Mobile data connected yet most apps say no data connection - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay ...so every time I install a custom ROM I get this bug ... I am using a jio 4g sim ...when I turn on mobile data ...the speed meter tells the speed correctly.. But still the network icon says data not connected (sim network with an exclamation or cross symbol) . Some of the are able to receive the data ..like Instagram ..even WhatsApp can send and recieve text msgs (but can't download audio/video mags) ! When I use a VPN/tunnel app to route the data connection of the phone ...all apps work totally fine !
PS : all apns, mobile networks and network types are adjusted correctly

Are you absolutely sure the APN is correct? Because that sounds exactly like an incorrect APN setting

Tip: Market app (wireless access)

As I mentioned in my earlier thread I recently bought a Motorola Defy. Like many other users that I read about before purchasing my first android smartphone I was not able to open Google Market app after a factory reset.
My hint is based on my own experience and I hope it serves someone else well with similar issue.
As I write this message I have no data plan on my contract and I intend to use wireless connection for emailing, internet browsing, and the Market app. Once I completed the initial setup I put my handset's network mode to 2G only. I was worried to be charged for accessing data on 3G.
I had no problem using the Market app initially over the wireless connection until I did a refactory reset to re-setup my handset properly second time round. It was then the Market app stopped working and not even a master reset resolves the problem and then I was considering to root the handset to remove certain folders as a solution to the problem.
Everytime I laucnhed the Market app it stuck at Terms and Services page. It then occurred to me to change the network mode to Automatic and switch off the wireless connection to see what would happen. Next time I laucnhed the Market app it took me straight to the market's home page. It took me two days to figure this out : (
Once I was in the market I switched the network mode back to 2G only and turned on the wireless again. Everything is working just fine now. For the porpose of this thread I powered off the handset and turned it on again to see if my last settings i.e. 2G only still launches the Market app successfully or not. I can confirm that the Market app works just fine over the wireless connection just fine with 2G only network mode.
BTW, the batter life of this handset is so impressive. I used it one and half day very extensively (over 20 times of restarting the handset alone) and I was very surprised lasted that long. On moderate use and proper battery management (no widgets, no 24 wireless connection), and putting it on air plane mode at nights I would get over 2.5 days before charging is required.
I can't wait for Android 2.2 release to make this handset even more productive for me : )

I think you may have a misconception of 2G versus 3G. They are different technologies. When your phone is in 2G mode, it uses one type of network for both voice and data. In 3G mode it uses another type which provides better voice quality and faster data speeds.
Either way your phone will still try to access data unless you turn off mobile data. If it's in 2G mode and you see the little "E" icon up in the notification area, it's still accessing mobile data - just at a slower rate.

Thank you for your inputs. I'm very new in the world of smartphones but learning fast.
I searched around to find out how to disable Mobile data and chosen this method *#*#4636#*#* and changed my network type to GSM for best coverage and battery life now. I can confirm the Masrket app still works with wireless connection.
Changing to GSM only does not disable mobile data.

I disabled the Mobile Data option by pressing the Settings button then More>Disable Mobile Data. It was then I noticed the options for changing my network type beyond just 2G and 3G.

Did that work then? You no longer connect with mobile date, I'm asking because I have now ordered my Defy but like you don't have a network plan so need a workaround.

Right ok, thanks for clarifying
In Froyo there is a mobile data toggle in the regular menus, and on all Sense phones too. Is there one on Blur phones? I guess not.
Another way to block data is to go to your APN list and fudge the entry (e.g. change epc.tmobile.com to epc.tmobile.com.nodata).

The only way I can assure you I have successfully disabled Mobile Data by looking at the reception icon in notification bar that no longer displays G, H, E, and 3G at anytime.

MMS won't send when connected to wifi

Anyone else having this problem? When I go to send a picture message it won't send if I'm connected to wifi. It just says "sending..." until I cancel it and connect to the mobile network (Verizon btw)

Mine still works when on wifi. Make sure you have mobile data enabled.
Did you resolve your problem?
I have the same issue...
I can send and receive mms, but not with wifi connected.
In the settings there is no "always send/receive mms" to select.
In GB there is a setting to always send/receive mms, that auto turns on mobile data, and the turns off mobile data when done.
Now I have to turn off the wifi, and then manually turn on mobile data.
If I don't do both of these the message just says sending but does not actually send.
Can anyone help?

AOKP Milestone 4
I'm pretty sure mms can't be sent via wifi and can only be sent via your mobile network/mms APN.
I had this for a while as well. One of the builds of AOKP eventually fixed it for me.

This is correct. But the phone is supposed to automatically switch back to the cell network and send the mms, then go back to wifi. Thats how my previous android phones work.
My last phone DHD, varoious roms from 2.2 to 2.3.7 would all (if connected to wifi) enable mobile data to send or receive MMS and then disable mobile data when finished. I would not have to manually swith anything on or off.
There is a setting to allways allow MMS that could be selected.
Now using AOKP milestone 4, Franco kernel Milestone 1, if wifi is connected I must manually switch it off, then manually enable mobile data to send or receive MMS.
If wifi and mobile data are both off, I must still enable mobile data before it eill send or receive.
My APN settings are ok as i can send and receive MMS, it just does not do it automatically.
I don't think its the rom either as i have the same issue with Code Name Droid.
it seems strange..in the stock sms app its checked the automatic receive (or something similar) under mms settings?
also do you have 2 apns, one with type default, and one with type mms?
do you have some apps that interfer with the activation of the mobile data? like juice defender or similar
Yes I have 2 APN's, a default mobile data and a MMS apn.
I use the stock message app which does have an auto retrieve setting to select and is selected.
but the always receive setting im talking about is in the Mobile network settings.
2.3.7 has the follow listed under "mobile network settings"
Data enabled
Always receive MMS
Data Roaming
Network type selection
Access point Names
Network Operators
4.0.3 AOKP has:
Data enabled
Data Roaming
Access Point Names
Use only 2G network
Network Operator
The "always receive MMS" setting is missing, I think this setting is responsible for doing it automatically.
I posted a couple of screen shots of the settings in both.
anyway searching around it seems a problem with a lot of stock android roms
the 2.3.7 screenshoot u posted its a custom rom..
seems (im not sure) the androd aosp roms in every nexus (nexus one and nexus s too) miss the option to always receive mms even on gingebread..so if u really want receice mms, u have to enable the mobile data..or probably look for a custom rom that have that option
by the way i think i sent one or two mms in my life not a big problem though
LOL
yeah I only send 1 a year my self...
Looks like i have to do it manually, won't be givin up AOKP for it.
Thanks for the help.
Are other people not seeing this? MMS might as well not be an option on my phone. Sometimes it kind of works, other times it out right does not work. WiFi on/off. Whatever. Super frustrating. I'd love to find some sort of hack. I've tried different radios, APNs, different images now, etc.. I'm an unlocked HSPA user on AT&T.

Since this feature is rom specific, anyone know which roms have it built in there ?
I'm on Eclipse 2.1, build 4 (4.1.2, Toro) it does not have this available.

I know this is old thread, but I've recently encountered this problem on rooted MMuzzy 4.2.1. When WiFi is on and someone sends me a MMS from an iPon, I get a "Download" button. I have Automatically DL set in the Messaging app. If I turn off WiFi, then it will download. Happens in both Handcent (set as the default app) and stock Messenger.

Arc s pxts trouble

Hey guys, I'm on 2Degrees(which goes through Vodafone i think) in New Zealand, and I'm not on a data plan, just prepay.
I can't seem to send pxt's unless I enable 'data roaming' and 'mobile networks', which if I'm correct uses data and eats my prepay time.
I just get a 'Could not send. Message will be sent when service becomes available' error
My mate has the exact same setup with his sensation, and can send/receive pxt's without enabling any mobile networks or data roaming, when he sends or receive a pxt, his '3g' symbol pops up and the pxt sends.
So my question is, is there something I need to do to be able to send and receive pxt's without having to use mobile data and eating into my prepay money, because I know this is possible, just not sure why it's not working on this phone.
I've attached some pics of my apn settings, from what I can tell they are all correct...
Thanks for your help!

Did some research on Google...
PXT requires MMS to be used, MMS requires 3G internet in order to send the stuff. All the photos/audio files and stuff can only be sent over Internet. There is no other way.
You need to have MMS settings in your phone. Data roaming is not required at all. MMS downloading will not eat your money for data, as MMS settings are used for it. MMS settings don't allow you to surf on the internet, these settings are only for sending and receiving MMS.

That makes sense to a degree,
So i need internet access to be able to send MMS?, which means I need to enable mobile networks and data roaming(since I'm not on a data plan I have to enable these or I can't get internet access, therefore no MMS).
But what your saying is even though I enable internet access, the MMS side of it doesn't actually eat into the data, since it's sent a different way, visa vie, it doesn't eat my pre paid moneys...
I just wonder if there is a way to only get data turned on when it's needed for MMS, other wise all my apps are constantly updating and eating my credit...

MMS will use the data itself when it is needed. Mobile networks doesn't have to be turned on, it is only needed if you want to surf on the internet.. Data Roaming is only used if you want to use your phone's internet in another country(which is f**king expensive).
I received an MMS on my Arc S once, I didn't have internet settings on my phone, just MMS settings(APN stuff). I got an SMS, then used the download option. Data was turned on automatically, MMS was downloaded and data was turned off again. No charges for me.

That all makes total sense, my only problem is, I can't send or receive pxts unless i enable both mobile networks and data roaming, I've literally tested it in all ways i can, and it wont work unless they are both enabled.

[Q] 4G LTE signal next to Wi-Fi indicator?

So today I flashed this update for 4.1.2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387423
And I noticed the 4G LTE icon is always there when I am sitting at my home wifi. Is this normal or what could it be?
Edit: Under Settings > About device > Status > Mobile Network state is always "Connected".
IP Address is always the mobile IP and not the WiFi IP...
Edit 2: If data is turned on and wifi is connected, phone cannot access online services at all unless in airplane mode with wifi on...
Anyone???

It means that the phone is using your providers network, if you were on wireless for example as you know how it normally looks, the network data icon goes away, If you were to send a text or use a program that does not use wifi, it will then use cell data. Maybe you have a rogue app or service running. Have you tried to wipe your cache and dalvik? You could also be connected with wifi but not have internet access through it, thus enabling the network again while wifi is on.

I've checked the network connection over and over again, but from what I see, the icon never goes away and its been more than a day, so I'm gonna try wipe cache and dalvik and if not, I might have to do an Odin stock (hopefully not).
I also noticed that from jst downloading an app through the Play Store, I get a system notification (the ones that appear in a gray box at the bottom of the screen) that I have XXX.X MB left of memory...
