we are and they also have a Beta app out already, keep an eye on my posts as i'll add links shortly one im at 10 posts
