When using a VPN, I can confirm in a browser that the VPN address is being picked up. But. . . when I start Google Maps it goes to my home location. Somehow, location services is finding its way around the VPN. I have to leave location services on. Any idea how to control what location services sees?
Google location used the Mac addresses and names of wireless access points it can see around you or are connected to a vpn won't hide that

Should i download country specific maps for the gps to work? because my gmaps is showing me the location only when i am using wifi if i am away from wifi networks i try the gps it shows the location with a blue arrow but a blank map not sure what to do.
If i have to download maps of each country kindly guide me with the link.
If you are using Google maps you need a working data connection as Gogle maps downloads the "tiles" automatically according to your locations. With google maps you cannot pre-download the country map but you need to have the data connection on (3G or Wifi) so that the app keeps updating the map tiles for your location.
Other navigation applications like Ndrive, Wisepilot, .. require that you download/purchase the country specific map and it is stored on the phone memory, with these type of applications you do not need a data connection to use the GPS navigation.
hope this helps

VPN or Virtual Private Network gives you the ability to connect from a hotspot to your home network. Once connected you can use the services of your own network while being somewhere else. For example if you have set up a DLNA server at home, you can watch your movies while sitting in the park for example. This is of course if both your home internet connection and the hotspot's connection can spare the bandwith required for the service you are using and the service doesn't mind the extra lag.
VPN is more useful if you connect to your business network, because companies usualy limit the services and data that can be accessed from the internet.
That's the theory anyway, because I can't test that feature - my router doesn't support incoming VPN connections.
My oppo N1 running CM11 M8, one of my major problem is the useless of VPN. I used many third apps to connect to VPN, and always failed to connect. Even, if suddenly connected, I couldn't access Google play as the connection become very slow. I need VPN mainly to connect to Google play store, as it restricted in my region.
How to fix
I use hotspot to connect to VPN in CM11, although it connected and the hot spot go green, nothing happened and the Google play become blank.
Then I tried to close the full protection within the hotspot shield app, its icon become blue ( see photo) and lastly I can access Google play. Not sure what happened but I googled my problem earlier and found that the VPN issue is common since android 4.4.2..

I was on android q beta and decided to roll back to stable p version. After reboot I found I had to connect to a Google server to finish the initial setup. The problem is I am working in China at the moment and no way to access Google server. I have been using various vpn to assess blocked contents in China before but that's after passing the initial setup. Any idea? I have googled using my laptop with vpn of course on this and all the hacks need the phone to be able to access google server directly.

Tried that, I am not an expert on that, have tried various ways, can share the wifi but it's just the plain internet without vpn, so still not getting google server. I am still investigating on that.
Has anyone foynd a way to change the cell DNS?
I've tried apps like the 1.1.1.1 but it just sets up a vpn which still uses the cell DNS (which is very slow)
You can use hidden settings for miui app from play store and edit the dns that way. It works for wifi and mobile data for me.
Thanks, I've tried a few of these apps and haven't found any of them to work
