HTC M9 bricked - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Was using my M9 with ViperM9 rom(Android 7.0) with TWRP recovery.I decided yesterday to revert back to stock.Downloaded RUU.exe and tried to run it but ended up with Signarure error 155.Someone told me its because of an unlocked bootloader. So did the foolish process of relocking when on a custom recovery. The phone now doesn't boot to anything else than the bootloader and download mode. And yes the RUU still failed(might have been one for a different variant)
The status is "Relocked" and "S-ON".
Is there anything I can do now??
MID : 0PJA10000
CID : HTC_J15

Also tried to unlock bootloader again using adb.It says finished(the unlock bootloader prompt with Yes or No comes up in phone also) and phone reboots...but to same bootloader with "Relocked" status.
Note : Cant boot into recovery

There is no RUU.exe for your phone and you can't just download a random RUU from HTC's website and flash it. It will fail if MID and CID don't match (as explained in the ReadMe thread). Aside from that, there is a big fat warning that tells everyone not to re-lock the bootloader if you don't have a RUU that is known to be working with your phone.
Head over to the RUU section of the ReadMe thread. It'll tell you how to find our your firmware version and which RUU you need to use according to your current firmware.

Thank you for fast reply Sir.
I am downloading firmware version 3.35.401.12 right now.
Will rename it to 0PJAIMG.zip and put it in my SD card and try to flash in download mode. Will post the results after that.
Edit : I actually downloaded European RUU.exe from Androidruu.com and not from HTC website.Still it was not the right one though.

That *.exe for version 1.32.401.17 can only get used with one specific CID (which isn't yours if I remember correctly) and only if your firmware version is lower than the one of the RUU. Therefore the statement that there would be no RUU.exe for your phone is still valid.
However, I made a mistake by thinking that you tried to use a US RUU and I apologize for that. It's just that this mistake is quite common during the last months. Looks like I've been too overhasty...

Booted into download mode with 0PJAIMG.zip in it.Got the prompt to press volume up to flash.
"Start ui_updating" and the phone rebooted again to download mode and the prompt to press volume up came up again. This repeated a couple of times and the update process started.
The current state is "system.img_04" at 100%.It's been sometime it has stopped at this state. Is it normal?

So it is stuck at system.img_04 at 100%.
What should I do?

Did you check the MD5 checksum of the RUU before you flashed it? The file might have gotten corrupted during the download.
Please, press and hold the power button and both volume keys until the phone either turns off or reboots to the bootloader. Try to boot the system. There are two things that can happen:
It's booting successfully and you should be good to go.
If it doesn't boot sucessfully then reboot to the bootloader with the key combination I mentioned at the beginning of this paragraph. If the MD5 checksum of the RUU didn't match the desired value then please re-download it and verify the values, again. If they match after a new download you should flash the newly downloaded RUU. If the MD5 sums already matched the first time then please try to use a different sd card for flashing. Maybe the card is faulty and causing the issue. As far as I know (from my own experience and reports made by other users) that RUU normally should work just fine.

Md5 was fine.I powered down the phone by pressing all three keys booted to download mode and tried update from SD card again. This time it worked fine.So now I have a stock rom with OTA updates also.Everything was made possible because of you Sir Flippy498.

[Solved] RUU failure, boots to HTC logo but can be fastbooted. What next?

Hello all,
I am sorry for starting yet another failed RUU thread but I am struggling to find any solution on this. I am relatively capable having rooted, s-off, updated radios etc on my Desire HD. This one is above my level though...
I have tried to root the Desire using Unrevoked 3.32 but it kept failing. I decided to try a 'simple' RUU flash - no worries there, I thought. I cannot remember the original software or baseband numbers now. I have feeling that the radio was not identical on the RUU, as I could not find one on 'shipped roms' but I got one as close as possible (for O2 UK - there is a choice of two. One has radio 5.09.05.30 and one is 4.06.00.02. I went for the 5.* as the one I had was also 5.* but I think it may have been slightly different). The RUU got nearly to the end of the system section (90%) when it failed and gave an Error 110 (possibly corrupted data in the RUU).
Now when I reboot, I get a grey HTC in the centre with a /!\ in each corner. I was worried it was bricked, however, I can fastboot into the OS and use the phone normally. It just won't restart properly as it then goes back to the grey HTC /!\ situation. That seems to me that everything is working ok, I just have a software conflict somewhere... would that be a correct assumption? Either way, I am stumped as to what to do next, so advice would be really appreciated!!
(As it's my girlfriends phone, I could be in trouble here!! )
Thanks!!
Ok boot your phone and create a goldcard.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/03/10/how-to-create-a-goldcard/
If you have trouble setting ADB... Goto market and search for app called goldcard helper... it will give you the reverse CID and you can follow from step 7 from above guide.
After creating a goldcard.. flash below RUU
http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783_signed.exe
The exact same thing happened to me when I decided to go back to stock a couple weeks ago. I just re downloaded the RUU from shipped roms and tried again and it was fine. I had to manually download and install the new market though once I'd set up as it wouldn't update itself

Thanks for the quick replies guys!
jhonybravo4u - I'll try out some new RUU files before I give the GoldCard option a go. If I need to go that way, I'll let you know how I get on.
liberator72 - I did try redownloading once. The error does say that the RUU may be corrupted so that is a possibility. I'll try a few more times.

Cheers EddyOS. Hopefully they will be more stable hosts and I'll get a better download. I'll keep you posted!
Ok, downloaded from Rapidshare and got the same message...

I'm going to try yet another download - the 4th attempt - so I may need to look for other solutions soon.
Ok, I have...erm... progress? I just tried the same RUU file straight away and now I get:

The phone has gone to the RUU HBOOT page this time and shows that it failed on the:
[7] SYSTEM - Fail-PU
Click to collapse
Then tells me that 'Partition Update fail!'
The RUU program then gives me an option to go into recovery mode. I can go through this but unfortunately it seems to be a dead end.
Any suggestions?
Edit: Oh dear.... now the 'fastboot oem boot' just sits in the command prompt saying <waiting for device>.
This looks ominous....
Edit (2): The 'fastboot oem boot' has just worked again... Thank goodness!!

And I suggest to create goldcard before doing anything.. as that will get you out of any trouble.
As it seems your phone is branded.. and you wont be able to flash any other RUU
Thanks jhonybravo4u, I am just going via your proposed method. GoldCard is created and I am just flashing - or trying to - the RUU that you suggest.
Edit:
johnybravo4u, Sir, you are a legend! I'm in and recovered. Thank goodness!! If ever I pass Kuwait, I shall buy you a beer...

no easy access or UI after deleting internal storage (newbie)

Hi,
Here's my story: I have a factory unlocked M9 bought in Belgium. After reading in XDA, I unlocked the loader, and install TWRP (2.8.5.0). I then made a backup and installed ARHD 5.2.
Everything worked fine, until I decided to sell my device (I live in Argentina, and although I bought the international version, it does not cover 4G band 4). So in order to sell it I wanted to wipe everything back to factory settings. I went ahead and restore my backup. Again everything worked flawlessly, but then I saw some folders in the internal storage that were not supposed to be there (such as maildroid folder, among others). So I went back to TWRP, wipe, advanced, "delete internal SD". oops, wrong choice...
I rebooted and then notices appeared "Unfortunately UI has stopped..../ unfortunately easyaccess has stoped...", losing all functionalities (no touch buttons, I had to restart every time I wanted to change menus).
I restored again the backup...no luck. I then installed again AR 5.2...no luck.
I wanted to RUU (I am not sure I know what it is, but I do know how to follow step by step guides...well at least sometimes...). my phone is S-ON. I tried installing sunshine to S-OFF, but I got the message "No SD card", so it wouldn't let me install it. in fact when I use the HTC file explorer it looks as if there is nothing in the internal storage.
I don't think I can fastboot (USB not recognized). I read that phones needed to be S-OFF ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/general/htc-one-m9-dump-t3060545 ), so I don't know what else to do.
I really tried all related posts but I can't find the answer....
Any help is really appreciated (of course I couldn't sell the phone). Thanks.
A RUU is a Rom Update Utility. It's a little program made by HTC to reinstall a stock firmware and/or rom on a phone that is S-ON. Depending on the build number and the CID of your phone the needed RUU is an *.exe or a *.zip.
Are you still able to enter Settings>About>Software Information>More? (Not completely sure whether these are the correct english terms. On my phone it's Einstellungen>Info>Software-Informationen>Mehr.) There you can find the build number of the installed firmware if you are on stock rom.
Otherwise you need to boot into download mode where you can find the build number (written in the line with "OS" at the beginning) and the CID of your phone. Since you never mentioned any branding and you bought the phone in Belgium I'm assuming that the CID is something like HTC__*** and that you can use a European RUU.
Next you need to download the corresponding RUU for your build number (just use Ctrl+F for easier searching) and your CID. Since the CID isn't explicitly mentioned in the RUU names you may have to search for the meaning of your phones CID (for example in a list like this one).
If the needed RUU is a *.zip then you have to rename the file to 0PJAIMG.zip (that's a zero not an O), copy it on an external sd card that is not bigger than 32gb and formatted to fat32 and put the sd card into your phone. If you now enter download mode your phone should guide you through the rest of the procedure.
If the needed RUU is an *.exe then you just have to connect you phone to your pc and start the file (on windows).

I had access, the build number is 1.32.401.17 CL506785 release keys. However from download mode I got Mainversion: 1.32.401.15. So I guess I have to use the latter right? I do not need to be S-OFF, because I can't make it....

Ok there are two 1.32.401.15 version for Europe, that only differs in the release: Which should I use
1. 0PJAIMG_HIMA_UHL_L50_SENSE70_HTC_Europe_1.32.401.15_R1_Radio_01.01_U11440261_56.02.50306G_2_F_release_426891_signed.zip

Edit2: I forgot another important thing. (Sorry, I'm in a little hurry right now.) Your CID needs to correspond to the RUU you want to run. Since you never mentioned any branding I'm assuming that it is something like HTC__*** so that you can use a European RUU. You can find out by booting into download mode. (I'm not completely sure whether it's written there if you are S-ON. If not you can either try using an app like CID Getter or the fastboot command "fastboot getvar all".) If your CID differs from HTC__*** I would suggest you to post it here together with the build number so that it's easier for me or someone else to guide you to the correct RUU.

Yes, that's right. Since there has not been an aboot update until now you can also try to install the 1.32.401.8 RUU and then update via the stock OTA function. I've done this with my phone before I got S-OFF so I know that it works. This way you can be sure that the correct version of the 401.15 firmware gets installed.

Ok, I already installed the first release of 1.32.408.15. it worked flawlessly. Should I relock (or lock) the phone to receive OTA?
Use a 32 GB card tip saved my day! ( I had a 128 GB which the phone didn't read)
Thank you all.
I am now trying the second release as the first one did not recognize 5G wifi networks.
Is it possible to receive OTA once you have an unlocked bootloader? XX.15 is the latest version? because ARHD has XX.17?
thanks again
Actually I don't know whether it's necessary to relock the bootloader if you want to install an OTA but I would guess it is. The 401.15 version is the latest European one. 401.17 is only receivable on HTC__J** but llabtoofer stated on his twitter account that the next European update is waiting around the corner.
You mentioned earlier that you cannot connect your phone with your PC and that fastboot isn't working. Did you try to connect your phone to another PC/Laptop (maybe your parents/siblings/friends can help you out if you don't own another one)? As far as I know there is no way to relock bootloader without a PC.

accidentally flashed wrong stock recovery on htc one m8

I have accidentally flashed wrong stock recovery on my htc one m8,so now it's not charging when phone is off,I want to flash the correct stock recovery,my software no is 1.16.401.10 ,after that I need to flash marshmallow, explain me what are the steps
thank you....
Your device is NOT M8 but M8s.
Check this section - https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/one-m8s-general
There even RUU that you can use. I posted the RUU in a few thread, search for it, can't help much as I'm on mobile now.
Check this and use the RUU posted - https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/one-m8s-general/htc-one-m8s-boot-t3528316
@ckpv5 yes i tried ruu,but my software version is 1.16.401.10,i started ruu 6.0,but after some time its shows waiting for bootloader and says check the usb connection, there no anything with usb because I installed the latest drivers.i even can't update the software from the phone, please give me a solution.
Which 6.0 RUU ? What's the name of the RUU ?
Do you read the link that I posted above - https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/one-m8s-general/htc-one-m8s-boot-t3528316
There's only 8 posts in that thread with link to RUU and how to install.
Rename the RUU.zip to 0PKVIMG.zip
Put it on root of microSD
Boot to bootloader then select hboot
It will ask to update
Volume Up to update
Relax .. let it finish its job
Once completed - press power to reboot
Done
Make sure you relock bootloader before you run the procedure.

Have you read through the readme thread? One of your previous posts referenced ODIN, which is a Samsung tool. If you've read through the readme thread we will have a common foundation of understanding - and you may discover the solution to your problem there.
It sounds like you need to flash a RUU to your phone. The pre-requisites and guide to doing so are laid out in the readme thread. If you have any questions after reading through it, please post them here and we'll help out as best we can.

Which RUU are you exactly trying to flash (link it please)? What's your current firmware version? Have you checked the MD5 checksum of the downloaded file? What's the size of the SD card you're using? What's its format?

i followed the guide its 32 giga exfat. My firmware is 3.35.401.12 and i am trying to install this one https://pa1.androidfilehost.com/dl/...1_U11440792_97.00.51203G_F_release_signed.zip
That RUU got successfully flashed by S-ON users in the past and it's the correct one for your current firmware. So either the file got corrupted during the download (you didn't mention whether the MD5 checksum matched) or your SD card is broken.

I actually won't answer in this thread, anymore. You already got told to read the ReadMe thread and to follow its instructions. That thread clearly explains how to find the correct RUU and how to flash it. Besides, it tells you not to (re-)lock the bootloader and why you shouldn't do so.
If you ignore all these information and prefer to try out wrong RUUs and to relock your bootloader then there's nothing I can do for you.

Baseband [email protected]_76.02_F
Build 2.51.617.1 8.0_g CL942117 release-keys
Bootloader unlocked and rooted with SU
TWRP 3.1.1
Recently installed Viper10 5.11.0 ROM. Trying to return to stock but cannot. I have tried running several HTC RUU exe files (including RUU_PERFUME_WL_N70_SENSE80GP_MR_NA_Gen_Unlock_2.41.617.3 RUU_PERFUME_WL_N70_SENSE80GP_VZW_MR_NA_Gen_Unlock_2.51.617.32
RUU_PERFUME_WL_N70_SENSE80GP_VZW_MR_NA_Gen_Unlock_2.51.617.21
PMEWL_2.51.617.32_NoWipe_TWRP3110).
Nothing works. The RUU files start InstallShield Wizard but when it gets end of the progress bar, the wizard stops and nothing else happens. I've Run As Admin and disabled AV/Firewall. Nothing.
I've tried to install zip versions of same RUU files, both using Fastboot and moving to internal/card storage of the phone. No ZIP file will return unit to stock.
Using the RUU should be the best option but the RUU file always fails when the Wizard's progress bar gets to the end. Why does the RUU fail every time?

What does it say next to CID, MID, and OS in bootloader mode?
You are S-Off, so instead of running an RUU, you can flash a no-wipe firmware package (an RUU will wipe your phone). With that information I can link you to a no-wipe firmware, with instructions to flash it.
Thanks, but I don't want to change CID to Verizon. It's a GSM phone, not CDMA. It's unlocked (617). But I do understand the confusion. The HTC Dev site downloads an RUU that is seemingly for Verizon even though it's listed under the Unlocked Phone section.
Thanks. Bootload mode shows CID as BS_US001, MID as 2PS650000 and OS as 2.51.617.32. I have tried to flash (using both TWRP and Fastboot) a no-wipe firmware (namely PMEWL_2.51.617.32_NoWipe_TWRP3110) but it hasn't returned me to stock. Nothing takes and the only thing I can do to revive the phone is reflash (using TWRP) the Viper10 rom. I can live with the Viper10 rom but I'd like to return to stock so I can get HTC OTA, etc. I figure the most likely way to accomplish this is to use the HTC Dev RUU but, as mentioned, it never gets past the InstallShield Wizard.
Interesting that the Bootloader shows a different OS version than checking through the phone's software. In any event, I am definitely running Viper10 and it uses an older Build as its base.

Software in setting> about is your ROM base, OS in download mode is your firmware version.
Do you have HTC Sync installed on your PC? Try uninstalling it and running the RUU again. You could also try running it while your phone is booted to download mode.
Yup, I've installed fresh drivers via HTC Sync and the PC recognizes the phone no problem.
ADB and fastboot also see the phone. I've tried the RUU in download mode,
bootloader and even OEM rebootRUU. Nada. In all cases the RUU InstallShield Wizard starts and then stops when it reaches the end of the progress bar. It never even gets to the actual RUU install routine (which I've used in the past with my HTC M9, so I know how it works when it flashes correctly). I'm running out of ideas. I'm happy with Viper10, if I can't get back to stock.
Try this https://www.reddit.com/r/htc/comments/2vxite/ruu_exe_file_doesnt_load_closes/colxuoy/
I've had the same problem while running on win 10 ltsb 2016 and this seemed to fix the problem.

If your OS says 2.51.617.32, then you are on the latest firmware now. Seems like the no-wipe firmware worked after all. The firmware won't return you to stock.
If you want to go back to stock and not just update your firmware, you could try flashing a 2.51.617.32 RUU.zip via your extSD instead of running the RUU.exe.
I can upload the RUU.zip if you need it.
Thanks again for the help. I have the following RUU downloaded from the HTC Dev site: RUU_PERFUME_WL_N70_SENSE80GP_VZW_MR_NA_Gen_Unlock_2.51.617.32
I also found what I believe is the ZIP version of that RUU: 2PS6IMG_PERFUME_WL_N70_SENSE80GP_VZW_MR_NA_Gen_Unlock_2.51.617.32
I've tried both running the RUU.exe and flashing the ZIP from my externalSD. No luck with either. Viper10 stays stubbornly stuck as my ROM. If you have a better ZIP, I'd be happy to try that too.
Thanks. I saw this suggestion as well in my hunt for a solution.
I've reloaded every.... possible... redistributable... with no success.
At least my C++ Visual Studio redistributables are up to date.
I can't even get the the license acceptance screen on the RUU install wizard.
I crash out before then.
Thanks. I found the same suggestion in my hunt for a solution.
I've updated every single redistributable... with no success. At least my PC is up-to-date with C++ Visual Studio. :-/

First of all, you should use the reply/quote button when responding to a comment. It makes it easier to tell who you are replying to, and who you are replying to will get a notification about it.
Okay, delete any RUU.zips you already have on your ext SD
Download this
Rename it by deleting everything in the name of the .zip except for 2PS6IMG (and .zip of course) and place it onto your ext SD card
Boot to download mode and your phone will recognize the .zip and prompt you to press volume up to confirm the flash. Do that
When the flash is complete your phone will ask you to press power to reboot. Do that
After the RUU has flashed, either delete the .zip or rename it again to something else (add _2.51.617.32 to the name so you know what it is). If you don't do that, every time you boot to download mode your phone will try to update again.
Good luck!

Tada! That worked. I was able to flash the ZIP you sent and restored to stock 2.51.617.32. I still have no idea why the RUU exe file won't work but as usual there is more than one way to skin a cat -- or in this case, flash an HTC 10. Also not sure why prior attempts to flash a ZIP from the external SD didn't work.
Thanks for all your help (and patience).

You are welcome
I'm not sure what was going on with the .exe not working, but I knew this would.
I'm glad that I could help.

Hello! I am having the same issue; however, I am S-ON. Do you have the RUU of the file you referenced? Many thanks!

That is the RUU I linked.
You could get the RUU.exe that you can run from your PC from HTC's official US website here.
But if you want to flash from SD that's the one. It works with S-On as well.

Does this require an external sdcard?
Thanks

No. You can run the .exe on your PC, or flash the .zip in fastboot with
fastboot flash zip 2PS6IMG.zip after renaming it to 2PS6IMG.zip
